My husband and I stayed for three nights at Knollwood Inn in August. We knew we wanted to try white water rafting on the French Broad River while we were in the Asheville area so we wanted to find a place closer to the rafting companies. Knollwood is the perfect location! Its not far from the French Broad River and its only a 30 minute drive from downtown Asheville. The house is amazing! We were fortunate to have the whole upstairs to ourselves the weekend we were there. The only downside is that we expected a bed and breakfast. Knollwood is more of an Inn and does not serve breakfast. However, the kitchen at the Inn is fully stocked with everything you need to make a meal, and they even have an outdoor grill which we used to cook steaks on while we were there. Our favorite feature of the Knollwood Inn was the upstairs wrap around porch. It was so wonderful and relaxing to sit on the deck overlooking the forest while drinking our coffee. I highly recommend staying at Knollwood Inn!

For our trip to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, I chose to stay at Knollwood in Marshall, NC because it looked more interesting than any hotel room. Indeed it was. The owners are Bill and Donna Sites. They live there, of course. Bill was the architect and builder. This is a log home – nothing like what you would imagine. It is show-case quality. My wife mentioned that everything looked perfect and she did not see a single nail or screw in the house. Her favorite feature was the thermostat-controlled gas fireplace. She also really liked the mountain outstanding views. Bill told us he has retired five times, so he’s had at least five careers, but I lost track of exactly how many occupations and avocations he’s actually had. He is a world traveler and a wonderful story teller. He will spend as much or as little time with guests as they are comfortable with. The man is a genius. I’ve known a few geniuses, very few, but Bill is definitely one of them. Bill started as an electrical engineer, and has taught himself mechanical engineering, soils engineering, and a great deal else. He designed and built a one-wheel motorized trailer for his bicycle. He has designed and is not building a tandem tricycle for active folks who need the extra stability. One of his current businesses is selling log homes. He did months of research before settling on a company he was willing to represent. He talked to us at great length about the hidden problems he has found in many log homes. For example, the wood his company uses is cut and cured in Canada so it doesn’t expand and contract with the seasons. Knollwood was at least a half-hour drive from Asheville, but we are very glad we stayed there. The hospitality was wonderful and our time there was very relaxing. Just how a vacation should be.
