Richard made us feel welcome the minute he met us in the grand porch and led us into his beautiful home! What fun to be able to spend time in a mansion built in 1886. Richards' wine social, where we learned about the mansion and had a relaxing time with other guests staying at the mansion, started off our one night stay at the Alexander Mansion. Richards' dining recommendation was what we were looking for that evening. The formal breakfast was a fabulous meal where we again had time to socialize with the other guests and learn more about the history of the mansion. We took in the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, which was recommended again by Richard, and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be able to see masterpieces by Turner, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cassatt, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, O'Keeffe, Homer, Wyeth, and many more! We would highly recommend a stay at the Alexander Mansion Historic Bed and Breakfast in Winona, MN! Thank you, Richard! Rodney & Brenda

The décor is so beautiful and the detail to every single room is amazing. I could have spent hours in each room and nook and cranny just trying to absorb it all. We had a suite with a kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. I again wish to say a Special Thank you to Richard who is a warm and welcoming host! The breakfasts he prepared were like non I have ever had and the presentation was breathtaking !! We will go back again......

My husband and I planned a get away over Labor Day weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We needed somewhere to stay that was half way between home and our destination so we looked for a B & B. When I saw the Alexander Mansion pop up as an option I immediately thought it would be out of our price range but it was affordable so I booked the Martha Room. Richard, the proprietor, was immediately in contact with me and was even able to accommodate my food restrictions (there are a lot of them). We had all of the amenities we wanted without any of the ones we didn't want. Some rooms are equipped with TV's but thankfully ours was not. We found out that your stay at the Alexander Mansion allows you to receive free entrance to the Marine Art Museum. We asked Richard where we should go to dinner, he made a recommendation, and then made the reservation for us. It was wonderful. We met lovely people and Richard even allowed my husband, who is an organist, play the organ in the dining room. The breakfast was AMAZING! We are telling all of our friends about this gem and will definitely be back!

Our host met us at the door and gave us a tour of this beautiful residence. We were provided with many amenities, including wine, as part of our stay. The breakfast was outstanding, with commentary from Richard, our host. We plan a return visit soon.

A beautiful historic home that has been meticulously restored. This is the best BnB I have stayed in. Richard, the innkeeper, is a wonderful person, full of knowledge about the history of the home, and current activities in the area. The breakfasts are amazing five course adventures. A slow relaxed pace and plenty of time to visit with the other guests. We stayed in the Alexander suite, and used our sunroom for a small family gathering seven. I highly recommend this place, and look forward to coming back.

Well I'll be honest that I was a little worried when Richard called us en route to see when we were going to be there because he had to run out. But when we let him know we'd be there right at 4, he said no problem, he just wanted to make sure there was wine waiting for us. Our two night/two breakfast stay was just really amazing. The house is stunning, in fact the photos don't do it justice. We had the Alexander room which was beautiful and has a private porch area that we took full advantage of. There are also a million places to lounge around the house. Quite classical music follows you throughout the house, just quiet enough to set a relaxing atmosphere. Richard was beyond nice, and made it a point to ensure that I was fully caffeinated at all times, by my request. Breakfast takes two full hours, not because he's slow at all, but because there are so many courses, and they are not wimpy portions. A fruit parfait, fritata, salad, even ice cream to top it all off. I swear, we could barely eat dinner those nights. But when we did go out the first night, Richard jumped to make us a reservation at Signature, which was an event in itself and I highly recommend you go. Our experience was just wonderful. I can't imagine how it could have been better. We completely and totally loved it, and if we visit MN in the future, we will absolutely, unquestioningly be staying there again.

The owner, Richard, makes you feel welcome the moment you step into the mansion. He is very accommodating. Richard starts his guests with a five-course breakfast that will amaze you. In the evening, he offers wine and chocolates. The rooms are all splendid, and they each have a private bath. If you need to get away from the stress in your life, this is the place to stay.

This gorgeous period mansion is a MUST stay. The house is beautiful, the rooms are absolute luxury, the meal is amazing, and Richard is a fantastic host. He has thought of every possible detail, from a fridge filled with an array of beverages 24/7, to nightcaps and turndown service, dinner recommendations (Signatures!), luxury bathrobes, and TV's available upon request. My husband and I hope to stay again in the near future.

Our host could not have been more hospitable. We felt at home, immediately. The breakfast was incredible and the history of the house was much more than that. I learned about the town and even how it tied back to what was happening in the entire country throughout the house history. Richard did so much research on his own that he brought us all with him. We were there to attend a wedding in town, but after our stay, we intend to plan a trip with friends in the near future.

Grandpa and Grandma took the kids for the weekend so we spent the weekend in Winona, Minnesota. What a great place to do things, see things, and rest. The Alexander Mansion Met and exceeded our expectations and we do not hesitate to recommend it! Clean, classic, spacious, lots of common areas, great eating and the hose, Richard, was great.

We were truly delighted with our experience here. The home - a true mansion - has been lovingly restored in historic detail by people devoted to doing it right. The rooms were sumptuous, the breakfast a tour de force, and for the proprietor Richard this is clearly an avocation , not merely a vocation. He took exquisite care of us, including thoughtful attention to our various dietary needs. Winona is a charming town, and this was a perfect getaway for us.

Some of the rooms, one in particular has a very small, but authentic bed. I wouldn't want to sleep with the 2 of us in sucha small bed but the couple who had that room loved it!! The house is gorgeous and the 5 course breakfast was very special and delicious. Richard is wonderful host and really loves his home. We will be back!

My husband and I stayed in a lower level apartment-style suite. It was cozy, clean, and comfortable. We had a full kitchen, a living room, the bedroom, and our own entryway. Richard was a wonderful host and made a delicious breakfast! I would recommend staying at this B&B.
5 su febbraio 12, 2012
Personal yet in-obtrusive pampering; delightful and accurate anecdotes concerning history of the home. Even graciously loaned a turn-of-the-century fendora for our evening on the town. Easy to find, nestled close to action, attuned to the rhythm of a more gracious, forgotten way of living.

Our stay at the Alexander Mansion in Winona, MN was wonderful! Richard the innkeeper was so hospitable, friendly, and helpful in meeting all our needs during our visit. We will cherish our recent weekend at the enchanting Alexander Mansion B&B. Every moment was very special - the evening wine and cheese, the beautiful DC Alexander Suite with the 4-season sun porch and the 5-star breakfasts. The highlight of our stay...we got engaged under the clear starry night sky in the park across the street from the mansion. Richard, Teague and Sarah, thank you for making our stay so relaxing. We look forward to returning soon -- be it for the holidays, our wedding, honeymoon and anniversaries!

My husband and I took a wonderful day trip down the Wisconsin Great River Road from Prescott to Fountain City. We were looking for an interesting and special place to stay for the night. The crossover from Fountain City to Winona, MN is worth a trip across the river. We have stayed at a number of bed and breakfasts and the Alexander Mansion is definitely the most elegant and authentic one we've visited. Our hosts Richard and Tieg were very welcoming. It started with a tour of the home and a late afternoon treat of wine and cheeses which we enjoyed on the front porch. Martha's room is beautiful and the feather bed is so plush and comfortable we didn't want to get up in the morning. The allure of the 4-course breakfast is worth getting up for. Great coffee, fresh fruit with cream, spice cake, quiche, butterscotch ice cream with a cream and cinnamon topping.WOW! What a relaxing way to step back to a more elegant time. We are definitely planning a return visit.

We stayed in the suite with the second floor "sun room" porch. The porch was so inviting, that we spent the morning enjoying the sun in the privacy of our own little secluded sun room and didn't even leave the house, until after our fantastic breakfast! We travel a lot and I found this B&B absolutely amazing!

We were initially surprised with the beauty of the restored mansion, but were then impressed with the service and high quality of the food served. The new ownership has years of innkeeping experience and it shows in the little details: you don't want to miss the Alexander if you like the B&B experience. A+++

The Inn is breathtaking from the moment you walk in the door. Our room (actually it was a suite!) was perfect - including room for our daughter. From coffee on the huge porch, wine and cheese in the afternoon, and chocolate on the pillow, all details were attended to. Now let me say a little something about breakfast - what feast. From fresh fruit with amaretto cream, the most sublime chocolate torte, quiche, to the service to the dessert, each day a different menu - what can I say? Well, one more thing I can say is that the innkeeper, Richard, is a sweetheart. Don't miss this one...

After much researching, my two daughters and their husbands chose Alexander Mansion as the site for our "annual family get-together" this year. After spending 3 relaxing and thoroughly delightful days there we were in unanimous agreement that they couldn't have made a better choice! From the moment we walked in we felt as though we'd been transported back in time to a more gracious way of living. The decor throughout the mansion has been lovingly researched and restored to the time period when it was built. It is the most attractive we've seen in our B&B stays throughout the United States and the British Isles. The window dressings in each room are "a work of art" in themselves. The antique Victorian furnishings and accessories are exquisite and yet the atmosphere is comfortable and inviting throughout the mansion. The staff was exceptionally helpful in assisting with our daughter & son-in-law's 25th wedding anniversary celebration, in suggesting restaurant choices and tourist attractions in the area, and in supplying our needs throughout the day...Seldom have we encountered a more attentive and thoughtful staff in our travels. The breakfasts each morning were a gourmet delight and we especially enjoyed the opportunity to visit with the owners, Fred and Lynn, during breakfast on the final day of our stay. Finding Alexander Mansion was like discovering a rare and exciting treasure! We look forward to a return visit!

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in the D.C. Alexander Suite. It was very roomy with beautiful decor and an amazingly comfortable bed. We had our own bathroom with tub/shower and the best part, a 4 season porch. We spent most of our time out on the porch reading, playing scrabble and sipping wine. The breakfast wasn't the best we've had at a B&B but it was good. The nightly cheese and wine was ok...nothing special. The wine offered was very dry and the cheese just seemed to be from the local grocery store. Other B&B's we've stayed at have offered a variety of wine (dry to semi-sweet to sweet) and a variety of expensive cheese and crackers. The one other thing that could be improved upon is the dog poop on the lawn. I thought it was odd for a place like this to have piles of dog poop on the side lawn. Pretty gross. Overall though, we really enjoyed our stay!

I travel a lot & have stayed in many 4-5 star hotels. From the glass of wine poured upon my arrival, to the surprise coridal nightcap waiting for me upon retiring for the evening, with the finally breakfast that was to die for...the experience was one of THE BEST I have encountered! The inn is so beautiful...the innkeepers, Lynn and Frederic, were most gracious...it's simply a MUST STAY!

We loved Alexander's Mansion B&B and stayed in Maude's room. The rooms and common areas were exquisite with beautiful furnishings. You can tell that each antique was lovingly chosen. Breakfast was delicious with fresh fruit topped with amaretto cream, fresh scones, a yummy entry, and, as a special treat, ice cream. Hosts Fred and Lynn were extremely helpful and we enjoyed spending time with them while sipping wine and munching cheese, crackers, nuts and fruit in the stunning library at the end of the day. We have stayed in many B&B in Minnesota and other states and Alexander's Mansion is truly one of a kind. The closest I'll ever be to staying in a castle!

The restoration of this beautiful mansion was a sight to see, everything from the crown molding to the beautiful fixtures, curtains, and original woodwork. We came in a little later, because of an emergency, but their staff waited until we arrived. Soft music through the main floor enhanced our tour of this colossal wonder. Although our room was smaller and cozy, the soft colors and decor made us feel right at home. The bed and linens felt soft and comfortable. The private bathroom was clean and well kept. We were ready for breakfast early, so we went down to get a cup of coffee and tea. Unfortunately, they weren't prepared for decaf or hot tea drinkers! The staff quickly prepared hot water and fresh coffee and we were able to enjoy our first cups on the peaceful screened in front porch. The cozy patio furniture and educational history books on Winona, had us forgetting about the morning chill. We could smell the four course breakfast as we made our way into the dining room. The place settings made us feel like royalty. There were two other couples who sat down as well, and it was a great way to get to know why others had made their way to beautiful Bluff Country. The staff of students were very nice, but looked like they may have had a late night :). The breakfast was good, the cornflakes in the parfait were interesting, the scone was perfect and warm, the quiche was slightly underdone, but the ice cream was a winner. Overall we were pleased with our experience. Its is a little expensive but I think a bed and breakfast experience is better when you can stay 2 nights and allow more time to enjoy how this place will appeal to all your senses!

Our week in Winona was a restful and pampered retreat thanks to Lynn and Frederic's attention to detail. From the fabulous 4 course breakfast served on elegant place settings to the cordial and chocolate turndown service at night, we felt like royalty. I spent the hot afternoon hours reading on the gorgeous front porch and we enjoyed Frederic's company at the afternoon happy hour. The B & B is perfectly located for exploring Winona on foot or on the tandum bicycle available to guests. From delicious dining options, a not to be missed historical museum, the library and tour of the Watkin's museum, it is all just a short walk from the Alexander Mansion. Lynn and Frederic's research of the Victorian period is evident throughout the home. Meticulous attention is paid to furnishings and hospitality. For a treat, Signature's Restaurant is not to be missed! Be sure to ask about the before and after photos that show how far this house has come! Our favorite B & B experience EVER!!

My girlfriend & I stayed at the Alexander Mansion on Saturday, October 9th. Like the title says, this was the first trip to a bed & breakfast for both of us, so neither of us were quite sure what to expect. I booked the room approx. 3 weeks in advance & was surprised to find that the best room, the Durand room, was available at $250/night. A little pricey I thought. Check-in was between 4:30-6:00 PM, but I called & advised them I would be showing up after 7:00 PM, which they were fine with. When we arrived to the house around 7:30pm we were greeted by two young girls in the late teen's/early 20's. I was promptly charged for the room, & then given a brief (2 minutes) tour of the mansion. The young girl showing us around said she had only worked there a short time, & even forgot the name of the room we were staying in. Being we showed up late, I forgave the brief introduction & short "tour". The Durand room was beautiful, music was playing & the lights were dimmed when we walked in, very romantic. The decor & attention to detail in remodeling the home was remarkable. The bed was super comfortable, we slept well, & the bath/shower was nice. Breakfast was at 9:00 AM, if we had been told beforehand we could get breakfast in bed we would have, but no one told us that. Breakfast was served by another band of teenagers. We ate with two other couples at breakfast; none of us had met the innkeepers. They advertised a 4-course breakfast. We were served a glass filled with yogurt, fresh fruit & granola, a scone, & a baked 2-egg omelet with a few chopped veggies, finished off with an optional scoop of ice cream. It was a more continental breakfast than anything else. All in all, we had a really great time, & can't imagine the overall B&B experience being much better than it was here, & we didn’t even get to meet the innkeepers. We will definitely consider staying here again.
