Named for the year it was built, 1871 House is a "New York City Style" bed & breakfast or City-Style Country Inn offering seven furnished guest rooms & suites. The bedrooms evoke sophisticated country houses. They're accessorized with cachepots, candlesticks, country quilts, baskets, trays, baskets. Architectural details such as the original marble fireplaces have been retained & give the rooms a warm and inviting ambiance with the familiarity of home. 1871 House is centrally located in the historic district of the Upper East Side on East 62nd Street between Park & Lexington Avenues. The Upper East Side neighborhood is an upscale neighborhood surrounded by many of the city’s best restaurants, chic boutiques (Hermes, Dior, Burberry's, Chanel, Gucci, Prada to name a few )and museums (The Frick, The MET, MOMA & the Whitney). The neighborhood also contains many of the city’s most important and beautiful old mansions and town homes and is conveniently located just two blocks to Central Park. The 1871 House is also in close proximity to many sidewalk cafes and is walking distance to Carnegie Hall.

Just spent another weekend at the 1871 House and what a treat. Like last time everything was perfect. The room was spacious and comfortable and full of charm and character. Antiques, high ceilings, big windows, comfy bed. And it's in one of the best and most expensive residential neighborhoods in the city, close to everything, and the best part is that it's two blocks to Central Park. There is nothing 'modern' or 'generic' about this B&B yet it's clean and fresh and elegant in a 19th century town house sort of way. It's not dusty and tired. I only put 'met my expectations' for food because there is no food. And that was just fine. There's a little kitchenette (or some rooms have kitchens I think) with fridge and storage to put food in. Staff is friendly but other than a brief friendly encounter we never saw another person. That's a plus :-) The only drawback is that it's expensive but anywhere nice in NYC is expensive. So it's a rare treat for us but worth it.

We had a wonderful stay last weekend at this awesome B&B! Our room, the Parlor Suite, was larger than it appeared in photos and very very comfortable. We loved the large windows that faced beautiful 62nd Street and the super high ceilings that reminded me of the book "Madeleine." Great antiques decorated the room and the bed was better than our own. For once, the covers on the bed were thick and hearty and enough. And a real cotton quilt and comforter. The neighborhood is one of the best in town -- you are surrounding by elegant 19th historic townhouses and just a quick and beautiful walk to Central Park and 5th Avenue. We loved out stay here -- it was worth the money and will go back. I did not get to see other rooms due only to our time constraints but loved the Parlor Suite. There was some street noise at night but we liked that as it was the cacophony of 'city noise'. But if it would bother you, book a room in back of the house. It was also very private. No breakfast and so you did not have to make small talk with anyone.

The room was even more spacious and more beautiful than I had imagined. The location is beyond perfect. The house is in walking distance of some great museums, shopping and my favorite Central Park. The service was wonderful as the entire staff made us feel like we were part of the family.

My husband and I LOVED the 1871 house. The location was terrific, and even though our room overlooked the street (a bit noisy), it was roomy, very spacious, gorgeously decorated with antiques, and had every comfort. My only comment is, please put the NAME of the room on the door (or the number on the key)--I got a key but didn't know which room was ours! Once I figured it out, everything was super. :-) We'd stay here again!

juillet 23, 2008
This is a very nice place in a great location. It's a walk up, so if you have trouble with stairs, stay in a room on a lower level, or go elsewhere. We (family of 5) had the top floor with three bedrooms and a full (small) kitchen. There is no central air, only two free standing a/c units with an exhaust through the windows. The temperature was in the 90s and these were completely inadequate. The rooms were quite hot. I would definitely stay there again, but not in the summer. Rooms on lower floors are probably cooler. My only complaint about the service is that we had quite a few bags and it would have been nice to have been offered help getting them upstairs.

This was my first time ever staying at bedandbreakfast in NYC. and it was very pleasant. The room is very nicely decorated and give u a very different feeling to a regular hotel room. It is just more personal. The pricetag to me is ok. however it may be expensive to backpackers. Location wise, what can i say. it is close to everything. subway is very near by and quite a few places are well within walking distance. As for food, i kinda wish there could be some variety.

I was looking for a place to stay overnight and close to Lenox Hill Hospital, and am thrilled to have found the 1871 House! The staff was super accommodating, the room was charming and clean, and we had privacy galore. Found a fabulous French Bistro three blocks north - you cannot find a better place with better prices. I highly recommend the 1871 House and will definitely stay there again when I visit NYC.
