Gorgeous giant house in great neighborhood - a best kept secret

4,0 en agosto 13, 2014

This house was absolutely beautiful. They could seriously use a good photographer because the photos on their website do not to the house justice. The innkeeper Betty was very friendly (and quite witty). She was an excellent host – let us do our thing but was there if we needed anything. I don't agree with some of the reviews on here about cleanliness. This isn't a hotel, it's a bed and breakfast. You feel like you are staying at someone's house, so there's going to be a bit of dust here and there. When you walk in, you won't get wafts of bleach and sanitizer, as you do in hotels. And that's part of the whole point of staying at a B&B. I highly recommend staying with Betty – we had a great stay!

JHU Graduation stay

3,0 en junio 01, 2014

We stayed here for a graduation event. Owner was very accommodating--got up very early to provide us with a breakfast in time so we could make an early gate opening for the ceremony. She even offered a discount that she has for JHU associated people that I didn't know about when I made the reservation, saving me $70. Quite kind. The place is huge and very funky, a bit shabby and in need of some updates (they currently have it on the market, so this will probably not happen until the new owners come over).

Charming!

My husband and I met a couple of friends in Baltimore for Memorial Day weekend and we all decided to stay at 4 East Madison. Our hostess was so warm and gracious, the house is beautiful, and there's a free shuttle to Inner Harbor just a couple of blocks away. After breakfast on Sunday, we sat in the hard to enjoy the sun and play with her dogs (they don't roam the house or anything, but we are animal lovers and wanted to visit with them), and it was a lovely end to our visit.

Great Stay!

The owner of the Inn is absolutely wonderful! She treated us like family and was very helpful. We especially enjoyed the breakfast she made for us...french toast made with raisin toast and stuffed with apple butter..Yum!!

Wonderful time!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the inn Saturday night. We had a wonderful time chatting with Betty. She was a gracious host. The home is spectacular. Exquisite antiques, architecture and lavish rooms. Betty's blueberry pancakes were amazing. We would love to return!

A lovely old house in the heart of MT Vernon. The owner is very knowledgeable about the area. The rooms need updating

wonderful Inn, wonderful Inn keeper

5 en mayo 26, 2013

Had a wonderful stay at 4 East Madison, a great breakfast in a house that felt like a house, and a rather historical house at that, but big enough that even in public spaces gave a sense of privacy. The highlight was the warm and erudite attention from the owner, Betty. My only disapointment was that I found this place at the tail end of my travels to Baltimore.

There's no place like ...Betty's!!!!!!!

4,6 en mayo 14, 2013

As a MICA family, there is simply no better place to stay than 4 East Madison Inn. The Inn is close to MICA with great off street parking. Betty's hospitality is peerless!!!!! If you are looking for exceptional value close to MICA, look no further. An ample delicious breakfast was included. The inn itself was filled with period furnishings, which felt as if they were lovingly collected over many years. It wasn't like staying in a sterile hotel, as much as being warmly welcomed into someone's home. If you are even thinking (as we did a year ago) about sending your kid off to Baltimore or MICA to go to college, a stay at Betty's may cinch the deal. It is a real oasis of feeling safe and at home in the big city. Thank you so much for welcoming us into your home!!!!!!!!!!

My Stay At 4 East Madison Inn

4,0 en mayo 01, 2013

The house is spectacular and surprising with an rather unassuming entrance. My room was very nice and the bathroom was adequate. Betty, the owner, was very accomodating and her breakfasts were great. The ambiance was the best thing. The mansion is very old and is furnished in the same period. You can just imagine yourself descending the beautiful staircase with a pretty dress of the periodl. I had some very nice conversations with Betty and the other guests.

great evening at 4 East Madison Inn

My husband and I stayed here as part of a special birthday getaway. We chose it because it's in walking distance of the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and in an overall nice neighborhood. The owner is wonderful, and upgraded our room just because it was a special occasion! The room (and the whole house really) is beautiful and grand. Best of all was the conversation over the breakfast table, facilitated by our lovely hostess. We would definitely stay here again, and most certainly recommend it to others.

Tesser Well!

5 en marzo 06, 2013

4 East Madison is a magnificent inn where one enjoys the beauty and elegance of days gone by. Each room is decorated with fine antiques, lovely linens, needlepoint pillows, gracious lighting fixtures, comfortable chairs, and glorious beds. Add a marble fireplace, draperies, and writing desk! Amidst such finery there is a warm hospitality and the luxury of feeling right at home. Betty, the owner, is a Renaissance woman who is eager to share the history of the inn to a listening ear. Within walking distance one will find excellent restaurants, the Walters Gallery, dozens of historic landmarks. Tesser well into the past! You will love your stay. Diane G. Dennis

Convenient Baltimore Location

3,6 en septiembre 01, 2012

One should expect a 19th century home to be different from a modern hotel.. We had a slight problem finding the parking area (parking was included, unlike other facilities in the area) but the innkeeper, Betty, was available by cell phone to guide us. Some of the furniture in our room looked a bit worn but that was not a turn-off for this type if facility. The bathroom floor was rather worn and some fresh paint would have improved its appearance. We were offered breakfast at any time we wanted it on a Sunday morning and it was very good. The Inn is very close to a small park sorrounding Baltimore's Washington Monument with other historic buildings near by. A number of restaurants featuring various types of food were within eay walking

A Superb Visit

We stayed overnight & had an excellent experience. Betty, the innkeeper, gave us great advise on touring the inner harbor area. We will definitely stay there when we next visit Baltimore.

Dirty and sad

1,4 en junio 28, 2012

Do not stay at this home unless you don't mind sleeping in a dirty room. Mismatched sheets and towels, drab and probably dirty bedspread and shams, filthy rug beside the bed, no toilet paper in room (had to go into other rooms to find a roll). The owner talked about brides using the rooms before weddings -- I don't think even the bride of Frankenstein would be interested in staying in this place. Truly, it was just dirty and run down. The floor in our room had dust balls and a sock under the bed and a toenail...truly disgusting. The place should be condemned.

The inn is not clean. There is stuff stored all over the place. The sheets are synthetic. No soap, only chemically scented shower get, was provided.

Delightful and very welcoming B&B

3,8 en febrero 16, 2012

I stayed at the Inn during family weekend at MICA. Betty makes everyone feel at home and creates a friendly atmosphere in this charming 1850s house. The rooms are all different and each one has its own charm and feel. Double-glazed windows keep the street noise out. Breakfast is served family style at a communal table, although individual sitting is also available. Avoid the people who choose their own table. A very pleasant change from hotels. I highly recommend it.

Excellent experience

Very pleasant room. Cooked to order breakfast. Free parking in back with easy in and out access. Very good restaurants just a block away on Charles Street. Betty, the proprietor, was a delight. We plan on staying again. Jeff & Judy Reynolds, Davis, CA

A Night at the Opera

4,4 en noviembre 19, 2011

Besides just being a fantastic historic building, the inn is in the heart of Baltimore's Mount Vernon Cultural district close to Peabody Conservatory, museums, the Lyric Opera House and the Baltimore Symphony Hall. We had dinner at the inn and it was fantastic - great food, great service and very attentive to my allergy issue - we were able to easily walk the few blocks to the opera instead of enduring a crush of traffic and parking. This was our second stay at the inn and we had to leave very early in the morning to catch a train but breakfast was great on our previous visit. Betty and Sandy are wonderful hosts and welcome you like old friends.

Great Innkeeper

Betty was terrific. She met us in the parking area, got up early to make breakfast and spent time getting to know us. We left with a good night's sleep and some great advice.

One of the most wonderful places i have ever stayed

5 en septiembre 07, 2011

Betty is fabulous. She made my long weekend over Labor Day so much more enjoyable with her stories of Baltimore and the Inn history. You will not be disappointed by your stay at the 4 Inn Madison. Local restaurants a block away Louies Maria & Mt. Vernon Stable & Salon were great eating places. The statues and churches a block away made the feel of Balimore the stay wonderful.

Gay Pride Stay

5 en julio 26, 2011

It was a wonderful treat...we originally rented the room for my daughter and niece for the festival but her plans changed. We were so glad they did because my sister and I stayed. My only regret is that we were unable to eat dinner (too late) we arrived very late due to traffic it... was Gay Pride Weekend and we were unaware that parking was available with the room. Betty actually walked up the street to meet us and show us where to park. She was great...she gave us a history lesson on the house. Again my only regret is the amount of time we lost. Great visit and hope to stay again!

charming and historic B & B

5 en junio 09, 2011

The graciousness and period decoration of the townhouse set the tone as soon as I entered. The owner's welcome immediately gave the impression that I was entering a friend's home. The rooms were comfortable and had all the appropriate amenities. Besides the wonderful breakfasts - with excelent french press coffee - the Inn served delightful lunches on a side patio that felt like a secret garden in the middle of a major city. The location provided easy access to major points of interest. I would definitely recommend this Inn and stay again myself.

Fantastic Find!

Wonderfully romantic BnB, in an unbelievable location! Even if you never have a reason to stay, you have to take advantage of one of the best restaurants in the city at the attached "Feast at 4". Every entree on the menu delivers. Excellent service! Excellent value! We stayed here on our wedding night and will be booking our anniversary there as well.

A wonderful weekend in Baltimore

5 en mayo 04, 2010

My husband and I were looking for a charming place to stay for a weekend, in which we planned on going to a baseball game, seeing museums and the sights. This inn did not disappoint. It is unprepossessing from the street, but when we entered the house, we were pleasantly surprised. The public rooms are spacious and furnished in a tasteful Victorian manner. It also has a restaurant that is highly rated, although we didn't eat there. The proprietor, Betty, greeted us, and told us that since the inn wasn't full, she had upgraded our room at no extra charge (we had initially selected the least expensive room). The room was charming and overlooked a small park next door. It had a private bath. Betty cooked us breakfast in the morning, a delicious tomato-asparagus omelet, with banana bread and fruit. Everyone ate at one big table, so we met and chatted with the other guests. There are smaller tables, so I suppose if one wanted privacy, they could have it. We loved the location, right off Charles Street in the historic Mt Vernon district. We walked to several great restaurants, and the Walters Art Museum, which we highly recommend as well. We would definitely go back!
