Lodging at The Lord Fairfax Country House is the closest thing that one can do to experience the elegance and comfort of Eighteenth Century Virginia life without also enduring the privations and pestilence of those times. Although The Lord Fairfax house dates to the 1730s, it has been restored so as to preserve all of the original features while unobtrusively incorporating insulation, heating, cooling, electricity and plumbing...no chamber pot is required here! The Inn is located in the rolling hills of hunt country and is impeccably and comfortably furnished with exquisite taste. The hospitality of the Innkeeper is gracious and thoughtful without being intrusive, and no detail is left unattended. After only a few days, we felt as though we had travelled to a gracious and tranquil place far away in time. I recommend it without reservation (but, you should make a reservation).

I generally do not like B&Bs. The reason - forced interaction with other guests. No problem here. You are the only guests. Walking into a log house may raise a red flag, but the facade gives way to an elegant 18th century interior. The spacious living room and dining room share a fireplace. The lighting throughout is low and adds to the authenticity of the period. At the same time everything is formal, it is also comfortable and immaculate. The spacious bedroom upstairs has a huge king size bed. We were greeted by the proprietor, who immediately offered us a glass of wine. Since we know the area well, our conversation was mainly about how she could help make it most comfortable for us. Since our purpose for being there meant early morning departures, Carolyn Smith provided us with perfect breakfasts on each of the four mornings we were there. Our only regret was we did not get to use the fireplace because it was really too warm and by the time we returned each evening, we were too tired. I highly recommend this property. And, we plan to return on our annual visits to the area.

This private, but very charming bed and breakfast country house made for an unforgettable experience in the heart of horse country. I truly enjoyed my overnight stay at the Lord Fairfax, complete with cocktail hour and a hearty breakfast. The innkeeper is one of the most kind and thoughtful around, and made my stay even more remarkable by providing me information on nearby shopping and dining. This would make for a very romantic getaway in the future as well.

I was very pleased and thrilled with how romantic and intimate the Lord Fairfax House is. It is a wonderful log house attached to the innkeepers home, but it has its own private entrance so it always felt like our own place. The interior decor is just the right combination of country elegance and casual comfort. Truly one of the nicest, and most private, weekend getaways I have ever enjoyed. Middleburg and the surounding countryside offer so much this time of year. Coming home to relax at the log house was the perfect compliment to a wondeful day of shopping and touring. I look forward to visiting again - hopefully when there is snow on the ground! Charles H

4,8 out of 5Unique Colonial Country Estate

A friend and I wanted to stay at The Lord Fairfax Country House because it's unique -- an historic 18th century log cabin with all modern conveniences in the heart of Virginia's horse country and vinyards. The impressive estate and its gracious, attentive hostess/owner, Carolyn Smith, exceeded our high expectations. We were struck at once by the contrast between the rustic exterior of the estate and the elegance of the furnishings within. The living room is cozy yet large enough to accommodate a beautifully restored grand piano. Lord Fairfax himself would have appreciated the fine period dining room furniture. Upstairs, we slept soundly in the spacious bedroom after days spent watching polo and tasting wine, followed by sunbathing around the swimming pool. The cleanliness was impeccable and the privacy was absolute. Carolyn's bountiful breakfast buffet featured a variety of breads and fresh local fruit. Relaxing over excellent coffee, we discussed with her how to make the best use of our time. Since she knows the hunt country and her neighbors well, her seasoned advice ensured that we did so. We'll return to The Lord Fairfax Country House soon.
