I visited the Gracie Inn for a trip with a friend. We needed a place to stay that was centralized and close to the subway/restaurants. It was great - our room was a pretty good size compared to other rooms I've stayed in NYC and it even had a little kitchen in it! Bed was a good size, could use some new pillows. Overall the building was quite charming and the accents in the room were adorable. Wasn't too far of a walk to the subway and there is a little cafe right on at the end of the block. It was great that they remembered my name and even remembered it when delivering breakfast - I will return as soon as I can!
I was in New York City at the start of February and was very impressed with The Gracie Inn! The location made it very easy to travel from meetings throughout the city. I took the subway a few times, but when I took a cab downtown to the Financial District, it was not too expensive! The breakfast did not really fill me up, but it was great to have a cup of coffee and some fruit brought to my room before a busy day. I would stay here again, and I look forward to my next trip to the NYC area. Also, the staff are very kind and funny!
This B&B was in a great location, great room, reasonable rate and friendly staff. Close to subway and east side museums.
DIning score is for breakfast. The breakfast is continental but adequate with juice, cereal, yogurt, hard boiled egg, toast and coffee.
We stayed in Room #204, and it is falling apart, the bed is really bad. Beyond that the staff was nice and the breakfast was good.
[Resource Id: InnkeeperResponse, Set: reviews] Guest is right... it was time for a new bed. Not only did we order a TOP of the line VERY expensive Euro-Plush Mattress we also orered a stylish new headboard back in August we also upgraded the room from a full-size to a Queen-Size Bed and It arrived SEPT 1st and now it is one of our most saught after rooms. So, many thanks for your feedback.
My recent stay at The Gracie Inn Hotel took me back to my twenties and the "pensiones" of Paris and Strasbourg and my junior year abroad. My room was simply decorated with antique furniture. It was classic and very clean! The bath was tiny, but scrupulously clean and just fine for one person. The bed was comfortable and furnished with all cotton sheets and a simple coverlet rather than a huge, floral spread. I loved the four bed pillows! Breakfast was continental style and adequate. For the money, the Gracie Inn Hotel is a superb New York travel bargain. And - the neighborhood is one of the city's finest for walking. I felt safe and fully at ease at night.
My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay at the Gracie Inn, and would definitely stay there again. Great neighborhood, the staff was gracious and helpful, and the rooms were clean and more spacious than we expected. Breakfast delivered to our room each morning was a nice touch. They're renovating, so it should be even nicer once that's finished -- but overall a charming inn that's a great deal for New York City!
Loved our stay at the Gracie Inn- from the cozy rooms to the warm shower to breakfast in bed! Definitely exceeded my expectations, especially at such a reasonable price. The only room for improvement was the bed: it was on wheels so slid around when you tried to rest against it to tie your shoes, and it was incredibly squeeky! Every middle-of-the-night roll meant lots of noise! Comfy though!

I just finished my stay at the Gracie Inn Hotel with my family and to be honest I should have asked for a refund yesterday and go to another hotel. I have never seen a bathroom so dirty and full of hairs in the floor. The fridge had not been cleaned, the paint was falling from the ceiling and the only thing in the room that fit the initial description was the size of the bed. Even the room didn't much the photo. We came here because a couple of friends had had a great experience last year, but I can tell you that for $550 for 2 nights this place is less than worth it. We asked for a room change - impossible because they were full. We asked them for a deep cleaning - we got an envelop to give a tip to the maid ... what a joke ... it was a sdirty as before ... maybe she needs the tip to buy some glasses. We ask to replace our order of fresh muffins for the breakfast by croissants, telling them that we didn't like the muffins with blueberries - and yes, we got the extra croissants, but instead of replacing the fresh muffins with blueberries, they replaced our english muffins. ... The only thing I can say it's that if anyone wants to see the pictures I have proof ... so beware they might have won awards but that was long time ago and they certainly do not deserve them anymore ... at least not in our room
My granddaughter and I stayed at Gracie Inn for four days. We were particularly impressed to receive our breakfasts on a tray delivered to our room every morning. Bottles of water were lined up near the front door to take on our journeys. People at the desk were very helpful with directions and suggestions. The only drawback was the distance to the nearest subway.
This is a pleasant enough place in a quiet area of Manhattan, just one block from the river and about 8 blocks to the Subway and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Our room was quite small and on the ground floor, but the room was fairly bright and we didn't find it too noisy. However it was not as clean as one would like. We thought it was quite expensive, especially after factoring in $35/night for parking the car at a nearby garage, but this is New York, after all. The owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fine, if nothing special, but I would have preferred not to have to eat it in the room, which has nowhere to sit an eat comfortably. I would recommend going to one of the local cafes instead. All in all we were satisfied with our stay at Gracie Inn.
We have stayed at the Inn 4 or 5 times and are very pleased with the all they offer.
Daniel and Scott have been very helpful.
The location is wonderful. Transportation is nearby and convenient.
My girlfriend and I decided to stay here after reading the reviews, with the majority stating that the Gracie Inn is excellent. The location was good, but that's about it.
I would give the overall experience 2 stars (at most), and that's only because for a weekend stay, we didn't go above $300.
The room was dark and dingy, with no sufficient lighting. The kitchen was disgusting, as there were dirty plates, cups and utensils placed back in the drawers. The food service was a joke. The fruit was mushy and disgustingly old and looked like something out of a compost heap. The bed was very uncomfortable, we could feel the springs/bars through the mattress, which made getting comfortable enough to sleep a tiring process. We ended up sleeping on top of the bedding and using our own blanket we had brought to cover us, as the bed had looked like it was previously slept in without being made.
The bathroom was also a sight to behold, there was grime in between the tiling, the caulking was just peeling off everywhere, keeping the tiles sealed in properly a losing struggle. Water pressure...well...what water pressure?! Our bathroom had a window in the shower which directly faced another room window and we actually saw someone taking a shower!
The door to the room wouldn't shut completely and had to get someone late at night using the number they provided to have someone force the door close enough so we could lock it.
You're far better off staying at a more well known hotel in DC (the one across from Borders in Times Sq. is relatively cheap, I think it's the Marriott?) If you decide to chance it, definitely give the room a once over before you head out on the town, we didn't take the time to inspect it until after we came back from dinner and a night out. Scout out a place for a nice breakfast as well as you'll find the food they provide disgusting. We suggest taking a pleasant walk to TAL or Murray's Bagels.
We stayed at Gracie Inn the weekend of our only grandson's first birthday. We needed to have quick access to subways downtown to my elder son's Chelsea photo studio for the b'day party, and out to Jackson Heights the next day with his wife and our grandson.
Gracie Inn proved to be a most accommodating choice as a center of "operations." Staff was most helpful, and resolved any concern in minutes (not that there were many, just an extra pillow, a corkscrew, supplied instantly, and what else? ... nothing)!
Overall, a great accommodation choice, and one that we will take full advantage of on our many trips to see our grandson, and so should you, whatever your reason to visit NYC! (Cabs a half block away arrived to a Broadway play in 20-25 minutes).
I've stayed at the Gracie Inn more than two times and I have to say it is a great place to stay. The rooms are great, the complimentary breakfast is more than enough and the Innkeepers are helpful. There is no where else I would stay when coming to visit New York. Also I was impressed a few months after my stay with an email that gave me a discount on my next stay. Five stars all around!
The carpet in the room we stayed in was dirty. It had clearly not been vacuumed for quite a while. Breakfast was okay. Used to be better. Heater in room was quite loud when it would kick on every hour for 5 minutes. Everything needs a refreshing -- old bed linens, decor, etc. Just wasn't as happy staying there as in the past. Staff were very nice and friendly.
My husband and I visited NYC for an anniversary getaway and to see a broadway show. The Gracie is a lovely place to stay and we were able to walk to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park. The rooms were basic and comfortable. During the night, the noise of cars from the street was a bit disruptive, although not terrible. Daniel was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone! Great value and great location for Manhattan!
The rooms are delightful, kitchen facilities are wonderful, Furniture was a pleasure to look at. Bed extremely comfortable. Daniel and all the people who work there are warm and friendly. Everything was neat and clean. Breakfast served every morning. Vicki
We were very satisfied with the accomodations at Gracie Inn. The rooms were clean and quiet, breakfasts were adequate and we appreciated the pleasant atmosphere that Daniel creates. We would certainly stay there again the next time we're in New York
Two senior Canadian travellers.
I travel to NYC on business and have stayed in everything from the Trump Plaza to Meadowlands Plaza (Jersey). The Gracie Inn is not the Trump Plaza but it is a great place to stay in NYC. The rooms are decent size and quaintly appointed (country-esque). The rooms have their own bathrooms and showers (which some places in NYC do not!) as well as a microwave, fridge, plates, cups, flatware, etc. The amenities are great and breakfast is delivered each morning. Daniel is very attentive and will answer all questions. He told me that 2009 is the rebirth of the Gracie Inn after mismanagement in the past. He is very good about customer service. You get a lot for the price - especially compared to other hotels in NYC.
The Gracie Inn is for those who do not want the sterile atmosphere of a large hotel. It is European in design with attention to detail and personal attention. It is a gem in a large city with many many hotels from which to choose. I have stayed ther since 2002 and have even stayed one day of my stay when they have been booked and then left to go to another hotel just to have the pleasure of at least one day in that lovely Inn. If you love quiet and old-world atmosphere you can not do any better. It is simply a gem. And Daniel, the manager, is always at your service. A class act all the way around. I just left there and I miss it already!
Having made several trips to the city over the last 10 years. I have stayed in everything from 1 to 5 stars. This last week I stayed at the Gracie Inn, it was a quant Bed & Breakfast on the upper East Side. It was as if I was staying at an old country home in the middle of the city - NICE! The manager "daniel" was a god send and provided me with some great info on the city, things to do, and where to eat! I will be recommending this place again to all my friends, that are looking for something that is affordable, quiet, and cozy! If you are looking for a great Italian place to eat near the Inn, try 'Arturos' - RHI 7/19/09
I needed a inexpensive space in Manhattan for 10 days and Daniel the new "Head of Household" was so great! Gave me a lovely room with kitchen. very cute movable flat screen tv. internet. The service was just as good as I have had in expensive hotels in Europe. The staff could not have been more attentive. felt like a queen. They even let me bring my lil black poodle Candy!.
Amazing service for this very low priced gem. Try it you will love it!
I stayed at the Gracie Inn for eight nights in late April-early May and couldn't have been happier. My bedroom and bathroom were spotless and very comfortable. A Continental breakfast with wonderful coffee was delivered to my door every morning at exactly the time I requested. Daniel couldn't have been more helpful, particularly when I needed to mail some heavy books home. The neighborhood was very safe and quite quiet at night. I plan to return in January and in March 2010.
We returned for our annual trip to NYC to find a pleasant surprise. They now have a seated check-in and upgraded almost all the amenities. I had the best apple strudel of my life and my wife enjoyed her granola and yogurt.
I had a great experience at the Gracie Inn. Management helped me out with everything I asked, and even found a DVD I left there a week prior after I left. The building is very nice, and the rooms are kept very clean and neat. Breakfast was right on time, and I would go back without a second thought.

Considering a stay in NYC...it was GREAT. It's an old building so the room was very charming, not much of a view, but we weren't looking for one. Everything was clean, roomy, comfortable. The breakfast that is brought to YOUR ROOM in the morning is terrific and you can request what time to have it delivered! We would definitely stay again, Marco is great!
The room was a postage stamp and the description of it being a suite was a bad joke. The furniture was certainly not antique but rather simply old, beat up junk. The walls were dirty. The woodwork in the bathroom was badly water stained. The pipes were stained. The whole impression was really grim. There was no one there when we arrived. No one at what would pass for a front desk when we arrived. A call did tell us where the keys were. A further call for information as to breakfast went unanswered. We never did see breakfast. Wi-Fi access might have been fine if we were given an access code but again there was no one to contact to give us the cod and it was not provided with the key. . The claim that it was within steps of Gracie Mansion was a total fraud. It was on a side street over a dry-cleaning store, steps away from a major avenue and quite distant from Gracie mansion. That the front door remained unlocked and that there was no one present at the front desk created a real security issue. Anyone could enter and prowl the hallways. All in all not a pleasant experience.
The rooms are a little shabby and in need of a general spruce up. But the location is one of the best in the UES where hotels are few. Breakfast was on time and very nice. Don't expect a lot from the front desk as it is staffed only a part of the day and closed an hour early on our visit. All-in-all a very good value for the price.

All we can say is that we must have been in a different hotel to that on which the previous reviews were based. Similarly the photos on the web site must be of a different hotel; they look quite nice. Service? The young lady at reception had the most ambivalent and non-caring attitude of anyone that I have ever met! We initially were allocated the groundfloor 'suite 102'. What a disappointment. Our concerns were not based on price (it is Manhatten after all) but rather on the sub-standard nature of the room. Problems included, but were not limited to, the AC not working (it was 100 in NY the day we arrived), the floor was dirty (tufts of hair etc), there were holes in the quite old sheets (and it looked like the bed had already been slept in!), the 'lounge' was heavily stained and dirty, the wifi was not working, walls in the bedroom were filthy with handmarks; we could go on. Given that we had booked in quite late (just as the office staff was leaving) I attempted to contact management in accordance with the after hours contact notice which was to use the phone in the foyer. Great idea had there been a phone in the foyer.... In the end we were allocated another room, the standard of which was only marginally better. In summary our expectations of NY accommodation were not high; however we do expect the accommodation to bear some similarity with the advertisement on the web. What we would have liked was to have stayed at the hotel that the other reviewers stayed at. It sounds quite nice.
This is a nice, clean, decent place in a very safe neighborhood. The area is not touristy at all. We stayed in a studio - teeny, tiny room (welcome to New York), very cute and charming, looked just like the pictures. Our room was furnished with antiques, a comfortable bed and everything you need - private full bath, kitchenette (dorm fridge, stove, microwave), tv, and a table and two chairs to eat the fantastic local food (at York betw. 83 & 84, you'll find an excellent Chinese restaurant and at 81st and East End, there's a great French restaurant with a price fixe menu). We also went to the Barking Dog at 77th and York - they provide dogs of all sizes with bowls of water and the food is really good. The Gracie Inn asked us what time we would like our breakfast and they delivered bagels, croissants and good coffee to our door right on time. It's great to be so near the walkway by the East River and Carl Shurz Park with its small dog park and separate big dog park (you get there by going to the East River and taking a left). You feel like a real New Yorker staying here. I would definitely stay here again! (I'm planning my next trip already!) Great value. We had a wonderful time staying here.
My family & I stayed here 2 years in a row. It felt like taking a step back in time and get ready for a friendly family type atmosphere in NY. But, make sure you book early or you will not get a room. It is well worth booking early.
We stayed here in Dec. '07; it was a family get together with 6 adults and one child. Six of us stayed in the two floor suite and the other stayed in a seperate room. The rooms were clean, towels changed every day (even if you hung them up and didn't need a new one). Upstairs room has a patio to sit on very nice; the shower in upstairs room has a green house type window and I guess if someone in the building across the street wanted to look down they might be able to see you in the shower, wife didn't feel comfortable and showered downstairs, I didn't care and it was fine. Lots of heat with a thermostat (usually older NY buildings the heat is either on or off). Nice kitchenette small fridge (dorm style) good for storing leftovers, keeping beverages cold, etc. not much ice though. Flat panel satellite TVs upstairs and down. Every morning a basket of muffins, croissant, bagels, jam, butter, cream cheese and coffee brought to each room (thay asked if we would be leaving early to sight see, and we were, so someone was knocking on the door no later then 7AM). Good pizza across the street, supermarket 1 block down, great dinner open 24 hours one avenue west. Everyone felt safe, it is a residential neighborhood so not too noisy (for the city). Easy to get cabs, or bus; only down side for transportation is the subway is several blocks away and after a long day of walking the city it would have been nicer if it was a shorter walk, but we knew this when we booked. Even if in the city for only 3 or 4 days buy a week long unlimited subway pass and try the subway. They have really cleaned it up, lots of people all hours, visible police presence, maps are easy to read, you will save a ton of money instead of taking cabs, and if you have a question don't be afraid to ask someone, they will be more then happy to help.
Some in our party are VERY picky travelers and everyone thought this was a great place to stay. When we return th NY we plan to stay here again.
The room was nivcely furnished with antiques and it gave you a comfortable homey feeling. If your looking to have some quiet or romantic time with a love one this is place to go. At the same time, its also a safe place where you can take your family too. The B & B is situated in Upper East Side of Manhattan in a very residential area. However, the B & B is located near a busy corner and it's very easy to get a taxi to anyplace you may need to go in the city. We would most definitely stay at the Grace Inn again!
