Fig Tree Inn

  • Inn Details

Originally built in 1915 as a summer beach home for the Arnot family, the Fig Tree Inn is a lovely old cedar shake shingle cottage in the traditional Southern beach style. In 1997, an extensive but extremely careful remodeling project was begun. The original wooden floors walls and ceilings were refurbished in beautiful and serene colors. Central air conditioning, new plumbing, and a modern kitchen were installed with as much care taken to retain the homes unique flavor. The result is a charming Bed and Breakfast with six bedrooms, each with a private bath. A lovely living-dining room and a wonderful porch where you may enjoy breakfast. We will make your stay at the Fig Tree Inn a memorable experience. The Fig Tree Inn is a two-storied house that has two bedrooms on the first story and four bedrooms on the second housed with many antique furnishings. The second story has a large deck with a view of the ocean. The first story porch with many comfortable chairs for lounging. Each porch has a swing that can seat a couple. A stroll away from the beach(1/2 block away), restaurants, and antique shops galore. The Fig Tree is within walking distance of music and beach festivals and outdoor movies.

    Innkeepers Description:

Dawn and Kevin Eggleston just started their seventh year of owning this wonderful Bed & Breakfast. They have made a lot of friends during these past years and look forward to seeing them come back. They enjoy walks on the beach, shopping for antiques, visiting other B&Bs and seeing all the fabulous sites of the world. They also like playing some golf whenever they find the time (inbetween spending time with their granddaughter and grandson!)

My husband and I needed to travel to Jacksonville, as he is being seen by the Mayo Clinic. It was my husband who found the Fig Tree Inn and suggested we stay there. To be perfectly honest, I had absolutely NO desire to stay at a B&B. But I decided to anyway. I am so glad we did. The Fig Tree Inn is the only place we will ever stay while we are in Jacksonville! We've had to return once a month since February for follow up visits to Mayo and each time we can't wait to go back to our "home away from home" Dawn and Kevin are absolutely wonderful and the Inn is beautiful. We always stay in the "Garden Room" but all the rooms are beautiful, each with their own theme. We love the relaxed, no pressure, atmosphere Dawn & Kevin have created. They provide everything you need from a variety of food in the kitchen to little touches, like a variety of toiletries in the rooms. You could never stay at any hotel and have the proprietors ask how you are doing and actually be concerned with your health and well being. If you are needing to stay in Jacksonville, The Fig Tree Inn is the place to stay! You won't be disappointed.

    Very Disappointing!!

We were very disappointed with the Fig Tree Inn. The location was what we wanted but the location is all we were happy about after our stay. We were not greeted on arrival and never even saw our hosts until the third day. Why even be open to new guests if you are not there? The room we had was small but true to the pictures as to decor and amenities, however we did not find the place to be very clean or in good repair. I repaired the sink drain to allow water to drain from it. The place is old but a scrub brush and paint would go along way to make it more appealing. We found the bed to be uncomfortable, waking up often every night due to backs aching. The "Continental Breakfast" on weekdays is just a couple of boxes of grocery store pastries in the kitchen. No fresh coffee but the owners provide small hotel style coffee makers in the rooms. (these really don't look clean and I know that they do not make very good coffee). Apparently we were expected to go into the refrigerator to find things to eat and search through cupboards to find the dishware to eat it on. I had never seen a "Continental Breakfast" that wasn't served on some kind of serving trays with coffee, teas and juices all available for guest selection. I question if the approach at this place would even pass a health department inspection as there were no visible serving tongs and anyone willing to eat the stuff would likely be using their fingers. We got disgusted and found an open restaurant. (This was Christmas Day but luckily there was an open diner nearby). A regular breakfast on Saturday and Sunday was an improvement and there was certainly plenty of fruit and variety, but in truth the food (and its taste) was just average. In summary, we never felt like a guest at this place. It's all about the personal touch. For the price of this place ($145-155 per night) I know I could have stayed in a much nicer hotel room (I checked that out) on Jacksonville Beach!

    Innkeeper Response
We are sorry,we certainly want every guest to be more than satisfied with their stay at The Fig Tree Inn and work very hard to make that happen. In this case, we would like to address a few of the points he found unsatisfactory; his concerns are primarily rooted in misunderstanding and in the fact his preference for a more formal/structured approach and our more easy-going approach are simply not congruent. As for us not greeting him upon arrival, self check-in is a service we have provided for years as a "no-pressure" check-in time. Most of our guests really like our unique, relaxed approach to check in. We do typically drop by to check on new guests - the only reason we did not stop by that night because it was Christmas Eve and we were spending it with our family. Our breakfast policy is clearly stated on our confirmations and website. Our intent with "self-serve" is allowing guests to help themselves in the main kitchen at anytime,we want our guests to make themselves at home! Our homemade items are sometimes combined with pastries from our local bakeries. Coffee makers are in every room, kitchen and parlour. As always during the week(and especially on Christmas Day, the first morning this guest was at the inn)we have fruit trays and juices set up in the refrigerator with plates and utensils in cabinets. One note of particular concern we want to address: health inspections. This is something we take very seriously. Our inn has been inspected 4 times per year for the last 11 years and we have NEVER failed an inspection. In closing, we want to say our beautiful inn is 95 years old and it has a character all its own.Our weekend full sit down breakfasts are always cooked with pride and joy.As innkeepers, we put a lot of our heart and soul into making each and every guest feel at home and leaving as a new friend. Our business has thrived because of our return guests and their referrals over the years. We want to thank each and every one of you for your love and support!

I have stayed at the Fig Tree Inn with my sweetie twice. In 2006 we stayed in the Garden Room and this year, in the Palm Room. Both are great, but I prefer the Garden Room for its large bathroom! The Innkeepers are so friendly and do their best to make sure you have a wonderful stay. The beach is just a short walk away and staying at the Fig Tree provides an escape from it all, even in the middle of busy Jacksonville Beach. Best time to stay is end of June, beginning of July when figs are ripe on the authentic fig tree behind the inn. We recommend this lovely B & B to all our friends!
