Thoughtful

4.2 on December 08, 2014

The cottage does not have heat but the owner had the dehumifider on all day before our arrival so it wasn't that cold. When I told her we were from Kona (hot)and wimpy about the cold she gave us sweats to wear - very thoughtful.

Happiness Found

5 on November 07, 2014

We were planning on staying at the Volcano House, but their website was hard to find. What came up in our search was a number of B&B's. we Chose Aloha Happy Place and we are glad we did. We spent three nights there and had a great time. The room was comfortable and spacious. Continental Breakfast came with the room, lots of fresh fruit, homemade breads, coffee, juice and cereal. Joan, the owner was there every morning to greet us and make sure everything was OK. She also grows her own fruit and vegetables as well as raising chickens goats and sheep on her farm, we got a tour of the farm and learned a lot about her self sustaining farm. The rooms were clean and well maintained. The Inn also had a very comfortable library/sitting room where you could go and relax after dinner or after coming back from a hike. WiFi worked great and was free! All in all a great place to stay, only a couple of miles from the park entrance. Would definitely recomend this as a great place to stay.

A wonderful down home place to stay!

4.6 on September 02, 2014

The house was so charming and warm from years of love and sense of family. Our room was decorated beautifully with everything we needed to be entirely comfortable...including fresh gardenias in the hallway to welcome us. I felt lucky to have been able to experience this wonderful place!

our 4th visit!

3.2 on September 02, 2014

We have stayed at this "Happy Place" 4 years in a row. It's clean, quiet and very charming. Our room has always been a welcome place to end a day of sight seeing. This year we brought our daughter, son-in-law and grandson (9 years). They really enjoyed the experience. If you want a unique place that's off the beaten path to rest your head, this is for you. If you like a lot of fanfare, then this is not your place. Aloha, Mike&Becky P.S. this in doesnt offer food service. It wasn't unsatisfactory,.......the website doesn't let us skip the rating for dining.

A special stay on a hurricane day :-)

2.6 on August 13, 2014

Our stay had been hectic but nothing to do with the lovely lady who's running the place. By run of fate we landed in big island on the day hurricane Iselle made a landfall near Hilo ... So we couldn't drive to volcano that night and when we finally made it to the place we spent the night with no power :-) In this kind of unique situation our nice host was still able to welcome us quite nicely (though she didn't sleep much that previous night) and our stay has been quite romantic with candles and oil lamps for lighting. A special thought to the Thai restaurant closeby : really nice Thai food and people and the only piece of hope in Volcano during these post Iselle days without power. Regardless the happy place was nice given the situation and our nice host was gentle enough to reimburse us 50% of the first night where we couldn't make it due to the storm which was a fair deal considering the situation. So if you can avoid arriving on a hurricane day (which is quite likely) this is certainly a very nice place to stay :-)

Sunny and comfortable double room, quant farmhouse!

4.0 on July 03, 2014

My daughter and I loved our stay here. The room had two double beds and lots of windows in the corner room and bathroom with a farm view. We were very happy that coats and umbrella's were provided as it was raining when we arrived at the park. When we got home that evening, there was lots of firewood and kindling and cardboard stacked generously for us to have a fire. The had a stereo near the fireplace and we warmed up on the big couch with good music (large selection of CD's) and a warm fire. We had the entire house to ourselves. The next day Joan let us check out late and when we got back from our long hike, we sat at the big dining room table and made our lunch. We felt at home and liked the warm smile Joan welcomed upon arrival, she left a note that she was working in the back, then came in to make sure we found everything OK and see if we needed anything. I would stay here again and my daughter would also. We liked the farm sounds, especially the goats! Great value for the room that we stayed in!!! Very close to the park and the location made things so easy for a 24 hour visit to the volcano! Wish we could have stayed longer! It was my birthday and it was a perfect trip!

Musty and allergy-inspiring—good location though

2.4 on January 22, 2014

Wasn't expecting a LOT but there are some things you need to expect. First of all, Volcano is a very moist environment, and the house/rooms are poorly sealed. You'll notice the musty smell as soon as you walk in the door, and it doesn't get better in your room. My allergies were going nuts the whole time—sneezing and snuffling and keeping the girlfriend up with snores (I don't usually snore!). Second, the house is right next to a farm, which sounds charming until the roosters pop off at 3 am, 4am, 5am, and 6 am. And if it isn't the roosters, it's the cat meowing loudly, the dog next door yelping, or the donkey (yep, the donkey) braying loudly enough to wake you up. Bring earplugs and allergy medicine! All this said, the location is excellent—it's a great launching off point for explorations of Kilauea. Assigned a dining score of 'Met my Expectations' as there is no dining available at the house.

Innkeeper Response
Yes you are correct, it is damp here with an average of 300+ inches of rain per year- this is after all a rainforest. Hence, expect damp humid conditions and cooler temperatures due to an elevation of 4,000'. This is precisely why each accommodation is equipped with a dehumidifier as well as in the common areas. The house dates back to 1898, yes that's right, it is one of the oldest remaining structures in Volcano rare and filled with history. So therefore, it is not sealed like a vacuum. As far as your allergies go did you not prepare for the fact that there is a volcano about three miles away as a crow flies which leaches all sorts of gas and other debris into the air? More than likely the source for your allergy attack. On days when the VOG is bad most folks living here do not even go outside. Therefore, had you taken this into consideration you would have packed those much needed meds for your condition. And yes, this is a farmstay, so you should have expected farm animal noise. No, we have no donkeys, but we do have 6 horses and offer horseback riding. When traveling its always a good idea to have ear plugs especially when you stay at the luxuriant hotels and have to listen to the elevators "ding" all night long through the air conditioning ducts. Hope this has been helpful to you as well as for other guests.
