4.0 out of 5Hearty Welcome at the Hale Makamae
January 20, 2010
Booking on very short notice, I did get a room at the Hale Makamae and also leaving early morning for a boat trip, I was welcome nonetheless. And even after a very late return from my boat trip, breakfast was still waiting for me. Thank you very much I felt like at home and enjoyed staying with you. I will certainly recommend your B&B to everyone that travels in your direction! Mahalo, Nicole

My husband and I finally took our honeymoon after 11 years of marriage. When searching for hotels in Hilo, HI we were very disappointed. All the hotels offered looked dirty, and not exciting. I searched for a bed and breakfast and Hale Makamae was the first to show up. So I checked it out. I was VERY impressed with the pictures, and the prices and reserved our room right away. When we arrived it was very late (after 10pm) and we were still greeted by Petra, a wonderful hostess!, and showed our room, wished aloha and off to bed! Our room was exactly as promised, and even better than I had hoped! It was very clean and even though I wasn't very excited about not having a tv...it was exactly what we needed to unwind and relax! We awoke to the smell of banana pancakes and fruit I have only heard of! After an amazing breakfast, Petra sat down and had coffee with us and took out the maps and showed us some amazing places! I would highly recommend this place to anyone! It was the perfect vacation!

We stayed at this place for 3 nights and we very happy to stay here. It is a good base for the whole east coast but even better if you want to make the lavaboat tour as the meting point is only 2 minutes away (if you are on the island do that tour, it is worth the money. You will never get so close to the lava). Petra and John really made it a more the wonderful stay for us. They told us where to go and what to do, and as we ran short of fresh clothing they even let us use the washer and dryer. The breakfast was stunning. Every day something new: French toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs. But every day fresh papayas, Kiwis, bananas, bread, jam, cereals. The perfect start for the day. We had the Lanai suite with a full equipped kitchen, 2 Bedrooms and a living room. Everything was spotless clean and very nice decorated. We also had an outside look at the other rooms and they also seemed very nice. We didn't use the garden at all, because we were around the island the whole day, but it is really huge and very nice arranged. If we come back we will definitely stay again at the Hale Makamae.

I just finished staying at Hale Makamae for 9 days. I have stayed here several times, and I absolutely love it there. John & Petra and very gracious hosts, so knowledgeable about the area, and wonderful people. I love to stay at B&B's and this is my favorite, the rooms are always perfect, clean and have everything I need. The grounds are a special place where I can meditate, sit and read a book, sip some tea, and completely relax. The amazing variety of plants, flowers and trees on the huge property enhance the experience. The breakfast is fantastic, given Petra's European background it is not surprising to see that influence in the breakfast. Fresh fruits, breads, preserves, cheese, cereal, eggs, juice, coffee, and tea. Breakfast is a feast that prepares you for a fun filled day out enjoying the island sights. It is located in perfect proximity to all the beautiful places that I love to explore. I will surely stay again in the future, and highly recommend this B&B! Ron Hughes (Photographic Artist)

5 out of 5Wonderful Place in Paradise
July 14, 2009
We stayed at Hale Makamae Bed & Breakfast for three nights in the large Lanai Suite. It is a full apartment with kitchen and two bedrooms. The kitchen is well equipped and provides all you need. The rooms and in fact the whole house is decorated with beautiful orchids. The breakfasts were wonderful and we so much enjoyed the tropical botanical gardens. This B&B is the perfect location to explore the Puna coast line, the Volcanoes National Park, the Lava flow, hot ponds, Kapoho Snorkeling Tidepools and to take a boat trip out to the lava flow. We loved it and will be back.
4.2 out of 5Home Away from Home
July 12, 2009
The Hale Makamae is a lovely 'home away from home' in a delightfully beautfiul garden setting. It is close to Pahoa and Hilo and shopping . Petra'a breakfasts were outstanding. A very relaxing place to unwind after a busy day of touring volcanoes and beaches!
4.6 out of 5Great Breakfasts, Great Location
July 11, 2009
In May 2009, my husband and I and two friends stayed at the Hale Makamae, occupying the Lanai Suite on the second floor and the Garden Suite on the first floor. Both units contained every amenity we could want. We ate a few breakfasts there at 8:00 a.m., but missed three of them due to needing to leave before 6:00 a.m. for particular activities. Petra’s pancakes were the best, but there were many other things to eat, including eggs, cereals, muffins, rolls, and local fruits. We also prepared three dinners at the B&B and the units contained all that was needed to make a meal. The grounds are large and kept beautiful with numerous native plants and coconut palm trees. Each unit has several bookshelves with books and literature regarding the Big Island. Most of our activities took place around the Hilo side of the island and the Hale Makamae in Pahoa was situated amidst everything that we did, which included Volcanoes National Park, hiking Kilauea Iki, a helicopter flight over the volcano and along the coast where it enters the ocean, botanical gardens, and other hikes, including South Point to the green sand beach. Petra was a wealth of information and from her suggestion we did a hike up Mauna Ulu with a native Hawaiian.
5 out of 5Enchanting place, eveything just right. Wonderful host and great value!
May 22, 2009
We stayed wonderful, restful two nights at Hale in May. Surrounded by 2 acres of enchanting garden full of palms, fruit trees, flowers and birds, the inn offers incredible serenity and comfort. Our one bedroom suite was very comfortable and clean. Fresh fluffy towels in the bathroom, accoutrements in the kitchen (a full size fridge too), and a wall shelf stocked with books in the living room. The inn is located on a quite residential street and a short distance from black beach, volcano (you can watch the plume of volcanic smoke and steam arise from a distance from a lava bluff just 7 min. from the inn), hot pond (a natural pool of warm salt water heated by the volcanic vents) fantastic snorkeling at the marine reserve, and the town of Pahoa. The innkeepers, Petra and her husband was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us some great suggestions. They even lent us local map and flappers (mine had a broken strap). Everyday, breakfast was something to look forward to. Large plates of beautifully cut fresh local fruit (it’s Hawaii so fantastic array of exotic fruits), German pancakes and eggs. The only complain I had is that the coffee wasn’t strong enough for me. (Petra, please make a strong cup of coffee for me next time!) Everyday, we had a great breakfast, a full day of activities and came back for a restful evening of reading while listening to the symphony of tree frogs. It was quite an enchanting experience.
