  • This is the front of the house that faces into the village, the rear of the property looks out onto rural vistas and is very private. There is plenty of room for parking beside the house.
    The large outdoor swimming pool has a large sunbathing area, has an open outlook over fields and up the valley. It is securely fenced with lockable gate, and only accessible to guests of Domaine Thomson.
    The entrance hallway is spacious, cool and welcoming. Leading either upstairs, or into the dining room and outside onto the rear south facing terrace, and garden.
    The dining room is beautiful. The banquet table is a marvellous setting for dinner, and in the winter months breakfast is served here, in spring and summer, breakfast is eaten outside on the terrace.
    This double/twin ensuite bedroom overlooks the front of the property towards the village. There are two double ensuite bedroooms, each containing one double bed and one single bed. Coffee/tea making facilities, & hairdryer are supplied with each room.
    This is the view from the double/twin ensuite room looking out of the rear of the property. This section of garden is flat lawn ideal for sitting out and relaxing, or playing with children safely. Fields border the garden as can be seen in this early springtime picture.
    The large open fireplace in the sitting room is a central feature to the room, in winter a roaring fire makes it the natural room to relax in.
    This is the view of the back of the property, which is south facing, a great area to relax outdoors. There is plenty of space to spread out, to read, to play games. In high summer there are shady areas to have a siesta in.
    Here, the owner Sarah Thomson who will give you a warm welcome, stands at the top of her field which in spring-time (May and June)is a mass of wild orchids in flower.
    This stunning view looks down upon Engravies, and illustrates the type of landscape the foothills of the Pyrenees really is. This photo is just a short, and not difficult, walk from the guesthouse.

    Situated on the edge of a small village in the Ariege region of the Pyrenees, a 15 minute drive from Mirepoix, ville Cathar, and 1 hours` drive from Carcassonne & Toulouse. It is a great place to `get away from it all`, without being too `far from the madding crowd. Comfortable rooms,space indoors and out,to swim & relax. Many activities in the area, noted for its wildlife, wild flowers and natural beauty, from walking, cycling, horseriding, skiing, visiting Cathar Castles, caves of the Pyrénées, browsing in colourful bustling markets held in local towns, sampling locally produced wines

      From Carcassonne airport- At moderate speed this total journey takes about one hour to my Domaine.- On leaving Carcassonne airport (Salveza) turn right.- Follow directions for Montreal.- This takes you away immediately from Carcassonne. Through typically French countryside. Continue.- After Montreal head towards Fanjeaux, and then Mirepoix. This is the most beautiful and scenic drive. Don`t go too fast. Appreciate the scenery as each new view unfolds before you. Don`t be in a hurry.- From Mirepoix follow directions towards Pamiers.- This road passes through several villages; Besset, Coutens, Tourtrol, Rieucros.- After Rieucros turn left following signs for Vira and Dun. Pass through Vira and about 2 miles further turn right signposted Engravies. - Enter village of Engravies over bridge, reduce speed to dead slow(remember you are entering a time warp) continue 100meters turn left at house with green shutters. This narrow lane leads to Domain Thomson.

    • Toulouse, France (TLS-Blagnac) 50 miles

    • Directions to property:
      - This route to Domaine Thomson takes about one hour and a quarter travelling at moderate speed.- On leaving the airport follow signs for Toulouse, then once onto the main road (Periferique) follow signs for Montpelier.- Continue along the Periferique, don`t be alarmed if for a while there are no signs for Montpelier, just continue.- At the start of the Autoroute for Montpelier, Carcassonne, and Barcelona, it is also sign-posted to Foix and Andorra. You need to take a ticket, it is a fee paying motorway, then when you leave you pay. - After going along this for some kilometres you branch off the autoroute following the signs for Pamiers, Foix, and Andorra.- Continue until Pamiers. On the way you pass an interesting windmill – very much in style of Don Quixote – it has six sails.- At end of autoroute place ticket into machine. It will cost Euros 4.40 or Euros 5 depending on time of day.- From here you are looking for signs for Mirepoix.- Continue till second exit for Pamiers. You will pass a commercial estate with a giant Carrefour (supermarche) clearly visible from the carriageway. Take this exit sign-posted for Mirepoix. It is a tight turn.- At roundabout take first exit direction Mirepoix.-Continue and pass through Les Pujols.- Take the second sign on the right after this to Vira and Dun. This comes very quickly after a turn-off towards Les Issards.- Follow road through Vira and continue 2 miles.- Turn right direction Engravies.- Enter Engravies over bridge and reduce speed to dead slow (remember you are entering a time warp).- Continue 100 meters and at house with green shutters turn left at narrow lane. This leads to guesthouse.

    A slice of summer
    A slice of summer, is a dish I have fallen into doing, where I prepare different vegetables in layers in a dish, the flavours are retained, and it is always popular. I always cook using homegrown vegetables. And locally sourced meats. I also use a lot of fish. I present my meals in the french style, and if people have special dietary needs, I take great care to cater imaginatively for them.
