Thank you Vlad for a wonderful time at 20 Herenstraat. The decor was exquisite as well as the atmosphere. The comfort of the bedrooms was second to none. The kitchen was splendid.....overall it was like a home away from home.

We stayed with Vlad and Ken for several days on our travel home to Minneapolis, MN from visiting our children and grandchildren in Paris. All aspects of the Maes deserve high marks in our estimation. It is an easy walk from the Centraal Station, easy to find (be sure to differentiate Herenstraat from Herengracht), in the most-pleasant neighborhood, and very spacious and comfortable. We were welcomed by Dima who assisted us in many ways: carefully explained use of the kitchen privileges, helped get our luggage up to our unit, sourced a new power converter for our laptop, and provided an excellent breakfast (generous offerings of fresh fruit and juices, cereals, croissants and great coffee) every morning while he gave us insights into life in his home country of Latvia. A friendly group gathered around the breakfast table in the morning--just what we hoped for at the most-friendly B&B Maes. Sue and Jim Meister, Minneapolis, MN

An excellent stay just prior to Christmas, 2008. Ken and Vlad are terrific hosts and their staff, Jason, is equally friendly. The room and house was very tidy and the breakfast excellent. While the stairs seemed daunting, a little teamwork conquered them easily - such is the charm of the city. The location is incredibly convenient and the street noise level minimal. Would definitely recommend to fellow travelers.

My husband and I have stayed at the Maes (and its neighboring partner, the Heren) three times in the past three years. Each time we have had a different room. Each stay has been superlative! Incredible hosts and support staff make certain you are comfortable, well directed and well fed. The rooms are each different and delightful. Much more space than a normal hotel would offer plus much nicer ambiance. Having use of a kitchen and the terrace makes an afternoon break easy and enjoyable. The B&B location is excellent for city exploring - you can walk to almost everything - 10 minutes from Centraal Station, another 10 to Anne Frank House, maybe 20 to the museum area, 1 minute to the chocolate shop and another to the pub across the canal. Plenty of really good/interesting dining options in the neighborhood in addition to a really good breakfast at the B&B (warm, homemade croissants daily). The Maes is in a real neighborhood so you have a sense of home, not so much tourism in a very touristy city. Amsterdam is my favorite weekend break - I would not consider any other place to stay than one of Ken's and Vlad's. One caveat - that stairs are steep (as in all of the Netherlands) but it's good exercise. They do help with your luggage.
