We went to Piney Hill B&B looking to escape the stress of working at a very busy office. We loved the fact that it sits on a pristine location in rural Virginia. Both hosts master the art of being friendly and hospitable without ever taking away from the private moments we enjoy there. The atmosphere of our cottage was inviting, cozy and perfectly quiet. We relaxed from the moment we arrived, The unexpected presence of the friendly resident cats was an added plus. The breakfasts were delivered exactly at the time they were promised, to our door and they were delicious. We were also very close to the local attractions of Luray Caverns and Shenandoah National Park. And as a Scotch lover, I enjoyed a visit to the Copper Fox Distillery. also a short drive from there. All in all, we couldn't have done better anywhere else.
My husband and I visited for our 25th anniversary and everything was just perfect! We had a wonderful, relaxing stay plus visited attractions in the local area while we were there. The cottage was private and exceeded our expectations in every way! Thank you Janice, Dennis and Anna!
Our visit to Walden Hall was the most unique B&B experience that we have ever had! Instead of your typical stuffy B&B governed by cheery (or grumpy) retirees; Walden Hall provided a relaxed resort style atmosphere. The pros: -The details were amazing! Nightly turn down service, beautiful room designs, social happy hour, even artfully rolled Egyptian cotton towels in the gym. I could go on forever.. -More amenities than most large resorts! We spent hours by the saltwater pool, played billiards in “the club”, went fishing by the lake and stayed up late playing mrs pacman in the arcade! -Amazing Innkeepers! Evanne and Eric are probably the most thoughtful, caring and professional hosts that we have ever encountered. -Tons to do in the area! We had a lovely evening at Its about Thyme toured a local distillery and took a short drive up to Ducard Vineyards to sit and relax with some good wine. -Amazing breakfast experience! The meals are locally sourced, simple yet elegant and utterly delicious. We ate on the front porch and watched the birds fly around the gardens before taking a walk around the pond. The light classical music outside was an excellent touch! The cons: -We did not have time to use the fire pit or the theater! We will have to stay again for more than two nights so we can try to do a little of everything. We will be back very soon and will be bringing our friends! Thank you so much for your hospitality and congratulations on your success!
Peaceful, beautiful location coupled with well-appointed cottages, outstanding breakfasts and fantastic hosts make this place a top pick among B&B's. This was our 2nd trip and we will definitely be back again!
We stayed at the Woodruff House for a short get a way. What a great time we had. You get the warm welcome and the country charm as soon as you walk in. Breakfast is fantastic and large so make sure you are hungry. We were close to Main Street where all of the shops are at and was able to walk to the local favorite restaurant "The Speak Easy" Everything was perfect
We arrived early to a very warm welcome under the shade of the two magnificent Black Walnut Trees that flank the front porch! This was our second visit in the past year and we delighted to be introduced to the 24/7 coffee service located in the Main house Foyer! This was also our second stay in the 1790 suite where we LOVE to sit on the balcony Under the Canopies of the Black Walnuts and enjoy our coffee & Shenandoah Valley sunrises in our PJs ! Breakfast at the door (and the gentle knock, knock) is always delightful and was a great start for our daily morning adventure at the Edith Carrier Arboretum! We enjoyed our strolls & dining in downtown Harrisonburg as well as our trips to the town of Dayton and its Farmers Market. A trip to the White Oak Lavender Farm was a must and we were quite thrilled with the tour, the animals and learning about the production of Lavender products. And it was always so nice to come Home to"By the Side of the Road" and sit on our Balcony in the comfort of the Walnut Trees and enjoy another Beautiful Shenandoah Valley Evening!
Erik and Evanne are wonderful hosts. We stayed in the luxurious Walt Whitman grande suite and spent the weekend lounging in the beautiful saltwater swimming pool. The bed and linens are top of the line, and the breakfasts on the large front porch were delicious with a gorgeous view. Happy hours were fun times to visit with other guests and try some great wines. Looking forward to future stays at this fantastic resort!! Highly recommended.
This new Inn allows you to reconnect with nature as Thoreau would have imagined but in a manor far removed from a sparse cabin on Walden Pond. The innkeepers Eric and Evanne are attentive but not intrusive responding to every small request with warm hospitality. The Inn and grounds are spectacular. We stayed in the Walt Whitman Grande and it was just that absolutely grand! Luxurious but touchable. The breakfasts were imaginative and delicious and they easily accommodated our gluten free requirement. They served wine and cheese, late afternoon, with local Virginia wines including our favorite winery DuCard. We stayed for three nights and it was a perfect getaway. Walden Hall would be lovely any time of year.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mayneview Bed and Breakfast! The managers made us comfortable and the breakfast was out of this world delicious! What I like best was the view of the mountains. We sat in rockers on the porch and just looked at the mountains. It is quiet and relaxing and beautiful. You will not be disappointed.
We have been going to Piney Hill for several years now, and we feel it is still the top B&B we have ever visited. Inn keepers are very accomodating and freindly. Almost like visiitng an old likeable family friends.
Looked forward to staying at a B & B. It looked great online and had good reviews. However, the furniture and decor was mismatched and the housekeeping was not up to par. The "king" bed was two twins pushed together with a hump between them. Felt uncomfortable as the owners, who we didn't meet, did not live there and no staff was on site at night. This was the first B & B that I had to make the bed myself. Breakfast was good but had to wait until 8:30 for it. The view of the Blue Ridge mountains was awesome. The MayneView B & B has a lot of potential, but it is not there yet. L Nash
Great honeymoon spot. Breakfast was delicious and loved the door delivery every morning. I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to get away from it all and enjoy peace and quiet.
If I could rate Piney Hill as a "6", I would! My husband and I celebrated our first year anniversary at Piney Hill and we stayed for 2 nights in the private Rosebud Cottage. After a long day of travel, we pulled up to their beautiful property in the heart of the countryside in Virgina and knew we made the right choice. We fell in love with everything about Piney Hill and sensed that warm, southern hospitality immediately. The grounds are immaculate and pristine, with several places to sit, relax and take in the peaceful views. We were taken to the Rosebud Cottage, which had everything we needed inside for our home away from home, including a charming, comfortable atmosphere; outside there was a private porch where we ate our breakfasts and a private deck where we spent time winding down and taking in the views. After settling in, we took advantage of several local attractions and were given helpful recommendations based on our interests. The breakfasts were delicious works of art and we were also surprised with a couple of treats in the afternoon, which were also scrumtious. I commend Hank and Wiley for the obvious pride they have in their B&B as it showed in all aspects of our stay and it showed in the attention to detail you will find on the property. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!! I highly recommend a stay at Piney Hill and will be giving rave personal reviews to all my friends and family. Thank you Hank and Wiley for making our stay so special and memorable!
Pros: Location is great for attractions in Luray. Staff is pleasant and kid friendly. Rooms are spacious, the suite on the top floor is comfortable for a family to stay. The view is beautiful and the late check-in was easy. They will accommodate special dietary needs for breakfast. The house feels cozy, like staying with a relative instead of a sterile hotel atmosphere. Cons: The hot tub smelled really strong of mildew - still can't get the smell out of my bathing suit. The rooms could use a deep cleaning, most surfaces were clean, but things like the window sills, molding and the bathroom floor needed a good wipe down. Although the breakfast was good, It was items that I would make at home, I don't think much was made from scratch, more of a heat and serve kind of breakfast. I would expect better quality of food for a bnb in this price range.
My wife and I stayed in the Bergey Cottage from 29 March - 2 April 2015. What we loved most was the fact that we didn't have to get dressed to get breakfast, as it was brought right to our door in a basket. The only down side to that is, should you wake up early and hungry, you better have snacks in the room with you since breakfast is delivered at certain times. Breakfast alternated each day between sweet and savory. The cottage is cute and split down the middle where the bed/living/dining area is on one side and the bathroom/tub/shower on the other. A little too cozy with the open ceiling when you or your partner need to use the bathroom. We just turned on the music to have a little privacy. Some complained that the inn was too close to the road. Um...look at the name, should be no surprise there. We barely heard any traffic...not the busiest street. We loved the area. Harrisonburg is easy to navigate and there is plenty to do. I was able to get three rounds of golf in. The course I enjoyed the most was right down the road. My wife was able to get some much needed pampering at a local spa. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, and the cottage is equipped with a microwave and small refrigerator for any leftovers you may have. The room also has the essentials...tv, dvd player, radio w/ cd player and usb hook up, coffee maker, etc. The Inn's owners make the experience even more comfortable by littering the entire property with beautiful aspects of their family. Upon entry into our cottage, we were 'greeted' by beautiful family pictures that gave the place an even more, 'home away from home' feel. The owners and inn keepers are there if you need them, willing to give you a tour and answer any questions you might have. However if you want to be left alone, you wouldn't even know they were there. James Madison University is close by, however this felt nothing like a college town. We would definitely go back!
I think the review for Piney Hill speak for themselves already, but the owners Hank & Wiley have one more VERY satisfied customer. It was a little pricey, but I feel that the location, atmosphere, treatment and food make this experience worth it. The rooms, while historical, cozy, and functional, are unexpectedly small. But I chalk this up to the house being more than 150 years old and I feel that it adds to its country charm. The food served by the innkeepers is simply outstanding and second to none. I stand by my assertion that it was the best breakfast I ever had. The B&B is a short distance from many beautiful attractions in Luray and Shenandoah National Park. Overall highly recommended.
We love the Fitzgerald cottage. It was our second time staying in it and it was as charming as the first time. Relaxing in the two-person jacuzzi in front of the wood-burning fireplace while sipping sherry is a grand way to spend a couple of hours during the evening. The innkeepers are always so pleasant and the breakfasts are delicious. The lack of communal dining is also a plus in our book! Thanks for keeping such a delightful B&B!
This B&B was perfect. I was looking for a quiet place, where I could relax when I wanted and still be able to go out and enjoy the day. This place was exactly that. I will definitely be coming back here again and again.
My wife and I stayed for our first anniversary and loved our time at By The Side of the Road. We stayed in the beautiful and modern Mountain Laurel cabin, part of the Spring Water Suites, and loved the privacy, as well as the luxurious, roomy, and well stocked accommodations. Breakfast was delivered to the door each morning and we were able to start our days at a relaxing pace.
