6-1 inch slices Challah bread
6 fresh eggs
1 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons maple cream
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Place sliced challah bread or any fluffy fresh baked bread in 200 degree oven until dry (5-10 minutes) This step is to dry the bread out so it soaks up more of the egg mixture.
Remove from oven and set aside on cooling rack so bread doesn't get moist. Increase oven temperature to 300 degrees.
Beat eggs, orange juice and orange zest together in a large enough bowl to dip bread in easily and set aside.
Put 3 Tbsps of butter in each of two 7x11 glass baking dishes and heat in oven until butter melts. Watch carefully to avoid burning butter. When butter is melted remove from oven and add 3 Tbsps of maple cream to each dish and stir to mix thoroughly. Set aside and increase oven temperature to 400 degrees.
Dip bread slices one at a time in egg and juice mixture until soaked. Let excess drip off and place three slices in each dish so that each slice is coated with the maple cream/butter mixture on the bottom of the dish.
Sprinkle tops of slices lightly with cinnamon. Bake for 15-20 minutes just until bread on the bottom of pans turns golden brown. Turn oven off and let set in oven for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. When serving turn slice over on plate so that bottom of slice faces up on plate. Serve with maple syrup if desired, but it's not necessary.
