Our first B & B experience could not have been better! Joan makes "home" a place you can feel from the minute you walk in. Lovely home and area, peace & quiet, sleeping in a wonderful room, waking up to fresh coffee, and a breakfast explosion of local fare and flavor. What a great cook...thank you Joan! My sister and I look forward to getting back to the pampering and great conversations as well as another visit with out family. I left with a lovely and treasured coffee cup and some of Joan's homemade jam! SHAVERS has my high recommendation from the heart!
We love staying at Shavers of Abingdon, it is like staying with old friends. Joan makes the best scones we have ever had and the pancakes are wonderful. Being just around the corner from the Muster grounds makes it the perfect spot! If you love beautiful antiques, it is a must stay. Be sure to spend some time in the screened gazebo!
My husband and I enjoyed 2 nights of great food, clean, comfortable accommodations, and a charming hostess, Joan, during a trek to the Creeper Trail and Barter Theatre in Abingdon. Joan prepared our food from the freshest of veggies and herbs from the nearby Farmer's Market. Thank you for a wonderful trip!

We invited 6 of our friends and spent the weekend with the Shaver's. Terrific food/wine/hospitality and the murder mystery was a huge hit with our group.
Highly recommend this B&B.
Just came home from a wonderful weekend! Joan was a perfect hostess. We arrived a little late but was made to feel right at home by coming in the back door into the homey kitchen. She showed us our beautiful room ( Carolina Room) and surprised us with fresh flowers and chilled champagne! Breakfast both days was fantastic! My husband jokingly asked where was the gravy to go with the biscuits(we are from the south!) and the next morning she had made him gravy. After explaining why I could not eat her crepes and jam(diabetes) she filled my plate the next morning with things I could eat making sure not to "tempt " me with the forbidden food. The bed was comfortable, the entire house including the bathroom was spotless. We even had soft, fluffy robes for our comfort. A small fridge upstairs made sure we had plenty to drink at night if we became thirsty. Coffee was placed outside our bedroom door each morning with beautiful china cups to make us feel extra special. Thank you Joan and your "maintenance man" for a beautiful anniversary weekend! [Resource Id: innkeeperresponse, Set: reviews] Thank you so much for the wonderful comments--it was my pleasure to make your 30th Wedding Anniversary special--we are so glad you enjoyed your stay!!
We had a comfortable visit to this old Victorian home near downtown Abingdon. Upon arrival, we enjoyed a dip in the hottub and since we were the only midweek guests, we had it all to ourselves. This was followed by cheese, crackers, wine and good conversation with our hose Joan Shaver (she and her husband had the same first names as another couple we know). The Carolina room made for a quaint sleep after our night at the Barter and we were greeted in the morning by coffee outside our room and then an amazing breakfast!!! We would recommended this fairly affordable B&B to anyone.
The house is on a quiet residential street a little less than a mile from the center of town -- an easy walk, but would recommend driving at night. We attended a play at the fabulous Barter Theater, and if you like regional theaters and quality plays, this one is a gem. The 34-mile Virginia Creeper Trail also begins in Abingdon, and the town has other small treasures as well. The five guest rooms are located on the second floor (no elevator), and the only drawback is the lack of bathrooms connected to the rooms. There are three bathrooms off the hall on the second floor and one half-bath (we were told) on the ground floor. We were the only guests on the night we stayed, so walking down the hall a few feet to a separate bathroom was no problem, but if all the rooms are occupied . . . well, you can do the math. If there is a full bath available for each room then this comment should be corrected by someone who knows. Otherwise, we had a delightful stay. Our room was spacious and artfully decorated. The four-poster bed was firm and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, and our hosts were gracious and welcoming.
[Resource Id: innkeeperresponse, Set: reviews] There is a full bath for each room, except that rooms 3 and 4 (w/2 twin beds) connect and share the bath across the hall. Rooms 1 and 2 get the two baths at the end of the hall, and if room 5 is occupied, they have a full private bath on the 3rd floor and get a discount on their room rate. Whehever I have had all the rooms occupied, I have not had anyone express disappointment.
After a 3 day backpacking trip, my husband and I spent an incredibly nice and relaxing night at Shavers... from the relaxing bath in the footed tub to the little "extras" (afternoon refreshments) to the amazing breakfast, we enjoyed it all. The rooms are very clean, the service great.

My husband and I came for a weekend to go to the Bristol Tenn nascar race. We had a wonderful time. The bed and breakfast was a short easy drive to the races. We stayed for 2 days and Joan made a wonderful breakfast both days,She is a great chef! It was a pleasure to stay , the room and bathroom were large, bright and clean. After a long day at the races it was nice to come back to comfortable bed and a warm welcome from Joan. We will be back!!!!
A very comfortable, relaxed and enjoyable weekend. Joan's breakfast was outstanding (scones, crepes, etc!). She provides a lot of little extras and even surprised us with champagne in a bucket for our anniversary celebration. Will recommend to friends, and hope to return in the future. Thank you for a nice weekend getaway.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for Valentine's Weekend. It was a true delight! The rooms and bathrooms were all so clean. When we arrived the room included chocolate covered strawberries, other candies, and red tulips. The hosts were so nice and accommodating to our plans. We attended a play at the Barter Theatre and Joan made sure we had dinner in plenty of time before the play. She even offered choices for us for the entrees; which brings me to the-food. it was absolutely amazing. It was a full course meal. It was so tasty. (Salad, a plate of delicious appetizer sampler including oysters, bacon stuffed mushrooms, shrimp scampi, and brie, Pecan crusted salmon, mashed potatoes and asparagus, roll, and creme brule that was to die for!) When we arrived back to the bed and breakfast she had left chilled champagne for us! All of the thoughtful extras made this place enjoyable! In the morning, again, had another delicious meal by Joan. Shavers is definitely the perfect place for a quiet, reasonably priced getaway!

we had a victorian wedding and was looking for a victorian themed house to spend our anniversary in this year. i found it in abingdon at the shavers b&b house. it was the perfect house for the occasion. joans house is the prettiest house in abingdon. upon check in she was very warm and offered snacks and hot tea. throughout our stay she brought us water. the rooms were filled with antiques and the claw foot tub in one of the bathrooms was great to soak in. delicious home cooked breakfast each morning. plenty to eat while there. she gave us tour books and menus so we could choose our destinations. very close to town and tourtist attractions.
Was planning to meet a dear friend for Thanksgiving and almost at the last minute decided to meet in southwest Virginia. A web search produced a Thanksgiving special at the Shavers of Abingdon. The special included Thanksgiving dinner which was perfect for us! I called Joan and discussed our stay and a mere two days before Thanksgiving we were booked. We both arrived after noon and Joan was cooking dinner and the whole house smelled ooooh so good! Our room was quaint and clean - appointed with antique furniture. We cleaned up a bit and by that time dinner was served. The dinner was superb- the turkey was moist and tender and all the fixins were wonderful. We sat with Joan and her husband Mike and talked for almost 2 hours. Wine was also served as well as home cooked pies - pumpkin and chocolate pecan. We were stuffed to the gills and went for a walk downtown to the Barter Theater and back and then retired to our room for the evening. The next morning we awoke to the smell of breakfast being cooked. Breakfast started with fruit and crepes and was followed bu cooked to order eggs, bacon and sausage. Joan had baked fresh biscuits and scones. She is quite the chef! Our stay at the Shavers was wonderful and an experience we will never forget - the place is clean and well appointed - a most relaxing atmosphere with the hosts taking care to ensure their guests are comfortable. We also took in the afternoon show at the Barter which was quite enjoyable to boot. We would rate the value, quality and comfort at the Shavers as outstanding - and would recommend it to anyone...
[Resource Id: innkeeperresponse, Set: reviews] Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We were delighted to have you share our Thanksgiving meal, and you were superb guests! Please think of us any time you are in the area--we'd love to have you return--it was indeed a pleasure!
In May 2009 my mother, husband and I enjoyed the hospitality of Shavers of Abingdon. Our stay included a very special Saturday breakfast at the local Farmers' Market that was a wonderful treat!
The location was a real plus, on a scenic road yet close to downtown activities. I was looking forward to a return trip to our new found Abingdon "home" before we left the drive.

From the moment of arrival until departure is was one of the most relaxing B&B's that we have come across. Joan is like a surgeon.............There is only one way , the right way.....................Try it.
Beautiful house, nice accommodations, great service, and truly outstanding homemade breakfasts. Location is just minutes away from everything Abingdon has to offer, including the Barter Theater, Abingdon Farmer's Market, and the historic district. Will definitely return!
Jim and I headed to the beautiful mountains for fall color last year. We stayed at the Shaver's B & B. Our room was lovely. The hot scones were orange glazed, tender and simply melted in out mouth. Joan bakes like a dream! Coffee was delivered to our room. Because the weather was warm, we enjoyed the screen house in back. Wonderful, wonderful trip and great pictures! We will head that direction again!
