I was fully satisfied with my stay at Art & Orchids. The hosts were friendly and obliging. I have no problems recommending this place to others

My wife and I stayed in the lower rooms. Rooms were enormous, bed was great, and the hot tub was wonderful! Marklyn made the best breakfasts I've ever eaten in any B & B. This B & B is off the beaten path, but well worth booking and driving to. Her driving instructions were spot on. It is private, roomy, and quiet. The grounds are lush and tropical. We will ONLY stay here when we are in Hilo again.

Our stay at A&O was excellent. We stayed in the Orchid room for three nights. The room was modestly sized - exactly as advertised - clean and airy. Breakfast was very good, and they accommodated my dietary needs without a problem. The common area is particularly lovely, and a great place to spend a few hours reading if the weather is incliment. We don't really have anything negative to say about A&O. Ensure you have a copy of the directions that the hosts provide, as it is (or it seems, anyways) a rather long ways from the highway and it would be easy to get lost. It would have been nice to have an easy mechanism dry some of our wet clothes (it rained for much of our visit and in general it is rather humid down there), though to be fair, we didn't ask. We would gladly stay there again, and highly recommend it.

We had a fantastic stay at at Art and Orchids and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great off-the beaten-path gem of a hideaway. Our room was clean and comfortable and the breakfasts were top notch. Markie and Jerry are great hosts and really helped us plan the best day trips of our stay. We'll definitely recommend this place to anyone traveling to the Big Island.

My son Lance and I were absolutely thrilled with everything at Art and Orchids! A very private place in a luxurious setting, we could relax in a homey atmosphere. The owners are considerate and knowledgeable of the locality. we shall certainly come again to this unique place!

Markie was very warm and welcoming, and the property felt like a home away from home! We loved how she shared a multitude of tropical fruits fresh from the garden for breakfast! She also made us an amazing boxed breakfast to go for our early departure. Rooms were clean and place is easily accessible by rental car and the provided directions. Lots of rainforest sounds at night that added a little something special to our stay. Thank you for a wonderful time!! :)

We absolutely loved our stay at Art & Orchids. The room and common space were beautiful, clean, airy and open. The tile work they have done is wonderful-- it felt like there were little surprises and gifts left for us to discover all around. The furnishings were also original, comfortable and beautiful, especially the wood used. My daughter loved the pool, especially the waterfall and the little cat foot prints on the bottom. Markie was a warm and thoughtful host, as well as a very good cook and an outstanding gardener. We couldn't believe the gorgeous flowers and plants-- paradise couldn't be any more beautiful. We appreciated all the outdoor equipment they had laid out for guests to use. Loved it.

We stayed in the Rainbow Room. It was as spacious as it appears in the photo, which was a relief considering the angling photographers do these days. The breakfast was what I expected, simple and sweet. Markie was very attentive. She assisted us with maps, top spots to see, breakfast on the go and was all around an awesome hostess. The only disappointment was no A/C.

We had a fantastic stay. Very nice B&B. The rooms and garden is outstanding. Nice pool and hot tub. Highly recommended.

We couldn't have picked a better place to stay for our "once in a lifetime" trip to the Big Island. From the extraordinary setting in a tropical rain forest wonderland to our hosts' unceasing attention to every detail we were able to experience all that Hawai'i has to offer and then some. Markie and Jerry clearly put their heart and soul into Art and Orchids...and we were truly benefiting form that.

The room was very comfortable, nicely furnished and good size. The breakfasts were really good. The grounds are beautiful filled with edible food. The owners are very nice and helpful. Loved it!

We stayed two nights here. The property is gorgeous and the hosts are extremely welcoming; the room was very comfortable! Among other items, after our prior 10 days in hotels and condo/resorts, it was a pleasure to encounter a room with adequate lighting for reading! And it was truly a pleasure to swim and lounge around the pool, listening to the forest around us. We were supplied with a wonderful restaurant recommendation for dinner and with excellent directions and a box breakfast to get back to the Kona airport (our flight had been advanced by an hour and a half!) our last morning. I would recommend Art and Orchids for anyone who wants something a little off the beaten track and out of the ordinary, but wants comfortable and beautiful surroundings. I certainly would go back anytime I visit the Big Island!

Of the 3 places we stayed during our Hawaii vacation this was our favorite. We stayed for 3 days during May. It is a good central location for visiting Volcano Park and the Hilo/Puna area. We loved the snorkeling at the nearby tidepools, and the snorkeling gear we borrowed was better than what we later rented from Snorkel Bob's. Breakfast was great, and the hosts were helpful and friendly without being intrusive - perfect balance. We stayed in the garden room which was big and had a nice tub. I only wish we had more time to enjoy the grounds and the pool - it all looked inviting. :)

True, from the photos & info on the website Art & Orchids seemed perfect for us, but it really was beyond our expectations. We stayed 8 nights in the Rainbow Room, which was light & airy, as was the lovely, comfortable common area. One truly is surrounded by art & orchids; the photos don't do it justice. Markey & Jerry have thought of everything a traveler could need/want; they're both very friendly & helpful, & know the area well. We enjoyed the company of other guests so much that it was difficult to leave the lanai after breakfast (which was always excellent,too). Rosie & David, California May, 2011

Renewed friendship with Jerry and Markie and 2 guests we met last year. We were there to watch the annual Merrie Monarch Festival; every morning we had lively discussions of competition, including the hosts. They share aspects of life in Puna and recommend good restaurants and sightseeing that is enjoyable. Breakfasts are very good: fresh fruit from their garden or farmer's market, granola, egg dish and meat, sweet bread and whole grain breads. What a lovely place, hidden but good to find with the hosts' detailed description via email. Very friendly hosts, both gave us useful hints what to see and do. Pahoa is 15 mins drive away and offers some neat places to dine. Fantastic breakfast with homemade granola and varying fruits freshly picked from the lush garden. Tree frogs concert at night. Room was just fine, too. We can recommend the place!

My husband was sure that we were too far "out in the booneys" to be on the right road when we were headed to Art & Orchids. However, the directions were correct, and after we got there we realized it wasn't so far away after all. So don't be dissuaded- it is a gem of a place! The morning breakfast was fabulous, the owners delightful, and we totally enjoyed the other folks there. The flowers and gardens, even in mid-winter were lovely. The accomodations were spacious, clean, comfortable, and nicely appointed.

Beautiful location and jungle experience with interesting bird and tree frog serenade at night. Extremely friendly and helpful hosts. I would highly recommend this eco-friendly B&B.

Anyone who enjoys being pampered in the hawaiian outdoors with a great location, pool, and breakfast will enjoy the hospitality of Art and Orchids. The locals (maccaws, frogs and wild pigs) can be a bit noisy however we enjoyed the saranade!! Markie and Jerry were excellent hosts and provided good advice regarding restaurants, sites and the local markets.

we just LOVED the place this was our first bed and breakfast experience & we just loved it the room was nice,clean,spacious and very artistically decorated. the common dining area has beautiful pieces of art that give the place a very artistic & homely touch the backyard has a ton of plants and trees . we even got to taste the frits from the trees from the backyard the hosts were extremely nice, helpful and accomodating would highly recommend this place to anyone

We loved this place! Markie has beautiful artwork in every room, as well as showing pieces by other local artists - this makes every space distinctive and interesting. Everything is green surrounding the house, and they have planted orchids and a wide variety of fruit and flowering trees throughout. Jerry has set up a lot of alternative and energy saving devices, and gave us a tour of thr grounds our first day. Best of all, Markie gave our kids an art lesson and we returned home with beautiful papers they had made. It was comfortable, they are both very welcoming, and it made a wonderful and relaxing base for our stay. We were all sorry to leave.

It's a bit off the beaten path, but our stay was definitely worthwhile. The rooms have a nice, local homey feel. There's a relaxing common area with books, videos and games. Marky provides a delicious breakfast to start the morning off. Be sure to get a tour of their backyard where Jerry did an incredible job building it. Our only regret is we couldn't spend more time at Art and Orchids.

We stayed in the Garden Room. Spacious and clean with tv and wifi. Great place to stay! Marklyn and Jerry made a special effort for Thanksgiving breakfast with pancakes and fried bananas along with the usual fresh fruits and breads. It is a comfortable, clean and peaceful location.

October 2010 We arrived after dark and were warmly greated by Markie and her husband, Jerry. The frogs were singing their night serenade and it felt very lush and tropical. The bedroom was welcoming and there was nice attention to small details. There is a very nice enclosed deck where we ate breakfasts. Markie prepared wonderful breakfasts with local tropical fruits picked from her garden. It was nice having wi-fi available to check email and make trip plans. We enjoyed our stay very much and hope to return for another visit in the future. Dave and Deborah Sandy, OR

Very welcoming environment. Perfect for a weekend getaway or a little romance. Very nice host with lots of funny stories to tell. Would stay there again without a doubt! Five star.

Awaken in your well-furnished, attractive room to screeching birds and a breakfast of tropical fruits grown right on the premises. Art and Orchids is an interesting and beautiful place like none other I've visited, from the rooms decorated with Markie's and Jerry's own art work to the vast array of jungle plant life and agricultural projects they work on there. And they are wonderful hosts. I plan on returning as soon as I can get time off work.

We stayed at Art and ORchids two nights at the end of a 10-day trip to the Big Island in August (2009). After arriving on the first night my wife and I had planned to go out to dinner. However, after relaxing in the family room for an hour or so, we realized we were just too tired to go out. A bit later, Markey came up and and surprised us with two plates of spaghetti. It really hit the spot and epitomized the thoughtfulness that Markey and Jerry have put into every aspect of how they run Art and Orchids. The room, the common space, the kitchen were all great. The breakfast was wonderful. We highly recommend the granola and fresh fruit. All-in-all, this was a wonderful and relaxing way to end our trip.

The rooms were all decorated nicely and the work of local artists were on display. There were many extras that I enjoyed such as the closet with games, and beach towels you could borrow. The days when we went to the beach we could borrow pool noodles, beach chairs, snorkels, sunscreen, bug spray, beach mats and a few other items. The guide books and local history books were a great help in locating different sites as we were driving around. The breakfast were bountiful and a variety of items were available. There was local fruit and hard boiled eggs, homemade granola, some great local sweet bread, toast, and other items. The foods I mention are the ones I enjoyed the most but there were more available. The B&B is located in a lush rainforest area with many beautiful plants giving it a private hideaway feeling. Jerry and Marky were very helpful to us offering all kinds of information on what places we might be interested in visiting and the local events that were happening while we were there. They listened to all the guests and offered information that was helpful to each person based on their interests. They were a real help to us with all the information they had on local events and contacts for us in the area for business needs. We have stayed as many different types of accomodations in Hawaii including hotels and hostels but this was our first bed and breakfast stay. The value of the stay, the hospitality and the accomodations all were much better than any other place we had stayed in so far.

We stayed there for 3 nights from Dec. 15 - 18 and truly enjoyed it. Markie and Jerry thought of every single details their guests need, they were great hosts and made you feel so much at home. Breakfast was delicious.

There is wonderful art and wild orchids and tall tropical trees around this 2-story, 3 guest room house. Markie and Jerry, hostesses and host are hospitable, helpful, and supply things that condos don't

Stayed for a few nights and found the location perfect, the hospitality outstanding, the food was fresh and delicious and the room was comfortable and clean. Highly recommended.

We had a short 2 day stay at the smallest Orchid room. Marklyn the owner waited up for our late arrival and showed us to the cutest little room on the second floor with art that she created herself. The breakfast was delicious and their thoughtfulness was in every little detail for the guests. From guide books, beach towels to snorkel gear for the guests to use. We loved it!

Couldn't be any better! I always stay here when visiting the islands.

This b&b is a hidden gem a short distance outside of Hilo on the Big Island. Marklyn Wilson and Jerry Gardner (the owners) go out of their way to ensure that all guests have a memorable stay, whether you wish to swim, see the volcano, eat out, whatever. We would strongly recommend this b&b to couples, small groups and families.

Art & Orchids combines a hidden rainforest retreat with easy access to the glories of the Big Island’s windward coast. Great breakfasts, wonderful hosts!

Wonderful owners, great breakfasts that include produce grown on property, free –range eggs, and freshly baked goods. Pleasant rooms with beautiful gardens on property.

Loved the room, the grounds, the neighborhood, the yummy home-grown food and coffee, the cleanliness, the TV & DVD library, the rainforest atmosphere and the innkeepers, Markie and Jerry. Highly recommend!
