Great Sister's getaway

5 en junio 18, 2015

Four sisters experienced a wonderful weekend with Innkeeper Carolyn who we dearly deemed "house mother" for the getaway! With her gourmet breakfasts and wine and appetisers, we found it hard to get out of the comfort and charm of her lovely inn to experience the beautiful countryside. With great restaurants, shopping, and lovely walks right in the area, we were well enteretained and had a weekend to remember. Carolyn was even gracious enough to loan me an out of print book about the story of Robert E Lee's life, which I really appreciated. Very grateful to you Carolyn for such a lovely weekend with my Sisters! Karen Kovalick, Philadelphia

Rustic Elegance

I have never been to a Bed and Breakfast before, but I knew my wife wanted to go to one. Last weekend, for our 37th Wedding Anniversary, we stayed in our first. I thought that would be a nice surprise. After searching extensively for a small B&B and somewhat intimate, I found The Lord Fairfax Country House in Middleburg, Virginia. My wife knew nothing until we turned into the driveway of this beautiful little log home. She was enamored immediately with the house and its beautifully landscaped yard. If you have a chance, read the history behind it or allow your historian/innkeeper, Carolyn Smith, to tell it. She is filled with wonderful stories about the house and its history. Not only does she tell a riveting history of the house, but she also has quite a colorful background herself and is a very delightfully interesting lady. She doesn't impose on your privacy, We begged her to stay and chat. She also wants to get to know you. She also knows all the "goings on" in the area and her suggestions were super. The inside of the cabin has one king bedroom and a beautifully furnished living and dining room. Gorgeous antiques. We had happy hour with wine and beer plus some tasty table hors d'oeuvres. Breakfast followed a good night's sleep. It includes everything but the kitchen sink. Carolyn loves for her breakfasts to be served in the beautifully furnished dining room. It was the first time in our lives we actually had a "candle light" breakfast. After receiving our list of activities for the day from Carolyn, we were off (this time with hugs for our innkeeper). I want to thank Carolyn for respecting our privacy, being a wonderful innkeeper, and making sure our first experience in a B&B was outstanding. As we drove down the driveway on our way to enjoy the day, we took a picture of the cabin , and waved goodbye to our new found friend, Carolyn Smith. Stay there. You won't be disappointed. PS. Don't wait too late to make reservations.

A gem with a great story

Middleburg's hidden gem. I've tried every B&B in the area and this one has more character, history, and elegance than any others.

Memorable and Delightful

From the beginning to end, our stay at Lord Fairfax Country House fulfilled our expectations and more--a lovely setting in the rolling horse country, a unique experience, sleeping in Lord Fairfax's house, offering a very personal taste of history, with a delightful owner/innkeeper well-versed in all aspects of the life of the Middleburg area. She greeted us on the front steps and served as a perfect and very savvy hostess for our two-day stay. Our meals were served in the historic main dining room of the Fairfax house, from the breakfast of our choice (we chose the yummy French Toast) to a lovely candlelight dinner. The upstairs sleeping area gives one the feel of a 1700s house, but with the comforts and amenities expected of our time. Highly recommended!

Our welcoming to the Inn was friendly, professionally kept but with a relaxed atmosphere. The innkeeper made us feel very much at home. We truly enjoyed our stay with its impeccable service and its natural beauty of this charming historic place. we highly recommend it.

Gracious Living

Lodging at The Lord Fairfax Country House is the closest thing that one can do to experience the elegance and comfort of Eighteenth Century Virginia life without also enduring the privations and pestilence of those times. Although The Lord Fairfax house dates to the 1730s, it has been restored so as to preserve all of the original features while unobtrusively incorporating insulation, heating, cooling, electricity and plumbing...no chamber pot is required here! The Inn is located in the rolling hills of hunt country and is impeccably and comfortably furnished with exquisite taste. The hospitality of the Innkeeper is gracious and thoughtful without being intrusive, and no detail is left unattended. After only a few days, we felt as though we had travelled to a gracious and tranquil place far away in time. I recommend it without reservation (but, you should make a reservation).

I generally do not like B&Bs. The reason - forced interaction with other guests. No problem here. You are the only guests. Walking into a log house may raise a red flag, but the facade gives way to an elegant 18th century interior. The spacious living room and dining room share a fireplace. The lighting throughout is low and adds to the authenticity of the period. At the same time everything is formal, it is also comfortable and immaculate. The spacious bedroom upstairs has a huge king size bed. We were greeted by the proprietor, who immediately offered us a glass of wine. Since we know the area well, our conversation was mainly about how she could help make it most comfortable for us. Since our purpose for being there meant early morning departures, Carolyn Smith provided us with perfect breakfasts on each of the four mornings we were there. Our only regret was we did not get to use the fireplace because it was really too warm and by the time we returned each evening, we were too tired. I highly recommend this property. And, we plan to return on our annual visits to the area.

Utterly Charming, Historic and Unique

This private, but very charming bed and breakfast country house made for an unforgettable experience in the heart of horse country. I truly enjoyed my overnight stay at the Lord Fairfax, complete with cocktail hour and a hearty breakfast. The innkeeper is one of the most kind and thoughtful around, and made my stay even more remarkable by providing me information on nearby shopping and dining. This would make for a very romantic getaway in the future as well.

Unbelievably Romantic

I was very pleased and thrilled with how romantic and intimate the Lord Fairfax House is. It is a wonderful log house attached to the innkeepers home, but it has its own private entrance so it always felt like our own place. The interior decor is just the right combination of country elegance and casual comfort. Truly one of the nicest, and most private, weekend getaways I have ever enjoyed. Middleburg and the surounding countryside offer so much this time of year. Coming home to relax at the log house was the perfect compliment to a wondeful day of shopping and touring. I look forward to visiting again - hopefully when there is snow on the ground! Charles H

Unique Colonial Country Estate

A friend and I wanted to stay at The Lord Fairfax Country House because it's unique -- an historic 18th century log cabin with all modern conveniences in the heart of Virginia's horse country and vinyards. The impressive estate and its gracious, attentive hostess/owner, Carolyn Smith, exceeded our high expectations. We were struck at once by the contrast between the rustic exterior of the estate and the elegance of the furnishings within. The living room is cozy yet large enough to accommodate a beautifully restored grand piano. Lord Fairfax himself would have appreciated the fine period dining room furniture. Upstairs, we slept soundly in the spacious bedroom after days spent watching polo and tasting wine, followed by sunbathing around the swimming pool. The cleanliness was impeccable and the privacy was absolute. Carolyn's bountiful breakfast buffet featured a variety of breads and fresh local fruit. Relaxing over excellent coffee, we discussed with her how to make the best use of our time. Since she knows the hunt country and her neighbors well, her seasoned advice ensured that we did so. We'll return to The Lord Fairfax Country House soon.
