We were a group of 10 persons and stayed for 10 days in the suite and enjoyed our stay. It was clean and the inn keeper was very helpful and friendly. The inn was not far from the metro (at 15-20 min from Time Square). Everything exceeded our expectations.
It's hard to find accommodations that exceed your expectations, whether it's a hotel or B&B. I definitely received excellent service and value at Saint Nicholas Inn and it will be my first choice whenever I am back in Harlem. The room was a spotless extra large room with a queen sized bed, television with cable and wifi internet. Even though the bathroom was shared, I don't believe anyone else was staying on the floor I was on and had no trouble using the bathroom or shower when need be. Breakfast was served in the morning, fresh fruit and a croissant on one day, a muffin and fresh fruit the next. The accommodation was quiet and peaceful. The only issue I had didn't come from the B&B itself, but from a nearby building that was playing music late on a Saturday night.
I felt safe at the B&B and very much at home walking around Harlem. The train station is less than a five minute walk away or you can be like me and walk about 20/25 minutes to the clothing stores and restaurants like Sylvia's.
I would definitely recommend Saint Nicholas Inn. It's a great and affordable place to stay in Manhattan without being in all the hustle and bustle, it's located in a great part of Harlem and if the value and accommodations don't change your mind, just being in an area full of so much amazing history will!
Sometimes, you find an inn where the hosts just take care of your every need with swift action, knowledge and experience - they know what they are doing - and at the Saint Nicholas Inn, you can have that kind of experience. The rooms are well appointed, clean and exactly what you'd expect, the price is right, but the hosts are what makes the Saint Nicholas special. Worth a stop for the night, just to see how and feel how it's done right in NYC.
1.Up town of Manhattan, very close to subway C trains' line at 155th station(in the corner of the hostel, walk for 1~2mins), and also can trasfer A express trains at 145th station to major station of down town or mid town(15~30mins)
2.old house but clean, bright room, especially bed is comfortable(important for tired trip) & classical decoration in suit(I like to feeling when sun wake me up in the morning)
3.Taxi just cost USD18~22(incl. tip)from 42nd(time square) area after having the Broadway show, and just cost about $12 to (MET museum in 86th street)
4.Convenient Wifi at room, it's real exceeded my expectations
We stayed at the Saint Nicholas Inn from the 10/16 to the 20/10 in a double room (1 Queen bed for 2 ppl) and found it fantastic. After travelling almost 24hrs (Australia/Syd to NYC) we were both pretty stuffed, Sharon and her partner (I'm sorry I forget his name) made us feel very welcome and pointed us in the right direction for both food and the Town car situation.
The bed was extremely comfortable, the room large and the heating was both adjustable and rapid.
There are two delis within 2mins walk from literally the top of the front steps (the furtherst does coffee in the morning, the closest beer at night ;), the subway stop could not be any closer and in a great co-incidence we found out you can walk to Yankee stadium (about 20min), how good is that !!
We found the area to be safe and feel safe at all times of the day or night, breakfast is continental and more than enough to get you started, would we stay here again ? You bet, great value and a great way to both meet real people and get into the NYC groove.
I stayed in a private room, queen size bed, on the third floor, from October 7 - 11, 2008. Sharon the hostess is hospitable and will assist in getting you to the hotspots of NYC, in particular the soul food restaurants. Even though this place is in Upper Manhattan, I felt safe both day and night. Literally steps to the subway or bus stop and it will get you anywhere. Take the A train for express service to the downtown/Times Square area. I would definitely stay here again. The only negative I would say is that the shower and bathroom are not in one room. So you have to go down the hall to use the washroom and use another room to have a shower, if staying on the third floor. I have no idea about the rooms on the other floors. Clean and affordable.
We stayed two weeks in the suite and enjoyed our stay at the inn. It was very clean and the inn keeper was very helpful and friendly. The suite was huge and even had its own small kitchen (without oven) and bathroom. Everything exceeded our expectations. There were some parks in the neighbourhood and a subway station just next to the inn (approx. 15min to mid-town with C-train). Complementary breakfast was ok, but nothing special. We'd recommend the suite to anyone.
The innkeeper is great! She is very friendly and accomodating. You cannot beat the price of the room. The inn is literally half a block from the subway, on the same side of the street! There is also a bus line on the same corner. It's a breeze to get to Yankee Stadium. We (a guy and girl couple) got back to the inn between 11pm and midnight and it was fine walking to the inn from public transportation. (I (the girl)wouldn't do it by myself that late, but during daylight would be fine.) There is a great pizza place on the opposite corner, but other than that I didn't see a lot of food choices right there at the inn. Also, the room was advertised as air conditioned, but our room was not. However, there was a fan in the room, so it was fine. The breakfast was traditional continental breakfast and we didn't miss a day to fill up our bellies. All in all, it was a good place to stay and we would stay there again.
Everything you expect to find in a bed and breakfast is there. We had nice big rooms, which isn't so easy to find in New York. Our Inn keeper was sooooo nice. She mad our stay very pleasant. The only thing we missed were knifes at breakfast and a big mirror in our room.
Our room was perfect for young couples just like us (25 years old). We didn't ask for a room with private bathroom, so we didn't mind washing ourselfs in a shared one.
Saint Nicholas Inn is just 3 steps away from the subway. That's great. The rooms are nice but old. The owners try to do their best and are very nice.
Good for young couples and families with a small budget.
Our stay at the Saint Nicholas Inn was great! When we arrived via subway with all of luggage we were happy to find that it was only steps away from the subway. The neighborhood was pretty quiet and we felt very safe. We were greeted by the Inn Keeper upon our late night arrival. The room offered A/C, satellite, and high speed internet, a definite plus! The Inn offered brochures and info on places and getting around in NYC. The suite offered a clear view of Yankees stadium. The staff went out of their way to assure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. They definitely made us feel at home. Much better than any hotel stay. We over slept and missed breakfast our first morning there but the staff assured we didn't miss breakfast the second day by bringing it directly to our room. After receiving our breakfast we were upset that we missed it the first day because it was delicious and far exceeded our expectations. Upon checkout they assured we enjoyed our stay at both the Inn and in NYC. We will definitely keep Saint Nicholas Inn in mind when we return to NYC. Thanks Sharon and Lawrence!!!
Situated in Uptown New York. Very close to subway and bus stops. Easy travel into the City. Helpful advice from the Innkeeper. Broadband linked and airconditioned. House is old but well kept. We enjoyed our stay. Even able to park our car right outside the front door.
St Nicholas was a thoroughly wonderful experience. The staff was quite attentive to our needs and very helpful. Closeness to public transport -bus and subway an added bonus since it is located in Upper Manhattan.
kitchen not well organized for breakfast for the number of guests and served a little late but good variety.
I was referred to the St. Nicholas Inn by a close friend. I was looking for someplace in Manhattan that didn't cost an arm and a leg. This B&B was just what I was looking for. It was very inexpensive compared to other venues. The place was neat and the room was great. The innkeeper Sharon was very accommodating and thoughtful. She worked with me to get me checked in and even bought a champagne bucket at my request, as I was celebrating my fiancees birthday. This place was an ideal home away from home. I highly recommend the suite.
Enjoy1
Room was clean and location was very close to subway A/C lines. Shared bath and powder room worked well because they are seperated and only shared by 2 rooms. Neighborhood was safe (by New York standards). Room was very large and beds were comfortable. Cable TV was nice to keep up on news. Staff very helpful and courteous and really shows pride in their small property. Breakfast looked good but we ate at Amy Ruths in Harlem since it's my vacation and I want to do something special. Front bedroom was noisy on saturday night but fine on Sunday. Ask for a fan to drown out the street noise. No air conditioning, but it wasn't that hot yet (I didn't ask if they have a unit for summer time). It's not the Marriott Marquis but for $140/night you get a huge room that is clean and convenient with a friendly staff.
Old 3 story house undergoing renovation (no problem for guests).
The bed of our large room was very comfortable. We could have used a mirror in the room. Shared bathroom and "powder room" are fine. The kitchen is small : crowded with 3 people having breakfast at the same time.
Sharon is great, ready to help at anytime.
Bus 13 (nice route) and subway A & C lines going downtown (30 to 40 min to 42th street) are meters away.
St Nicholas avenue seems safe.
We had a great stay in NYC.
I stayed at the St.Nicholas Inn while attending a medical meeting at Columbia Presbytarian Medical Center (13 blocks or 2 subway stops away- making it very convenient). Sharon, the innkeeper was very accomodating. She met me at the door, was always available, and went out of her way with allowing a late check out due to a late flight out of NYC.
The large room on the 3rd. floor was newly renovated and very clean and appealing. The commons areas hall, bath, etc is in the process of renovation currently but usable. The neighborhood was extremely quiet at night, 1/2 block from the subway, and never threatening. You must travel however for restaurants, shopping, etc.- minutes to the Upper West Side. However, Yankee Stadium is indeed plainly visible out the front window, and supposedly a rather short walk. All in all, a great value, clean, and comfortable!
