Originally built in 1850 as a boulangerie, Le V is a two story traditional Medocaine stone house located in the heart of the Medoc vineyards approximately 38 miles north of the city of Bordeaux. The three bedrooms on the upper level, each uniquely decorated with French antiques, have views of the nearby 12th century abbey and church. Le V is also a creperie open six days a week offering traditional savory and sweet crepes for lunch and dinner.

    Comfortable, clean, friendly, quiet; fantastic!

    May 17, 2011

Bernard is an excellent host. He is knowledgeable about the area, local wines and food. He is friendly and talkative and enjoys running le V--and it shows in all the details. The rooms were recently updated, nicely furnished with fine antiques, and clean and comfortable. The creperie is a nice choice for a calm and delicious dinner. Vertheuil is a pleasant and peaceful village, and a short country drive from the wine center of Pauillac. We stayed five nights and only wished it was longer. We hope to return!

Bernard is the consummate innkeeper. He is gracious, welcoming, funny, and tells terrific stories with great humor! Prior to our arrival he suggested a few wineries we might visit on the drive from Bordeaux, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We arrived late afternoon and first walked across the street to admire the 12th century abbey. It's beautiful. We took another short drive to the beach (and to photograph another old cathedral) before returning to Le V to enjoy Bernard's dinner of crepes...La Forestiere with ham, cheese, and mushrooms is wonderful, and don't overlook the Chevre for your second. So good. And for dessert? La Poire Belle Helene. Yum. Our room was spacious and immaculate. We got up early and strolled about the village before returning for breakfast. The French sure know how to bake bread! Throughout the rest of our stay in the Dordogne region, we kept saying how we wished we could return to see Bernard and enjoy another night of his hospitality. The village is quiet and quaint, the surrounding environs quite beautiful, and you won't be disappointed.
