I have stayed at Miriams twice during pre Christmas visits to NYC. With only 2 rooms-1 a single ,it is more a guesthouse than ornate bnb but quite comfy with sort of a Coastal New England aura. She serves a generous fresh cooked breakfast based on your preferences which she will ask about when you reserve. The larger bedroom is more bnb style with antique bed and fireplace and windows everywhere with views of the trees-lots and lots of trees! I had the single room with Hollywood 1950's headboard and an antique desk. No tvs in the rooms but Miriam was fine with me watching tv in downstairs parlor when I returned at night. She is early to bed so no fights over the remote!! On my first stay I arrived in the evening and walking the winding path thru the stark winter trees had a fairytale quality like little red riding hood heading to Grandmas house. The bath tho shared is just steps from either room so not really an issue- lovely handmade soaps in a basket. The bus from the ferry runs pretty often and stops right by the house, takes less than 15 minutes from ferry terminal and tho I came mainly to enjoy the beauties of Manhattan during Christmas I have come to love the contrast of Staten Island and it is worth exploring even if your mainly looking for a more affordable alternative to Manhattan. There are small museums and lovely old buildings. Back to the bnb . The 1st floor has 2 parlors and a dining room guests can feel free to enjoy and a large selection of books and magazines, many of local interest. I look forward to staying here again maybe in warmer weather when the wraparound porch must be very inviting.

My name is Walter Kesting and I have stayed at Hartshorne House about six times over the last few years when I visit NYC. Miriam is the BEST hostess I have ever met. Her home is clean, her food is delicious and her thoughtfulness for her guests is superb. THANK YOU Miriam!

I stayed with Miriam for 4 days and thoroughly enjoyed her company and lovely house. One night I was not feeling well and she nursed me back to health going out of her way and more than is expected at any B&B. She had fresh flowers, artisan soaps, delicious and very filling breakfasts, but the best thing was her company and someone to talk to. She went out of her way to help me through a hard time and listened with good advise. She even gave my a ride to an appointment and the last day helped me to the ferry. But due to a rainy day she continued helping tooking the ferry with me to Manhattan and on to the subway with my luggage. She is a real gem! This is no 5-star hotel, but it is even better because of her and her kindness. And what a value in NYC

We stayed with Miriam this past week and thoroughly enjoyed our visit with her. We had fresh flowers, artisan soaps, delicious and very filling breakfasts, but the best thing was feeling like we were coming home every night. We affectionately referred to Miriam as 'mom'. She went out of her way to meet my special dietary needs and provide sightseeing advice. She even gave us a ride to the ferry the first day when she realized we missed the bus while purchasing our Metro Card at the local market on the corner. She is a real gem! This is no 5-star hotel, but it is even better because of her. And what a value in NYC!

Beautiful "country" home in the city. Just a short walk or bus-ride to the Staten Island Ferry. Miriam is serious about her beautiful breakfasts.

I stayed with Miriam for 6 nights last week. If you are looking for the lap of luxury, look elsewhere. If you want a clean, comfortable place to stay while touring NYC, then come here. The house was built just after the Civil War, and it is showing its age, but it is a very hospitable place. The food is excellent, and you will not walk away hungry! The bus and ferry ride to Manhattan are both very convenient. I would recommend this B&B to anyone on a budget who wants to see New York.

I stayed 4 nights in October 2009. Miriam Ellis was a lovely host who was always helpful with information and had wonderful breakfasts prepared for you. My room was very nice and the bed was comfortable. The bus stop was right out front which took you to the ferry and the ferry was just a short ride across to the exciting city of new york. I would stay here again.

This place is outside of busy and noisy manhattan, so you enjoy from your visit in a cosy, homely athmosphere, while still being in the "Big Apple". Miriam Ellis is a wonderful personality, and cooks everyday a wonderful breakfast! Pay attention : Only book this B&B when you have the time, to relax, have a good breakfast, and have the time to take the ferry to Manhattan. Everything was clean, and the rooms were nicely decorated. The bathroom was ok, but could do with a renovation. Overall : really great value for your money, and a very warm thanks to Mrs Ellis!!

Our recent visit to Hartshorne House was most delightful and relaxing. Ms. Ellis was a gracious hostess, serving an amazing breakfast with all the trimmings. The residence was as if we were staying at our own grandmother's house. The rooms were comfortable and quiet. Transportation to NYC was easy. The bus to the ferry was literally at the front door and the bus ride to the ferry took less than 5 minutes.

Of all the sights we saw in our whirlwind 11 day tour of New York City, Hartshorne House is the highlight. Rising at dawn, we were always greeted with a pot of hot coffee to enjoy on the front porch, then a beautiful and very scrumptuous breakfast to sustain us for the sightseeing we would do for the day. Not to be forgotten is the trip into the city. Each way, the ferry passes the Statue of Liberty. New York City is a treat that will last a lifetime. We arose before dawn and arrived back long after dark. We saw as much as we could see and enjoyed every moment. The whole trip would not have been as magical or as memorable had we not stayed at Hartshorne House. Of all the experiences of our stay, Ms. Ellis warmth and hospitality and the feeling of coming home each night as we walked up the drive are by far the best of the entire trip.

Miriam Ellis is a delight, and an excellent cook. Breakfast was a feast I would only expect at a three star hotel in New York City. She even had a copy of the morning paper next to my table. The bed was the best by far I've had at any B&B, with new linens; and there was a bowl of fresh fruit on the desk top.

I have spent May 2007 at Hartshorne House for working on my book. Mrs. Ellis supported me with coffee, food and overwhelming friendliness. I had incredible 4 weeks there, feeling more and more being at home. It's a quiet, romantic house, very clean and the breakfast and little extras are fantastic. Thank you, Mrs. Ellis

Our stay at the Hartshorne House was wonderful, my husband and I felt we were visiting family and were very comfortable with our gracious hostess Ms. Ellis. There were fresh flowers in our very Victorian bedroom with a comfortable bed and windows at every angle and views of big lush trees. The Harshorne House is atop a hill and the view was so pretty. Our hostess, offered sitting rooms in her home to relax and read or watch television. The ferry was so close either by bus or Taxi. Our first morning the wonderful aroma of coffee woke me... and it is truly the best coffee I have ever had! sorry Starbucks, Hartshorne House serves the best coffee! The granola was exceptional, fresh applesause and peaches as well as the most yummy baked bread with home made jams! What I will remember most is the warm welcoming smile of our hostess and her equally warm welcoming home and the lovely aroma of Ms. Ellis's spices coming from her kitchen, OH and the rich creamy homemade scented bath soaps too! We will certainly return! Thank you Miriam! Regards Angelina & Luiz Machado

Comfortable bed in a clean room with fresh flowers and a fireplace. The innkeeper, Miriam, prepared wonderful breakfasts! Fresh fruit (strawberries to die for), coffee, home-made granola, croissants and scones as well as bacon and eggs all served on beautiful china and with the family sterling.
