We were greeted like family, shown around the mansion and offered instructions for site seeing. Our room was immaculate as were the parkour sand the rest of the house. Sally, our inn keeper introduced herself as she prepared French toast and sausage with fruit garnish. Told that it was our anniversary, a bottle of champagne was complimentary and awaiting our arrival. Decker House is a diamond in Mason City!

My first B&B experience and it was amazing. Everything was above outstanding but you only allow that. Sally was an extremely wonderful Hostess, and she went above and beyond what need to be great service in every avenue. Will be hard to find another place in another city to compare. I hope to be able to enjoy her hospitality again. Thank You Sally and your staff,

We just love to stay in old atmosphere settings and to be able to walk around and see what they have throughout the place. 10 times better than staying at a hotel! The Decker House in Mason City, Ia is for sure the place to stay. We will be back. Thanks for your hospitality!,

Very nice property in downtown Mason City, mere blocks away from town central and restaurants. Very nice rooms, quiet at night. Good breakfasts.

A well decorated historical building with a character and charm. We were pleasantly surprised with all this B&B had to offer. The hospitality is commendable. Bravo!!!

My friend and I take a weekend trip once or twice a year. We always stay in a B & B because neither of our husbands like to. I would rate this B & B as average. We felt welcome, the food was very good and the Inn was very clean. But we thought it lacked atmosphere, that special feeling when you walk in and just "feel it." Part of this might be because the building is owned by a corporation and the cook and her husband own the business and the inventory in the house. They do not live there so I wonder if they are not wholly invested in it.The second night we were there by ourselves. We sat out in the living room and read. It was nice and quiet and we both enjoyed that, but it felt strange to be there alone. If I was going to be in the area again, I would probably try another B & B, but if I had no choice, I would stay there again.

While it is accurate that my husband and I do not own the physical building of The Decker House Bed and Breakfast, I thought it best to clear up any misconceptions about who does own it. The Mason City Foundation,a nonprofit organization devoted to historical preservation and the Meredith Willson legacy, purchased the house and restored it to be a bed and breakfast in 2002. It is not owned by a cooperation that receives any cut of the profit or makes decisions on the nature of the business. Like many businesses, we pay the lease and property taxes. We, along with 5 part times employees, do the accounting, cleaning, cooking, bookings, private parties, decorating, purchasing, gardening and the numerous tasks that go into running an Inn. When the Foundation restored The Decker House, they made the choice to put in a fully accessible guest suite on the first floor rather than install owner's quarters. So at The Decker House Bed and Breakfast, we the Innkeepers and our children and pets, do not live at the Inn (although many days, it feels like we do!). We have an onsight night manager that lives in an upstairs room and quietly makes coffee every morning at the crack of dawn. I love the art of innkeeping and work hard to prepare delicious food every day, inform guests about the many activities to enjoy in Mason City and provide an attractive and clean environment for our guests to relax. We also run a full time children's theatre in Mason City where we teach classes, direct a main stage theatre season and tend to the daily tasks of its operation. You will not likely find us with our feet up in front of the fireplace, but we will do our best to make our guests feel welcome and satisfied in this beautiful, historical, architecturally unique Inn.

We had not specifically planned to stop in Mason City but having stayed in The Decker House, I'm glad we did. The house and the adjacent residential area is beautiful, with interesting architecture, some fascinating history and a real sense of community. We arrived late but the staff were there to get us settled in and while we had to leave early and were unable to partake of the full breakfast, we had a continental breakfast which was more than adequate.

Our second stay in the 3rd floor Magnolia Suite - the only one with the jacuzzi. A bar of soap would have been nice. All they had was body wash. They'd upgraded the bed to a king, but because of the narrow staircase, the mattress and box spring are two twins so there's a seam in the mattress. As last time, it was cold, no - downright freezing, and the only way to regulate the temp is to manually close A/C vents in the room. The thermostat is on the second floor and off limits to guests, and set for second floor comfort. We enjoyed our stay and the hosts were very friendly. The breakfast was fantastic and was a great start to our day.

My husband and I love staying in B&B's and this one is at the top of our list. The atmosphere could not be more welcoming, delicious breakfasts and the cleanliness and rooms.....superb. Sally and Sophie are the perfect owners of this B&B. Thank you for a memorable experience. Dan and Dianne C.
