All good, although we wished we had a way of controlling the AC in the room. Ellen was a fantastic host and made a huge effort to meet our dietary preferences.

The Wilderness was a wonderful experience and rather than being "Wild" it was elegant, historical,, and a truly exceptional experience. Ellen the owner, was a delight and fixed exceptional Breakfasts which I plan to copy for family and friends (she shared her recipes also!) the home is filled with lovely antiques and each has a story which Ellen relayed. it is centrally located to Baltimore and Washington and yet you feel like you are in a very private forest all to yourselves!!! we will return....Ann Rhoades

Beautiful home in a very peaceful setting, yet very convenient to Baltimore. I needed to go to a conference downtown and this was a perfect alternative to a hotel near the conference center. Very easy drive into town and while I was gone, my wife made herself at home and caught up on some reading on the porch, in the dining room, or under some trees. We stayed in the Blue and Gold room, which was very spacious. Ellen is a marvelous host. Several good options for dinner nearby (we opted for Matthew's 1600 about 5 minutes away).

My stay at The Wilderness was exactly the retreat I needed. Even though I was arriving from a mere 10 minutes away, I found myself in what seemed to be a totally different world-- quiet, secluded, and peaceful. Ellen was a wonderful hostess and prepared tremendously delicious treats and breakfast. The suite was cozy, comfortable and welcoming. I am allergic to cats, but since the my rooms were spotlessly clean and completely free of any evidence of the kitties that live in the house, I had absolutely no problems with them. I truly had a lovely stay.

The Wilderness B&B is the perfect place to escape and recharge. The house itself is very charming with period decor and windows so old the glass has waves in it. The grounds are beautiful. There is an enchanting stream to walk along just across the way, as well as hiking trails nearby. And even just sitting on the porch with a cup of tea and listening to the birds sing held tremendous charm. Ellen, the hostess, accommodated my early check in and was pleasant to be around. Plus, she made a delicious breakfast. I highly recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a quiet escape.

Gracious and comfortable surroundings, a warm and welcoming hostess, and ultra comfortable beds made for a delightful stay at The Wilderness. Did I forget to say breakfast was DELICIOUS? One minor suggestion - a couple more lights for bedtime reading.

We had stayed at the Wilderness about a year and a half ago and were wondering if it would be as good this time. Well it was even nicer. It is such a relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful house. Ellen is soooo pleasant and helpful and just makes it relaxing. It is very clean and cannot think of anything to improve on. I look forward to staying there whenever I visit my son.

We stayed in the blue and gold room. The room is large and feels luxurious. Every furniture piece has a function. It is obvious that Ellen, the hostess, has a passion for historical houses and decoration. Ellen accommodated my wife's request for a vegan breakfast, which was set up in a large elegant dining room. She even baked vegan cookies for us. The house sits on a two acre wooded secluded lot, five minutes driving from Ellicott City and a short drive from Baltimore. Perfect weekend getaway.

My husband and I had an amazing stay at The Wilderness. Ellen is really friendly and super accommodating. We stayed in the Blue and Gold room. It's split into three rooms: the bedroom, a large bathroom and a large sitting room with chairs and a second twin bed. Ellen keeps delicious treats in the dining room for guests to snack on during their stay (the thin, crispy sugar cookies were my favorite). In the morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, include an apple cake and a potato, egg, sausage casserole. The other guests were a real treat, too.

I spend 50+ days in hotels around the world. I hate it. Thus, I now try to seek out alternative solutions. The Wilderness exceeded my expectations on every level. It felt like I was coming home to a family members mansion, while keeping my privacy and freedom to come and go. The Wilderness is a beautiful B&B, well managed by Ellen who made me feel very welcome, the food is excellent, and made to order. I will definitely make the Wilderness my #1 choice when visiting the Baltimore area. If you like running, the Wilderness is located about a mile from the path going next to the Baltimore-Ohio railroad in Patapsco. That's a huge plus for me. Best regards, Jan G, Oslo, Norway

My husband surprised me with a stay at The Wilderness for my birthday. The house is beautiful and Ellen is wonderful. Just the history of the house alone is a great reason to stay, but she adds excellent service to make it that much better. I love this place and can't wait to stay again. I also plan to share this gem with visiting friends and family. Thank you again for a lovely weekend getaway!

My husband and I stayed two nights at the Wilderness and had a wonderful time. The B&B is surprisingly only 15 minutes from BWI (if no traffic) and 5 minutes from historic Ellicott City. There is so much to do close by but we would have loved to just relax at the Wilderness and not go anywhere. The room was very impressive and clean. Breakfast was wonderful. We ate each morning on the screened porch watching the birds and petting the cats. Yes, we loved the cats! They made us feel right at home. We would definitely stay at the Wilderness again! Thanks Ellen.

We had a wonderful time at the Wilderness! Ellen was so friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was delicious. The only complaint I have is that a cat kept showing up in our room! I have no idea how it got there! Luckily, we are not allergic. Maybe that was mentioned on the website, but I don't recall it.

Yes, the kitties do love to go into the suites! I'm sorry they followed you in this past weekend. The only way to keep them out is to keep the suite door closed at all times except when entering/leaving. I'm afraid it's the only method that works consistently - they are very curious and want to go where they aren't allowed...... Cats will be cats. Thanks for providing the feedback; I will try to verbally remind guests they need to keep their door closed at all times to keep the suites cat-hair-free.

This is a perfectly lovely inn, minutes from town (shops & good restaurants) and minutes from the park with its fine walking trails. It's just 18 minutes from Columbia and a great place to stay if you're visiting people over there. The breakfasts were copious, fresh and excellent. We will definitely go back there.

My visit last year was for a joyous event (elementary school reunion), and I was smitten with the Wilderness at first sight. Room/bath were spotless & welcoming; breakfast with my housemates was scrumptious and pleasant. This trip, on the other hand, was a quick turnaround for family funeral. Nonetheless, Ellen was able to provide an experience that offered comfort and peace in the midst of sorrow. Sweets and cordials were offered in the evening, along with the continental breakfast for weekday guests. The Sullivan Suite felt like (my great-grandmother's) home. An HVAC issue early in the morning was resolved at once, even though it meant Ellen had to contact repairman before going to work. Home alone, I spent the hours before the funeral strolling the evocative and restful gardens. There is something special about a B&B which offers that historic feel travelers seek w/o seeming self-conscious or staged. As before, Ellen was a gracious hostess and the overall experience was perfection. Looking forward to fall, when our next reunion will afford me the opportunity to once again escape to the Wilderness.

I loved this house and I appreciated how so much attention to detail was given in the decor to keep everything from around the same period. I enjoyed the freshness of our breakfasts and I liked how there were treats left out at night. We stayed in the Patapsco Suite and I really liked how much natural light our room had, as well.

The Wilderness was an excellent choice for our recent stay in the Baltimore area. You're driving through miles and miles of highways, city, and suburbs, turn off onto a small road, and suddenly you're in the woods. It's quiet. No traffic. Almost seems like you've crossed through a portal into some other world. Ellen was a very gracious host. She got up early to make us breakfast, since we had an early departure. Our room was clean and comfortable. And we enjoyed a casual stroll through the garden.

We were impressed by the Old home, it smelled a little musty when we first entered, but I think old houses are like that. Our room was very spacious and had all the amenities we needed to make our stay very comfortable. We had good weather so we could enjoy an open window at night. I am not sure the home has air conditioning. The view from the porch was so nice and the breakfast was timely and good. Our host was mindful and helpful as well as kind. Great location.

We stayed here for two nights - super easy base-of-operations for going into downtown Baltimore and also seems to be surrounded by some really cute small towns and rural areas. Ellen was a charming hostess. Our stay was pleasant and held delightful surprises, like cordials available in the evenings and chocolates next the beds. Spacious rooms with antique furniture. I've stayed at numerous b&bs around North America, and The Wilderness is the second best of all the bunch. Ellen is a terrific and very accommodating hostess. One of our party has celiac disease, and Ellen was gracious enough to supply not only gluten-free breakfast options, but also to bake up some gluten-free peanut butter cookies as one of her afternoon treats. Cat lovers will be pleased to make the acquaintance of the sociable household cats. People allergic to cats will be pleased to know that none of the cats are allowed into the private rooms. One of our party is allergic to cats, and had no significant trouble from cat dander. (However, pollen was plentiful in the region, so be aware of environmental problems.) My favorite part of the inn was the screened back porch, providing sunshine, fresh air, and plenty of bird watching opportunities with three separate feeders around the porch. So peaceful and pleasant! I highly recommend The Wilderness.

Excellent B&B. Lots of wildlife. We saw a small heard of 6 deer, an owl, dozens of birds. The rooms were clean, large, homey, each with their own sitting room and bathroom. Service was great. Great location only 10-15 min from Baltimore and a better value than any of the hotels in the area. Great hot breakfast, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit bowl, muffins. I don't know why anyone would want to stay in a hotel when you could have an room with sitting room, private bath, hot homemade breakfast (not the powdered eggs buffet style), wildlife, and so close to the city! Great place, excellent value!

My husband and I stayed in the Sullivan room for one night. We were really impressed with the Wildnerness! It's a beautiful old home that the owner has decorated to maintain the historic feel. It has lots of unique touches, but isn't tacky or overdone. Our suite was spacious and comfortable with a bedroom, sitting room, and bathroom. Breakfast was delicious, and the owner was incredibly accommodating, preparing a hot breakfast an hour earlier than planned to meet our schedule.

Stunning surroundings (early November), well-thought out details in lovely rooms, beautifully laid-out home--there's a lot of common space so you feel like the place is yours to wander. A wrap-around porch, a back screened-in porch beckon you outdoors. Slept so comfortably. Scrumptious breakfast (I went back for thirds). Kind, knowledgeable hostess, and CATS! I did not want to leave. I'd definitely go again and hopefully for a longer stay next time. Thank you, Ellen!

My husband and I were visiting relatives in Catonsville. The Wilderness was a much more convenient location than hotels in Baltimore or near the airport. Our suite (Sullivan) was large, bright, and much more comfortable than typical hotels. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bath modern and clean. Great water pressure (not something you always find in older B & B's). The historic house is charming. Breakfast on the porch was a delight. The property makes you feel as if you are "away from it all" amid the tall pine trees - even though you are just minutes from town. The innkeeper, Ellen, is gracious and accommodating. We will definitely stay here again on our next visit.

Breakfast was delicious and filling. As our travels bring us to Baltimore, the Wilderness will be where we hope to stay.

My sister and I stayed just a night at The Wilderness last weekend and it was perfect. It was exactly what we were looking for, and exactly as shown on the website. The mansion is beautiful and the history is facinating. Ellicott City, a very short distance away, was perfect for walking around, dining, and shopping. We wanted an escape from big city life for a relaxing yet active weekend and with the state park so close we got just that. We did a little hiking, a little running, and had a picnic in the park. Ellen is a great hostess and the breakfast she made was delicious. My sister and I sat on the porch drinking coffee for an hour after the meal and it was perhaps the best part of the weekend. We watched birds fly around while overlooking the garden. I will recommend The Wilderness to friends and return myself.

We stayed here for a couple of nights for our Wedding Anniversary. It was an absolutely tremendous place, nestled in the woods and pretty "remote". Rooms were great, patio outside was a nice place to hang out, gorgeous grounds with lots of wildlife, butterflies, hummingbirds, and quite serene. Would not, and will not, hesitate to stay here again. It was a great getaway, and one jillion times better than staying at a regular hotel for what we wanted.

Many B&B's offer superior facilities, friendly and accommodating hosts, and excellent, if not gourmet, breakfasts. Virtually all B&B's, to my mind can be nit-picked, whether fairly or not. Ellen Sawaya and The Wilderness will always stand head and shoulders above the rest in our view because of her more than accommodating cheerfulness and willingness to work with us during a trying time when our son was undergoing serious surgery. Yes, the facilities were far above par, the food service more than met our needs, and the amenities were well laid and thought out. Our thanks and appreciation to Ellen, who made our stay a bright spot in an otherwise difficult trip. Thank you, Ellen, and you can bet your bottom bippie we'll return for second helpings not only of your bright and pleasant companionship, but the delicious cakes and homemade breads you leave out for your travel, and in our case, life weary guests.

The Wilderness is a very cool 18th/19th century home located about 10 minutes west of Baltimore City proper. I took my wife and 5-year-old daughter there for a night, mostly because my wife and I are always hunting for a place to get away. We usually wouldn't bring our daughter along to a place like this, but the chips fell where they did, and actually I'm glad she got to experience the place. The house and grounds are very appealing visually, and because the house is utterly surrounded by the dense woods of Patapsco State Park, we felt much further from home than we actually were (we live 5 min away). And although the house itself is more-or-less period furnished, it's never oppressive--in other words, this is a house that wants to be enjoyed, not gawked at like some untouchable snapshot of a bygone era. The photos on the site represent the place well, although the rooms were MUCH larger than I expected. For me, the ultimate test of a place like this is how well I sleep. You can be at the greatest place on earth, but if you can't sleep, it's not a good time. I can honestly say that I slept as well here as I do at home, which is a rare and wonderful thing. The beds are comfortable and the rooms reasonably-well appointed, and the owner (Ellen) I'm sure would do anything to make sure you were comfortable. Breakfast was really good - my only regret is that my appetite wasn't bigger! My daughter liked playing with the cats, who were very friendly, and she also I think liked the dollhouse like qualities of the house. She also liked wandering around the grounds and checking out the wildlife. One thing I would recommend: if you bring a young child or you're the type that likes to watch TV for relaxation, bring a portable DVD player with you because there's no cable TV here (and there shouldn't be), although there is wifi Internet. We do this automatically when we travel, mostly for my daughter. Overall a great time, highly recommended.

I grew up in nearby Catonsville and had no idea that this wonderful BnB existed. It is perfectly located for a visit to Baltimore. The house is beautifully maintained, with modern renovations that preserve the antique look and feel. We had a two-room suite with a private bathroom accessible from both rooms, so my kids got their own space while my partner and I got privacy. Ellen provides a "continental" breakfast on weekdays (quality cereals, fruit, zucchini bread, coffee, juice -- the presentation was excellent) and cooks on the weekends. We had pancakes, eggs, sausage... It was served on the lovely enclosed back porch. Deer could be seen in the yard. An excellent Mediterranean restaurant (Dimitri's) is at the top of the road -- half is a sports bar, great for couples, and the other half is a family-friendly dining room. Historic Ellicott City is 5 minutes away (by car) and Baltimore's Inner Harbor is only 20 minutes away. You can do the city by day and then come home to a county house. Highly recommended.

The wilderness offers a true authentic (a word often misused in reviews) stay at a beautifully kept old American house without all the fluff and 'faux' romantic accessories of many Inn's and B&B's of this kind. The host is warm and welcoming, not afraid to have a two year old as a guest on the premises and the rooms are peaceful. Even if you're just around on business this place will make you feel like you're on a little getaway immediately. Tip: leave the laptop closed and go for a hike in the nature park where the B&B is located.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Wilderness. The Inn is just beautiful with period furnishings and gardens. Ellen made our stay inviting, especially with a delicious breakfast. I would certainly recommend The Wilderness and hope to return.

It was a great experience...the whole house was impeccable, the cats gave to the house a sense of ownership, the surroundings outside and inside was a step in the past...for a minute I was day dreaming on the activities at that time, the food cooked in the old stove in the kitchen, the rooms decorated with candor, the white vintage dress left out hanging at a room's door as an evidence of time...it was perfect

My two daughters, mother, and I stayed at the lovely "Wilderness" on a spur of the moment get-away. It was a delight from the moment we drove up the long driveway and caught sight of the beautiful old house. We stayed in the Blue and Gold Suite, which was very spacious and easily accommodated the four of us. (In fact, the only slight downside was having to pay extra for my two daughters, age 7 and 12). Ellen had left us an afternoon treat, and then we explored Ellicott City. The breakfast the next day was delicious - homemade, somewhat unusual goodies - in a good way -- made even better by the location on the back porch, surrounded by her flowers and birds at the bird feeder. A true country retreat - hard to believe how close to Baltimore!~ I would definitely return. Ellen runs a first class B&B and is the epitome of hospitality.

Newly wed, and after a long day, the Wilderness was a great place to spend the evening and morning. Quiet, and in the middle of the Patapsco Forest, the Wilderness was perfect for us. Highly recommended!

Facebook, twitter, e-mails, internet chatter, incessant digital cacophony of life...it all disappears in a flash when you spend a little time at The Wilderness. So restful and peaceful, I could while away the day just sitting on the patio watching the endless parade of goldfinches and hummingbirds, reading the paper on the lovely wraparound porch, or just laying about in the lovely Sullivan Suite, reading a book, feeling the muscles and mind relax. Aaaaaaaaaah. Thanks, Ellen.

I came in town for a wedding this month and spent 2 nights at The Wilderness. I love old houses, and this one is well preserved and beautifully decorated. The bed was really comfortable - I wish I had one like it at home. Food was very good, lots of sweet things when I was there - although it's my understanding that Ellen (the inn keeper) will cook for special diets when requested. All in all, I highly recommend this B&B, the location is great and the house/suite very very nice. Although I don't travel to this area very much, I would definitely stay again if I return for some reason.

Nice large room in an old house, with central air. Very comfortable bed. Furniture age appropriate but not in very good condition. Every old chair had worn out springs, and was uncomfortable. Freshly prepared baked goods daily for serve yourself breakfast. Very private, rural setting.

Your point regarding the chairs in one of my suites is well taken. I've made some repairs and will spend a few weeks/a month this summer hunting for some comfortable, but period appropriate easy chairs for one suite. The other 3 suites have comfortable seating available. I appreciate your feedback!

This was our first visit to The Wilderness B&B, but it won't be our last. The innkeeper is a wonderful person - not intrusive, but friendly and helpful. The house itself is a treasure, and the bed was VERY comfortable!

Our suite was spacious and lovely and the inn was an excellent location, convenient to all our destinations but off the main road in a gorgeous wooded area. Ellen was a marvelous host especially considering there were some difficulties with our reservation (which seem to have been my fault(bad spam filter!!!)) We will definitely recommend!

My husband and I were highly impressed during our stay at the Wilderness. The rooms were large, clean, tastefuly decorated. Ellen was wonderful. Breakfasts were freshly made and tasty. We are just waiting for a reason to stay again.

Wanted to spend a weekend away at the spur of the moment this fall, and we found The Wilderness on the Bed and Breakfast website. We arrived at night time, and were glad we took directions Ellen sent us, since it could have been tough to find without them. We walked into this fabulous entry way and it was love at first sight! The house is great, Ellen is friendly, the food was tasty and her little black and white cat was just wonderful. I'm not sure if we'll be back soon since it was a splurge for us, but we had a great weekend and have recommended it to all of our friends. We want to see it at Christmas time, it must be just wonderful. Thanks for a great weekend!!

My husband, our Rotary exchange high school student, and I stayed at The Wilderness recently for the first time. I found it on the internet as we needed a place to stay when visiting my mom at Charlestown. The house is beautiful and inviting. Our suite was perfect since our student could have her own room. Breakfast was delicious - just perfect. And, Ellen was delightful - a great time. Hope we have a chance to visit again!

Our short visit at the Wilderness was very relaxing. The property was beautiful, our suite was large and very unique, and the innkeeper was more than accommodating. We enjoyed breakfast and great conversation with the other visitors while taking in the amazing view from the cozy screened-in porch. We would love to visit the Wilderness again!

My husband and I stayed at the Wilderness Inn for 2 nights in August and had a very nice visit. The house is old and well maintained and the rooms are oversized. Our suite consisted of 2 huge rooms and a gigantic bathroom. The bed was comfortable. Ellen was available without being intrusive and prepared lovely breakfasts for us, everything was made fresh. We were the only guests at the time which was nice. We sat on the screened porch off the kitchen and enjoyed the view of the lovely garden while we ate. The Inn is tucked away on beautiful grounds, very private but you are only 5 minutes away from Historic Ellicott City and Patapsco State Park. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others. One caveat...there are 3 full size cats in residence (not in the individual suites). We are cat lovers so for us that was a bonus.

Every year, I get together with some high school buddies for a couple of days. The Wilderness B&B was a perfect location and Ellen was a great hostess. Rooms were clean and beautiful. We had the place to ourselves and enjoyed sitting on the back porch and retelling stories going back 40+ years. This would be a great location for a golf trip too as room arrangements are perfect, reasonably priced and there are some nice courses nearby. Very nice place.

We are repeat guests at this beautiful home. Easy to come and go as you please. Or relax in the beautiful parlor or back porch. The forested grounds are full of all kinds of plants and flowers. Our host Ellen is like family to us now since we visit several times a year.

What can I say? Ellen has a beautiful home, and is very accommodating. Breakfast was a house special, beautiful, and very delicious and refreshing. The room was cozy, quiet, and just a nice retreat after a night on the town.

This was a fabulous place to celebrate our 29th anniversary. It was 5 minutes away from historic Ellicott City. We loved the decor, spaciousness and seeing deer outside our window. In the morning a lovely breakfast awaited us on the porch. We would recommend this place to anyone seeking a seeking a stylish b and b in the countryside near a major city.

Seven members of my family stayed in this beautifully restored mansion buried deep in the quiet woods off the winding turns of Thistle Rd between Catonsville and Ellicott City. There were other guests too -- and yet there was lots of room for everyone. The grounds are visited by humming birds and we heard a hoot owl -- it was a full moon. The owner is a very gracious, welcoming, and easy going hostess. Breakfast can be taken on the screened dining porch off the kitchen, or on the veranda you can see in the photo. The chocolate cake and cookies at bed time were great too.

The Wilderness allows one to feel the peace and quite away from all the hustle bustle of the daily grind. The space inside and outside of the home is so large and spacious one can kick back and pretend that they are truely 100's of miles away from civilization. It is so nice then to get rejuvinated and go out to dinner in near by Baltimore or Ellicott City.

It is like going into a different era and country even though it is only a few miles from Catonsville. The rooms are immaculate and very elegant. Ellen, the keeper is very friendly and informative and a great host. Her baked treats are fantastic! I would recommend the Wilderness to anybody who wants peace and quiet in an old historic mansion..............

I can't imagine a nicer place! The lovely setting, and the beautiful home, just took my breath away. Then, I went inside and felt like I had time warped back to another era. Fabulous! The chocolate cake was out of this world good. The Wilderness certainly has my vote for the best B and B!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your very complimentary review. I'm honored to be your first B&B experience, and trust you will have many more relaxing and enjoyable stays in B&Bs in the future. However, the kitties do want to be your favorite kitties in the world, so they hope you don't meet friendlier felines in the future.

If your business or pleasure takes you to the Baltimore area, I can think of no finer place to stay. If you're looking for peace and quiet in an elegant, rural setting that's also close to a major urban area and quaint smaller towns, I would recommend The Wilderness and Ellen's warm hospitality. It was a wonderful stay!
