I have been back to visit Bettona several times and found a place to call home while I am in the heart of Italy. Michael is really great on helping you decide where to go and what to do and where to eat during a visit. His place is really comfortable and I have stayed in several different rooms - enjoyed all of them and my stay. If you want to get away from the busy world and relax and enjoy the Italian Country side - this is the place to be.

Did you ever wish you had this really cool friend who lived in Italy—in a beautiful palazzo in a charming hilltown—who just loved having guests? Well, you do. Michael La Placa calls his establishment a “Bed and Breakfast”, but it is so much more, and so much better. His palazzo, built in the 17th century, has been lovingly and tastefully restored by Michael himself. It retains all of its old world charm, but is extremely comfortable, with great bathrooms and amenities. It is located in the small and endlessly picturesque town of Bettona, a stone’s throw from Assisi and Perugia. I have been three times in a row during the summer. If you want to be on your own, that’s fine, but Michael is most willing to be your guide to the wonders of Umbria, which he knows extremely well. In addition to the obvious tourist spots, like Assisi, he’s shown me wonderful off-the-beaten-track spots, like the Church of San Franceso in the village of Montefalco, with marvelous Renaissance frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli. (We were the only ones in the church!) You will take back wonderful memories and be eager to return often.
This wonderful bedroom on the Piano Nobile (main floor) of the palazzo is beautifully furnished with antiques and a comfortable queen size bed. There is a private bath with toilet, sink, and shower. There is no minimum nights stay for the B&B and the cost includes breakfast in the palazzo’s main kitchen, on the terrace, or at the bar in the piazza.
Azzuro B&B room: sleeps 2 — 100€ per night; 700€ per week** This wonderful bedroom on the Piano Nobile (main floor) of the palazzo is beautifully furnished with antiques and two comfortable single beds. The room has tall ceilings and a window that looks out over the valley toward Assisi. There is a private bathroom, toilet, sink, and shower. There is no minimum nights stay for the B&B and the cost includes breakfast in the palazzo’s main kitchen, on the terrace, or at the bar in the piazza. In addition: Other Meals can be provided if you wish. Most guests join me the first night for dinner giving us a chance to get to talk about Umbria. Dinners are 25e and lunches 15e per person. Full and half day tours are also available or you might want to consider one of our all inclusive package tours. Cooking lessons in the palazzo’s wonderful kitchen can be easily arranged.

This one bedroom apartment is called Gufo because, when I purchased the house, a beautiful white barn owl (gufo) was living among the rafters. The apartment has a cathedral ceiling with wooden beams – salvaged from another part of the house – and a spiral staircase leading to the sleeping loft with a comfortable queen size bed. From the apartment windows one can enjoy the view of the surrounding hills and over into the Spoleto Valley. The spacious main room, again with Mission style furnishings, has a comfortable combination living/dining room with a Stickley table and chairs. The kitchen has a marble counter top, cooktop, stove, fridge, and everything you need to enjoy preparing our local food. The comfortable bathroom, with a shower, has a marble sink and antique floor tiles – again, salvaged from another part of the palazzo. This truly is a delightful apartment to stay in with plenty of light and wonderful views.

The extremely comfortable two bed room apartment is called "Assisi" because of its lovely view over the valley toward Assisi. At night the lights of the city and it's rocca are magical. Spacious and airy, the apartment is has rustic stone walls and a beautiful white-washed beamed ceiling. The living room and dining area, with a large dining table, is furnished in the Mission Style. There is a fully equipped kitchen with large refrigerator, dishwasher, and a marble counter top. The bedrooms are furnished with beautiful local antiques and the beds are very comfortable. Bedrooms sleep 4 people — one has a Queen size bed and the other can be configured as a King or as Twin beds. There is a lovely balcony with chairs for relaxing and taking in the countryside.

All food is prepared in the palazzo's kitchen by your host using the freshest locally sourced ingredients. During the summer many of the vegetables are from the Palazzo's own garden. Cooking lessons are also available as well as wine tastings at local wineries.
