We had a great weekend at the Pirate Haus. Captain Conrad (in full pirate regalia) was gracious and made us a personalized pancake in the morning. The other staff were friendly and helpful, as well. The Fish Room had a comfortable bed and futon and was wonderfully decorated with hand-painted murals and other artwork. There's pirate and sea-faring decor everywhere you look in the common areas, making this by far the most fun B&B we've visited. Looking into other rooms, they have sizes to fit larger families as well - one has a king-sized bed and bunks to fit 8 people (and a newly painted wall mural). The location is perfect for walking in St. Augustine - we parked, then walked throughout downtown and to the San Sebastian Winery. Parking is limited (as expected downtown), but staff suggested several public parking options to us and let us know the pros and cons of each. I highly recommend the Pirate Haus. We plan to return soon.

Only 3 parking spaces, so I couldn't park there and the check in and check out was complicated because of the lack of parking space. A suggestion would be to keep one of these parking spaces exclusively for check in and check out.

The location can't be beat. You're smack dab in the middle of downtown, historic St. Augustine. Walking distance to everything or just hop on the pedicab. Or horse drawn carriage. Parking is not convenient, but that is expected for the location. We parked in the main parking garage and walked our luggage in... About 10 to 15 minute casual stroll, taking in the sights. The room was clean and comfortable. My 2 year old LOVED the plethora of pirate toys in the family room. It was all I could do to get him out of that room... Wifi was available in the guestroom and there was Netflix in the family room. I enjoyed meeting the other guests and chatting as we ate the complimentary pirate pancakes or while the kids played with the pirate ships. I'd definitely recommend this as a nice budget accommodation in the center of Historic downtown St. Augustine.

I was looking for a place to stay on a Saturday night. Everything was either booked or in the $300-$450 price range...everything except the Pirate Haus Inn that is. I was skeptical in that we are a couple and it's billed as a family B&B with bunk beds all around. Don't worry about...book it and enjoy! The location is downright perfect. If you are looking for the romantic charm of a traditional B&B, this may not be your place. But it's clean, comfortable, and they serve delicious pancakes for breakfast. Conrad even spells your name backwards so that when he serves the pancake your names are on it! Somehow he even knew how to write good morning in Belarusian for a couple that was from Belarus...unreal. I can go on, but you really must come see this B&B for yourself!
Thank you for your review. We try to make breakfast special for everyone. it's my favorite part of running an inn in the morning, I get to meet everyone!

If you want to be in center of St Augustine at a real nice price, and if it is after or before a long bicycle ride , its THE place to stay. Conrad, the owner, is very helpful for everything, and hes really speaking all those languages

When we checked into this place we knew we found the gem. Conrad is so personable and they immediately treat you like family. The location is amazing! We will stay again.

Opening the door of the pirate haus inn is opening the door of another world. A world in the dreams of the boy in me. Every wall in the hall has some pirate memorabilia, the stairs show the text of a pirate song and the whole building breathes the air of a charming European style youth hostel. Our jungle room was clean in a way you can expect of an old building. It's not perfect or shiny, for this there are other solutions in the area with a whole different price setting. 5 times 5 stars is a personal interpretation of what I expect of something in this price cathegory. And you get plenty for your money: a lovely room, excellent coffee and pancakes in the morning, lots of info on where to go and where not to go, friendly staff, a common room full of games and toys. I would recommend to all my friends and family and will certainly come back, likely for more than two nights.
Thank you for your review. I do try to temper people's expectations. We're not a 5 star hotel like a Hyatt would be. We do strive to be 5 stars in our price category though like you mentioned in your review. I don't want to attract people who think we're on the same level as the Hyatt and then leave disappointed. Our clients are down to earth blue collar professionals for the most part. Rafael Nadal stays somewhere else. They guy that is ranked near 1500 in the world just stayed here twice on his way to and from a tournament in Miami.

I recently stayed with my wife and two year-old at the Pirate Haus Inn. We really enjoyed it. It is a great place to go with your family and our kid loves the bunk bed. Unfortunately there is so much to do in St Augustine we did not have much time to enjoy the "Haus", but the rooms were very spacious and clean. they have all the basic stuff you need. The owner is a very nice guy, who even called us before we got there to let us know the Easter Parade was going to start and it was going to be hard to get to the Haus, so we went and enjoyed a Park close by until we could drive to it. We also missed the awesome "personalized" pancake breakfast every morning, so the last morning, although way passed breakfast time, the owner made us some farewell pancakes as we were checking out. The Haus is right where you want to be in St Augustine. We will definitively stay there again

I went with around 20 girl scouts to St. Augustine and stayed here. The owner is AMAZING and we had the best pancake breakfast! We even discovered next morning that he was in the reenactment and gave the girls a demonstration of the cannons. Clean, LOT of room, great prices and a nice area with shops just up the road!

My boyfriend has been raving about this place since I met him nearly 4 years ago. When we were invited to a wedding in St. Augustine, I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to try it out since we would be sharing a room with another couple. We stayed in the Map Room, and it is much larger than the pictures show! The four of us had plenty of space and we never felt like we were bumping into each other. Treasury street was closed to traffic, but we were able to find nearby parking and walk to the hotel. There are only a handful of guest rooms so it feels like you are staying in someone's warm and inviting home rather than a motel or hostel. John checked us in and was super friendly and gave us helpful recommendations about places in the area. We saw him several times throughout our stay and he always made sure to interact with us on a personal level, inquiring about our plans and following up later to see how we enjoyed ourselves. The pancakes at breakfast are delightful! They will draw fun shapes, like pirates, in them and they may even write your name ;) Overall, this isn't a place with a lot of frills, but you will feel like a personal guest and you will be comfortable, safe, and have a great time. I will definitely be back!
Thank you for your review! That's exactly what we're trying to achieve "Overall, this isn't a place with a lot of frills, but you will feel like a personal guest and you will be comfortable, safe, and have a great time. "

My husband and myself stay at the Pirate Haus every time we need to get away for a long weekend! The Pirate Haus is in the best location of historic downtown St. Augustine. It's within stumbling distance of all our favorite water holes!

The rooms are quaint. Sheets are very comfy! Rooms were clean. The kitchen not always so clean. Not so much the Inn's fault, as patrons are supposed to clean up after themselves. However, the trash can was constantly overflowing and the manager on duty would just walk by it over and over again....playing candy crush on his phone.

This small Inn was hard to find due to the construction that the city was doing but it was a gem! It has great character and the décor was fun. I originally booked a 4 person room and was surprised with a 6 person room. Staff was accommodating and nice but not overly sweet like a typical B&B or Inn(which was a relief to me). The location of this Inn made it hard to surpass for the price, I'm glad we didn't. Everything is literally in walking distance from this place! I would definitely recommend a stay here and would likely come back!

Did not advertise it was a 5 star hotel and it's not. Location was great and the people are friendly.
Thank you for your stay with us, and I'm glad we're not a 5-star hotel, because if we were then we'd attract an entirely different class of people. I much prefer our educators, firefighters, families, law enforcement, military, and international travelers, who keep it real! No need to put on airs here, we gladly leave that to the froo-froo B&B's!

Stayed here last year on short stay while driving around Fl. Was gf's daughters birthday and she loves pirates so this seemed a perfect fit. Her daughter couldn't believe how the number 10 pirate themed room was decorated. She kept remarking how it was the "coolest place we've ever been!" (we travel a lot and she loves staying in different hotels). From an adults perspective this place is right in the heart of it all on treasury street. Just a very short walk from the fort the , the pirate museum (her favorite) , and many great places to eat and drink. The hospitality of the hosts was also outstanding (again a repeat of my last visit) with them providing great tips on our visits to several area attractions , surprisingly the best for us being the fountain of youth. I would absolutely stay again on my next stopover if ever I do and as a very seasoned traveler both internationally and domestically I would definitely recommend this hostel to any interested in staying in such a great little city.
Thank you for your review, I'm blushing! Now contrast this with the one from Monday Jan 5, just two reviews below. But perhaps it is because we're trying to improve our cleanliness as the earlier reviewer pointed out. I still haven't put the shelf in but it's on my list! Glad you enjoyed the Fountain of Youth, they've put a lot of time and money into improving it over the last 10 years, and they've done a great job.

It was our first visit to St. Augustine and found the Pirate Haus Inn to be affordable with a great location. We haven't stayed in many Inns or B & Bs before so maybe our expectations were off. Our room was fine, but hadn't been dusted or wet mopped in a LONG time. There was a thick layer of dust on my bedside lamp and major dust on the wood floors. There was also a used wash rag hanging on the shower when we first arrived so that made me wonder how clean the bathroom was. It felt like a dorm more than a B&B. It was a very casual place. It could use more storage or counter space in the en suite bathroom - just a shelf would've helped. Had to request towels each day. Parking was a nightmare because the street in front was torn up so we parked in the city parking garage. Bring your own soap, shampoo/conditioner because what they provide isn't very much. Hair dryer is available at the office. You can only use the Inn computer during breakfast hours and printing is .50/page. Overall it was fine because of the great location and walking distance to the Historic District. I hope they improve the cleanliness of the rooms.
Thank you for your review and pointing out our deficiencies. We have new cleaning crew on board and we will work with them to ensure that we maintain a higher standard. Some times a washcloth escapes notice, but rest assured that the bathrooms are cleaned and disinfected between guests. The rooms floors are vacuumed after each guest, however not under the beds very often, so I will admit to that, mea culpa. I will be installing a shelf as soon as things calm down a bit, and I appreciate the constructive criticism. Yes, if you want new towels, you have but to ask. Most of our guests just air dry them between uses and we don't go into rooms to protect our guests' privacy. The bunk beds in addition to the large bed probably give it that 'dorm feel', but I think your kids appreciated them if I'm not mistaken. Your eldest's knowledge of sports was impressive! You can use the Inn computer at any time, so I don't know where you heard only breakfast hours. We tell our guests to bring their own soap/shampoo because what we provide IS the cheapest money can buy. We cut corners in that area precisely because most folks bring their own. We are trying to provide the best value in our location. The Hilton is directly across the street. You could have parked there for an extra $21 per day instead of availing yourself of our free parking garage offer. I think that is a huge value, worth more than 3/5. I hope that future guests balance this review with the one titled 'Only Place We Stay' below. Decide what type of people you are, and make your choice accordingly. We will always be the best deal in town!

Good location in downtown St Augustine, though parking was an adventure due to construction. Unique place to stay with themed, beautifully decorated rooms. Pancake breakfast is fun, owner is a really nice guy.

Very good location, parking available and affordable. Although our room was a good choice for a family of five on a budget, we think that there should be paid more attention to the cleanliness of the kitchen. Conrad is a great guide, gives valuable advice.
Kitchen cleanliness is a bit of a problem when our kitchen is open for guest use. I could put a door up and lock it outside of breakfast hours - then it would stay clean, but then some of our guests would not be able to cook their meals, which is more of an issue for those with dietary restrictions, or the parents who want to sterilize their baby binkies, or the guests who want a cup of cocoa at night. So for now I will sacrifice convenience for cleanliness. Please feel free to email me and let me know specifically what areas did not measure up to your standards and I will see what can be done.

I went on a weekend stay with three friends. We got the Captains room with the king bed and three bunk beds. The eldest member of our group got the king bed and each one of us got our own bunk bed (top and bottom). We really enjoyed our stay, we were close enough to everything to park the car for the day and walk the streets sight-seeing, shopping and stopping for lunch and dinner at several of the many eateries along the way. When we were exhausted we all came back to the Inn to nap in peaceful room. If you like historic homes and funky decor, this is the place for you. After we checked out Corey was nice enough to show me around the other rooms that had now been vacated and we are planning our next family vacation there.
Thank you for your kind words, but you gave us a 'C' average! What could we have done better?
4.4 on October 23, 2014
This eclectic lil place isn't for everyone, but you knew that as soon as you saw it's name. It's like staying over at a friend's place, not one you know well enough to be your kids' God parents, but one you know enough that they welcome you into their place. It doesn't have all the amenities that a Hilton would have, but it's not $300/night either. Staff has always been friendly & the rooms have hot water, small fridge, and a place to rest your weary head after walking around the historic district all day, partying all night (or both). Can't beat the price or location. And as a small business owner, I would much rather give my money to someone that pours their heart & soul into a place (it shows) than give it to Paris.
From one small business owner to another, thank you for your business and thank you for your review!

The Pirate Haus Inn is a great place for students, families, and anyone who enjoys an out of the ordinary experience. The pirate accommodations are quite nice for the value, amazingly quiet, and the proprietors are quite friendly, helpful, and interesting. There may be more expensive places to stay in St. Augustine, but I know I'll return to The Pirate Haus Inn!
There is no 'may' about it, everywhere in the downtown historic district is more expensive. We struggle to keep it real for working families and blue collar workers.

I will start with saying, that I was a little hesitant about booking a room here. It was a new experience for me and I was nervous. That being said, it was one of the best places I stayed! The staff is so friendly and helpful. The location was fantastic for about everything there is to see in St. Augustine! It is older, but what in St. Augustine isn't! I will be staying there again for sure and recommend it to anyone with a family for sure that doesn't require fancy soaps and big screened TVs! Love this place!
Thank you for your review and thank you for staying at the Pirate Haus. You had low marks for Guest Room and Cleanliness. Please please drop us an email at email@example.com and tell us how we can do better! Don't be reluctant, it will help us! Aye, we try to be as clear as possible that we have the cheapest soaps/shampoo that money can buy, so bring your own. However we don't skimp on the chocolate coins (Belgian) nor the coffee (100% Columbian and strong!) And we don't do TV's because who wants to hear dueling Westerns at 2 in the morning? Thanks for staying, hope to see you again!

We read about the inn on Tripadvisor and we changed our route of our road trip to give it a try. I'm glad we did! We only stayed for 1 night. We arrived late afternoon and could park next to the house. We are a family of 4 (2A, 2K) and we stayed in the jungle room (room 6). It has all the required amenities, even a fridge. Although there was a lot of street noise, we had a good night. The breakfast were the famous pirate pancakes, served in the kitchen (which could use a good scrub). The location of the inn is perfect: in the middle of the center of St Augustine, close to the fort, close to bars and restaurants. Would definitely stay there again (though from Belgium to Florida... it will take some time :-) )
Thank you for making the detour to stay with us! The street sweepers in the morning can be noisy, but all hotels in the downtown area have to deal with this. We do clean the kitchen every day, but the sink cabinet is falling apart so we're waiting for it to go on sale again before we replace it with a new one, so it will be soon and then I'm sure it will look much better. I will email you separately to get the specifics on what could be better. Hartelijk bedankt hoor!

The Pirate Haus was like going to stay with a family friend. As soon as we walked in the door everyone was so friendly. The pancakes in the morning were awesome. A couple of the mornings we were there I didn't want to get out of bed to eat and my daughter begged her father to take her down so she could have pancakes again. The room was clean and well kept and lots of fun for my kids. The only problem at all was parking but it is an easy walk down St. George St from the parking garage. The walk was actually a good thing after all of the eating we did. We will be staying there again next time we come to St. Augustine.
Thank you for your review. I just want to point out to other guests that we have 3 spaces next to the Inn for which we charge $5. This goes to offset the free parking we provide at the Visitor Center Garage fro those who don't get one of our spaces. There is private parking directly across the street which costs $10.

The Pirate Haus Inn was a fine place to stay in downtown St. Augustine with two boys. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable, the sheets soft. There was no television, but that was okay, because we didn't spend much time in the room. The room themes are great. We stayed in the pirate room and loved it. I would caution anyone with difficulty climbing stairs, because this Inn is on the second floor and the stairs leading up to the rooms are very steep. Parking presents a challenge, but that's normal for St. Augustine. Do your research, be prepared to walk and you should be fine.

This hotel proved to be a fantastic place for our family to stay over spring break. The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms very comfortable and the kids loved the bunk beds! Pancake breakfast was awesome and I loved that I didn't have to make the pancakes myself! :) We loved the pictures and messages the staff created in the pancakes. The kids still talk about this hotel and we'll no doubt stay there again on our next visit and recommend it to friends.

When you decide for a stay in the Pirate House, you need to be aware that this is a special place, somewhere between a Hostel and a Hotel. You'll finde rooms with bunk beds, but they are very nicely decorated - pirate style - and clean. WiFi is free, as well. But some things you silly can't beat: that's the location so close to, or actually in the middle of historic St Augustine for an unbeatable price, and their flair; housekeepers who clearly love their property and a pancake breakfast that you'll never forget - that's the dining part of the rating. Seems a little odd to me calling it dining, but we are talking bed and breakfast after all. Great! I rated the room only three stars in order not to raise expectations of a fully-equipeed, modern shiny hotel room, but when you familiarize with what to expect it's just great. And overall, flair, service and value beats it all, I would rate it outstanding!!

We have stayed here several times and love it every time! It is not the same as staying in a hotel. It has personality. The rooms are good sized with a refrigerator and you can use the kitchen there anytime. Love it!!

We came up last weekend for a wedding, and had our 2 young children with us (ages 5 and 11 months). This is exactly as advertised a family & budget friendly Inn. The location is perfect right off St George St, King St a stone's throw away, awesome! Yes Harry's gets loud and I could hear people talking under my window in the middle of the night, but it didn't wake my kids so I was good. My 5 year old was in love with the toys in the common room, and when I asked him what his favorite part of the trip was ( I was thinking he would say the Fort) He said "the bunk beds!" What impressed me most though was the hospitality. When we arrived the gentleman who checked us in went down and help my husband park and helped with our bags. After we checked out my husband asked Conrad where we should park so we could sight see for a few hours before we drove home, and HE GAVE US HIS PARKING SPOT! Totally above and beyond! If you are looking for a plush typical hotel or B&B this may not be for you, but if your looking for something different and kid friendly this is great. P.S. We didn't at breakfast there because I'm gluten intolerant, but they looked and smelled amazing!
Thanks for staying with us and writing a review. I'm working on putting some plexiglass on the inside of the windows to deaden the street noise. Any we do try to have some gluten free pancake mix on hand.

Pros: 1. The staff are awesome...friendly, accommodating, funny, and down-to-earth. 2. Family-friendly: quiet times are enforced, staff are great with kids, and place is safe 3. Location is in the heart of the downtown area. You can walk almost everywhere. 4. Rooms are large 4. Basic essentials are provided Neutrals: 1.This is listed on a B&B website, but it feels and looks more like a hostel. We had a young child (less than 2) with us, so we were not looking for romance. So, no big deal. 2.pancakes, coffee, and fruit on one of the mornings were all great, but this is all the breakfast is comprised of. Very adequate, but nothing fancy. Cons: 1. Location is in the heart of the downtown. (Yes, I already wrote this in the pros section.) Harry's restaurant and bar is located a block away and plays loud music all night. One of the nights we were there, they played until 2am. The windows do not block the sound of the music or the people walking by as they leave the area. The staff tried everything to accommodate us (even called the police), but the reality is that this is the downtown area and the bar is allowed to play loud music until they close. Luckily, Harry's doesn't have music every night. Mainly on the weekends, holidays, and school breaks. So, keep an eye on that and you will be okay. If you are older, perhaps you don't mind staying up late and this is a non-issue.
Thanks for your review. You are right in that our location is both a blessing and a curse at times. Harry's does a Mardi Gras thing once a year and they blow away the neighborhood with noise until 2 AM. They hire off-duty cops at $33 an hour for 5-6 hours, and I guess this entitles them to do what they want. Our complaints to the police fall on deaf ears, but I do plan to take this BS up with the chief. We can't change the front windows to modern dual pane windows because of the "Historic Architecture Review Board". I do plan to look at adding a plexiglass panel to the inside as a way of creating a dead space and deadening street noise. Soon I hope! As you said, nothing fancy. All the other 'fancy' inns are above us in the listings. We strive to provide the best deal for visitors. And as you mentioned you had a young child with you, most other inns don't accept kids under 12, if at all.

We heard about this place from a friend. My husband was a little iffy at first, but after browsing around the website, changed his mind. The entire stay was perfect. It was a relaxed home-like atmosphere and probably the first place we have stayed with our 4 kids where they felt comfortable being kids. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and we felt very welcomed. It was like we were just staying at a long-time friend's house, rather than a hotel, which is exactly what we were looking for. Breakfast was delicious and the kids felt like we were at home eating pancakes in our own kitchen. I would recommend Pirate Haus Inn to everyone I know!

We had a very pleasant stay at the Pirate Haus Inn! Everyone there was friendly and it was in a great historic district location - perfect for our family of four. Pancake breakfast was both tasty and satisfying (truly all you can eat!), beds were fine, and room temperature very comfortable. The pirate theme and our map room were fun, although not a place for "hotel snobs." No hidden surprises - their website depicts the establishment without fault.

Our family of four stayed in a private room in Nov 2013 for 2 nights and had a wonderful stay. Free pancakes for breakfast, good coffee, and plenty of fridge space in your room or in the kitchen in the shared fridge. Can't get a better location in St. Auggie than this. Whole staff is warm and friendly.

If you're looking for the Hilton or a fancy hotel, go elsewhere. If you're looking for a super casual, friendly, fun place to stay.. You've found it. If we stay in St. Augustine again, it will be here. The pancakes are on point, there are pirates.. And Gold Tooth Dave gives a great walking Ghost and History tour. Totally worth it for your visit, if you're into super casual hangouts. Thanks guys!

This was an overwhelming and awesome hostel with an extremely friendly captain Conrad, pancake maker Dennis, informative pirate Dave, and a very funny pirate crew. This is by far the best location in St. Augustine.

Was fun - stayed in jungle room - 3 of us. Comfortable, clean, enjoyed chatting over pancakes in the morning. Great location - can walk to all.

We (my husband and I) enjoyed a very pleasant weekend stay at the Pirate Haus, it is close to everything and the people, both the employees and the other guests, were very nice and laid back. The only thing that I would change is, it would be nice if the bathrooms were updated at bit. It was functional, and clean enough to feel comfortable using, but very out of date and seemed to have had many handy-man repairs over the years. I would stay there again and would bring my young son next time.

There was nothing not to like about this place. By the name, you know it must be themed, especially in St. Augustine. My business travel places me in a lot of high end chain hotels, though I want something different when I travel for pleasure. The pancake breakfast and interaction with other guests and staff put the pleasure in this stay. The quaint and old world charm, along with the themes, are simply a bonus. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

Fun place at a good price! Right in the middle of everything - left the car parked for 2 days. Nice group of guys running the place. Minimal amenities, but good pancakes and coffee in the morning.

Jungle room has an amazing view of downtown, and since you are right in the heart of the historic district, people watching was great. Parking is an issue, but the staff helps you remedy that. I don’t eat pancakes so did not try the breakfast, but this place is such a bargain.

Fabulous location in Old St Augustine. Roomy room with two sets of twin beds, a full size bed, a desk and an old-fashioned shower-tub. Plentiful hot water. My kids LOVED the pancakes and the crew is friendly. Cozy "living room". Room color scheme is delightful. My only wish: a few more hooks, in the bath room and the bedroom, to manage towels and clothes; maybe a shelf in the bathroom for stuff?

This was my second stay in less than a month at The Pirate Haus It has an amazing location right in the middle of the Old Town with everything within no more than a ten minute walk. The staff is extremely nice and go out of their way to be helpful ( Mike the manager and Dennis the pirate/pancake maker I'd single out for their superior service). The private room was very nicely appointed with a pull out couch and a mini fridge as well. In addition it was spotless which is always a good sign to me about the care a hostel staff puts into their work. Overall I have been to many hostels both in the US and abroad and I can honestly say you'll be quite happy if you chose to stay here. Thanks for everything guys Chris

Great central location, friendly staff, and a great value. Everything looked pretty clean, but the bathroom could seriously use an update. It was noisy outside at night on the weekend, but this is to be expected right down town. I would recommend The Pirate Haus Inn for anyone visiting St. Augustine on a budget:)
Aye, you're right, the bathrooms need updating...but then I'd have to raise prices, so it's a conundrum of sorts. Re-bath will do it for $3,000 per bathroom, so I'd have to take out a loan, raise prices and hope people still came back. Unfortunately the city wouldn't let us do insulated double pane glass on the front side of the building. Thank you for staying and posting a review however!

We encourage anyone, young or old, single or with children to stay at the Pirate Haus Inn, St. Augustine. We just returned from our stay there and it was so wonderful! The pirates make a pancakes and fresh coffee in the morning. We have been there twice and consider the hosts our friends. It's truly a special place. Sincerely, Storm & Maryellen Seattle, WA

Not fancy, no antiques to break, just clean, safe, convenient, cheap, comfortable, fun, and genuinely welcoming. I can't imagine a better value for your lodgings dollar and it's a bonus to have the opportunity to get to know the staff of gentleman pirates and guests from all over the world. I epecially enjoyed Conrad's map of restaurants to try and those to avoid (he just blacks out the ones he doesn't recommend) and am forever grateful to Dennis for not only escorting us to the bus stop and staying with us until the bus arrived, but dragging all our way too much luggage as well. (he makes a mean last-you-most-all-day pancake, too!) Thank you, my pirate friends, for maintainig the best little "treasure haus" in St. Augustine!
Thank you for your review!

The Pirate Haus was perfect for our family. It's centrally located with off street parking for those who book a private room. Having bunk beds in the room really made it more fun for our kids than the average hotel room. There really were no negatives. Everyone was friendly and helpful and Dennis makes a mean pancake!

The price for the location is outstanding. The check-in guys were very informative, but could be a little more friendly. Parking stinks bc you get blocked in. However, it forced us to rent scooters, which was by far the best thing to get around on and our son loved it! The crew was extremely awesome and friendly! I liked how there was one main kitchen, you get to meet other people and the same with the common room...makes it feel like a home away from home. It's not a Hilton, if that's what your looking for, but if you have kids, looking through a child's eyes makes it a great place to stay. It's the first thing my son tells about when talking about his trip to St. Augustine.

The room was larger than we expected and very comfortable with a set of bunk beds in addition to the queen size bed. The location is perfect as you can walk to everything. The people staying in the Haus were from all parts of the world, which made for interesting common area chit chat. Staff was quite friendly and accommodating and even did our laundry for a small fee $6. Everyone was very respectful of the 10:00 quiet time.

Found this hotel through Google Maps. Read the reviews and most were good. They were all right. Great location, right in the middle of everything in St Augustine. If you want a place where you can park (for free) and walk around the entire town, this is it. Very neat place. NOT your normal hotel. It is a fun place. HUGE room for a great price. Great service from everyone I interacted with (via email and then while at the hotel). Fun pancakes. I won't spoil the surprise. Great breakfast discussions in intimate kitchen setting. All in all, a great find for a great price. Will definitely come back.

LOVED this place! It’s up 19 old creaky stairs (which I loved!), and it’s a hallway with rooms. A few private rooms, and a few dorms. They have a patio/deck, a full kitchen we can use, and a living/play room with tons of books/toys/game/TV/computer. It was like staying at a friend’s house. They make you pancakes every morning that are DELICIOUS, coffee/tea/milk/water. It’s so homey and friendly. Our 1st 2 nights we stayed in the Pirate Room and we loved it so much we stayed another night and our last night we moved into the Jungle Room. Each room has a theme and is decorated. No TV or microwave (Who needs a TV in St. Augustine and they have TV/microwave in kitchen/living area) but they did have a small fridge in each room. We were right in the middle of the Historical District. It was so nice. Everyone there is so nice, friendly and helpful. WE LOVE THIS PLACE and our 5 month old loved it too! We are even going back in a few months!

Since there are 5 of us (and Sister from 500 miles away made 6 on this particular trip to St. Augustine), I thought it would be difficult to find accommodations in St. Augustine that fit both our family and our budget. The Pirate Haus was perfect. It's got enough room for everyone. It is clean. The staff is friendly and attentive. The pancakes are awesome! My sister had never experienced this kind of accommodation before, and I was proud to show it to her. She really enjoyed it. I know we will be back; I bet she will too.

I have stayed at the Pirate Haus 3 times prior to this last visit, and it is a clean, safe, basic place to stay in Old Town St. Augustine. It is 'bare-bone' and very simple, but it is clean and extremely well-located to enjoy St. Augustine. The only criticism I would give is their parking situation - so if you come, understand you will be able to park one car for free (and make sure it is a smaller vehicle if you want to comfortably park).
Aye, we state this everywhere we can. You can park one car for free and if everyone drives a Suburban or a 15 passenger van or another land yacht, we won't be able to fit everyone in. Also, it's FREE. Hilton charges $21 extra to park, St. George Inn charges $5 to park a block away. And to top it off, we have the lowest prices in the historic district. By bare-bones, that might mean no TV and no pool. There are motels and hotels that have pools, but you pay for it. Many low-cost motels in town are filling in their pools due to the high insurance cost (probably due to personal injury lawyers and lack of tort reform, but I digress..)

Being on a limited travel budget sometimes you just take what you can get. And then suffer thru. Not so with the Pirate House Inn! Wow, what a great customer service, wonderful fresh smelling beds, clean bathroom, filling and tasty breakfast! We couldn't make a better choice. By staying right in the heart of St Augustine we could explore all what should be seen, enjoy great meals and have some cocktails without thinking about how to get back to the hotel. Conrad and John made out stay just wonderful! We had German company with us and were a mix of all ages, from 25 up to 56 years old. Everybody had fun and we look forward to coming back again!
I love it when guests get to exchange cultures at the breakfast table and then head out together into the night!

While there are definitely nicer places to stay in historic St. Augustine I would challenge anyone to find a better value for the price paid. Each night includes a great all you can eat breakfast made by the owner himself. The rooms were dated but clean. I was also happy with how quiet it was at night since it is an old building with the other rooms very close by. I would recommend this place to anyone with kids!
We strive to be a welcoming place for kids, where they can feel at home and have some fun instead of like a generic sterile hotel/motel. The cap'n is a big kid at heart!
4.4 on May 15, 2013
Perfect for a fun stay in Saint Augustine. The staff is incredibly friendly and personable, and the theme makes for an outstandingly unique experience in the historic area of town. As you can tell from the name, the place has pirates as the central theme, which dominates the décor throughout the building. I was surprised to find out that only one of the rooms retained the piratical motif. We selected that room to stay in, and were quite happy with our choice. The building itself is somewhat historic, which only adds to the charm. The fact that it is historic does mean that spaces aren't quite as large as modern patrons are accustomed to, but they're not tiny by any means. Just about any family should feel right at home in a place like the Pirate Haus Inn. The rates are fantastic for being located right in the historic downtown area, and you can fit as many as seven in the Pirate Room, assuming four can comfortably sleep in bunk beds. While the rooms don't have TVs, they do come with complimentary wireless internet. We brought a laptop and just streamed our entertainment on that, so the lack of TV wasn't really an issue. The pancake breakfast was quite tasty. The recipe was homemade, too, which was much better than the generic Bisquick variety. And if you're looking to take full advantage of saving money on your trip, you can store groceries in your room's mini-fridge or the larger fridge in the kitchen, and then use their facilities to make your own meals. Overall, the quality of the experience is amazing for the low rate in a great location. I would highly recommend staying here to anyone I know.
My thoughts exactly ;-)! Actually our rooms are quite large compared to some at the Casa Monica from what I've seen! And there you pay for parking and a resort fee and internet and phone and the list goes on....

Understand that this is basically a hostel but for thoughs looking for budget stay, especially families with kids, you cannpt beat price and location. The crew is extremely nice (John the manager, Dennis the cook and Conrad the owner). Spent some time over coffee and pancakes chatting with them. And the pancakes are seriously good!

Never have I stayed somewhere as welcoming and utterly home-like. The staff are down-to-Earth and yet very on top of any question you may have. Breakfast, and the company of those eating with me, was absolutely grand. My stay was everything it was advertised to be and more! I expected moderate accommodation and slept in a bed with the same comfort level as my own at home. I expected the normal, distant communication between myself, the staff, and other lodgers...only to discover a place that truly felt more like home. I will definitely return to The Pirate Haus when next I visit St. Augustine!

Captain Conrad has created a fantastic place to enjoy your vacation in St Augustine. His personality, like the rooms, is warm, quirky, welcoming, and open. He is the best pancake maker this side of Mrs. Butterworth's and knows how to make anyone from any walk of life feel like an old friend. The private rooms have private bathrooms, and each room has a fun, colorful theme. I have been visiting the Pirate Haus for the last 15 years, and it has continually improved under Conrad's ownership (since 2003). All the best historical sites are within an easy walk, from the Fort, to the La Leche shrine, to the Lightner Museum. It is a great value for the budget minded, but does not cut corners on quality. Definitely a gem.

We stayed 4 nights at the Pirate Haus Inn (March 22-26, 2013). The room was simple, but spacious enough. Make sure you bring your own toiletries. The stairs are very steep, so might not be good for people with bad knees. We appreciated the quiet hours (10 pm to 8 am), and the guests seemed to understand that. But the noise from the street is terrible! Between drunk people yelling and car blasting window rattling music, I did not find it a restful place. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. The rest of my group had no trouble with the noise and slept fine. I can't fault the Inn for the street noise, just something to keep in mind. I thought the staff was friendly and breakfast time was very fun, with the kids playing together and the adults visiting. You don't get this experience in a fancy hotel where everyone keeps to themselves. I would recommend this Inn and a visit to St. Augustine - it was fun!

What a gem this place is! The location, the staff, the rooms, and the experience! We found it to be such a treat to be able to put kids to bed and then walk across the hall to the common room and "fraternize" with the patrons. Pancakes were delicious, and they even took requests for new shapes! Conrad, Dennis and John were all a pleasure. Thanks so much- we will spread the word!

This is the second time I have stayed here, and I have loved it both times! It's good for all ages and types of people. Conrad and Company make the morning pancakes with awesome designs. If you are travelling on a budget like me (a college student), this place is great! The building has lots of character, and the rooms are clean; plus each of the rooms have a theme. I have stayed in the jungle room and the ocean room. It's very safe (nightly lock with code for guests only), and it's within easy walking distance or quick drive of everything fun and cool in St. Augustine. I highly recommend it, and intend to return!

We stayed at the Pirate Haus Inn during the Christmas season and during the Festival of the Lights which is a beautiful time of year. Our family rented a room and enjoyed our own bathroom and very comfortable beds! The separate family room had a nice Christmas tree and another family staying there with younger children were able to have Christmas and presents on the tree. The kitchen was comfortable and very clean, with all the pancakes and grapefruit you can eat! I love the friendly atmosphere and close proximity to Historic St.Augustine. St George Street, the harbor and bridge and the Basilica were only one block away. I will bring my mother with me next time, it is a fun and very clean place to stay! (I even saw them scrubbing the stairs and cleaning the hallway floor the first morning we were there.) Thanks guys! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Want something out of the ordinary for a bargain price? Pirate Haus. Friendly staff. Great for kids - preteen and younger. Right in the middle of town. Don't expect luxury, or gourmet breakfast. Basic pancakes. Minimum room - no tv. But - easy walking distance to downtown St Augustine and the water. Would do it again.
Thank you for staying with us and for writing a review. I wouldn't call our pancakes basic, they're pirate pancakes, and if you google them and check the images, we lay claim to the first 30 or so! No TV's that's true, but with our location in St. Augustine we don't think they're needed.

With other establishments charging $200-300 a night, this is the only place we could afford within the historic district. It's not going to give you a wake up call, it's not going to wait on you hand & foot, or pamper you w/ rose pedals & hot tubs in the room. It's more like staying at a friend's house. You know where the fridge is & there are other people here. And they treat you like friends, not like you just paid $300 for them to kiss your feet. I'm much more comfortable in this type of place. It's cooky, it's fun, and within walking distance of just about everything we love about St. Augustine. We park our car in the tiny parking lot & don't touch it until we are leaving town. Quite refreshing from our normal lives of driving everywhere. Know what you're expecting & love it! That's what we do anyway. ;)
Thank you for your review and for staying with us! We can actually do rose petals upon request!! And I'd love to do hot tubs in the bathrooms, but I don't think there's room (when the building was built there wasn't even indoor plumbing!)

The Pirate Haus is a unique accommodation in the heart of downtown St. Augustine. The Haus has both dorm-style rooms (perfect for individual travelers) and spacious private rooms (perfect for families or groups of friends). The pirate theme runs throughout the haus - from the entrance steps to the room decor to the toys in the communal family room. If you are looking for a fun and friendly place to stay - this is it!

My children and former spouse live in St. Augustine, as I did for many years, yet we did not know about the Pirate Haus. I'm so glad that we know about it now! I will recommend this comfortable, hospitable inn and hostel to all of our friends and family visiting St. Augustine. I was there with my 72 year old mother and four year old daughter. We walked everywhere! It was wonderful! I enjoyed the freedom of having a community kitchen where I could grab a great cup of coffee (and use a real mug that was just like something I'd have at home) or cook on the stove. My only suggestion would be to PLEASE hang some small shelving in the bathrooms. Loved John and the Captain...they ROCK! (Actually, all of the staff I spoke with are really amazing and interesting people.)

It is the room he proposed in as well as the room where we spent our wedding night. Before our engagement we'd spent a number of ultimate, St. Augustine date nights in the hostel. We adore it! It is more than just budget and family friendly. The staff is intelligent, courteous and worldly. The location is ideal. I recommend the Pirate Haus to backpackers, families and locals who just want an evening downtown. It's one of my favorite places around and I've been fortunate to travel through various areas of the world in my 30 years. Thanks Conrad! Keep it up Mate!

Had a great stay. The room was clean and quite comfortable. Being an old building the bath was rather small but to be expected. Really loved the pancakes and the designs on them. A very relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff. Will definitely stay again and recommend it to friends.
Aye when the building was built there was no indoor plumbing, it was added when indoor plumbing became fashionable and they had to cut up the floors to put in in! Thank you for your business!!

Stayed here recently and the experience was great! I needed a pickup from the airport and the Inn arranged for a pickup for me that was less than a local taxi or shuttle. Is within walking distance from everything you could be looking for and is in the area of many great attractions. No television in the room but why do you need a television with all the stuff that surrounds the area.

Had some issues with the internet that were taken care of, don't think the room was checked or clean towels left. Parking was an issue but it was overall a above average stay. Capt. Conrad was hepful and infomative.

We really enjoyed the Pirates Haus. We have always stayed in a regular hotel & decided to try this & we are so glad we did, the kids really enjoyed the common room they got to meet different people from around the world. We enjoyed some time when the kids went to the common room & the people running & visiting the haus were all great. Having pancakes (which were great) & coffee with different people in the kitchen was fun we meet alot of interesting people. The location was perfect right in the middle of everything & the owner is the most friendly helpful person we meet in all of St Augustine, he will help you with whatever you need to know. Thank You again for the great stay hope to do it again soon.

My family and I have been visiting the Pirate Haus for at least 10 years. The rooms are always clean, and the service is spectacular! I always feel so at home when I'm here. It's right in the middle of all the attractions and sights, and Conrad makes the BEST pancakes every morning!!!!! We will definitely be back next year!

I just LOVED being at the Pirate Haus! The crew was GREAT! It was absolutely wonderful! Out one window the sights and sounds of the city, on the back deck, more sights and sounds, like entering a whole new place! Breakfast pancakes were AWESOME! I will never stay anywhere else! This place is slap dab in the middle of the city. It's walking distance to everywhere! Did I mention Pancakes? lol

Always a pleasure to stay here. Conrad (the guy who runs the place) is always making sure everyone is there having a good time not just in his hotel but also while visitors are out in the city. I always go back to the Pirate Hays when I'm in St. Augustine

This was an absolutely perfect place for our 3 night stay with our 5 1/.2 year old boy. The staff was super-friendly, our room (Pirate room) was specious and fun. The pirate shaped personalized pancakes were a hit. The location is right in the heart of old city. This is far from luxury, but is fun and a great value for your money

We had a great stay. My boys (4 & 6) loved the decor of the room and loved the pirate toys and pancakes. I loved that we could leave the kids to sleep in the room while we relaxed with the other adults. We will be back!

Family-friendly Hostel. Accommodations were basic but comfortable. Proprietor was friendly and helpful. Great location. Kids loved the pirate decorations, room full of toys and the opportunity to hang with other families in common rooms, and of course the customized pancakes.

Myself and 2 friends started our travel around the South with a stay at the Pirate Haus and it was fantastic! Every recommendation they gave was spot on. The location of the hostel couldn't be more perfect and the pancakes were great. It definitely set the standard for accommodation for the rest of the trip! We loved it!

Reviewed July 20, 2012 NEW I had a very nice time at your Pirate Haus. The staff was very friendly and the rooms were very comfortable. My daughter loved playing in the TV room with the other kids all the pirate toys. I have stayed in alot of places in St Augustine and this was great. I will be back again. I did have late check out this morning but I had to get home to my dogs. Thank you John and Conrad for a very nice place to stay.

A friend and I stayed in this "hostellodge" for a two night stay (Thursday and Friday). The location is right in the heart of Old St. Augustine within easy walking distance to the majority of attractions we wanted to see. At check-in, the host - "Captain" Conrad gave us a full debriefing of local restaurants and sights to see (which were high priced but worth it, low cost or free, etc.). His suggestions were very helpful. He also made the best pancakes for breakfast each morning - including some fun surprises. The rooms each have a decorating theme, which was ok, but the quality of linens, bathroom facilities and arrangement of beds is definitely more of a hostel setup. Would be great for families (our room included two sets of bunkbeds and only one queen). Parking is a little cramped, but it is included in the price and worked out well for us. The only attraction we drove to was the St. Augustine Lighthouse out on St. Augustine Beach. All in all, the Pirate Haus Inn was fun, a great location, and the accomodations were pretty much as advertised and expected.

Best place we've ever stayed in St. Augustine. The people who run it are fun and helpful, and their advice on where to go (or not) comes from a very welcome and frank perspective. Would recommend 10 out of 10 times, in fact, we're planning on sending friends there soon.

Great place in the middle of the everything. This is a good place for the kids, they were looking forward to it so much as we have stayed there a few times. The only thing I could ask for is a pool "it's got in FL." But, we really like this place and will be back. The beach is very close though and of course you can't beat the location.

The Pirate Haus was like home away from home. With a fully stocked livingroom with Pirate toys, TV and computers...both the kids and I were well entertained when rain kept us in. Capt. Conrad is the best. The pancakes were my children's favorite part of our whole trip. The Pirate Haus is a must stay when visiting St. Augustine with your family.

Staff was great - they don't take themselves too seriously and that makes it so much more relaxed. I've been to other hostels where you can just about HEAR them talking about you when you walk away. here, they are eager to help you enjoy the area. Hostels are great bec you can meet up with ppl and go bar hopping together. No curfew so you can come and go as you like. Party at night, creep home and sleep til 2! Burn yourself on the beach? Retire to your room early and sleep til 10...The nightlife is just around the corner on St George. Add LOCATION + PRICE + STAFF and it's the best damn deal you will find it town! Cheaper than a parking ticket - which ST Augustine is ANAL about (stay within the lines!!) Take their advice and park your car WAYYYY over the bridge in ANACONDALAND or whatever its called. You won't need a car for days here and it will only cost you parking tickets!

Ahoy Mateys!!! My husband and I stayed at the Pirate Haus for our anniversary. We got married in 2006 in St. Augustine and some of our wedding guests had stayed there during that time and said it was wonderful, so we decided to give it a try. It certainly lived up to the hype! Not only is it ideally located just off of St. George Street, but it had free parking which was awesome. When we first arrived we were greeted by John, who give excellent advice on where to go in the city, we took it and were not disappointed! We stayed in one of the private rooms which was great! It not only had our bed, but some bunk beds in there too. Seeing that quickly translated to "We have to bring the kids for a weekend, they will love this." The first morning we woke up and we met Cap'n Conrad who made us "Pirate Pancakes." I have to say I have never seen mine and my husband's names in a heart shaped pancake until that day. Not only did it kick our anniversary off just right, they were delicious with fresh blueberries! It's a great place with great people. It was a quick and easy decision that this will be where we stay every time we visit St. Augustine, with and without the kids. Thank you so much!!! Nicole and Ryan

I first stayed at The Pirate Haus back in 1990 when it was under different management and have been back many times since. The location is awesome - literally 1/2 block off St. George St. pedestrian shopping, 1.5 blocks from the town square, 1/2 block from the intercoastal, and 3 blocks from the Castllo De San Marco. Staff is friendly and helpful. Pancakes are fun and good. The atmosphere is relaxed, unhurried, and comfortable. Rooms are on the austere side - not a fancy B&B but a good, clean, fun (the decorations are great and kids love them) place to lay your heads. No TV's in the rooms, which is A-OK. There are 5 free parking spaces, which is usually enough and a huge help b/c St. Augustine is a nightmare to park. The pirate theme is delightful. My son, who's 4, loved it. In fact, he loved it so much he almost cried when we left and has cried several times since, asking to go back. He's never done that before, even for our visits to Disney. I'll always consider this a special place and will definitely come back - strongly recommended. Check out their video on YouTube.
Awwww, that's so cute. Thanks for choosing us and I'll try to get some more foam swords so I can get in a swordfight with Nash, though it might be a few years before I can get one in with Nash's brother....;-)

The location is GREAT! So close to everything. Conrad was on the mark with where to go for meals and liquid refreshments. Had the best pizza and fish tacos. Parking was convenient and well choreographed. Plenty of HOT water and great shower pressure in room 9. Comfortable bed. Friendly hosts and guests. Want to go back soon and will recommend to friends.

We recently spent 12 days in Florida - a few days at the DisneyWorld Dolphin resort, a few days at a top tier Marriott Suite on Clearwater Beach, and a few days at the Ritz Grande Lakes resort - with two nights at the Pirate Haus Inn in the middle of it all... It was great! It was the clear favorite for my kids - Cap'n Conrad couldn't have been nicer. He found out my kids' names before breakfast and made them personalized pirate pancakes before I even knew who he was. ( My husband handled check-in obviously.) The room was clean, the bathroom was clean enough, and it was a great value for us to each get our own bed for a couple of nights for $80! We had a blast strolling the streets of St. Augustine, loved the Fort and the Pirate Museum, and my kids couldn't get enough of just hanging out in the room playing with Cap'n Conrad's pirate ships. They enjoyed some much-needed down-time which is always in short-supply on a lengthy vacation full of sight-seeing. My favorite part was Cap'n Conrad's brutally honest reviews of neighboring restaurants, museums, etc... I felt like we had the inside track on what is worth the money and what isn't. And we took his advice and got dinner from the Tasting Room one night. I'm still thinking about it. YUM!!!

There were four of us sharing a room at the Pirate Haus for 3 nights. The room was clean and orderly with fresh towels waiting. Conrad was there each morning making his pirate pancakes and provided information about what to see in St. Augustine. The location was fantastic, right in the historic district and close to everything. I would not hesitate to recommend the Pirate Haus to anyone interested in a fun economical stay in St. Augustine.

Take a good look beforehands, you get what you book. The Pirate Haus is a very cool place in an extremely good location within the centre of St. Augustine. However, expect a hostel-like atmosphere - but done in an extremely atmospheric way. The place breathes its motto, but it is not your typical bed-and-breakfast. I highly recommend it for anybody adventourous or if you travel with children.

The Pirate Haus has a fabulous location in the middle of the shopping/dining district. We loved the convenience of walking to everything. Our host made great recommendations for dining. The bed was very comfortable and the inn is charming! A nice change from chain lodging. I would highly recommend if you like staying in a place that is unique and full of character and personality.

Overall I was Happy with our room and the inn. It was an excellent location, well within walking distance of everything in St Augustine. Our room slept 6 people, compare that with a 2 person room at the hilton and the price cannot be beat.

My husband, son, and I recently stayed at the Pirate Haus for 2 nights on our Spring Break and we absolutely loved it!! My husband and I loved what a great bargain this place is! The Pirate Haus Inn is in a fabulous location; it took us maybe 6-7 minutes to walk to the Castillo de San Marcos and the b&b is truly in the heart of the awesome things to see in Downtown Saint Augustine. We loved that free parking was available (it may test your Tetris skills) and we didn't have to use our car at all during our stay. The price point is exceptionally good, considering the high level of personalized hospitality and the comfortable rooms. The rooms are big and have the most adorable murals on the walls. The rooms may not look brand-new, but they are clean and very fun. Also a bonus: free wi-fi (although you'll be having so much fun exploring you won't want to check your email)! My son's favorite parts of the Pirate Haus Inn were the pirate pancakes (he loved that Cap'n Conrad put his name Gus on the pancake) and the great playroom full of fun pirate toys and books. It's a great place to relax and let your kids play during the heat of the day. Cap'n Conrad is a truly wonderful host and gives excellent advice on eateries and activities in the area. He even wrote a nice welcome note in Irish Gaelic for us (outside of the Gaeltacht I have NEVER had that lovely attention to detail). If you are coming to Saint Augustine with kids, you totally need to stay here! And even if you aren't coming with kids, you should probably stay here too!

I read the website and other reviews, but it was more of a hostel atmosphere than the "inn" that the name suggests. We did not meet Mr. Conrad, but frequently saw another gentleman whose name I did not catch for check in and breakfast. We stayed one night and for the money, location, and free parking, it was fine, but next time we will choose something a little more convenient for having multiple people in one party (we had 4). The bathroom is small and there is only that one mirror and limited outlets in the room, making it difficult for several people to get ready at once. The futon and bed were plenty comfortable. My toddler enjoyed the pirate toys while we waited for breakfast. We had an extensive and helpful guest guide in the room, but it would have been nice if the other guests actually read it or followed it. It says breakfast is between 7:30 and 9:30 and guests are welcome to cook their own, but need to do so outside of those hours. At 8 am no cooking was going on, pancakes or otherwise. The "inn" boasts all you can eat pancakes. The kitchen is rather small and becomes crowded quickly. And I guess the pancakes are made to order, so they are not started without being requested. We requested ours after 20 minutes of waiting and were given one serving before the staff left and other guests came in, started themselves a large breakfast (at 8:30) and then asked the staff not to cook anything else until they had gotten their own breakfast started. At this point there were 8 people in the little kitchen. We assumed we would have to go elsewhere for a more filling breakfast since the other guests were so intrusive until the staff offered us more. Then the other guests had to give up some of their cooking space. After breakfast we were required to wash our own dishes. It was my mother's birthday and we wanted something a little less like home for our vacation. All in all I think we prefer a less casual and hostel type place for our next stay in St. Augustine.

Stayed at the Pirate Haus Inn with my three school-aged boys over spring break. They loved the bunk beds in the Tree Room, the pirate pancakes, and the toys in the TV room. Being able to park the car for two days and just walk everywhere in St. Augustine was great. Upon check-in Conrad told us all the best activities and restaurants to take in, as well as those to avoid. Met several other families there. We plan to go again next year. Andy, age 9, says "The rooms are nice and I enjoyed staying there." Alex, age 9, says "The paintings on the walls are pretty and it is cool how Conrad makes pancakes with your name on them." Arthur, age 9, declined to comment, but you get the idea.

The Pirate Haus was great fun! If you like B&Bs but not a Victorian/Antique filled house, this may be the place for you. The staff makes you feel right at home. We even cooked our own pancakes one morning before the staff came in the kitchen and we had fun! If you want fancy, stay across the street at the expensive Hilton. If you're up for meeting some interesting people from around the world, join the crew at the Pirate Haus! Our only disappointment was not meeting Captain Conrad:( Arrrrr Matey!

We stayed at Pirate Haus the nights of 16 & 17 Feb. The room (#9) was perfect for our family (2 adults, 3 kids) and had great decor with maps and such. The kids loved the dorm like vibe with kitchen and living area down the hall. John, our host, was delightful and at hand for all questions/issues. There was one huge issue, however. Outside our window was a deck that was supposed to be off-limits after 10 pm. Other residents came home from being out at the bars and made it their hang-out---with not a care for noise control. From about one to three in the morning, it happened with 3 or 4 different parties and a huge light turns on when someone goes out there. After a sleepless second night, we decided to forego the next night (that we had already paid for). No compensation was offered.
I am very sorry for your experience. Unfortunately sometimes we have inconsiderate guests (they have been banned from staying here again!) who ignore the sign that the balcony is closed at 10PM. However they were here for only one night which we informed you so that the night you elected not to sleep here would have been a quiet one. I have toyed with the idea of fitting an alarm to that door, but I worry that it would further disturb guests who may be sleeping.

The Pirate Haus was a hoot. My daughter really enjoyed staying in the pirate room. Three special pirate books were left for her to read in the room and she enjoyed playing with all of the pirate toys in the common room. How thoughtful! Leave room for the pancakes made especially for each visitor. My husband enjoyed the opportunity to make his own pot of coffee. The location is right downtown, what more could you want? We loved the unique decorations and look forward to another visit next year.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed in room 9 and it was definitely a good weekend! The whole room was very clean. I loved the bed, it was very cozy and warm! The pancakes were awesome too. I'm not a pancake person but those are some dang good pancakes! Haha. The only drawback for me was the shower. I'm not used to old faucets like that so each morning I was there it took me roughly 20 minutes to get the water not freezing or not burning hot but that's just because I am not used to it and didn't know what each knob was. Other than though, I was 100% satisfied. The location is great! And if you aren't leaving town, just going around downtown, getting blocked in isn't a big deal because you are walking distance to everything! I would definitely come back.

We had such a terrific time with the Pirate Room. It was so nice and large, with a mini fridge, and a very cool antique bathroom. The beds were sooo comfy and warm. Our 7 year old girl really enjoyed the bunk beds, and she had a very good time with us at breakfast meeting people, and eating yummy pirate pancakes. One had her name on it! The coffee was excellent too. In the main room area you could go online, plus it had pirate ship toys and games for her and others to play with as well. Everyone was so polite, and it was very cool to talk to the other customers there about their travels as well. I would stay there every time. It's in the heart of the area...most excellent. I absolutely love the PIrate Haus. I lived in St Augustine for 7 years and had always walked past it.. my friend visited and booked a room and I actually ended up staying with him in the Map Room and having a blast.. flash forward 3 years.. I no longer live in St Augustine but still have friends in the areas.. so when it came to choosing a place to stay when I visited, the Pirate Haus won out even over the offer of a free couch. The rooms are fun, beds comfy, showers warm.. and the coolest part is the people you meet in the common area and in the mornings near the kitchen. I absolutely love this place and I fully intend on wearing out my welcome :) My 3rd stay (2nd in the same month!) is coming up in a week and I couldn't be more excited.

This was the first time we had stayed at the Pirate Haus Inn. (Also the first time in a hostel) We weren't sure what to expect. After all, the place was smack dab in the middle of the historic district. Plus the prices were so inexpensive. (We paid 75.00 a night for a private room, during the week.) What a PLEASANT surprise!! We were greeted by Conrad (The captain) at check-in. Not only, was he friendly, he took the time to give us a map and tell us what to go see and what to stay away from. This place is incredibly kid friendly too! (All kids love pirates) Every morning there's free freshly made pancakes and coffee. YUMMY!!! You just can't beat 'em! Perhaps there are fancier places in the area, but you're going to pay a heck of a lot more than $75 a night. We loved our stay and will be visiting our new friend, Captain Conrad at Pirate Haus again! Thanks for a GREAT time!! Bruce and Sue Karcher

We stayed 31 Oct 211 and found it just what we wanted. Room - we stayed in a very large room with on Suite - excellent value Service - though there was problem in getting parking the chaps on duty did all they could to help and it was sorted. Everyone very friendly and helpful. - excellent Value - as we travelled around Florida after staying in the Pirate Haus it made us realise really what good value the place was. Cleaniness - place was lovely and clean. I'm very fussy when it comes to bathrooms and ours was clean - yes a little old fashioned but everything worked and it was spotless. Dining - what can we say pancakes for breakfast and coffee/tea as much as we could eat/drink outstanding Really glad we found this place before we arrive in the US it gave us a wonderful start to our holiday. Thank you

I am the adventurous type so I didn't mind the shabby bedspread, worn out bed, inadequate ceiling fan, tacky fish on the way, or the dilapidated carpet. I really enjoyed my stay, however, my wife hated it. I liked it because it was cheap and was walking distance to all the attractions. She hated it and couldn't wait to get out of there in the morning. So, I didn't get any "gluten free" pancakes. I really love my gluten, so I can't say I would have partaken anyway. I'd stay there again, unfortunately I'll be single if I do.
Oddly enough the review right before this one were the folks in the room before you. It just shows you can't please everyone. Worn out bed? That's a Sealy Pillowtop, with a memory foam topper. it's softer than some of our other beds because of the memory foam, and I guarantee you that it is not worn out. But I understand Goldilocks ie. This bed is too soft, this one too hard, etc. I would love to get the select comfort beds, but at $2000 apiece, it's not going to happen unless we double our rates. Sorry about the comforter you must have been the last couple to use it as we replaced it about 4 days later We offer gluten free pancakes to those with celiac disease, our regular pancakes are chockful of scrumdillyumptious gluten. We don't do luxury which I think your wife is accustomed to.

In town 2 nights for a wedding with friends. You can't beat the deal and "pirate haus" was the main topic of most discussions over the weekend. It was entertaining all around. Only slight complaint maybe was that room 11 was a bit warm, so we opened the window and the trash trucks were rampant/loud 5AM and 7:30AM. I would stay here again and recommend to everyone.
Thanks for staying with us and taking the time to write a review! This time of year is usually colder, so we may have had the heat on, sorry for that. One word to a staff member and we can switch it to AC. I will look into getting better thermostats which are more automated, the ones we currently have force us to choose between AC or heat...

We had a very nice couple days staying at The Pirate Haus Inn in the old section of St. Augustine. It has a perfect location close to Flagler College and the Mantanzas River. Once we parked our car(no charge for parking), we didn't need to drive until we left. Friendly, helpful staff who cook individually-styled pancakes for guests' breakfasts. The room was quiet and comfortable with a mini-fridge. THe best thing was the price, which at $75 a night was way, way cheaper than anything in the same downtown area. THe only places we could afford previously were far away and required a lot of driving or using the trolley, which quits running around 7 or 8 pm. The Pirate Haus really met our needs. Thank you for staying with us and for writing a review! We've been trying to keep it affordable for couples and families for the 8 years that we've been here.

Every year my family makes a trek from Orlando to St. Augustine to see the "City of Lights"...it puts us in the Christmas spirit. This year we invited a friend and her daughter and it was almost like seeing the "Pirate Haus" for the first time all over again. The entry way grabbed her and enchanted her with the pirate sayings that roll up the steps and the rooms were beyond her expectations! I was worried that Conrad was not on site to make the famous "name" pancakes, but Nate exceeded our expectations!!! I must say that Nate is a great addition to the "Pirate Haus". The location of the "Pirate Haus" is an incredible asset, but also the fact that a family can stay here and not spend a fortune is important. I love staying at the "Pirate Haus" and plan on returning next year.

This year marks our family's second trip to the oldest city in America; St. Augustine FL. This also is the second time we have stayed at the Pirate Haus, which offers an inexpensive themed place to sleep while you enjoy your visit to this great historical city. The kids love the pirate theme of the rooms, and of course, they also love the FREE pancake breakfast available to them in the mornings. Parking in the city is limited, as it is with the Inn, but you do get one of five reserved spots if you rent one of the family rooms. If you plan to bring two cars, plan ahead for alternate places to park. If we have the opportunity to visit again in the future, The Pirate Haus is sure to be on our list for a place to rest our weary bodies. Additionally, the Inn is located near plenty of attractions within walking distance, or you can get tram tickets to get around town.

My family (husband, sons aged 11, 8 & 6) had a fantastic time at the Pirate Haus this past Thanksgiving (2011). We are used to traveling overseas and staying in hostels. If you are looking for a "hotel" you will be disappointed. But, if you are looking for a clean place, with comfortable beds and a pancake breakfast, then this is the place. We met interesting people from various parts of the country, including other families. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. They suggested visiting places that we hadn't considered seeing (like the Pirate Museum). This made our experience a little richer. The location was phenomenal. We walked to most of the attractions that we wanted to see. Parking was a little crazy - but it was free. So we didn't complain when we got blocked in for the night by another car. We just changed our plans. Need to go with the flow. We will definitely return to St. Augustine - so much to do there and we will definitely stay at the Pirate Haus again!! It is truly the best deal in town.
Thanks for choosing us and for your review! I always found it odd that in the UK, B & B's were cheap and motels were expensive! I have tried to model the Pirate Haus Inn after some of the hostels and B&B's I've stayed at overseas. We usually ask our guests who block other guests cars in that they leave a spare key with us so that we can move it if necessary. Most of the time it works fine, but we do point out that it's free, as opposed to the extra ~$20 they charge at the Hilton next door!

I would reccomend Pirate Haus to the the younger, thrifty crowd. A bed, A bathroom, free WiFi and a simple breakfast. The bed - more comfortable than the one I have at home!
Thank you for staying with us! Please note we cater to the older thrifty crowd too!

A good many years ago Sandy and i were travelers and made frequent use of Youth Hostels around the world. Pirate Haus brought back a lot of fond memories but at the same time had updated facilities that we appreciated in this day and our age!
Thanks for staying with us. We have the hostel/dorm facilities available for groups and independent travelers as well as the private rooms for couples and families. I make breakfast everyday so I can hear everyone's stories!

My girlfriend and I very much enjoyed our stay. I noticed that the bed and the pillows were very comfortable. The cast was nice!
Thanks for your review! Over time, pillows and mattresses compress and we just need to know so that we can continue to take care of our friends.

very noisy area. the pirate crew did their best to curb the shenanigans but no sleep to be had. its the same in any hotel on that strip. just a noisy area. Very cool place though.
Hmmm, you must have had a room facing the street, which on a weekend can be noisy. For that reason we stock free earplugs at the front desk. The Hilton across the street from us has the same problem, as do many of the B&B's in town. Thanks for staying!

My boyfriend and I went to St. Augustine for a wedding. We made reservations last minute and could not get a private room. We were a little nervous about a dorm room situation, but it was better than I expected. We had the best time talking with Captain Conrad and he gave us all the insider information about the area. Some of the best entertainment of the entire trip was eating our really awesome pirate pancakes. I would absolutely stay there anytime I am in the area because of the amazing staff. Thank you for a great weekend!!!!!!
I'm glad you had a pleasant stay! A lot of people get confused about our 'dorm' rooms. It's just another option to stay for less in the downtown area. Sometimes families with lots of kids or girl scout groups rent one of the dorms, but more often than not it's the single backpacker from all over, but mostly Europe. Sometimes I think about converting them into private rooms, but I'd miss the backpacker element, they add a lot of diversity to the conversations at the breakfast table! If you're lucky, you might get a whole room to yourself for $20 downtown! Thanks for staying and I hope to see you guys back again!

We have stayed here several times and are always very pleased. My favorite part is talking to people from all around the world about their travels. This time we met a lady finishing up a 2000 mile bike trip, a family from Australia and learned how to spend the night at the top of an Egyptian pyramid. Where else could you hear such things!
On our Facebook site I've taken to posting the nationalities of the people at breakfast, it's been an amazing variety lately! Also if you 'Like' us on Facebook, we put the last minute deals on there, so if you can get away at short notice....

My family had stayed at the Pirate Haus every year in October for several years. We have always been treated well and the rooms are great for a large family. This year 6 of us stayed in the pirate room. We liked the addition of central air and new windows, the place is looking good. We love the location of the Inn, we can park in their lot and walk to everything. In St. Augustine this is a big perk since parking can be a problem and expensive. It is also close to great restaurants.
It's always nice to greet familiar faces. In your review you indicate that their are areas for improvement. Please let us know what they are so we can attempt to make the extra effort to improve! Thank you for choosing us! Cap'n conrad

I was first drawn to Pirate Haus by its value. Was looking for a cozy B&B since it seems the way to go in the historic setting of St Aug (vs chain hotels). It may not be the only B&B in that prime downtown location (around St. George Street), but I have checked every other B&B in that area and they all charge at least twice the price of Pirate Haus. Next I was concerned about the cleanliness - judging from the reviews it doesn't seem to be a problem, and with it being a 100 year old house, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect sparkling faucets etc you'd see/ expect at Hilton. What I thought was "old is fine, as long as it's clean" -- and it was exactly that. Kudos for keeping the rooms as clean as 100 year old rooms can be! Then of course the room themes were very unique - we stayed in the Jungle Room (room 6) and it was exactly as you see it in the photos. Very colourful, thoughtfully matched furniture and decorations. I loved the magazine photos glued all over the bathroom wall, you can tell that a lot of time and effort was put into it. Finally the pirate pancakes sealed the deal for me, and I was pleasantly surprised at the effort Captain took to write Chinese on my pancake! (See pic) On the last day you get chocolate chips in them :D Free parking was great. The Captain even let us leave our car there for the day after we checked out. Some reviewers here seem to not grasp the idea of "downtown parking is rarely free". Can't emphasize enough that St Aug is mainly a walking town and it cannot be more convenient to drop off the stuff we bought back at the inn from time to time. Thanks again Captain, we had a really nice stay!
Thanks for choosing us and telling it like it is! Part of the reason we're less expensive is that we don't offer a 3-course breakfast. We offer a basic filling breakfast, but we have so many good restaurants around here that we thought we'd offer the choice, if folks want to pay more for a 3 course breakfast they have the option at numerous places within walking distance. Again, thank you for staying with us it was a pleasure having you guys, and I love your Chinese name!

It should be known that room #6 is haunted, and prevents you from sleeping!
hmmm, We usually rate higher on service. Can you please call us or email us with specific comments relating to your experience at the Pirate Haus. We are constantly trying to improve and it's hard without specifics. Regarding the haunting, I have had a firm talking to with the spirits in Room 6 and they denied it was their fault. was it anything in particular?

Just dang awesome is all that can be said for The Pirate Haus Inn. My family and me love this place we cant stop going back, the staff is super friendly the private rooms are huge and keep the kids happy and the pirate pancakes in the morning just make you want to wake up faster to get some
Sweet! Thank you for letting me know! I've been at this for 8 years and I do try my best to make it the most affordable place in town.

The rooms, service and cleanliness met my expectations. The parking situation was difficult as space is extremely limited nad cars must be stacked two deep. Leave your keys at the desk (if it isd open, which it is not most hours of the day), otherwise you'll get a phone call to move your car if it is blocking someone. Down St. Augustine is extremely tight and that is the reason for the difficulty.
I try as hard as possible to let everyone know that our parking situation can be difficult if everyone is not considerate of everyone else. However parking is FREE. Monterey Inn - extra $7, Hilton across the street - extra $21. We don't have someone at the desk at all times because it's an added labor cost for which I would have to raise my rates. However there is a free phone in the hallway and all you have to do is call. If anyone reading this has a better suggestion, I am more than willing to give it a try. Please contact us!

An amazing value for a safe, comfortable, and interesting place to stay. I was by myself, so I appreciated the interaction with the other guests and staff (who went out of their way to be helpful). The location right in the middle of everything was the best part, anything you'd want to see is just around the corner. I understand why all the kids love this place, and I'm already planning my next visit.
Thanks for your review and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay!

beds and pillows too hard to sleep on. could not stay our second night because my back was so sore. even though we were very uncomfortable we were not given our money back for the night we didn't stay. customer satisfaction is not top priority here. kitchen was messy and someone's basket of laundry was sitting on the floor in there so we chose not to have breakfast. No outlets in the bathroom so couldn't dry hair or use flat iron. we would not recommend this to people who need a comfortable bed, care about cleanliness or have female traveling companions who need to do their hair. do not book in advance online because if you are dissatisfied in any way with the accommodations you will be refused a refund.
The guests before you in that room blame the bed because it was so comfortable it made them want to sleep in every day. Customer satisfaction is a top priority but you booked over labor day weekend which is a busy time for us. Our cancellation policy is clearly spelled out in the confirmation you received. The following day I offered you a choice of rooms with other beds you could try, but your refused. We also have a large selection of pillows in our supply area and all you had to do was ask for another. There is another mirror in the room close to an outlet. Our dryer is in the kitchen so it's not surprising there was a basket of laundry there, sometimes our guests ask us to do laundry and it's a service we offer. The only reason I refused a refund is that you attempted to blackmail me on Trip Advisor and on this site as well. I don't respond too well to that.

Warm greeting, friendly staff, smiles from everyone. Great location, free parking. I have never stayed at a place like yours. I really liked meeting other people and having conversations. That was really cool. I loved the Pirates movies. Loved the coffee!! The kids loved the pirate toys!!
Aye, I always wanted my place to be different, a kind of place where I would feel comfortable. It's not for everybody because I know I can't please everybody. I strive to have a place that's clean and affordable for most folks. I overheard some folks this morning on the phone talking about how they were glad to have found a hospitable place downtown which 'fit in their budget'. I like good coffee so that's what I buy and we make it European strong, well, not Italian strong as the Italians tell me!

It was my first time staying in a B & B and I can't wait to do it again. It was quite an adventure. My girls and I had a blast. You guys are great!
Well we're not your usual B&B which was why I hesitated getting a listing on B&B.com for so long, but I try to explain that to make sure people are not disappointed when they arrive (ie. that they don't expect a gourmet 4-course breakfast, and lots of doilies and antiques). 'Twarms me heart to know that y'all had such a good time here.

Kids orientated with pirate themes . 'Does exactly what it says on the tin '. Not for people that like - impersonal corporate hospitality from big chains. Nice touches like books on arrival for kids, pancakes with names on and a good old fashioned games room. great location for St Aug. Would stay again.
thanks for your kind review. you gave us a 3/5 on the rooms. Please contact us via email (ahoymatey at piratehaus.com) and tell us how you would make them better. I'm always open to suggestions, it's how we make improvements!

The Pirate Haus is right in the center of all the action in St. Augustine. Those looking to enjoy the various restaurants, bars, shops, and tourist attractions can't go wrong with the Pirate Haus. This B and B is a great value for the area and the friendly and helpful staff make you stay very pleasant. Definitely a must if you are traveling with kids as they will enjoy the theming, especially the common play room. The pirate pancakes are great in the morning as well.
Thank you for your review and thank you for choosing us. We strive to make not only your stay here a good value, but to provide you with enough information so that your stay in town is a good value too!

We stayed 2 nights in the Jungle Room. The room was great and very clean. We were afraid at one point when we realized the air conditioning engines for the entire floor was actually based in a closet ... in the room, but we could nevertheless sleep well. Possible enhancements: "make shade" for more of the sitting outside: in the kitchen there are only 4 chairs so when everyone gathers at the same time for breakfast it gets crowdy and you cannot have your children eat breakfast in the already hot sun or standing up... Friendly innkeepers! Note that "Dining" is a not applicable rating since there is no "Dining" there, but a kitchen you may use.
Actually there are two air handlers for the floor, one on each end of the building. Actually there are 5 normal chairs in the kitchen and we do have a couple of folding chairs in case of large families. But you're right, if everyone shows up at the same time and wants to eat inside, well we just don't have the room to handle it. We do have a large umbrella for shade outside, we've had it for 3-4 months. Did you stay before that? Thank you for staying with us!

This was a repeat visit for us...but we brought family who was visiting from Kentucky so they could enjoy all the St. Augustine AND the Pirate Haus has to offer! We of course were not disappointed :) Thanks to Capt. Conrad and his crew for a lovely stay, and the discount dinner coupon as well as the ALWAYS awesome pancake breakfast! We will definitely be back!

I was very impressed with the Pirate Haus. We stayed in the Pirate Room. The place was very clean and more quiet than many name brand hotels I have stayed in. I HIGHLY recommend staying there and I will be back!
Aye, the Pirate Room is on the backside where we were able to put new windows in without the Hysteric Architecture Review Board giving us grief! Thank you for your stay!

I love the Pirate Haus. It's in the middle of the downtown area, an easy walk from many of the attractions. Conrad (the owner) is super-friendly and makes unlimited pancakes for breakfast each morning in the kitchen area, which you can use if you want to save a little money by making your own meals occasionally instead of eating out all of the time. As the name indicates, it's got a pirate theme, with lots of pirate kitsch scattered around, and a TV/game room with lots of toys that kids can hang out in. You see a lot of the other guests with the kitchen and TV/game room. Great price for the location. Rooms aren't anything fancy, but who cares? Fun place.
Thanks for your review. There are a lot of upgrades I would make if I owned the building, but alas I don't. So I always have to weigh making changes against having to raise prices to recoup the cost. I resist making major changes in favor of having the best value in the Downtown area so that teachers, firemen, policemen etc can stay in the center of town without having to fork over a mortgage payment! Thanks for your kind words and your stay!

Loved this place, no frills but plenty of atmosphere and charm. Captain Conrad and his first mate were extremely accomodating even when we were late for pancakes! The staircase was tops and my 7 year old loved the common room. The location is perfect for wandering St. Augustine. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
I know parents sometimes get a little frustrated when their kids don't want to visit the fort but would rather stay in the common room and play with the toys, but in my head I do a little fist pump and say "Yesssss!!"

My family of three, two adults and a small child, stayed in the fish room. It was very nice. The staff was super nice and gave the "what to do and what not to do" of Saint Augustine. We have had friends stay here in the past, and they had great reviews. We would definitely be back, considering the price, location to everything down town (we didn't use our car the whole time we stayed there because everything was within walking distance), plus the staff was amazing (we checked in a little late and they told us we could just take care of it in the morning). My son loved the whole pirate theme too! We will be staying here again & probably the one in the Keys also! :-)

The service here is what really sets it apart - that and the pirates. Everyone's very friendly, but not a sickly obsequious friendly, just laid back, helpful and funny. The breakfast is great, the common room is fun, and the place itself is walking distance to everything, whether you want sightseeing, ice cream or wine. It's all there!
4.6 on June 03, 2011
When you first check-in it's obvious that Conrad and his manager are hospitality people, not just schmo's working a 9-5 job who could care less. We got a map tour of St. Augustine with all the details which made our trip GREAT! No bad meals, no wasted money on cheesy tourist traps etc. The parking situation was a bit cramped, but with the location, we didn't even need our car so we parked it forward and got blocked in, but it was free. We won't be staying at the Monterey Inn again ($8 for parking on top of mediocre moldy rooms). And the coffee was great, good n strong - European style. Pancakes were awesome, and I'm not a huge pancake fan, but we ate them one day, and what company! Students from France, a Danish IT guy attending a seminar, and a German female police inspector - GREAT conversations and hopefully a place to stay on our next European trip! Apparently the Pirate Haus has a very good international reputation. We opted for breakfast out the last day. Again, location! 5 or more breakfast spots in a two block radius. OK, the rest...comfy beds, lots of pillows in the rooms so we could pick and choose (I prefer a flatter pillow), clean where it mattered (some dusty corners, but we didn't spend much time in the corners!), hot water in the shower and lots of it (be careful though, if left just hot it is too hot!) We like normal B&B's for a splurge, but the Pirate Haus is SO not normal ( a good thing!), no antiques!! Yay!! Most B&B's are full of antiques which just add to the price, you can't take 'em with you so what does it matter? I just wish there were more Pirate Hauses in the other cities we travel to..then again maybe we just haven't found them yet.
We do have a good international reputation as well as a domestic one! As you noted, my target audience is not the wealthy who prefer fancier places and lots of hidden costs (resort fee anyone?) but rather those traveling on a budget who want to stay in a comfortable place that feels like home. Most other places you're just another client in one of many rooms. Here we only have 5 rooms and I like to meet everyone. For some reason we attract a lot of dust but we work to keep it under control. If in the future you notice anything...anything at all, please let us know and we'll do our best to fix it. I've thought of expanding to other cities, but that would be too much like work!! At present I love what I do! Thanks for your stay and your review.

We got a little lost on our way into St. Augustine and called Chris to tell him we were 2 hours away, every 2 hours, 3 different times. He was so nice and stayed up to wait on our arrival. We finally arrived at 3 a.m. The room was huge and very homey. We don't have kids but if we did there would have been plenty of room for them. The parking is cramped but everything else is superb! Would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone! thanks so much for a wonderful experience.
Thank you for choosing the Pirate Haus. The parking is cramped but it's free, a bonus in this small town not designed for cars!

We had a very nice stay. If you are looking for pristine, perfectly manicured/upkept, modern amenities then you are at the wrong place. Of course, to have the location (walking distance to EVERYTHING you'd want to see in St. Augustine) and those types of amenities you'd pay 2x-3x of what you pay here. The pancake breakfast (free!) was great, and the service is outstanding. The neatest thing about staying here is that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE else staying here is just so different than if you'd stay in a normal hotel. Friendly is the word I'd use - people are more relaxed, nicer, and you sort of feel like you are in a special "club" while staying here. The staff is nice but not annoying, and they really tell you from experience the places to go and to avoid - this was crucial when it came to making dining decisions, and we would have made some costly errors if we hadn't listened to Chris' advice. We discovered some true gems while dining out and just had a wonderful time. We'll be back, and we'll stay again at the Pirate Haus - yarrrrrrrrrr!

We visited to do some sightseeing. The Pirate Haus is family friendly. There is a common room with internet, tv/movies, toys, games and big comfy couches. The kitchen is available for visitors use. We stayed in the Map Room. It was spacious and clean (and fun!). The staff are super helpful and knowledgeable about St. Augustine. They gave us great dining and sightseeing recommendations. The Inn is located in the heart of St. Augustine. We parked our car, and we didn't drive it again until we were headed home.

I got a bit lost in trying to find this place because the city requires historic signs (i.e. small). Other than that I enjoyed staying in the map room with my friends. Only slight downside was the loud hallway. Hardwood floors are known to bounce sounds vs carpet absorbing them. Nothing a pair of earplugs couldn't fix.

We went to St. Augustine for a "pirate adventure" and The Pirate Haus Inn was the perfect place to stay. Conrad and Chris were wonderful hosts ... the "pirate" pancake breakfast was so much fun, as they made individual pirate pancakes for the kids. When we return to St. Augustine we will definately return to The Pirate Haus Inn and highly recommend it to anyone wanting a little getaway.

This was our fourth time to stay at the Pirate Haus over the years. Last time was several years ago...this time it was cleaner and in better condition than ever. It's not luxurious, but with new windows and central AC, it's a lot more comfortable and feels more like a real hotel...but with personality! We just love the feeling there. The free pancakes in the morning, and always some traveler or family to share stories with; that's what makes it so much better than a hotel where you are sealed up in your own little world. But at half the price of a bed and breakfast (or more...), this is a place my family can afford. The best part is being so central to all the city has to offer, in walking distance to everything, and easy driving to the beaches. Free parking, friendly, helpful staff. Love every minute of it!

We really enjoyed our stay at "The Pirate Haus" for location and value it can not be beat. The inn is quirky, unique and a HUGE hit with my kids. The staff seems to really enjoy what they do and it shows. They really go above and beyond to make the guest feel comfortable , yet always with a laid back feel. If the kids are playing loudly and making a mess , Mr Conrad just joins in:) It is like being a guest at the home of an amazing host .

I did like the decor and pirate theme to the rooms but the bed was extremely uncomfortable to sleep in. And unfortunately, the noise on the street was pretty unbearable until after 3am which I'm assuming is from people leaving the bars. Obviously that is nothing you can change but it didn't make for a good nights sleep.
We've changed the mattress in that room and have not had any new complaints. We do have a mattress or two on hand so that if one is uncomfortable, you just have to let us know and we can change it (Try that at another hotel!) We do provide earplugs for either street noise or a partner who snores! Unfortunately we could only change out the windows on the backside of the building. Due to the Hysteric Preservation Board we cannot change the windows in the front and thus they are still single pane un-insulated.

We had a wonderful time at the Pirate Haus. This was our second stay. It is affordable, quirky, and right in the middle of all the activity. We love that we can park the car and not get back in it until we leave. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Our bathroom did look a bit ragged and needed some elbow grease in the tub. That is the only negative from this stay.

Located in the heart of St. Augustine, FL the convenience of being in middle of everything without paying a hundreds of dollars is invaluable . We walked everywhere! We had been there about 9 years prior and stayed again for just 1 night. You can't beat the location - just steps from St. George Street. Linens and bathroom are clean, but things like baseboards, inside closets, etc. are icky. Innkeeper gave us awesome information on where to go and where not to go. Even with some peeling paint, it's worth staying here. The place has character and a very welcoming attitude and even the teenagers love the Pirate Pancakes in the morning!

This is the second time we visited the Pirate Haus Inn and the stay was everything it was supposed to be and more. The staff was awesome! My wife and I brought my two sons ages 11 and 3 and both boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The little one really enjoyed playing with all the pirate themed toys on hand and the older one got into the action too and they both liked the Pancakes in the morning. The Pirate Haus Inn is an awesome place to stay in St Augustine. Its location is superb, its right in the middle of everything! Walking distance to St George Street, Castillo de San Marcos and everything in between! The only negative thing we had was the lack of air. They said they had central a/c but we didn't feel it at all. The rooms got a little stuffy so we had to open the windows. We also ended up buying a small fan to run at night to help keep us a little cooler. Even so, it was still pretty warm. Also, we went in mid March, I can only imagine it would be hotter in the summer!

This is our 4th stay at the Pirate Haus and it was wonderful as usual. The only issue may be the noise level in the middle of the night if you have little children. Not bad but people tend to come in at all hours and not quietly. The pancake breakfast is amazing. Conrad, the Innkeeper is really nice and accomadating. I would highly recommend this place. So close to the heart of the historic district, great pricing, and a great atmosphere.

We were worried the place was gonna be a bit "cheesey" Very very happy we were WRONG!!!! Chris was amazing and answered all our questions no matter how off the wall! Great place for families cant wait to go back with our kids, and yet was the perfect couples get away too. Our bed was very comfy and the sheets very soft, the bath towels were a little skimpy but did the job. While you could hear some noise from the hallway, its an old building, everyone was respectful during quiet time and we heard no noise from outside. The pancake breakfast was pancakes, although I am sure the kids will love the funny shapes. All in all for the price and location we couldn't have asked for more!

Our most relaxing room during our winter break vacation was at the Pirate Haus. Original and cleverly decorated, as well as large & clean, our room was a comfortable retreat. The breakfast pancakes were taken to a level of artistry and fun that we plan to try at home! Two computers and a tv in a second common room provided our travel technology fixes. The Innkeeper and his staff were the kindest, most accommodating group I've ever encountered in the hospitality business.

We were given so many wonderful suggestions of things to do, places to go and great food to eat by the friendly pirates and Captain Conrad, we hardly had time to be in our room. Staying here was the perfect spot. Central to everything. Affordable with parking! Loved it!

This was the third of fourth time I've stayed here... always a pleasure. Conrad and the staff are great and the rooms are creative and pleasant. This was the first time we stayed in a 'family' room rather than one of the dorm-style rooms. For two of us, the one room was a little more than we expected to pay, but if you are accompanied by some friends or children, the value increases. Great location and wonderful pirate pancakes in the morning. I highly recommend that everyone give the Pirate Haus a try. :)

The location was excellent, and the decor was unique which was fun to explore. The bathroom was not as clean as I would have liked, but based on the price, it was acceptable. The major issue with our visit was that we were disciplined by the reception dude for using the word "pissed". We did not curse, but were definitely made to feel like having fun may get us kicked out of the inn. Overall - we had a great trip, but it was definitely hindered by our paranoria about ending up sleeping in our car for using questionable language!

Our second stay at Pirate Haus. We are planning to bring the whole family with us soon for a third stay there. Fun, great value and a terrific location!

We stayed at the Pirate Haus last year and it was the one place we chose to return to this year. Great hosts, and comfortable and fun rooms.

Si no buscas grandes lujos és muy recomendable. Destacaria la ubicació, la simpatia de sus propietarios i el precio. Desayuno muy pobre y las habitaciones... no se... especiales.

My family and I had our second stay at the Pirate Haus. Our boys ages 9 & 10 love to stay there and visit St. Augustine. Christmastime is a wonderful time of year to go. We enjoyed getting to know some of the other families and guests. It's a neat experience to stay there and is close to everything. Will be back again in the future.

The staff, Chris and Conrad, make this place. It is truly like staying at a friend's or family member's place. It's not quite a B&B, not quite a hostel, but both can apply, depending on which accommodation you've booked. We stayed in the Map Room, which more than comfortably accommodated me, my wife and 7-year-old. In fact, with bunkbeds, there was room for five, AND a pullaway bed in the closet makes six. The pancake and coffee breakfast was great; if you want something else, there is a mini-fridge in the room, and a larger one in the inn's eat-in kitchen; also a small microwave there. More highlights: AMAZING location; simply cannot be beat. HOT WATER in the bath; some places you just never know till you get there. AFFABLE and very well-traveled, knowledgeable staff. Super friendly but also respect your privacy. FREE WI-FI AND COMPUTER ACCESS in the living room. Also a great assortment of pirate toys there!! MUCH, MUCH MORE! In the interest of full disclosure, there are two problem areas. If you have mobility issues, there is a serious staircase to climb when you first enter the inn. Second, parking is TOUGH in the historic area of St. Augustine, so if one of their five fairly compact parking spaces is not available, you might best be advised to pay the 8 bucks for parking at the Wachovia lit next door. But the staff works VERY HARD to get you into one of their free spots. (we were driving a minivan and were able to get a free spot three days out of five. I suspect most could do better.) All in all, a fantastic stay, and I would give it my highest recommendation unless you are looking for luxury digs.

My wife, son, and I had an awesome time at the Pirate Haus Inn. Really nice, laid-back atmosphere and very kid-friendly. The rooms are a blast and the service is great and sincere. The pancakes rock! Will definitely be back next time we're in town.

I am so glad we found this place. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Once we parked, we never had to get in our car again. Everything was a short walk from this place. Perfect for kids who get restless hotels. Playroom was great! Staff was very helpful and friendly. You have access to a small fridge in the room and a large one in the kitchen. You can save lots on food by utilising the kitchen (if you need to). We WILL be back.

Rooms are very fun, especially if you have kids. They now have central air installed! I gave Service an "Outstanding" because the staff are extremely friendly and they went out of their way to find another family to stay in our place the first night of our stay when we were unable to make it in, thereby saving us the cost for that night. Rooms are very clean. Although no real "dining" - pancake breakfast and you clean up after yourself - we have gone both over mothers day and our anniversary, and the staff made a special pancake for my wife on both occassions with a hand picked flower to boot! Will definitely stay again in the future.

Great place to stay, my daughters loved it!! The themes are great, and the Captain and First Mate were so very nice and accomodating. Enjoy your family vacation here, worth every doubloon!

Very cool place to stay, especially for kids. No frills, so if you are looking for a fancy or luxury hotel, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a unique one of a kind inn with history then this is it. Very good value, large rooms, cool decor, and with most private rooms having two sets of bunk beds and a double bed, it is great for large families. Staff is real nice and even made us decorated pancakes in the morning. Every corner of this place has something interesting and different.

The Pirate Haus Inn is in an excellent location. We were able to walk to everywhere we wanted to go. Upon check-in, the staff gave us a map and went over the different locations, museums, etc. in the area. I love how they told us what was worth a visit and what was not. Because we had children they made sure we knew there was a playground in the area...it was awesome...we've never seen such a great play area. We stayed in the Jungle Room. The kids loved the theme and the bunk beds. I thought the bed was comfortable and the sheets smelled nice and clean. While the room is a nice size, I did notice there was not a chest of drawers. Not a big deal since we were there one night; however, I do like to unpack my bags so we don't have to dig around to find clothes. We joined other families in the morning for the pancake breakfast. Pancakes were delicious and little pieces of art. This was a nice time to get to know other people, where they're from, and where they're going. Thanks Pirate Haus.

We visited the Pirate Haus last weekend and had a wonderful time. Conrad and Chris were very nice and helpful. The pancake breakfast was wonderful! The kids loved the pirate bedtime storys, the top bunks, the atmosphere, and the pancakes. I woud definitely go back to the pirate haus again. The room was large and had a small fridge that I was not expecting to see. The bathroom was clean. The room itself was a bit dusty but it added to the piratey feel. I don't imagine that pirates did a lot of dusting. :) You walked out of the hotel into the heart of st augustine. You can walk all around teh old town easily. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay in the heart of st augustine and especially if you are traveling with children i would recommend this B & B.

I love the Pirate Haus - the people are the absolute best, and the decor is great fun!!! The down side - while the sheets and bathroom fixtures are clean. the moldings and chair rails need a major wipe-down for dust and (yes) stray hairs. The new exterior stucco, new deck, and new windows in the back rooms are all major recent improvements. I'm hoping for an upgrade to less squishy mattresses and new black-out-style drapes in the next refurishment. But put all this aside, because you will never find nicer or more helpful folks or a better location.

We came to St. Augustine for the Florida Heritage Book Fest and had written that on our reservation form. The staff took the time to put Saturday's schedule of events on the desk in our room. It was a wonderful welcome. Conrad and Chris were incredibly helpful and friendly. We enjoyed our stay tremendously and can't see staying anywhere else when fortune brings us back to St. Augustine.

My whole family loves this place the staff is always nice and super helpful. This is our 7th stay at the Pirate Haus and it’s never been a disappointment. Whether you stay in a dorm room or a private room the price can’t be beat considering where you’re at as it’s just a quick walk to many nearby restaurants and stores and in the middle of the historic district as well as just a quick drive to the beach.

Our six year old daughter adored staying at the The Pirate Haus Inn. She loved the bunk beds and had a ball in the common room. Her comment was that she wished she could stay there forever. My husband and I both thought that the price was great. The staff was very knowledgeable about St Augustine and you could tell that they really loved the city. Also, the pancakes were truly amazing – I have never seen anything like them.

The Pirate Haus is amazing! You can't find a better bargain in this city. The location is perfect-steps away from the bay, and walking distance to all the sights, shops, and restaurants. The rooms are HUGE, whimsically decorated, and can hold an entire family or large group of friends. There is free parking (very important in St. Augustine) a simple but hearty pancake breakfast, and friendly & helpful staff. I was lucky enough to visit the Pirate Haus twice for two girls' getaway weekends, and can't wait to visit again. (And try another themed room). I recommend this to all travelers, especially those looking for a fun, relaxed, and economical trip in the nation's oldest city.

My husband and I took our 3 grandchildren to the Pirate Haus for the night while traveling from Orlando. We have never stayed in a hostel before and wouldn"t do it again if it was the two of us alone but would visit here again with the grandkids. They enjoyed everything from the pirate toys to the pirate pancakes with their names on them.
