"A Night and Day at the Inn at Langley "

" Evening hours on Washington island waters on a day in late August will be cool, even during a long spell of days without rain. In the cool at the end of a good day, we stood on the deck outside our room at sunset. We watched the sun go down, watched the tidal waters, returned through the sliding door to the comfortable room. One of us would watch the speeches of the convention, the other preferred to read. No tropical storm threatened to disrupt the quiet here. We looked forward to breakfast in the dining room in the morning. Before going to the dining room the next day, we took pictures by the hedge outside the entrance. A resident of Langley said that the hedge looked as though it was trimmed with scissors. One of us touched it to see if it felt as smooth as it looked. It did. In the dining room we observed couples greeting friends, others reading The New York Times, The Seattle Times. Our interest in events in the outside world was put in one place. Our thoughts about the ideal way to start a day called for another cup of hot coffee. "
