Welcome Inn Manor

We stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor a few weeks ago, and had a marvelous time. We stayed in the Nat Cole suite and felt pampered beyond belief by the beautiful room, huge jacuzzi tub, rain shower, and amazingly inviting bed. Mel made breakfasts that were sensational - ask for the spicy sausage! Awesome! Easy access to and from the heart of Chicago, relaxing environment in the B&B, and Mel and Angie's kindness yielded a great stay. When next in Chicago we definitely plan on returning!

This place was amazing

Angie and Mel were very gracious hosts, very friendly and helpful. Great suggestions for places to eat and so nice to have given us rides to several of our destinations. Beautiful house and great art, We would recommend staying with Angie and Mel to our friends!

This was our 3rd or 4th stay at the WelcomeInnManor. We love to location because it is so close to UChicago where our son attends. It takes us about 5 minutes to get to the school. Mell and Angie have truly made us feel that this is our home away from home. They could not be more gracious. Last year on a cold February day, Mell made a delicious soup in the crock pot that was available to quests whenever they felt the need for something warm and comforting. It is really nice to sit in the living room and visit with our son without the distraction of restaurants or roommates. We will continue to stay with Mell and Angie whenever we visit Chicago!

We had a wonderful stay at the Welcome Inn Manor, and the biggest attraction by far was the innkeepers themselves, Mell and Angie. They are both great conversationalists, and gave graciously of their time to make our stay comfortable.

Came and stayed here for Christmas 2012. It doesn't get any better than this! Comfortable, wonderful rooms rich with history. Mell, the Innkeeper, and his wife Angie truly made the 4 of us feel like it was our place. I've been to other B&B's and never felt quite comfortable enough to lounge around the main floor living room. Not here. Felt very comfortable. These are good people that will make you feel like family and go to the extra mile to make your stay more enjoyable. Mell offers rides to various local restaurants and music venues. Not necessarily the touristy areas but places that really give you truly a "local feel". Of course he will offer to take you to the more well-traveled areas (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, etc). Oh, and the food he prepares for breakfast is very well prepared and hearty for a day of sightseeing. Oh, and the the other couple staying there were vegetarians and Mell will prepare special meals if that's a need you have. Tip:All the rooms are exceptional but the Nat King Cole room is second to none. Believe me. tl;dr - Awesome place. Awesome people. Awesome food. For the above rating for service, I wish we could put 6 stars to indicate just how much Mell and Angie go the extra mile to provide outstanding service.

Having never been to Chicago, my fiancee and I had no idea what to expect from a B&B inside the city. We could not have been more fortunate in our decision to use the Welcome Inn Manor for our stay. The innkeepers are great and truly make you feel welcome, as well as giving you a lot of insight into the city and things to do. The room was truly beautiful and extravagant (the jacuzzi was great!) We will definitely be returning in the future and recommend this B&B to anyone traveling to Chicago or anyone who is interested in a relaxing and one-of-a-kind experience

We stayed a total of 3 nights at the end of December, including New Year's Eve. Mell and Angie were gracious hosts and offered us wine and refreshments upon arrival. They gave us a lot of great recommendations about off-the-beaten path spots to go in Chicago. We stayed in the Lady D room, which was cozy and well-decorated. They provided an extra space heater so we could warm our room to our own comfort level. Breakfast was served family-style around a large table with other guests. The breakfasts were large and creative with good use of unique spices. The neighborhood of Bronzeville is undergoing re-gentrification. Street parking is easy and free and literally you can pull up right to their side gate. On our next visit we will try to book the Nat King Cole suite, which was unfortunately already booked during this visit.

The innkeepers are lovely people, and Mell will bend over backwards to help you feel at home and cared for. He drove us places, and did everything he could to keep us entertained - and we especially appreciated the focus on local businesses and taking us "off the beaten path." The house is beautiful & decor is eclectic; the food was great. It's the first B&B I've experienced that didn't tidy up the rooms between nights. But overall, it was a great experience and we would do it again.

Our recent trip to Chicago was greatly enhanced by our stay at the Welcome Inn Manor. Mell and Angie have lovingly restored a great home and enhanced it with wonderful art and historic information. We were made to feel completely at home and given wonderful ideas on things to do and places to dine including a trip to Room 43 for some wonderful jazz. Mell’s “artistic” breakfasts were all we could hope for. Our room was comfortable and wonderfully furnished. With easy access to Chicago’s transit system, the Welcome Inn Manor proved to be a great place to stay. Dave and Diane Nov 2012

What a wonderful experience staying at the Welcome Inn Manor in Chicago. This historic home was well appointed with wonderful furnishings and fabulous artwork throughout. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating to my family for the 3 days that we stayed there. The service was very good and the hosts paid close attention to every detail. I would highly recommend this wonderful B&B to others. A must see.

Great style- My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary at the Welcome Inn Manor B&B. We loved the all natural and well decored style of the inn, its great location to Chicago tourism attractions and a few miles from downtown. Mel and Angie were attentive, but not fussy. They gave us space but were helpful whenever we had questions about Chicago and learning about interesting things to do. We were especially impressed with their suggestions for restaurants with BYOB (bring your own bottle) policies. We ate and drank and ate and drank almost every night after a long day shopping and touring Chicagoland. This B&B was a truly interesting inn and a great find for us. I liked the style of the inn and it was almost perfect in every way. Hats off to the innkeepers- well done. We'll see you next year at our 2014 anniversary- we'll be back!

Welcome Inn Manor was awesome! I do a lot of traveling and have stayed in many Bed and Breakfasts this Bed and Breakfast was one of the best! My suite was amazing, comfortable and quite. I also enjoyed the back deck and let me not forget that incredible breakfast. I can't stop talking about this place to my friends. Ca

The service was outstanding. The rooms and ambience were great along with the food. Only a short taxi ride to restaurants and theaters. This bed and breakfast exceeded my expectations and was a great eperience for me and my wife and I highly recommend it!!

This is my second time staying at a bed&breakfast and this place exceeded my expecations...I've stayed in bed&breakfasts in the Wine Country in Napa Valley California and the service at Welcome Inn Manor far and away exceeds the places I've stayed in at Napa Valley. The Welcome Inn Manor exceeded my expecations because the owners of this place provided superior service...I mean it was more personable and down home then other places I've stayed at, therefore they made my feel right at home...I did not get the sense I was just a transaction with the same old smile and inpersonal service. I felt like the Welcome Inn Manor owners had a vested personable interest in seeing my wife and I be happy and comfortable, and they wanted me to see the whole city of Chicago and not just the favorite tourism spots.. The food was excellent and well seasoned and they always provided more than enough food and wine for my wife and I to enjoy thoughout the day and evening. Well seasoned food is to me a sign of excellent personable service and it shows that you care enough to make sure your guests food is excellent. Good Job !!! I was also was impressed with each room having it's own historical/Jazz theme...Each room was decorated different then the other. I had never seen a place like this before. Most places have the same style/theme in each room but that was not the case with Welcome Inn Manor. Each room in Welcome Inn Manor was unique and I thought this was very cool...Again never seen anything like it before and it shows that Welcome Inn Manor cares about your experience/stay with them that they would make each room different. I will come back just so I can stay in different room. The Welcome Inn Manor is an excellent bed and breakfast and in my opion it really is a outstanding value for the money. My husband and I recently stayed at the Welcome Inn and enjoyed culture and fascinating conversation. The owners are simly wonderful and a joy to speak with as they want you to have the best stay possible. It was a different type of bed & breakfast than were we have previously stayed. The only negative is that you can't walk anywhere--for two reasons, there aren't any restaurants/shops in the immediate neighborhood and the other is that the neighborhood itself does not exactly feel safe although we felt safe coming and going and were told it is safe--just not walking. We loved our experience and learned a lot about the inner workings of Chicago! We were looking for a different Chicago experience since we have been there many times. Goal accomplished as we spent very little time downtown. We would certainly stay with Mel and Angie again!

We had a fantastic stay here. No complaints whatsoever. Mell and his wife who run the place are great people doing great work for the local community. Stunning room (we had the Nat King Cole Suite), wonderful breakfasts and a lovely relaxed vibe to the entire house which is beautifully decked out. Highly recommended. Chris & Rowena

A surprise trip for my husband's birthday had the Welcome Inn Manor as the destination. This house is wonderfully inviting. Every room has a nice feeling of home. We enjoyed a quiet relaxing stay.

The house is beautiful and in a re-gentrifying neighborhood just south of the loop. But the real reason to stay here is Mel and Angie. They treated us like family. My wife and I greatly enjoyed our three-night stay at the Welcome Inn Manor in July 2012. It's a beautiful old home (built in 1892) exquisitely decorated and with super-high ceilings. The hosts, Mell and Angie, are as friendly and interesting as people can be. The common areas downstairs, including the dining room, are beautiful. There we were served breakfasts made by Mell that were so generous that we were set for the day until dinnertime and had no need to stop for lunch as we toured Chicago. There are 3 guest rooms on the 2nd floor. Ours was roomy and comfortable with period furnishings. It has a room with a sink and a toilet and another room with a shower stall. The room we stayed in features a huge oil painting of Dinah Washington in performance. If jazz is your thing, this is your place. There is a fine sound system in the living room on the first floor and we heard nothing but hip sounds coming from it. We also enjoyed the very attractive yard and the deck at the back of the house where we shmoozed and drank wine with other guests. Another asset we took advantage of is the Inn's location. Busses are right there. The Green Line train station is a 5 minute walk and the Red Line is a10 minute walk. This is a place that we can heartily recommend.

If you like a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere this is the place to stay. Welcome Inn Manor is a charming, warmly decorated turn of the century home. Breakfast is wonderful. Room was clean, and a good value. Would we stay at Welcome Inn Manor again? Absolutely! Caution: You do need a sense of adventure as this area of Chicago is transitioning. Properties is the surrounding area are in various stages of repair and decline. We certainly felt safe during our stay at Welcome Inn Manor. Vehicle parking can be a premium in the evening hours. Suggest using Welcome Inn's garaged parking provided at minimal cost. Look forward to our next visit to Chicago and stay at Welcome Inn Manor. Darrell and Lee

The stay was great. I have never felt more at home and welcomed at a Bed & Breakfast. We were welcomed when we arrived and Mel made us feel like we were right at home. We stayed for a week and would definately return. Angie and Mell are very gracious hosts who made sure we had our plans set for the day and helped us get where we needed to be (thank you for the rides!). We especially enjoyed relaxing on the main floor of the house after we were out and about for the day. The house is lovely, and has easy access to public transportation. We were in downtown Chicago in about 20 minutes on the green line.

Even though we offer WiFi and you can do work in one of 4 places in the common areas of our inn, I am still happy to learn that you could put away your laptop and hand held device to just chill out. Enchanting home with lovely hosts in an interesting area of Chicago. Loved the opportunity to explore the nearby areas yet spend time in the middle of the city as we chose! The "L" was a new experience and so easy to use. Food was wonderful and additional guests fun to be around! We found a nearby Jazz event and it topped off our weekend. Good food, good people and very nice property. Really enjoyed my stay with Mell (and Angie). The historic property has been thoroughly restored with love and care. For our 5 year anniversary, my husband and I decided to try a B&B for the 1st time and I don't think we'll ever stay in a hotel again! From the King size bed and fireplaces to the huge jacuzzi tub and dual shower, The Nat King Cole Suite is like something out of a movie. The pictures online really didn't do it justice. Mell and Angie are 2 of the most caring and kind-hearted people we've ever met. They went out of their way to make our stay perfect and Mell's cooking is incredible! He got my husband to try things he never would've tried at home! Overall, our stay was amazing and we'll definitely be going back! We've only been gone a few days and we already miss them! :-)

My girlfriend and I were looking for a weekend getaway in the city, and she told me to check out this place because a friend of hers recently stayed there. I went to their website and instantly fell in love with rooms and the overall decoration of the house. She was hesitant to stay at a B&B, but once we arrived and met Mell she was instantly at ease. The owners were personable; the house instantly puts you at ease and is so full of Chicago history. The atmosphere was very relaxing, the Nat King Cole suit was well worth the money, and the food was excellent…Mell and Angie we will definitely be back.

It all started with my fiance' and I having the idea of wanting to have a weekend getaway at a hotel that had a jacuzzi in the room.....not many do....but then I came across the Welcome Inn Manor and I immediately told my fiance' that that was the place I wanted to go to. The pictures on their website are the actual pictures of this wonderful B&B, but still doesn't do it any justice. You definitely have to see it and experience for yourself! We had no idea what to expect with this being our first stay at a B&B.....but let me say this......you WILL NEVER feel so COMFORTABLE, feel AT HOME, have the OUTSTANDING HOSPITALITY, enjoy NEW AND WONDERFUL MEALS, and experience the TRUE RELAXATION that you are looking for at a HOTEL!!!!!! OMG.....Mell and Angie (Owner of Welcome Inn Manor) are the absolute best! They made our first and very nervous stay at a B&B so easy, comfortable and relaxing. Along with the great hospitality, the great meals, great conversations and the opportunity of meeting new people, comes the EYE OPENING AND JAW DROPPING ROOMS! Every room is breath taking! When we walked into the Nat King Cole Suite, my eyes became bigger than my head.....but when we opened the door to the bathroom, I immediately turned to my fiance' and told him that I NEEDED that bathroom!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I can go on and on and on about the Welcome Inn Manor, but my fiance' told me not to write a book and just leave it up to the people to experience the amazing stay that we had. My husband and I stayed at the Welcome Inn for a belated birthday get away. I cannot tell you how welcoming and wonderful our stay was. The Nate King Cole room is outstanding- incredibly comfortable, spacious and cozy. The entire stay exceeded my expectations, from the great conversation with Mell and Angie, to the accomodations, the hospitality, the food- cannot say enough good things. You both are a great pair. I must tell you that for a finance person, your husband is quite the social butterfly. My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Welcome Inn Manor. The experience was outstanding. The Inn has a very warm ambiance, the decore is fabulous and the Inn keepers were attentive to our every need and request. The food was FABULOUS, and the hospitality and conversations we had with the Inn keepers was off the chain! We highly recommend the Welcome Inn Manor as an alternative to hotel accomendations in the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. We have wonderful memories and made lasting friendships and will be returning as often as possible.

It was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast, and I loved it! I will call Mel and Angie every time I stay in Chicago. Mel is a wonderful cook and a gracious host. The food was delicious, and he definitely made sure we were comfortable. We stayed in the Nat King Cole Suite and the pictures don't do it justice. From the 12' ceilings to the ornate fireplaces and the beautiful antique furniture, this place was quite impressive to say the least. Mel and Angie definitely respect your privacy, but are usually available if you need anything. I will positively refer Welcome Inn Manor to everyone that I know.

Welcome Inn Manor stay Jan 28-30 2012 Wow, wow, and wow that's the feeling we got from our stay at Welcome Inn Manor bed and breakfast of Chicago. Wow, was my first impression of this beautifully restored mansion. The many antiques and sculptures were amazing to behold. My second wow came from our host Mell’s cooking. This man delighted us each morning with a very tasty and wonderfully made breakfast. This was a weekend outing to celebrate my wife’s countless 21’s birthdays. It was our first time at a bed and breakfast as well. And I must say we are hooked, thanks to Mell and Angie’s inviting and charming setting. Mell I will be calling you soon to set up for my big five O birthday party there. Oh, I almost forgot the third wow was for the way you guys help make my wife feel, she wasn’t to sure about going, being, we had never stayed at a B and B before. Nothing she ever found on the internet really caught her eye. She truly loved your place and look forward to coming back. A added wow would have to be for the suite, it was so roomy and comfortable. The whole house made it difficult to leave. Jacuzzi tub with a fire place, and large comfy bed also with a fire place, the Nat King Cole suite is a must stay. Thanks Much Have a bless 1 The Loves

The rooms and public spaces are beautiful, clean and comfortable. Mel bends over backwards to make everybody feel welcome. The neighborhood is "evolving," as they say, but it still felt safe to be walking or driving around. The architecture in the area is beautiful and ripe for more revival.

This was our first time ever staying at a bed and breakfast, and based on what we experienced here, we've decided that anywhere we travel we will be staying at b&b's from now on! First of all, Mel and Angie's home is absolutely gorgeous! We stayed in the Nat King Cole suite, and it was everything I could have imagined and more! From the moment we walked into their house, we already knew we would be coming back a few times a year. The prices are more than reasonable, the hospitality is exceptional, and of course the Mel's breakfast is just amazing.

Four members of our family spent a blissful weekend and the Welcome inn manor soaking in the hospitality of Mell and Angie and savoring the comort and beauty of their property. Welcome Inn Manor was definitely a beautiful place. The architecture was amazing and the house itself looked like an art gallery. I loved the inn keepers, too. They can tell you a lot about Chicago. Breakfast was great. It is not located in downtown and the neighborhood looked a little shady. I was just a little surprised when I first arrived there, since nobody advised me in advance. Some taxi drivers might tell you not to stay in the neighborhood, so that they could make some more money and possibly some commission from hotels. I don't think you need to listen to them. Nothing unpleasant happened to me. I can't comment on anything about the public transportation around, since I have never walked to CTA stations since I had a car. Once you feel comfortable with the neighborhood, you should try. I don't know why, but wifi didn't work with my devices without any reasons and the inn keepers couldn't fix that. They just said it just randomly happens. Also, they need to update their brochures, especially prices for the additional services they provide.

Our part of the city is the newly ever-evolving Near South which is transforming and recognized as Chicago's best kept and hidden treasures- no traffic, limited meters and close to everything- and truly gentrifying similar to what is taking place in other renewed areas such as Renaissance Harlem, NYC. Our close proximity was apparently to your liking and we are so happy with that. We have had problems with our WIFI for some computers in our 1893 built home and have worked to fix it so that access is more consistent. Historic House and Wine Tours are extra which is sometimes misunderstood to be free or inclusive but unfortunately we must charge. Happy to know you may have enjoyed our free wine and unlimited hot beverages. We hope to see you again in the near future as we make improvements at our new inn. Thanks again!

Mell and Angie make this a wonderful place! The furniture and decor is sumptuous with interesting African and African-American art in all the rooms. The common areas invited relaxation in comfortable furniture and luxurious surroundings in this restored old home with beautiful woodwork. While it has only been open a year, it is a gem in the making. The meals were served in a lovely dining area and were delicious and different from the usual fare with local flavors and a wide variety of options. He took such care to cater to my vegetarian needs. Treat yourself to one of Mell's dinners in front of the fireplace! We loved hearing about the area and its history - wonderful conversations with hosts and guests alike. The quiet neighborhood may seem different from what you are used to, but don't miss this wonderful B&B. We felt welcomed and safe, and Mell takes care to be sure everyone is comfortable. Wonderful host, and the houses location makes for 10 minute access to the McCormick Center by car. House is inviting and unique, and it is interesting to see leader like Mel restore this area back to its prior glory. Mel and Angie have renewed this home in a totally unique fashion that respects the past but allows for those modern comforts that we love. If you stay, do let Mel make you a dinner. It was cold and rainy outside, but enjoyed a meal specifically designed for our preferences.....and it was quite a romantic evening as we were wined and dined adjacent to a wonderful fire!

We had the pleasure of staying at Mell & Angie's beautiful home while attending a trade show at McCormick Place. From the moment we arrived, Mell made us feel like family and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He graciously provided transportation each morning to the convention center for us. Their location is close to both bus and train so downtown is easily accessible. Their home is exquisite, so full of history and amazing art and our Lady D Suite was delightful. We were treated to a most delicious and bountiful breakfast each morning and our only regret was not having Mell prepare a dinner for us. Mel and Angie are gracious, helpful, and genuinely interesting folks. The combination of comfortable period furnishings (in a stunningly restored townhome) with African and African American art is unique and fun. The location worked very well for us- far enough from U Chicago to not be cloying and close enough to drive several times during the day. Also the EL is nearby and we were able to hop on (three and a half blocks) and get off within two blocks of the Art Institute and Chicago symphony. Mel cooks voluptuous meals and managed my food allergy with aplomb. It was a great introduction to Chicago!

The location of the Welcome Inn Manor is perfect for those visiting nearby IIT (or, in our case, Shimer College on the IIT campus!). It is removed from the chaos of campus, perched within a neighborhood that is full of history, not the least of which is its fame as the birthplace of blues! The innkeepers are open to sharing lore of the location and the historic home, and truly understand the delicate balance between being host and providing privacy to their guests. During our stay, we had periods of ducking in and out, which was very easy due to the convenient location. We also wanted recuperation time after moving college students into their apartments, and found restful hours in the various sitting rooms on the first floor. This was a perfect place to share with another couple also leaving their freshman college student behind, as we enjoyed relaxing "happy hours" recounting our day's adventure and planning the next over a few day period. Most remarkable was the astute referral from the Innkeeper to enable us to outfit our students' apartments from items salvaged from local high-end hotels--this allowed us to imbibe apartments with local lore and a quality that was unobtainable from (too distant!) Target stores. We wish to have stayed longer to enjoy the fabulous (apartment-sized) bathroom, where you don't have to bump into each other unless you intend to do so! We'll be back to take better advantage of the romance offered, when we don't have to recover aging bones from manual labor! Thanks, Mel!

My husband and I stayed at Welcome Inn Manor for a weekend while in town on a genealogy excursion. We like staying at bed and breakfasts both for the experience and because we believe in supporting local business owners. The Inn, a beautifully restored home decorated in a mix of both antique and modern furniture, is accented with an amazing collection of African/African-American art and collectibles. In contrast with our stays at other restored Victorian B&Bs, we felt quite comfortable lounging in the common areas, whether it was reading on the overstuffed chaise in the parlor or perusing dinner menus on the deck while sipping a glass of wine. The skillful blend of elegance and down home comfort at Welcome Inn Manor is easily attributed to owners Mell & Angie. Their gracious, warm manner and scrumptious breakfasts prepared by Mel, were accompanied by smaller touches, such as making sure there was hot water in the evening for our tea, or offering a glass of wine. Our only regret is that we would have liked to have time to explore the neighborhood or learn more about the Inn’s wonderful art and memorabilia collection. Perhaps next time.

We loved our room the food was wonderful. The bed and breakfast was great the place is not in down town Chicago so the five day stay free car service was amazing. Had we not had the car service we would have to call a cab the closest bus stop or train was about 5-6 blocks. A few of our friends were visiting Chicago for work/pleasure in May and stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor. Our friends invited us to come over to check out the Inn during their last night in Chicago, and we had a fantastic time! The owners were very friendly and welcoming, even though we were just friends of the guest. We enjoyed some wine in the main living room, complements of Mell, and had great conversation with our friends, Mell, and his wife. What wonderful get away! This was my first experience with a B&B and after this experience I believe it is the only way to go! Mell and Angie are delightful hosts, they went out of their way to ensure that we had everything that we needed to make our stay effortless. If we had a need they met it. The B&B was fabulous, we stayed in the Nat King Cole Suite, perfect for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway. The suite featured a firm King size bed with beautiful antique furniture that made you want to relax with a glass of wine (which flowed all weekend) and take it in. This suite also features an additional room which was converted into a bathroom. The bathroom features a sitting room where you could meditate in the morning or enjoy a good book. I have saved the best for the last, in the bathroom is a jacuzzi made for 2. The bathroom also boasts all the comforts of home perfumes lotions etc... The Welcome in is my new Chicago home away home, a place where you can definitely feel the peace and serenity of a quiet getaway or a exciting tour of the windy city!!! Leave the light on, I will be home soon!!!!!

We have been doing B&B for 20 plus years and very much enjoy the unknown factor when booking a stay. That is doubly so when a big city is the destination. My husband and I stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor while attending a college reunion nearby in Hyde Park. The rooms are very comfortable and quiet. The breakfast's are delicious. Mel and Angie were wonderful hosts. I ran every morning on Martin Luther King Drive.

Welcome Inn Manor is exceptional, and exquisite. The entire house, and grounds are beautiful. The room (it was really more like an apartment) that I stayed in -- The Nat King Cole Suite -- was amazing. Incredible furniture, really spacious, beautiful bed linens, super soft towels, the BEST shower... I didn't have to ask for anything, because everything was there. My favorite part, though, was the Nat King Cole CD already cued up in the CD player in the room, just waiting to be played. I turned it on while I was getting ready in the morning. It was lovely. Breakfast was great. Riding the EL into the Loop was easy, and fast. We were eager to learn, and Mell, the innkeeper, taught us so much about Chicago, and particularly the Manor's neighborhood. Then, he brought us to a great bike rental spot. We got a great deal on great bikes (ie: well-maintained bikes that didn't have a huge rental company logo plastered all over them) for the whole day. We cruised along the lake front, stopping for lunch and drinks. It was a wonderful day. So, so, so glad I didn't stay in a typical, touristy place downtown. Thanks, Mell. I stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor for a couple nights after a tough conference finished and I needed a little break. Mel was the perfect cure, friendly and helpful. The building is wonderful but it is the host that makes the difference! Will definitely come back with my wife next time in Chicago.

I've stayed at two B&B's in the past week. One met the usual standards of cleanliness, comfort and dining blah blah blah. The other was the Welcome Inn. Wow. In so many various ways, Mell and Angie's fabulous spot exceeded expectations. Hospitality is the first that comes to mind. My wife and I were made to feel so at ease, so at home. I was greeted by name when i stepped out of my car. We were offered a drink of wine upon arrival, a kind gesture that we appreciated after a long drive. We were given the run of the house. Mell regaled us with tales of the house, the neighbourhood and his hopes to made Bronzeville a fuller experience for travelers. The house itself is a showcase of lovely and intriguing art, from African masks to large colourful paintings. The hearty breakfasts were well beyond the call of duty. We felt that our innkeepers genuinely wanted us to enjoy Chicago and were concerned for our health and well-being (after my wife came down with a migraine). Overall, a lovely experience we were glad to have on our first visit to Chicago.

If you are looking for a romantic getaway that also offers access to great urban amenities and activities, you can't do better than the Welcome Inn Manor B&B in Chicago's historic Bronzeville Community. Visited Chicago to check out University of Chicago and found Welcome Inn Manor online. AND so glad we did. The online pictures are great and the actual accommodations are even better. The Nat King Cole bedroom and bathroom are Amazing. While the rooms were amazing, the service was the tops. Mell and Angie made us feel truly feel at home. Mell's breakfast were a treat each morning. The Nat King Cole Suite was spacious, the bed exceptional, and the linens luxurious. The Innkeeper's hospitality was gracious and very personable. We got the feeling that our needs and our comfort were at the top of his list. The directions here ask us to avoid hyperbole, but that is hard as this is such a special place. The Inn is absolutely gorgeous. The wood, the high ceilings, the spacious, carefully laid out rooms all create a feeling of peace and ease. I loved our suite so much I wanted to stay there and enjoy all the little nooks created for our pleasure. An Inn is made by the Innkeeper, and this Inn is a delightful find. We look forward to returning.

We had a great time staying at Welcome Inn Manor. It lived up to its name. We felt so welcome & like family. Mell & Angie are great. We recommend the weary traveler package. Mell introduced our taste buds to many wonderful delights & Angie’s brownies are to die for. The Welcome Inn Manor is located close to the museums and lake and walking distance to the train. Mell saved our day by leading the way to the museum when our plans changed at the aquarium. We couldn’t have had a better time. The house looks just like it does on the web site. We stayed in the Lady D Suite. Beautifully decorated and the bed was so comfy and yes, there was room for 3 with the air mattress on the floor. My husband suprised me with this beautiful place for our honeymoon! We arrived an hr earlier then expected, and Mel welcomed us in, gave us amazing tea, which I enjoyed all wknd! The food was, wow! Mel gave me some tips, which as a new wife where wonderful! Both my husband and I believed that we could litteraly live in the bed it was so soft! I loved the smell of the sheets! When my wife, my son and I pulled up to the Welcome Inn Manor the Innkeeper came outside to help us with our luggage and to welcome us. This set the tone for the entire stay. The Innkeeper, Mell, was always gracious and accommodating. He knows Bronzeville and Chicago and gives great suggestions for dining and entertainment. He is also a terrific conversationalist. He is a gregarious guy, who is quick with a story and fast to laugh. Arranging our trip with Mell was fast and easy. The house is a great historic home with wonderful vintage detail. If you want to know what it was like to live in a mansion built by the Chicago stockyard and railroad barons, this is the house to tour. The pictures show you just some of the wonderful details. We know for a fact we'll stay at the Welcome Inn Manor on our next trip to Chicago.

I treated my husband to an in-town get-away weekend for this birthday and we stayed the Welcome Inn Manor. To say our experience was fantastic is an understatement! Our home away from home was in The King Cole's Quarters. In our suite we had 2 Fireplaces, a Jacuzzi, a Massage Shower, and a Reading & Meditation Area. Every morning we were met with a hearty breakfast to start off our day. One evening, we were able to have our friends over for an exquisitely intimate dinner party in the Manor's first floor. We started in the living room, feasted in the dining room, and lounged in the family room. Our hosts prepared an extensive multicourse meal, we indulged in wonderful wine pairings, and enjoyed brilliant conversation with our friends. Our stay at the Manor made my husband's birthday a memorable event. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

This is our second stay at the Welcome Inn Manor. We feel like it is our home away from home in Chicago. We feel fortunate to have new friends like Mel and Angie. The other guests at the Bed and Breakfast have been very interesting and fun. The rooms, service, and value are unparalleled. And the breakfast is amazing -- after eating breakfast, we wait until dinner time to eat again the breakfast has been so satisfying. We use the Welcome Inn Manor as our operating base to explore Chicago and to see theatre. We can hardly wait until this summer to explore on bicycle and join Mel's bicycle tour. There are simply not enough words of praise for the Welcome Manor Inn or for Mel and Angie and the experience and experiences they share and help to create.

We picked this B&B for a special getaway between Christmas and New Year. The Inn was beautifully decorated for the holidays and had a warm feel. Mel and Angie made us feel right at home when arrived, by offering us tea. The rooms all had very interesting art and we spent time just looking at the unique pieces. The King Cole Suite was a treat with a huge whirlpool bath and fireplace. Breakfasts were an interesting mix of flavors, prepared by Mel. We were able to enjoy these in the dining room by the fire. Mel and Angie are exceptional Innkeepers; they know how to make you feel at home and pampered. They were helpful in recommending restaurants and sites to visit. Mel even took us to a local gallery, so that we could look at the masks we admired at the Inn. We would definitely come again as we feel that we have made new friends in Mel and Angie.

My wife and I spent a weekend at this large historical redstone tucked away in the historical Bronzeville neighborhood made famous for African American cultural art, music, wonderful brownstones, and good food. We were blown away walking in. The inn is filled with lovely paintings, sculptures, and furnishings. There is a chaise lounge for relaxing or entertaining, dining room with extensive wine rack, den with comfy leather sofas music and television, and a kitchen great for conversations with the owners and other guests. Upon checking in, house owner Mell Monroe had delicious split pea soup and hot tea prepared for us. Immediately we felt right at home. Mell was a great guide to the neighborhood and the city! Upstairs consists of two floors of rooms of varying size and theme of a different historical African American musician. We stayed in Nat King Cole Quarters, an incredibly spacious room. Cole’s music softly greeted us as we walked into the room. The bathroom is the size of most large hotel rooms with flat screen TV, jacuzzi, and a several sitting chairs in a sitting area. Our bed was comfortable enough to melt in. In our room was a lovely fireplace which Mell lit for us to enjoy a romantic evening. Upon waking, a delicious aroma filled the house for breakfast as we were treated to uniquely spiced chicken sausage, eggs, biscuits, and other continental breakfast delights. The Monroes made more than enough food, and made sure we were comfortable and any dietary needs were met. The next day's breakfast was even better than the day before and that was tough to beat. The Monroes are friendly, insightful, and are great guests! We will return soon in the spring to enjoy the lovely patio and yard accompanying the building for a down home barbeque hosted by the owner when the weather is warm! My wife and I live in the Chicago suburbs but we wanted to stay in the city for a romantic weekend. This was the perfect place to stay. We were minutes away from everywhere we wanted to go. Very convenient! Mell and Angie were excellent hosts and made us feel at home. My girlfriends and I hosted a Mystery Murder dinner party at the Manor Inn in November 2010 and it was an amazing experience. The atmosphere and ambiance of the Manor Inn set the tone for a relaxed, fun filled evening. We were treated like queens and seeing that most of them were mom's they needed to feel catered to and special as we enjoyed a party and our weekend stay. The dinner and breakfast was top notch. Angela and Mell, the owners of this B&B are warm, generous and deserve the name "welcome". The Welcome Inn Manor is a meticulously restored mansion in the Bronzeville area of Chicago. I stayed here while transitioning my daughter into college at the University of Chicago. When I turned up on Mell and Angie's doorstep a little weepy from moving my daughter into her dorm, they lead me to the kitchen, opened a bottle of wine and made me feel like I would always have a home away from home, close by my daughter. The suite I stayed in was opulent; from the cushy bedding, to the fireplace across from the jacuzzi tub. Next time, I am definitely bringing my husband. Mell made a huge breakfast each morning and filled me in on the amazing history of the neighborhood and of the man who built this gorgeous house. I am so glad I decided to be a little more adventurous and not settle for a cookie-cutter room in an over priced hotel. Staying at the Welcome Inn Manor was less expensive, more enjoyable and by far more personal than I could have found anywhere else.

What a different experience than a "hotel room." The ambiance was relaxing. This place had art, antiques, and modern amenitites..There were so many areas to unwind; the living room, the tv room, not to mention the bathroom, which consisted of a fireplace, whirlpool tub, shower with 4 jets, a sitting area with music and a tv. Highly recommend it.

Everything about this cozy little Inn exudes warmth and the love of family. This past weekend our family & friends came together for a surprise engagement party. My niece had no idea it was coming and with the help of Mell, the Inn Keeper my niece's now fiance was able to plan this event bring together his family from St. Louis and her parents and friends in Chicago. The Inn Keeper went so far as to take down the signage in the vestibule so his home blended with the stately homes in the area (she assumed he was visiting a colleague ). After offering the couple coffee and cake Mell stepped out of the parlor allowing the proposal to take place in private. Within minutes we all heard the curdling shrill when the top was lifted from the cake plate. From there a wonderful evening took place. The food was great, the champagne was flowing and through out the Inn a warming blaze roared from the 6 fireplaces about the home. Out of state families getting to meet for the first time not across an isle but in a lovely cozy setting. It was a beautiful reminder of love and being in love. The Inn Keeper prepared all the suites with flowers, chocolate, and chilled wine. The happy couple along with their mentors stayed overnight to savor the enchanted evening. Mell (the Inn Keeper) along with the couple invited the parents and grandmother back the next morning for breakfast with the happy couple. NOW THAT'S SERVICE WITH A HEART & SMILE
