We had a delightful stay during the Big 12 Tournament. I really wasn't ready to come home! Great breakfasts, tasty wine, cheese and crackers and great bedtime cookies and tea that got us leaving the games early enough to get our share! Even made some new friends we'd never have met otherwise! Our compliments to the innkeepers and staff!

Each time we visit KC we stay with Nancy at the wonderfully warm and hospitable Southmoreland. Many of our friends have stayed here if only to quiet us from singing the B&B virtues. We take a walk each evening to a small Italian Restaurant down the street. Nelson Atkins Art museum and Kemper are a stones throw away.

Nancy and Mark are seasoned artists and their craft is hospitality. They have managed to attend to everything you could possibly want or need and have done so in a way that is so uncontrived you almost don't notice it. Their inn embodies a tasteful, seamless aesthetic; a mixture of classic but functional antiques, and new, crisp simplicity with comfort being the top priority. Our room was perfect. It was cozy with a subtle nautical theme. A gorgeous antique cabinet concealed a white noise/sound machine, phone book, and other amenities, and on its shelves behind a glass door was a bowl with giant fresh apples, a decanter of complementary sherry, two tiny sherry glasses, and clean drinking glasses. Our bathroom was spotless and stocked with blindingly white, cushy towels, a hairdryer, shaving mirror, and high quality travel toiletries. Our room had a balcony porch, with a porch swing overlooking the deck and the yard. The bed is the most comfortable bed either of us had ever encountered. THE SOFTEST SHEETS on earth. Seriously, softness from another planet. I don't think a higher level of sleep comfort can be achieved than what can be found at Southmoreland Inn. Breakfast was amazing. It was decadent and light all at once. A subtly sweet poppyseed bread was served with coffee, followed by warm citrus braised pears with a cherry and raspberry sauce (a comforting alternative to the usual fresh fruit plate). A veggie spinach and feta frittata came last with a smashed yukon gold potato on the side. It was filling without being heavy. We enjoyed wonderful, stimulating conversation with Nancy and ended our time at Southmoreland with a walk down the street to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (free to the public!). The Inn is located right in the middle of Kansas City's historic Plaza. On every level, this is our favorite bed and breakfast we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Our highest recommendations and praise go to Nancy and Mark at Southmoreland on the Plaza!

We had a fantastic time at Southmoreland. We experienced friendly staff, clean rooms, and fantastic gourmet breakfasts. Not to mention the short walk to many different attractions. Will absolutely be staying here again!

We booked as a group celebrating a 60th birthday. The staff welcomed us with appetizers and wine. When we returned from dinner at an off-site location, the staff had prepared a place in the dining room where we could have coffee and cake, while exchanging stories, taking photos, and opening presents. The party continued the next morning with breakfast and a private set-up in the dining room. The food was excellent. The service was warm and friendly. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We visited on the patio well passed check-out time. Thanks for an awesome memory.

Lovely, large home with GREAT decor. Would have liked to spend more time "hanging around" but had other fun things to do. Pictures of site are exact. Did I say "lovely"?

This was an incredible place to be for a recent business trip. Our group rented the entire house and was able to connect at a very personal level and build many friendships. This house was very suitable to meet this need and enabled many great conversations and opportunities to occur. Our favorite room is the sunroom/dining area. The food was incredible and we would go back any day. Mark and Nancy truly make this place remarkable.

WOW! This place is spectacular. Ask for the Carriage House - fireplace, king bed, sunken tub and even your own garage. The hosts genuinely love what they do. Don't even get me started on breakfast. You have to go to understand how spectacular that meal can be....

Kind, accommodating, efficient staff; breakfast to die for; comfortable, classy decor; every need imagined and met!
A gracious comfortable room with Civil War-era furnishings in burled walnut and the option of twins or a king-sized bed. It is located on the wheelchair accessible first floor and features a two person Jacuzzi in its bath.
Traditional Colonial colors warm this spacious room furnished in Chippendale and offering a restored, original bath with Jacuzzi tub. Richly painted Irish hunt prints hang over the elegant, king-sized bed with hand-tied canopy. Plaid "Mr. and Mrs." chairs sit companionably by the wood-burning fireplace.
This sunny, cheerful room features a queen-sized iron bed with bright brass cannonballs and is decorated in vintage Americana befitting the sponsor of Kansas City's favorite steakburger. After a long day, luxuriate in the unique 32-inch deep soaking tub or enjoy a treetop view from your private deck.
Unique Mission era furniture, including a queen-sized oak and copper four poster bed create historic context for select Benton works in a warm, comfortable guestroom. Private deck and full bath adjoin this important page of K.C. history.
A porcelain Vermont Castings freestanding fireplace complements this authentic Cape Cod room. A cozy fire will warm you as you enjoy the turn-of-the-century carved oak furnishings, notably, your comfortable queen-sized bed. A restored, original bath adjoins.
The Pennsylvania Quaker roots of Coates were inspiration for this guestroom's handmade Shaker furnishings and selection of artwork. A stately silver maple commands your view from the queen-sized pencil post bed, private bath or the swing on your adjoining deck.
The Loose family's Massachusetts summer house "Searocks" is inspiration for this guestroom and bath decorated in a navy and white nautical theme, boasting an ornate, queen-sized iron bed. A very private and spacious deck with porch swing overlooks the courtyard and rock waterfall.
This room has many comforts including a two-person Jacuzzi in the restored, original bath, a 13'x15' private deck with wrought-iron sunning chaises and a queen-sized, brass cannonball bed. Pastel decorator themes, favored by the creators of the "Eskimo Pie," are featured here.
You might first notice the queen-sized four poster mahogany bed flanked by brass lamps from a railroad club car, but the real treasures are on the walls: copies of Bingham portraits that have hung in this home since 1948. A private bath and oversized deck with a treetop urban view adjoins.
Like Southmoreland's last three sets of owners, Mary Atkins was a teacher. Her bequest was the original endowment for Kansas City's art museum. A quiet soul, Mary would have enjoyed this cozy room with copper accents (including a teapot collection), queen-sized pencil post bed, private bath and intimate little deck.
The rich hunt colors, brass accents and duck prints of this "gentleman's library" decor is inspired by Gilliss' bachelor status among K.C.'s founders. A queen-sized pencil post bed, private bath and compact "dormer deck" overlooking the courtyard enhance the comfort of this handsome guestroom.
The rich red patterns, vaulted ceiling, and charming accents are reminiscent of a spacious cottage inspired by landscape architect George Kessler. The room features all the amenities required for a memorable stay: a king-sized bed, free standing fireplace, an adjoining deck, a two-person Jacuzzi and separate stand-up shower in its generous bath. The comfortable club chairs are the perfect place to cozy up in front of the red Vermont castings wood-burning stove. Wake up to your choice of hot beverages and a newspaper that will be delivered to your door each morning.
