University Quarters Bed & Breakfast & Suites

Peter and Paula made us feel at home in their gorgeously decorated B&B. Everyone who worked there and all the other guests who stayed there were equally as friendly. The added bonus was Tuxedo, the wonderfully friendly cat! I've already stayed 3 times and plan many more visits.

We stayed at Peter and Paula Schuler's bed and breakfast on a college trip to the University. The rooms were clean, the owners were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very healthy with good variety. There was a pleasant family feeling among the guests. Hightly recommended.

We definitely had a lovely visit while we were there. We were very comfortable in the house, and the bed was wonderful. It’s the best sleep I’ve had in weeks!! We are looking forward to a repeat visit sometime in the future. Thank you so much for helping to make our getaway weekend so comfortable and relaxing. After having had a particularly stressful week at work, it was just what we needed!!

I chose this B&B due to the proximity to University of Chicago as my daughter was moving into an apartment. The owners were lovely and the atmosphere was immediately welcoming. I was so thrilled to have my breakfast made for me while I was seated in the breakfast nook! I hope to visit again. :)

We came for a weekend workshop at the Institute of Christ the King Catholic Church just a few blocks away. We chose the Inn for convenience, but had a wonderfully relaxed experience in addition. Peter and Paula were terrific and helpful hosts who directed us to good eating places near the University of Chicago campus. The Inn felt like a home away from home! Recommended.

I had to visit the University Medical Center for some tests and my husband and I found the University Quarters B&B via an internet search. It is a lovely place with great character, very nice rooms, and great hosts, Peter and Paula. We walked to the campus and to dinner, never feeling the slightest bit uncomfortable with our surroundings. Peter was very helpful with dinner and entertainment suggestions and also about some history of the area. As a guest you have the run of the place as if it were your home. The kitchen is stocked with snacks and drinks (coffee, tea, water) for any time of day. There is free internet access and a TV. There are two sitting areas, one off the kitchen with tends to be where guests gather. However if you want a more quiet place, the room right inside the front door is lovely and people tend to read and relax there. An extra special treat is Lulu and Tux, the owners dog and cat. They are trained to not enter the quest rooms, but will roam the house if all guests agree. It was nice to have Lulu come and sit at my feet while I read a book. It made me feel as if I were visiting old friends. I would not hesitiate to return should my travels take me to the Chicago area. Great place !

We spent the Thanksgiving weekend with Peter and Paula in Chicago and were extremely impressed with their lovely University Quarters B&B. Our initial hesitations about the location--south of the U of Chicago campus--were quickly dispelled by the friendly welcome and terrific accommodations. Our room was small but meticulously clean, comfortable, and well-appointed, with a private bath. We were especially impressed with our hosts, who went far beyond the call of duty in offering advice and service (and excellent breakfasts). Peter's real estate knowledge even helped us advise our Hyde Park daughters about possible apartment purchases in the area!

Paula and Peter were incredibly thoughtful hosts. I loved my stay at University Quarters and plan on staying there whenever I am in Chicago in the future. The rooms and food were lovely and you have access to the kitchen anytime for snacks and hot drinks. I highly recommend this B and B!

This B&B provided a good clean comfortable place to stay. The hosts were very helpful with information: how to get around, what was nearby, breakfast was very good.

My wife and I stayed at the University Quarters B&B suites over a weekend in Sep 2009. The house is ideally situated in the Hyde Park district. It is close to the metra line and CTA bus stops - so travel into the city center is very convenient. The room was immaculate and the service we got was great. Peter and Paula were excellent hosts (providing guide books and local infomation). Parking passes were provided for each day of the stay. High speed internet was also freely available. This was a great place to stay and i would highly recommend it to anyone travelling to Chicago.

My family is from Austria/Europe but my father has been living and working in Fargo, ND, for the last three years. That's the reason most of my relatives suddenly started travelling to Fargo and, being sort of close to the Great Lakes already, took the chance to go and visit Chicago. Now, Chicago is definitely a place to see, however accomodation which is not a long way off downtown can turn out really expensive. But we were lucky to have an American friend who had heard of University Quarters Bed & Breakfast, a lovely place South of Midway Plaisance (right at the edge of the University of Chicago). Public transport is close (both Metra line and bus line 6 are within walking distance) and will take you downtown in about 15 minutes. We stayed in Chicago for four nights and we definitely can recommend the B+B to everybody. University Quarters Bed & Breakfast offers very nice, clean and comfortable rooms with a stylish design. You can decide for yourself if you prefer a private bathroom or if you don't mind sharing it with another room (which never caused a problem). Our bathroom had a bubble tub which we found especially relaxing after walking around in Chicago a lot. Breakfast is served in the kitchen and you can get almost anything you want. Besides, the kitchen also works as a meeting place as you will encounter most of the other guests there. We engaged in several talks in the evening and loved the nice and lively atmosphere of this. Peter and Paula Schuler both do a great job hosting the place. They are very friendly and likeable people, and they offer a great service to their guests. If we come back to Chicago (which we are planning to do) we will certainly stay with them again.

We found a great place away from the mainstream downtown hotels in a lovely area adjacent to the Univ. of Chicago, in Hyde Park. The University Quarters is small,as is one of the rooms, but the total atmosphere gives one a sense of "hominess". Peter and Paula Schuler were truly hospitable and helpful and the home-cooked, satisfying breakfasts were shared with other guests, all with a connection to the University, were stimulating. I work for the University of Chicago and have housed many visitors to campus at the University Quarters B&B. Paula and Peter are incredibly warm and friendly. I highly recommend staying with them if you are planning to visit campus or Hyde Park.

I really enjoyed staying at University Quarters, the accomdatations were very clean and welcoming, and I really enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere.

My husband and I, or just me, frequently go to Chicago to visit our son & his family, two grandaughters, who live in Hyde Park. I normally don't select B & B's as they're often too "cute" for my taste. However tried Paula & Peter's B & B-- what a gem, and relief! You feel that you're in a friendly & comfortable home that is very tastefully decorated. Both P & P are very accomodating and friendly; it seems that they have all the time in the world to help with plans, directions or problems. After returned to Ca. from our last visit, I immediately got a small espresso maker as Paula completely sold me on morning lattes. There are very limited hotel choices in S. I was running a conference and needed a friendly home atmosphere to hang out in when I wasn't stressed out, or even when I was. This B and B is just perfect--they understood exactly what I needed in terms of atmosphere, food, and conversation--tended to my every need. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to make their stay in Hyde Park a really good one.

I stayed at the University Quarters B&B for two weeks. Without exageration,it was the best place I've ever stayed. The place was immaculate, the hosts, Paula and Peter, exceptionally warm and interesting people to talk to, and they have this rare gift to make people feel special. I had to work hard at the library and it was really nice to come to a very comfortable place where I could relax and have some more work done in the evening. And I still remember Paula's morning lattes -- my husband said I got spoiled in Chicago! I've read some previous reviews and I am glad that many people feel the same. As for the location that one reviewer was uneasy about, I must say I never felt uncomfortable or, let alone, threatened. It was very close to the University campus, and the streets were regularly patrolled by the University security cars. But, of course, Chicago is a big city, and as everywhere in a big city, one has to be careful and use common sense. I highly recommend this place to anybody. Also, it was nice to get a weekly rate for my longer stay. I will definitely stay with Paula and Peter again!

I discovered Paula and Peter's place during my daughter's second year at the University of Chicago, and have been back around 4 times. For a June 2009 trip to help with a post-3rd year move to a summer apartment, I forgot about booking farther ahead because of graduation, and had to stay at the Hyatt at McCormick Place: a sterile comparison. The rooms at UQ are on the small side, but overall, it doesn't matter, because staying there is like a suite experience, with the tasteful living room and kitchen right nearby to hang out in, read, watch TV and check e-mails on your laptop. Paula's breakfasts are excellent, with eggs made to order, fruit, and other things to go along with the coffee and tea. Both Paula and Peter are extremely knowledgeable about the City, and everything that's going on in Hyde Park. When I wanted to get my daughter a spa treatment last year, Paula set us up with her people downtown. It was at a nice boutique hotel I used to stay in and like a lot, but now I get the same kind of thing right in Hyde Park. If you are in to working out, check out the Y right down the street, or the Bally's on 47th. For my daughter's 2010 graduation, I stopped in to see Paula and make my reservation last week. We had a wonderful experience when our family of 9 stayed at the University Quarters for 5 days when our daughter had her wedding at the University of Chicago. Paula and Peter made us feel welcome from the very first phone call when we began to make our arrangements. The Schulers were wonderful hosts and we felt like we were visiting relatives. My daughter said that her wedding was "perfect" and I think the calmness and warmth of the environment were a major part of making her day so special. For someone who wants to go to the U. of Chicago, the location is perfect. And even if you want to visit the rest of the town, the metro is not far and quite convenient. The price of the rooms may be a bit high but the people there are really nice and friendly and everything is made to let you feel comfortable. And I did feel good when I was there. Rooms are clean and the breakfast is great. Alain M.

Once you are INSIDE the BB, everything is great. The owners are extremely kind and helpful, the location is very quiet, the rooms are cozy and spotless clean, and you have snacks and drinks always available and included in the price (which, given the outrageous Chicago standards, is quite moderate). The B&B is also at walking distance (5 minutes) from the University of Chicago. The only problem is that you probably will NOT want to walk around at all. Indeed the BB is exactly where a very dangerous part of the city of Chicago starts. Every single Chicago-savvy person I mentioned this location to (including current residents) was very surprised and somewhat worried. The taxi driver that dropped me off was quite literally amazed and could not believe that a B&B could be found in such location and strongly advised me not to walk beyond the block where the B&B is located. Indeed, while the B&B is great, the neighborhood is quite scary. Would I go back? Probably yes, but before you book a room here do make sure you are aware of the surroundings.

The neighborhoods surrounding the University of Chicago campus -- like those close to many of the world's great universities -- are extremely diverse and have much to offer visitors. Our B&B is two blocks from the University of Chicago Law School where President Obama once taught, and his Chicago home is 10 blocks away. We understand that guests who have not previously traveled to complex and diverse urban neighborhoods are sometimes uneasy when they first arrive. We can assure visitors that both the B&B and the neighborhood are safe, and in our nine years we have never had any problems. The neighborhoods around the campus are constantly patrolled by both the University of Chicago Police and the City of Chicago Police, which helps to ensure the safety of all our guests. Our location makes us ideal for travelers visiting McCormick Place, Soldier Field, Chicago's Museum Campus, the Art Institute, Millennium Park, the Loop, or the shops on Michigan Avenue. What a wonderful place to stay when saying goodbye to your University of Chicago college freshman. I enjoyed delightful and encouraging chats with fellow parents over a tasty breakfast. Helped a lot on the start of "Empty Nesthood." Peter and Paula are both so gracious and the B & B is full of a wide range of periodicals and books to peruse. I recommend it highly for anyone wanting to stay nearby campus at a place with warmth and personality.

My daughter & I were visiting colleges and were SO fortunate to have stayed with Peter and Paula. They were so hospitable and helpful and truly warm and interesting people. The B&B experience was great. We got to meet many people over our 4 night stay and my daughter got to chat with other pre-college students. I would definitely stay at the University Quarters anytime I visit Chicago. Paula & Peter made us love the city. After long days of walking, visiting, travelling via Metra, train, cab etc., it was so so absolutely nice to come back to a home (rather than a hotel room). OH, and the bed and sheets and blankets were SO incredibly heavenly to sleep in.

I stayed at University quarter while I was looking for an apartment in the area. The room and service were excllent and the owners were very nice and helpfu.

My family and I stayed in The Woodlawn Room for several days in September while dropping off our son, who was an incoming first year student at the University of Chicago. Having stayed in a variety of accomodations in Chicago in the past, including large hotels in The Loop and smaller accomodations in Hyde Park, this was by far the most pleasant and convenient for our purposes. Peter and Paula were outstanding hosts. The facility is newly remodeled and immaculate. Our room was cozy with a private bath. As the two other rooms were full, they even went so far as to offer our son an inflatable mattress for a nominal fee so that we might stay with them. Breakfast offerings, drinks, and snacks were plentiful, and included organic products and soy milk, which was most appreciated. A suggestion we made regarding a small improvement to our room was gratefully acknowledged. All this, including parking and a short walk to the university, made it an ideal choice for us, one which we will avail ourselves of in the future.

When I arrived at the University Quarters B&B, I was met by Peter Schuler, who took the time to make me feel right at home. He gave me a tour of the B&B and provided much information about the neighborhood and advice about local restaurants. He also provided menus from the local restaurants providing delivery. I ordered from one of them and this turned out to be a convenient and delicious way to have dinner after a tiring flight. He also introduced me to other guests as they came into the common living room area, and this provided for a homey atmosphere. Later I also met Paula Schuler, who was equally hospitable and willing and able to provide any information requested concerning the neighborhood and greater Chicago. She also provided a delicious breakfast on Saturday morning, complete with fresh berries, freshly brewed coffee and tea, home-baked muffins, and choices of yogurt, cold cereal, and eggs cooked to order. The property looks freshly refurbished and is attractively decorated. Everything was quite neat, clean, and comfortable, including the attractively updated bathroom. My room and one other share the bathroom, but I did not find this inconvenient. My room, though small, was very comfortable with an excellent mattress on the bed and quality linens. It also provided a roomy closet, robe and slippers, and convenient reading lights and clock radio. I highly recommend this B&B to anyone needing accommodations near the University of Chicago.
