Near the edge of a Provence in Southern France, the small stone village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard (pop. 2100) has quarries that were the source of the stone for the famous Roman bridge-- the Pont Du Gard (the ninth wonder of the world, built 2000 years ago) which is a 40 minute walk away. Ask about guided hikes with Martin (free!) to the Pont du Gard. Bikes are available to ride to the river to swim or canoe or visit the nearby villages. Arles (where Van Gogh did his most famous work) is a 45 minute drive away. See the summer sunflowers in bloom on the way. Did you know the Pope resided in Avignon for 70 years? Visit the luxurious Palace of the Popes. Gordes-- the suspended village overlooking Provence-- is nearby. You could go to Chateauneuf de Pape, the winery of the Popes, to find world-class wine. How about visiting the Roman stadium in Nimes? 30 minutes by car.
