  • Enjoy a glass of wine in the porch swing on the grand veranda of the Big Cottage at Menger Cottages in Helotes, (San Antonio) Texas.
    The Carriage House at Menger Cottages is an open, loft space that accommodates two with a full kitchen, dining area, queen bed, seating area and spacious bathroom. A scenic overlook around offers a beautiful view of the Texas HIll Country.
    The Carriage House features a dramatic exposed limestone wall that harkens back to a country farm cottage in Europe. Every window offers a view of woodland trees, birds and nature.
    The Carriage House at Menger Cottages features a full kitchen with coffee maker, blender, dishwasher and microwave. The view out the kitchen window is oak trees, the vegetable garden and horses.
    The shower in the Carriage House is big enough for two and features a rainshower head. The spacious bathroom is big enough to double as a dressing area. Soft robes hang on the inside door.
    The Carriage House features an entertainment area with cable TV. This unique niche in the wall seems like a huge fireplace with cedar mantel against the dramatic limestone wall. Books, magazines and wi-fi are sources of quiet entertainment.
    The kitchen in the Big Cottage has Old World Charm but all the modern conveniences with lots of counter space. The kitchen table seats up to six people plus a breakfast bar allows folks to chat with the cooks during meal preparation.
    The living room in the Big Cottage has a wood burning fireplace and the original hardwood floors. For entertainment, there is an HD TV, books, checkers, Scrabble and puzzles plus plenty of cozy seating.
    The kitchen in the Big Cottage has a farmhouse sink and a pass-through above the sink so guests can converse with the cook. A corner shelf with butcher block shelves is the perfect place for a bottle of wine and elegant glasses.
    The Mozart Room in the Big Cottage is an elegant suite with historical floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the front pasture. As side door opens onto a private patio where you can enjoy a morning cup of coffee.

    Menger Cottages is a collection of historic rock homes built by my great grandparents in the Texas HIll Country - the Big Cottage, the Carriage House and, soon, the Lodge. Check out our reviews on .vrbo/401196 and 373236. The Big Cottage is an elegant, European palace in the country built in 1929. It accommodates up to six people. Step up to the grand veranda w/ a panoramic view of the hill country as deer graze in the front pasture. Settle into rocking chairs off the bedroom porch w/ your morning coffee. Inside, the warm, spacious living room has a stone fireplace & original hardwood floors. Step thru the French door into the Mozart Room w/ a queen bed & luxurious linens. The Mimi Room has a queen bed & will make you feel like a Royal. The private Pony Room has a twin bed, a Ralph Lauren feel & a view of horses. The updated kitchen has Old World charm with a farmhouse sink. The European bath has a spacious shower. A large patio area with fire pit is the perfect place for conversations and the dining table for six allows you to have meals under the stars. The Carriage House is an open, loft space that accommodates two with a full kitchen, dining area, entertainment area, queen bed and spacious bathroom. Dramatic exposed limestone walls give the feel of an old farmhouse. All around our seven acres, there are places to sit with a glass of wine and soak in views of the Texas Hill Country, giant oak trees and wildlife. Ours is a working ranch with five horses on the property. Mojo, an old rescued Quarter horse, has free range of the back pasture.

    I have a lifelong fascination with my family history and how it is entwined with Texas history and Texas architecture. My husband is a devotee of all things musical including classical music and opera. We love that we have cultivated wildlife on our property including birds, deer and lizards. We hope to start a vegetable garden on the property soon so guests can have fresh produce. After that, we plan to set up a chicken coop so there will also be fresh eggs each morning!
