Charles and Susan Allen are not your average B&B hosts. Charles is a wealth of horticultural information about the amazing natural systems he has established on their grounds bordering a state park. Get there well before dark in order to tour the grounds with these knowledgable hosts. The accommodations are spartan, clean, and satisfactory, but not palatial, perfect for nature lovers who need not be pampered. Charles recommended a nearby restaurant (there are few) that was a cajun delight, with great down-home spicy food and foot-stomping cajun music. All in all, a fun and authentic Louisiana experience. Dr. Allen's passion and incredible intellect is unmatched in my experience. The opportunity to share engaging conversation coupled with the nostalgia of home created an environment that all naturalists can celebrate. The Allen team exemplifies a life of passion, love of community, and not to forget southern hospitality. Allen acres bed and breakfast cannot be more highly recommended. Thank you Charles and Susan.

We were pleased with our visit at Charles and Susan's place. They were wonderful hosts, considerate of our privacy and we enjoyed spending time getting to know them as they were both interesting people! My husband enjoyed relaxing inside as the accommodations were clean, comfortable and had a big flat screen television in the common living room area and a cold air conditioner when it was hot outside. I enjoyed exploring the grounds which is full of nature and eclectic art pieces in random spots in the garden. Sitting on the porch rocking chair with the adorable dog Ying Yang that hangs around the property while looking up at the moon in the starry sky was my favorite thing before heading in for the night. The sound of hummingbirds and watching the butterflies in the front garden was a nice way to start the day. I wondered down through the woods to the creek a few times and we drove to Kisatchie National Forest and rode the mountain bikes on the trails. This is such a nice escape from city life! Susan made us a delicious breakfast in the mornings and made us feel very welcome. We had the place to ourselves (next door to their home) so the common area was also a private area for us which made it even better. It would be great for a small group of friends or family to rent out the other rooms and share the home together. I hope our paths cross again bringing us to that area because we will make sure to stay at Allen Acres again.

I am president of the Louisiana Hiking Club. Dr. Charles Allen hosted our 2nd Saturday hike in June. Since we are a statewide organization several members decided to come in on Friday and stay at the B&B. The B&B has five bedrooms (all with king sized beds), 1 3/4 bathrooms, a community kitchen, and a large living room. The front porch is lined with hummingbird feeders and there are plenty of rocking chairs so you can sit and watch all the activity. Amenities include Wi-Fi and a washer and dryer. You are allowed to camp on the property as well. While Susan (Dr. Allen’s wife) was busy making our dinner, Dr. Allen took the children in our group on a field trip (literally) to gather eggs from the chicken coop. Our meal that evening included chicken and sausage gumbo, rice, potato salad, green salad w/ dressing, and a banana and blueberry cream pie. Afterwards we visited the night blooming garden to see the hummingbird moths. We also counted fireflies. (Dr. Allen is part of the Museum of Science National Firefly Watch). On Saturday morning we had fresh eggs (the ones the children had gathered), bacon and biscuits for breakfast. Fueled up we headed out for our hike. When we returned that afternoon, Susan was making egg rolls. She showed us how to roll them, letting us each take turns. (You can take Chinese cooking classes at Allen Acres as well!) For lunch we had the egg rolls, chicken stir fry, sweet n sour pork, fried rice, and German chocolate cake. All the meals were served buffet style. The food was plentiful and delicious! Later, Dr. Allen took us for a walk on the grounds. The tour included butterfly gardens, an analemmatic sundial, two Native American medicine wheels, and two succession wheels among other interesting features. We finished the hike by walking his labyrinth, which you can see from Google Earth. If you are looking for a nature centered getaway, then look no further!

Not the first B&B my husband and I have stayed at, and was surprised at the low rate when making the reservations online. When we drove up, I was again surprised, just at the looks of it. The property looked neglected. Grass overgrown, many places needing a new paint job. Decor needed help, as nothing matched; looked like last minute flea-market buys. When thinking back over our stay though, I came to realize that actually we had everything we needed, just not the extras you come to expect from a B&B (no cookie when you arrive, no mint on the pillow, no private bathroom, no bathrobe on the door, etc. We had everything we NEEDED, like a roof over our heads to keep us out of the rain, air conditioning in the room as well as a ceiling fan in case it got hot, indoor plumbing, a hot breakfast in the morning (nothing gourmet or fancy, but good nonetheless), a comfortable bed. The owners even made it possible for us to have cell-phone coverage during our stay. They were very pleasant and we had good conversation. So all in all it was a good stay, just not what we expected.

Thanks for the constructive review. We are and have not ever hinted that we are a boutique B and B. Our emphasis is nature and we recently had a film producer and film director from London who both enjoyed our outdoors with fireflys, moths, spider eyes, butterflies etc. Our emphasis is outdoors not indoors and we work to have lots of food in the form of wild plants for the animals to eat.

We really loved staying with Charles & Susan and the only downside was that we could only stay for one night. When we arrived Charles took us on a tour of his gardens and we went out looking for moths and fireflies which we really enjoyed. Susan cooked us up a mean gumbo and breakfast, and was nothing but warm and kind to us during our time there. If you are looking for a peaceful stay in the countryside with some charming hosts then this is the place for you, thoroughly recommended.

Wow Charles and Susan were such friendly hosts. If you are looking to have an authentic Southern Cajun cooking experience this is the place. If you are looking for excellent Asian cuisine, this is still the place. The property is beautiful, I highly recommend a guided hike with Dr. Allen - he is a wealth of knowledge.

Dr. Allen and Susan are warm and generous hosts who are clearly dedicated to their guests, exceeding all of our expectations! Susan enthusiastically accommodated our restricted dietary needs with a tremendous variety of creative and well-prepared dishes. Dr. Allen fascinated us with his extensive knowledge of native plants as we explored his vast acreage; discovered his charming, whimsical garden art; and strolled through peaceful, pristine forest areas. The rooms are spacious, attractively furnished, and immaculately clean. The living area is stocked with botanical reading material sure to interest the avid gardener or naturalist. We are looking forward to many more relaxing and educational visits in the future! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Allen Acres B&B is an utterly unique and enjoyable experience on so many levels. The hospitality is superb and the accommodations are excellent. Charles and Susan Allen make you feel like family. Susan is a wonderful cook and a delightful and interesting hostess. The expansive grounds leave more than can be fully explored in a few days, but Dr. Allen is so knowledgeable about the plant life that it is all but inconceivable that there could be a question he could not answer. There is much for any member of a family to enjoy, with chickens, quail and guineas and garden spaces designed with imagination and humor. I’m looking forward to the next visit.

Traveling from Georgia to Texas and found this hidden gem. We wanted something unique other than a standard hotel. This place is absolutely amazing!!!!! Bed and Breakfast is beautiful, spacious, and very clean. The true amenities are in the property itself. The kids thoroughly enjoyed hiking through the woods with the walking sticks available on the front porch and feeding the bunnies, chickens, quails, and guinea. Baby quails were only a week old and so cute. Gathering eggs with the owners was definitely a treat for the kids. Even better it was the same farm fresh eggs we were served for breakfast. When we arrived they even had a fresh watermelon cut up for us in the fridge, perfect for a hot summer day. Right at sundown the hummingbird moths appear a beautiful sight. The back butterfly bushes are abundant with large swallowtail butterflies. This was truly the best stay we've had anywhere and would highly recommend for anyone. If you love nature and relaxation you will not be disappointed. The owners are some of the nicest people you have ever met. PS bring marshmallows and build a bonfire big hit with the kids when we surprised them with smores.
