The Southern Hotel

My husband & I began our love affair with the Southern Hotel in 1996 when we stayed there on our honeymoon in May. Bob & I became friends, not just patrons, of Mike & Barbara. When she passed away suddenly a few years ago in the fall we were stunned at our sense of loss. In May of 2009 we returned & Mike had remarried; her name is Cathy. No one man should ever be so lucky as to be married to two equally as wonderful women. Cathy is a great cook, just as Barbara was. But Cathy has put her own stamp on interpreting hospitality for the Southern. She has added great recipes & caters to the gluten-free crowd. Most importantly perhaps for Bob and I, she is very sensitive to his newly developed needs as a diabetic. We are sure to call ahead & inform Mike and Cathy that we are coming; realize that it is a small town (one of the reasons we love going there), but that means that purchasing choices are severely limited. They go to St. Louis to make sure they have what they need. There was a time when I could not have imagined the Southern Hotel without Mike and Barbara; now I cannot imagine it without Mike and Cathy. What has not changed is the great care given to the upkeep of the building. If you are looking to get away from our high-tech world and slow down to get reacquainted, go to the Southern Hotel. Enjoy the antiques. Listen to the stairs squeak when you walk upstairs, and imagine who has trod upon them over the centuries. Soak leisurely in a clawfoot bathtub, instead of taking a 2-minute shower. Play a game of billiards, and think of the journey the table made to be there for you...Mike can tell you that story, along with many others. Mike and Cathy will make you feel at home, and you will rediscover romance. Be sure to record your impressions in the journals included on the nightstand of every room. We have stayed in several of the rooms...perhaps you will read about our ongoing love story when you write down yours!!

The gracious hospitality of Mike and Cathy made our 30th wedding anniversary weekend very special. We were directed to a great restaurant, entertained with the history of Ste. Genevieve and The Southern Hotel, and treated like family. Breakfast was superb, our room was delightful and so unique. It was definitely a time to remember for a long time. Thanks Mike & Cathy

The innkeepers went out of their way to make my stay there outstanding. I had special requirements being there on a motorcycle trip and they saw to it that they were met. It was great with guest from all over staying at the same time, it was like one big family.

Room was over-priced for accommodations. Food was only luke warm. Only one small mirror in room. Throw rug was easily tripped on.

My wife and I had a lot of fun staying at the Southern Hotel. The wine and cheese reception was a great time to meet the other guests. We stayed in the Lullabelle room. The hotel is very quiet at night. Sleeping was great. Breakfast with the other guests was also a lot of fun. we will definitely go back!!

This is a beautiful place to stay. It's within walking distance of the historic downtown area; the rooms are comfortable; the owners are friendly.

I've stayed at several of the different lodging choices in Ste. Genevieve over the last few years and I would recommend this one highly. Mike and Barbara are wonderful. Staying there is like coming home. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Breakfast is heavenly.

This was our first experience in a B&B and we were very happy with our stay. The owners of this beautiful old building take great pride, and rightfully so, in this elegant and charming hotel. I would certainly reccomend this to anyone looking for a break from the same old routine.

This was a planned trip for the Jour De Fete weekend with classmates and one our dear classmates passed away suddenly so it turned into a time for all to be together and share stories about our dear friend and spend time with his wife. The Innkeepers, Mike and Cathy were so kind to our friend when she arrived they had a card and flowers for her. This to me was a very lovely and outstanding gift which made her happy. The remembered her and her husband from past visits. This was my husband and myself's first time at this B&B and truly felt at home and the innkeepers made you feel that way. Thanks for a great weekend!

My sister booked my Husband and me the Buttons and Bows room with the 2 claw foot tubs... it was spectacular... we just sat there and opened our cards from the wedding :) The breakfast was great too, I just love this place!!!!

My husband and I spent our 5th anniversary here and it was very nice. The garden is lovely and the breakfast was delicious. Our room was very quaint.

This place is amazing, the work that has been put into it shows. The Hosts, are wonderful, and Mike can tell you a lot of history!! We felt like time froze and it was very romantic. We came for our niece's wedding and found a piece of home away from home, since we come from the Quebec and speak french. We expected to visit St-Louis but instead stayed in Ste-Genevieve and discovered the historic french side of this part of the country. Plus we were welcomed by Mike and Katie as if we had knowed them forever, sympatic, attentioned to every details and needs. They have a "feel good" home were there is so many things to see and discover, all kinds of antiquities and souvenirs, very romantic. Everywhere it is spotless and the meals are delicious. I don't have enough space to write everything I would like. Just take the detour it is worth it.

If you are into old Southern surroundings, you will love the Southern Hotel. I felt like I was in a western classic film. Loved it! Will go back!

Very safe, clean, and friendly town! Mike, as well as National historic sites in St Genevieve, provided us with a wealth of information that made for an enjoyable experience in which we learned, also.

The Southen Hotel is always such a treat to for my husband and I. We have stayed there every year since we've gotten married, and we're going on 5 yrs. The ambience of the house and each room will truly take you back to a more simple and romantic era. From the beautiful music that is heard throughout the gathering areas, to the wine and cheese hour that brings everyone to the parlor for a laugh and a story or two, you will immediately feel at home here. The rooms are beautiful and and the furniture and decor is each of them are simply unique and outstanding. The double claw-foot bath tub makes the "Buttons and Bows" room our favorite romantic retreat of all! There's nothing like waking up under an antique canopy bed to see the December sun start to stream in from the over sized frosty window, knowing you're about to go down and have one the best cups of coffee and tasty hot breakfast you will ever have! The owners, Mike and Barbara, are the ones the make your experience so unique and delightful. They greet us at the door each time with a hug and the warmest welcome. Always anxious to meet our needs and wants including helping us out with making dinner reservation, they truly make us feel as though we are personal guests in their home. My husband and I always look forward to our romantic weekend spent at the timeless Southern Hotel!

This is a Great place to get away. We took a church group, and had a blast.

We actually ended up staying in the bed & breakfast because we had a mixup with our reservation at the hotel in town, but upon arrival, Mike was very inviting. He personalized the experience and showed us around the building, and the following morning, he had a wonderful breakfast for us and explained the whole history of the building. Plus, each of the 3 rooms my party stayed in had its own story and theme. Mike definitely made our first B&B experience worthwhile. This B&B is highly recommended if you want to stay somewhere with character and a history.

Mike is a fantastic host. I especially enjoyed the complimentary wine & cheese each evening, because it gave us a chance to talk to both the host and the other guests. The history of the hotel and the surrounding area was facinating. We will be staying there again for sure.

Mike & Barb are such wonderful people & they have recreated a step back in time that should not be missed by anyone.

HAD A GREAT TIME

While we are certainly not experts on staying at B & B’s, we’ve been to a few, all in Missouri. The Southern Hotel tops our list. Part of the charm is the fact that both Mike and Barbara personally took a decrepit old building and restored it back to all its glory with furnishings that are very interesting (and also have a history of their own.) During many of our visits, we’ll prevail upon Mike to tell us the stories of how Barbara found this wonderful old building, and once purchased, how he and Barbara renovated and furnished the grand Southern Hotel. But the major reason that we keep coming back to the Southern Hotel can be summed up in one word: Hospitality. Mike and Barbara always make us feel that we are welcome guests in their home; they are experts in what Hospitality really means!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Southern. The breakfast was outstanding, and chatting with the other guests made the stay even more memorable. We were so impressed with all the restorations done to this historic building, and the signed quilt idea is so unique! Only one minor negative worth mentioning. It would have been nice to know beforehand that some of the rooms (including the Quilt Room, where we stayed) do not actually have bathrooms with doors. Our toilet was behind a short wooden folding screen. Anyone who values privacy regarding bodily functions would definitely want to make sure to request a room that has a door on the bathroom, and anyone with difficulty climbing stairs would most assuredly want a second floor room, as I believe I passed mountain goats on my way to the third floor, where my room was located. All in all, though, Mike and Barbara were gracious hosts, and I would recommend this B & B.

Lots of Southern hospitality! Lovely bed and breakfast. We would have preferred a shower along with bathtub in room. Otherwise we loved the atmosphere.

Mike and Barbara are the best. We have stayed in B&Bs all across the USA and none compare to the Southern Hotel.
