This was my third visit to Boston, and the longest one. In contrast to previous short visits to this charming and expensive city, I had to find an inexpensive solution, and I count myself extremely lucky to find John Jeffries House. In addition to beeing very much affordable, it is located in the center of everything (20 meters to Charles/MGH stations and walking distance to most city attractions), it is beatyful and comfortable (bathromms and kitchens in every studio room are very convenient), it is very clean and the staff is very kind and helpful. My friends who chose to stay in 200-dollars-a-night hotels deeply envied my conditions. I strongly recommend JJH to all Boston visitors.
Pros:
Great location-- easy access to the T, to the river, to Beacon Hill (my favorite part of Boston).
Friendly enough staff, though an email w/ my credit card info "wasn't received," which was a concern.
Very pretty fascade-- cute side garden. Obviously well cared for.
Great price for all the above, BUT...
Cons:
Walls are paper thin-- I woke up a few times during the night to hear other people in their rooms and the hallway.
The "Breakfast" part of "Bed and Breakfast" was pretty lame. It was essentially stale, tasteless baked goods, bad coffee and overly rip fruit. Very disappointing. We had to go buy our breakfast elsewhere, which, I think defeats the purpose of a B&B.
I was in a room in the basement that had what looked like mold in the corner of the room-- a little disconcerting.
And I found several hairs on the extra pillow in the closet. Decided to not use it as a result. Perhaps a more thorough cleaning of the sheets et al would have been appropriate.
The room we had was clean, well maintained. The lighting is a little dim. The staff was very helpful. Housekeeping went above and beyond as my daughter left something, we called, she checked, called me back and put it at the front desk. Coffee and hot water were always available as well as a fruit bowl which was much appreciated. The common room was spacious and very inviting. It's located right across from the T. We were very pleased with our stay.
My name is Caitlyn Burns and I have visited Boston 3 times before this last one, but I have to say that this was the best stay so far. The John Jeffries House was amazing in just about every way. The location is great and it is so easy to get to any attraction you want to visit. The staff was so friendly and made sure they did anything they could to ensure the happiness of their guests. The room was also gorgeous itself and accomodated all of our needs. I would definately stay there again and probably will the next time I go up to Boston.
I looked all over the internet for a decently priced place to stay for three adults (2 parents one teen) that was near a metro stop and within walking distance to "old Boston" John Jeffries House is perfect. It is right across the street from Charles MGH metro stop (the "T"). Using the "T", walking and the occasional taxi you can get everywhere a tourist might like to go.
(Oh yes, the Silverline bus will take you from the airport to the metro so you don't even need a taxi from the airport) Cost is $2.00 per ride on the metro.
Breakfast in the morning is pastries and coffee. Fruit is available all day long (nice). The shared sitting room is lovely and homey.
We stayed in room 402 (one large room) it is bright and sunny but the AC doesn't work too well - a fan in the window worked great (not much closet space). We also stayed in room 408 it's not bright and sunny but the AC works great (this has a living area and a separate bedroom. The bedroom fits the bed and an end table. If you're skinny it will also fit two people ;) . There is a lot of closet space. (By the way both rooms have a kitchenette).
There is no coffee in the rooms so nominate someone to go down and get it or better yet walk up Charles street and get coffee from Starbucks.
You can store your bags on your departure day but they are in a common storage area and not under lock and key.
All in all this was a great place to stay.
