I recently stayed at the Inselhaus while doing a speech at Western Illinois University. In short, Dorothee has perfected the art of hosting. Coffee was delivered to my room for walkup, breakfast was delicious, and the home is stunning. My room was comfortable, well decorated, and the sheets were cozy. The icing on the cake was that Dorothee packed me a breakfast for my 7 am train and drove me to the station!!! A+++++ !

As a musician I travel and have the pleasure of seeing and staying in many places. The Inselhaus is an oasis of simple elegance. Not pretentious but first class all the way. This was my first B&B experience and I absolutely loved it! Dorothee was so much fun and so friendly. The room was amazing, clean and comfortable. The breakfast was served at a large table with other guests and was delicious. She had wine waiting on us when we arrived and we were served coffee on the porch early in the morning. Such a delight and we had a private jewelry showing. What more could you ask for! Would definitely go there again!

My husband and I had a belated Valentine's day celebration at the Inselhaus Bed and Breakfast. What a treat it was!! Dorothee could not have been more fantastic and welcoming. The house was beautiful and immaculate, the room so very comfortable and again clean. We had a lovely evening chatting with our innkeeper and learning the history of the house and a bit about the city itself. A must inn to visit and a great innkeeper to be pampered by. One of our friends gave us a gift certificate for a one night stay at the Inselhaus as a wedding gift. My wife and I are both in our mid 20's and had never been to a B&B before and honestly we always though we were too young to enjoy a B&B. However since we received the stay as a gift we figured we would give it a shot. Dorothee quickly changed our mind about B&Bs the moment we walked in the door! She was very inviting and made us feel right at home. We stayed in Room 1 and the room and private bathroom were very nice and clean! Our certificate included the strawberry and champagne, rose petal turndown, and breakfast in bed. When we first arrived Dorothee brought up chocolate covered strawberry and small bottle of champagne. The strawberries were dipped in chocolate and were very delicious and fresh. She asked what our plans were for the evening and we told her about a couple restaurants we though about trying. She gave us suggestions on which ones she preferred and then told us that she had tickets to a charity wine tasting event at Western Illinois University. She had two tickets that she was not able to use and offered them to us! We had never been to a wine tasting before but had recently been getting into wine so it was perfect. After the wine tasting we went to the restaurant she suggested (Shiloh's) and had a wonderful meal. Upon returning to our room our bed was covered in rose petals that was a part of our package. She also set out another plate of chocolate covered strawberries and gave us another small bottle of champagne! The certificate was just for one set of strawberries and champagne so we were pleasantly surprised by this. The next morning she brought us breakfast in bed and everything was very delicious! Dorothee is a great hostess and she changed our mind forever about B&B's. I would definitely recommend Inselhaus to anyone, whether it is your very first B&B or 100th, you will not be disappointed!

This was a real treat staying at Inselhaus before our annual Cornerstone Festival visit. It was such a nice visit and Dorothee could not have been more pleasant or kind. Both of the rooms we stayed in were very clean and had plenty of space. The breakfasts were lovely and we had plenty to eat as well.

I have traveled the world and have stayed in many B&Bs over the years, some pretty some not so pretty. When I arrived in Macomb I did not expect much of the B&B since Macomb is somewhat off the beaten track. I was in for a surprise! Not only was the Inn in a gorgeous turn of the century, freshly renovated house, but it also it' interior was designed in a comfortable, homey style. The rooms were exceptionally clean, the decor contemporary and the love for detail amazing. I immidiatky felt at home. The whole experience was made perfect by the Innkeeper Dorothee's attention to your every need, from tea to the front of your door in the morning, to home baked cookies with your glass of wine at night. The breakfast too was exquisite. I didn't want to leave. I wish Macomb were closer to where I live and I would spend every other weekend there, making it my home away from home. I highly recommend the Inselhaus, there should me more people like Dorothee around that take customer service so seriously and seem to enjoy it too.

We would never have gone to Macomb, which is in far West Central Illinois, except that we heard about the fine European hospitality at Inselhaus Bed & Breakfast. Our experience there surpassed our expectations, and German native Dorothee Gossel is a truly professional innkeeper. We arrived in late afternoon, and enjoyed fresh baked goodies and wine in the parlor of this fully renovated 110 year old mansion. The other guest and innkeeper provided erudite and sophisticated conversation before it was time for dinner. We dined on Macomb’s square with a bird’s eye view from the second floor of Shiloh restaurant, and the gourmet offerings were surprising, delicious, and beautifully presented. After lingering over dinner and enjoying a cool summer evening, we arrived back at Inselhaus to a bed covered in rose petals, champagne, and two glasses by our bedside. What a lovely night, and the bed and room were so comfortable and tastefully decorated. Every room at Inselhaus has its own scrupulously clean bathroom with new gleaming fixtures and luxury bath products from Gilchrist & Soames of London. Breakfast was served in bed at 10AM, and included eggs benedict, juice, and a fresh fruit cup with yogurt and granola. Since Macomb is so near the Iowa border, we crossed the Mississippi River to Iowa and enjoyed a tour of Keokuk and Fort Madison. Dinner was at Magnolia’s the second night, which is in another beautifully restored building on Macomb’s square with a Southern flair gourmet menu. We passed the evening in the enchanting company of our innkeeper and then retired to our lovely room #1. Coffee was served on the second story balcony and an early breakfast to accommodate our schedule was just as well-prepared as the previous morning’s meal. We enjoyed the rest, romance, gourmet repast, rose petals, and Dorothee Gossel’s special brand of European hospitality!

We spent one night at the Inselhaus and definitely plan to return! For the same price as a local hotel you get personalized service in a warm and inviting atmosphere with personal amenities that make you feel right at home. The breakfast was delicious, and Dorothee is a delight--she does a wonderful job of making you feel comfortable! If you are in the area I highly recommend you check this place out.

I was thoroughly charmed with the attentiveness to my needs from the minute I arrived. The innkeeper added to the overall attention to details and comfort. A glass of wine and cookies in the evening were another grace note. Breakfast was beyond my expectations. It was the delicious main meal of my day. This is a great oasis in the Illinois plains.

The Gossel's have done an outstanding job of making this house into a quant B&B with a lot of history. Dorothee fixes an outstanding breakfast and can tell you anything you need to know about the area and is quite involved locally. The rooms are quiet and very clean. It is for sure the best place to stay while in Macomb. Our family has stayed here many times.

It was grand old house where my mother was born just after the turn of the last century. Over the next 90 years it fell into wreck and ruin. Dorothee Gossel restored it to its former glory and any stay there is a return to the grace, warmth and elegance of an era long gone by. Delicious food, attention to detail, make you want to return again and again!

We enjoyed an Anniversary Weekend, it was very romantic. We loved the rose petal turn-down service, as well as chocolate covered strawberries. It was quiet but not boring. This house has been newly remodeled and it shows. We visited during the holiday season and the decorations were tasteful, not overdone. The food was a tad fancier than we are used to eating; but was good nonetheless. We appreciate that the water was always hot and that the rooms were very clean (including all the linens). We had an early travel day on the day we left and the innkeeper was up a 5am with hot coffee and goodie bags for the road; we were extremely grateful for this extra touch of service which speaks worlds about the care put into every guest.

My stay with Dorothy was far beyond anything I could have ever expected. The furnishings are impeccable and the food is amazing. My girlfriend and I just came back from a 4 night stay at the Inselhaus bed and breakfast and it was absolutely perfect! The room was very clean, quiet, and cute - it made us feel like we were at home. The service by Dorothee and her staff was great as well. My girlfriend does not like eggs, so she patterned the breakfasts around our special requests. Plus, Dorothee was there morning and evening, offering such things as wine and champagne with cookies in the evenings. We were in town for a small family reunion, so this allowed us to get away each night for a relaxing night's sleep and have a wonderful home cooked breakfast with fresh juices/coffee in the mornings.

Travelling 1100 miles to a B & B may seem crazy but after staying 5 days at the Inselhaus we would consider it to stay again. Having stayed at many B & B's on the east coast our expectations are high. All of our expectations were meet or exceeded. The rooms are as beautiful as any B & B we have ever stayed.Our group stayed in 4 of the 6 rooms. Attention to detail is deliberate and tasteful. Being in the construction field I was able to appreciate the magnitude of the renovation Dorothee under took in transforming her B & B into the finest restoration I've seen. Dorothee the innkeeper has the wonderful talent of becoming your best friend the moment she meets you knowing your wishes and needs the way only a best friend could. The breakfast was a treat each morning and if anyone in our group wished for something different it was provided at a moments notice. Relaxation is the order of the evening on the front porch each evening. Our stay was also provided with perfect weather and I would not be surprised to find out Dorothee had something to do with that as well.

I was traveling on business and found the website listing and decided to give it a try especially given the paucity of lodging in Macomb. I was very surprised at the quality of the room and the kindness of the host. The room and bathroom were very clean with nicely appointed linens and tolietries. The host (who owned a B & B in Germany)immediately puts you at ease and has an informal gathering at 8 pm with complimentray wine, beer or coffee. Bottled water and coffee (strong German blend) are always available and the breakfast was good and hearty without that overly fatty fare that is too common in the Midwest. The value of the room ($89.00 in 2007) was enough to make me feel gulity I had to leave the next day! All business and pleasure travelers should make this a stop on their trips.

I felt like part of the family, everything was wonderful. Food was excellent and plenty. Rooms and house was spotless. Everyone was friendly - - I hated to leave! (I felt like a queen!)
