Stayed in the Nat King Cole suite...absolutely fabulous! The huge bath room with the spa tub was the highlight of my stay. Love it!

Amazing old house, great hosts, loved the stay

Great stay!

This is really the quintessential home away from home. From the moment I met Mell and Angie, I felt comfortable and embraced as a member of their "guest" family. A lovely, restored home with wonderful artwork throughout was truly inspiring. Book a stay and experience true quality! Tammy Frankland

Chicago experience

4,4 en octubre 09, 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the historical area of Chicago. We felt very safe and comfortable. Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel right at home. They even provided transportation every morning to wherever we wanted to go. Our room was very comfortable. Hospitality was superb.

Great Place to Stay Close to the University of Chicago

4,0 en septiembre 22, 2014

The owners Mel and Angie are very personable and friendly. You immediately feel at home. Mel makes a great breakfast with each morning something different and homemade. The house is a historical journey in itself with photos and memorabilia of the rich African American cultural history of Chicago. I would definitely stay again.

Freelancing in the City of Labor

5 en septiembre 10, 2014

I found the Welcome Inn Manor while looking for lodging close enough to enjoy the Chicago Jazz Festival. The Victorian house is lovely, high ceilings, gorgeous fireplace mantels and the woodwork has been lovingly restored. The innkeepers Mell and Angie Monroe helped me with transportation to the Festival in Millennial Park both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. They hosted a marvelous Sunday brunch attended by guests of the Inn, and longtime friends. Their congeniality and attentiveness was without parallel. Mell helped me rent a bicycle from a neighborhood shop so I could have the bike all afternoon for the price of an hour’s rental of a baby-blue bike on Lakeshore Drive Trail. On the final evening I tagged along with my hosts to a marvelous arts and crafts festival in Harold Washington Park. Welcome Inn Manor is close to University of Chicago and many of the city’s museums. A beautiful home with outstanding hosts. The coffee is ready before you are and the breakfast sausage is the bomb. Don’t miss this!

Welcome Inn More Than Lives Up To Its Name

5 en agosto 02, 2014

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, we felt like family at the Welcome Inn Manor. Located outside the bustle of downtown Chicago, the atmosphere of this Inn was more like a stay with relatives. Our room was pleasant and quiet,a necessity. Mell and his wife Angie went out of their way to make our stay comfortable, dropping us off in the morning at places we wanted to visit, helping us with restaurants and providing guidance since we were first time visitors to the city. This is one of the best B&Bs we have stayed in during our travels and it is highly recommended.

High Expectations Were Met

3,2 en agosto 02, 2014

This was our second stay at Welcome Inn and it was just as good a choice as the first time. This time, Mell may even have excelled himself as a breakfast chef.

Manor/Art Gallery

Everything was fabulous. The host and hostess were awesome, breakfasts were amazing, they would not let me out the door without a warm meal in me in the morning. Mel would go out of his way to drop me off downtown first thing in the morning and was gracious enough to get me to the start of my race early in the morning. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the bathroom was big and clean with all of the little extras. There was so much comfortable space to lounge around in the parlor and the back sitting room. The place was perfectly air conditioned as well as having beautiful ceiling fans to keep the air circulated.

Best Bed & Breakfast

This is the BEST Bed & Breakfast I've ever visited. The service, food and room were outstanding. I highly recommend the Welcome Inn Manor!

“Chicago, let's go to the Southside and check out Bronzeville”

4,4 en junio 24, 2014

Inn Manor is a very nice B&B, refurbished with love by it's owner Angie & Mell Monroe, at the Southside of Chicago in Bronzeville. If you are interested in a well-preserved historical building, hospitality, a good breakfast and if you like to meet nice People from all over the world, that's the place to go.

Wonderful Place in Chicago

5 en junio 17, 2014

My wife and I spent a long weekend here recently and thought this was one of the best city locations we’ve ever stayed– even comparing with five star hotels. We had a chance to be close to the ground in South Side (Bronzeville) Chicago – half way between the University of Chicago (we were visiting a nephew) and downtown (which is amazing) -- and feel ourselves surrounded by local culture. Mell and Angie, the owners, were welcoming and great hosts. The house is a newly removed old mansion. Our suite – the Nate King Cole room - was extremely large, clean, and tastefully designed with outstanding Afro-American art. The furniture and such amenities as a sauna were fantastic. We asked to see some other rooms for fun: the Rosenwald and Alinsky rooms were equally artistic in design. The owners made us feel at home and made themselves available for any questions about getting around Chicago and the local culture. Breakfast was a feast, mouth-watering and delicious. We didn’t need anything until dinnertime. Our needs as vegetarians were catered to gracefully and perfectly. One morning a guest jazz musician from Kansas sang Stormy Monday and Autumn Leaves during breakfast. I felt lucky to be down-home in Chicago. Guests come from all over. Discussions were wonderful at the table. One of the great things about this BnB is that it is located in a gentrifying black neighborhood. We felt the culture’s inner strength and emergence. Public transportation was fine. Cabs at night weren’t expensive. On Sunday morning I realized that I could hear a gospel service and walked a few blocks and had a wonderful time. This BnB was an important reason that I enjoyed our visit to Chicago. This place is an oasis and special treat.

2014 stay

Our hosts were amazing and helpful as we planned our stay in Chicago. The food and hospitality were excellent. Our room was delightful, but a bit cluttered (all lovely!). Also we received no daily freshening of our room/bathroom. We stay again.

Home away from home...but even better!!!

5 en junio 08, 2014

Mell and Angie were the best!! They truly enjoy their job and want to make the stay at their b & b the best, which they absolutely accomplished! The room was amazing!! As was the rest if the home! Mell is an amazing chef, and we truly felt like we were staying with family! Anything we needed, they took care of it! Mell And Angie took the time to acclimate us to the area, and share some of their favorites places to go, eat and experience!! We will definitely stay again when we are in chicago!!

A very pleasant stay

Stay here! Comfort, cuisine, safe, convenient, historic...

No need to spend more money on a generic, corporate hotel chain when visiting the U of C or nearby. After finding it on the University of Chicago's suggested list of places for alums and visitors, I stayed at Mell and Angie's beautiful, historic home for several days during some professional training earlier this spring. First off, discard any cautions about the neighborhood - the home is eminently safe, and part of a historic and revitalizing area. It's convenient to the university, south loop, and highway to elsewhere. They have taken a historic home and not only refurbished it but really enhanced it with original art and historical artifacts that help you understand the area where you are staying. The service was unparalleled -- this is a cultured couple who host visitors from around the world, and every single morning and night I learned things over the breakfast table or a glass of wine. This is a hidden gem. I will be staying there again! -Bob N., U of C alum, currently in Memphis

My new friends' place

5 en abril 22, 2014

I was taking my son to visit The University of Chicago. My wife found the Welcome Inn Manor while looking for a hotel for us. She always finds us great places and I am so glad she found this one, only 3 miles from the school. The house was warm and welcoming and beautifully decorated. Mell treated me and my son like new friends, offering anything we needed including advice on great places to eat and things to see. In the mornings, we were treated to fantastic home cooking that you cannot get in a restaurant. My son will be attending UofC so we will be visiting this bed and breakfast often in the next several years. Thanks Ang and Mell!

Great place for couples

5 en febrero 18, 2014

It was my responsibility to make plans for Valentine's Day this year. I decided to the two of us would meet in Chicago, I live in Minnesota and my boyfriend lives in Atlanta. We stayed in the Nat King Cole Suite. It is amazing. My boyfriend is not easily impressed but he has gushed on and about the food and the accommodations. I highly recommend. We will definitely go back.

Great weekend getaway in the city!

Hidden Gem in South Chicago

5 en febrero 10, 2014

Words cannot express the likability of this HIDDEN gem in the Southside. Both hosts, Mell and Angie, were welcoming right from the start. They are one of the most gracious and thoughtful people we have come across in our lives. I wanted to celebrate my fiance's birthday at our first bed-and-breakfast experience together. We were more than pleased with our stay and the hosts' service. The breakfast on both days were very palatable and scrumptious. Due to this experience, my fiance and I are more than likely to return to this B&B. We highly recommend this B&B for your stay!!

Better than we every though

5 en diciembre 26, 2013

We went to Chicago to see our Daughter get her Masters at UOC. We did not expect to have one of the best vacations we have had in a while. The house is more beautiful than the pictures show. The feeling of home and peace is through out the house. Our room was great!!! Mell made our trip grand!! First, he found out what we liked then made the best suggestions. We followed them and found ourselves experience Chicago at it's best. From the Mag mile to the Brown Durby (jazz one of my favorite) to the UOC campus, we had a great time. We are now planning to come during the summer and will stay no ware else then the Welcome Inn Manor!! Thanks again Mell!!!

Charming B&B

4,0 en diciembre 14, 2013

Mell and Angie were so nice during my stay. The B&B was in a convenient location. This was my first time staying at a B&B and they tried to do everything to make sure I was comfortable. I hope to visit again one day.

Wonderful warm hosts and home

5 en noviembre 13, 2013

Mel And Angie were wonderful hosts! They made us feel welcome right away; I immediately felt as though I were visiting old friends. Their home is beautiful and comfortable. My daughter was visiting the University of Chicago, and spent the night. Mel and Angie, concerned that I would be alone and worrying about her, took me out to dinner with them to keep me company after I had left her at the university. I did not have a car, but Mel made sure I got to the University to drop off and pick up my daughter, and the El was a few short blocks on foot when we wanted to go to downtown Chicago. Mel's breakfast's are out of this world. I am not normally a breakfast eater, but I could not resist. And Angie makes wonderful French toast. I hope I have to go Chicago again some time just so I can stay with Mel and Angie again.

A Gem of an Inn

4,8 en noviembre 11, 2013

If you need to be anywhere on the South Side near University of Chicago look no further. This warm and wonderful bed-and-breakfast is run by an incredible couple look out for your every need. I've learned more about Chicago by staying there then all of my years staying in hotels. The rooms are magnificent with such character from floor to ceiling. I love staying here and look forward to the next time. -Karen from San Francisco

Wonderful Experience!

5 en noviembre 10, 2013

We stayed in the Nat King Cole room for our honeymoon in September. As this was our first B&B experience, we didn't really know what to expect. But when I called Mell before booking and asked some general questions, I just had a gut feeling that this was the place to stay. I can't begin to say how much we enjoyed our trip because of our stay at Welcome Inn Manor. The bedroom was beautiful and incredibly spacious, and the adjoining bath with Jacuzzi tub, fireplace, and large shower with dual shower heads was even more luxurious than the pictures show. Mell and Angie were the perfect hosts, making us feel as though we had all known each other for years. They shuttled us to whatever downtown location we asked each morning, and every place we went based upon their recommendation was well worth our time. Mell cooked a delicious breakfast each morning, and the dining room and common areas downstairs were so inviting that it felt like home (only more relaxing thanks to Mell and Angie's taste in decorating and perfectly kept atmosphere). We will definitely be back and would recommend Welcome Inn Manor without hesitation! Thanks for making our honeymoon so special and memorable!!

Absolutely Fabulous

5 en octubre 18, 2013

From the moment that Mell picked me up at the train station to the moment he dropped me off on my way home, I had the most wonderful time. The Inn is beautifully and tastefully restored. It is spotlessly clean and spacious. The breakfasts were tailored to the tastebuds of the guests; they were plentiful and excellent. What impressed me the most was the hospitality and care of Mell and Angie. I was staying in Chicago by myself and they recommended places to eat and visit that they thought I would like. They went to the effort of escorting me around during the day and in the evening as well. I was taken to the famous Jazz club on my last night which I thoroughly enjoyed. I wholeheartedly recommend the Welcome Inn Manor and am looking for an excuse to return to Chicago again. Maybe the marathon next year!

Welcome Inn is a welcoming place to stay in Chicago

4,2 en octubre 17, 2013

The Welcome Inn is about 7 miles from the heart of the city, but we found that it was situated in a very convenient location - close to the train. Mel provided us transportation to/from the Amtrak train station and then gave us lifts into town. We took the train home in the evening with no problems. We happened to be in Chicago over a busy holiday weekend when the weather was perfect for strolling through the City. My spouse and I highly recommend the Welcome Inn for US and international tourists to Chicago.

A great vacation place.

Welcome Inn Manor

4,6 en octubre 07, 2013

Welcome Inn Manor was a WONDERFUL place to stay! The accommodations were incredible, including a beautiful reading nook, Jacuzzi bathtub, spa-style shower, and lovely historic decor. Mell made delicious homemade breakfast each morning according to guests' schedules, and offered complimentary shuttle service to and from downtown attractions. The location was perfect too - it is nestled in a neighborhood just a few miles away from downtown Chicago - it was a short drive or bus-ride to all the major museums and attractions. It really felt more like staying with friends than at a B&B! My husband and I were very pleased and would stay there again in a heartbeat if traveling to Chicago in the future.

Hospitality Unsurpassed

5 en octubre 01, 2013

Mell and Ange, the Innkeepers of Welcome Inn Manor, take hospitality to an unsurpassable level. Breakfast is a sumptuous surprise every morning. Transportation is easily available and the shopping advice is invaluable. We were about settling our son as a freshman at UChicago and he was able to stay with us for the first 2 nights. The Lady D suite had everything we could want to meet our hectic schedule, including a desperately needed safety pin. Meeting other guests over breakfast was refreshing and rewarding. We made good use of the shuttle to go south to UC’s campus and north for shopping and sightseeing. We have made friends in Chicago so that we are now eager to return for graduation and, hopefully, before that too. What a blessing!

My husband and I had just made a 13 hour drive from New York to drop our son at college. Mel & Angie, the proprietors of Welcome Manor Inn were so welcoming and relaxed. Their beautiful mansion is filled with art, much of it offering an opportunity to sink into the richness of African American culture through paintings, jazz, and photographs. Mel cooked the most delicious breakfasts and even took moments to explain his cooking secrets for poached eggs and grits. We needed to buy some second-hand furniture and a new bed for our son and Mel steered us in the right direction. The rooms are beautiful. We had a massive bathroom with a whirlpool tub. You could hear jazz when you came into the house at night. Basically, Welcome Manor provided a rich stay for us in Chicago in a gracious and warm manner. This will be our place to stay when in Chicago. Michele Araujo & Adam Simon

Home away from home in Chicago

4,4 en agosto 12, 2013

What a wonderful B & B! Mell and Angie are wonderful hosts and incredibly nice people, consistently going above and beyond the call of duty in terms of providing information, showing us around, and generally making us feel welcome. The house is beautiful, the rooms are great, it's an interesting up and coming neighborhood convenient to both U Chicago and Downtown, and we felt warmly welcomed in a city that was new to us. Mell's sumptuous breakfasts are second to none. Can't recommend this place highly enough!

Enjoyed our stay

4,6 en julio 29, 2013

Mel is very accomodating and a pleasure to be around. We enjoyed our stay very much. We stayed in the Nat King Cole suite. Bathroom is huge and beautiful. Only thing I didn't rate outstanding was the room. While nice, it was dusty, the bedroom window unit always tripped the breaker making the room hot, the bathroom window unit leaked a lot of water into the room. It is an older house and Mel was wonderful and I'm sure he is working on getting those things fixed. I would also recommend some cheap shades or black-out shades in the bedroom window to block out the bright street lights. Thanks so much for the pick ups and drop offs and for hanging out with us that one evening. We enjoyed the breakfasts each day. Not super fancy, but not boring or bland either...which is fine by me...good variety every day. We took the El from the nearby station and rode the bus back one day and Mel picked us up and dropped us off at other times, mainly after dark (thanks for your kindness and courtesy to us "small-town folk"). We enjoyed our stay.

Nothing to Complain About

4,6 en julio 26, 2013

I stayed in the Nat King Cole suite, which is the biggest suite. The room was beautiful and spacious. The bathroom was clean and well kept. Another positive thing about this bed and breakfast is that it is not far from one of the train stations. I got around Chicago mostly by bus and train, so it was super convenient that the train station was only about a 6-10 minute walk away. The food was decent. Mell definitely prepares enough food to fill his guests up. I would definitely stay here again.

I Highly Recommend Welcome Inn Manor

5 en julio 26, 2013

We stayed several days since we were attending a convention, and found that staying at Welcome Manor Inn was the highlight of our trip. Fabulous decor, beautiful antiques, outstanding breakfast each morning, but best of all was getting to know Mell, Angie & Sinbad. The artwork in the Manor is worth the stay in itself. Special thanks to Mell and Angie for dropping what they were doing and taking us in their shuttle to our dinner meeting. They also gave us recommendations for site seeing and dinner. We hope to come back one day.

First Time and our Honeymoon

5 en julio 09, 2013

We stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor for our honeymoon recently. We have nothing but nice things to say about this Bed & Breakfast. The owners were very hospitable and accommodating. The rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The entire house is decorated in a very homey way and we felt right at home our entire stay. The B&B isn't far from the "L" train system so it was very easy to get to the main attractions in Chicago. We highly recommend that you stay here!

A real surprise!

4,6 en julio 08, 2013

What a wonderful surprise to find this B&B in Chicago. I attended a conference only miles away and the B&B was located close to the main streets that connect to everything worth seeing. Besides the location the host was the BEST. Cooked an amazing breakfast each morning, shuttled folks back and forth and could not have been more helpful. I will definitely return!!

A great place to go and relax...

We had an amazing experience at the Welcome Inn Manor, so much that we are already planning another trip back. The hospitality was beyond compare coupled by an immaculate estate, it made our trip more than memorable. Anyone who visits will absolutely love this place, its owners and the rich history that make the manor uncomparable.

best lodging experience in chicago

5 en junio 30, 2013

Amazing nineteenth century manor, very comforting and welcoming, the host was available to take guests to places, made sure they were set for things, breakfast was great, fellow guests were kind and the place had a way of encouraging fellow feeling among guests in a rare way in a big city lodging. the room I stayed in is called the Nat Cole suite - the bathroom has its own small sitting room, and then a jacuzzi with all sorts of oils and stuff, and an hd tv - you can relax and watch a game. Really beautiful and attentive details throughout, the furniture, the rest - Spotless. In addition to the couple that runs the place, a small staff is very helpful. Great access to U Chicago.

Great Getaway at Welcome Inn Manor

4,4 en junio 24, 2013

My wife and I stayed at Welcome Inn while we were in town for a business conference. The conference was at McCormick Place which was a quick 5 minute drive with no traffic each morning which was great. Mell and Angie made us feel at home. The room we were in (Nat King Cole suite) was great and spacious. Bathroom had an awesome whirlpool tub and shower. We were sad it was the middle of summer and we couldn't take advantage of the two fireplaces. Mell's breakfasts were great and he gave us some great tips for dinner each night. We will stay here again!

We stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor a few weeks ago, and had a marvelous time. We stayed in the Nat Cole suite and felt pampered beyond belief by the beautiful room, huge jacuzzi tub, rain shower, and amazingly inviting bed. Easy access to and from the heart of Chicago, relaxing environment in the B&B, and Mel and Angie's kindness yielded a great stay. When next in Chicago we definitely plan on returning!

Visiting our son at UChicago

4,8 en marzo 05, 2013

This was our 3rd or 4th stay at the WelcomeInnManor. We love to location because it is so close to UChicago where our son attends. It takes us about 5 minutes to get to the school. Mell and Angie have truly made us feel that this is our home away from home. They could not be more gracious. Last year on a cold February day, Mell made a delicious soup in the crock pot that was available to quests whenever they felt the need for something warm and comforting. It is really nice to sit in the living room and visit with our son without the distraction of restaurants or roommates. We will continue to stay with Mell and Angie whenever we visit Chicago!

Mell & Angie

Wonderful Holiday 2012

4,8 en enero 05, 2013

Came and stayed here for Christmas 2012. It doesn't get any better than this! Comfortable, wonderful rooms rich with history. Mell, the Innkeeper, and his wife Angie truly made the 4 of us feel like it was our place. I've been to other B&B's and never felt quite comfortable enough to lounge around the main floor living room. Not here. Felt very comfortable. These are good people that will make you feel like family and go to the extra mile to make your stay more enjoyable. Mell offers rides to various local restaurants and music venues. Not necessarily the touristy areas but places that really give you truly a "local feel". Of course he will offer to take you to the more well-traveled areas (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, etc). Oh, and the food he prepares for breakfast is very well prepared and hearty for a day of sightseeing. Oh, and the the other couple staying there were vegetarians and Mell will prepare special meals if that's a need you have. Tip:All the rooms are exceptional but the Nat King Cole room is second to none. Believe me. tl;dr - Awesome place. Awesome people. Awesome food. For the above rating for service, I wish we could put 6 stars to indicate just how much Mell and Angie go the extra mile to provide outstanding service.

Excellent experience that should not be missed

5 en enero 05, 2013

Having never been to Chicago, my fiancee and I had no idea what to expect from a B&B inside the city. We could not have been more fortunate in our decision to use the Welcome Inn Manor for our stay. The innkeepers are great and truly make you feel welcome, as well as giving you a lot of insight into the city and things to do. The room was truly beautiful and extravagant (the jacuzzi was great!) We will definitely be returning in the future and recommend this B&B to anyone traveling to Chicago or anyone who is interested in a relaxing and one-of-a-kind experience

Friendly, warm, good food

4,6 en enero 02, 2013

We stayed a total of 3 nights at the end of December, including New Year's Eve. Mell and Angie were gracious hosts and offered us wine and refreshments upon arrival. They gave us a lot of great recommendations about off-the-beaten path spots to go in Chicago. We stayed in the Lady D room, which was cozy and well-decorated. They provided an extra space heater so we could warm our room to our own comfort level. Breakfast was served family-style around a large table with other guests. The breakfasts were large and creative with good use of unique spices. The neighborhood of Bronzeville is undergoing re-gentrification. Street parking is easy and free and literally you can pull up right to their side gate. On our next visit we will try to book the Nat King Cole suite, which was unfortunately already booked during this visit.

Warm, friendly, unique, lovely

3,2 en diciembre 28, 2012

The innkeepers are lovely people, and Mell will bend over backwards to help you feel at home and cared for. He drove us places, and did everything he could to keep us entertained - and we especially appreciated the focus on local businesses and taking us "off the beaten path." The house is beautiful & decor is eclectic; the food was great. It's the first B&B I've experienced that didn't tidy up the rooms between nights. But overall, it was a great experience and we would do it again.

A Great Place

Our recent trip to Chicago was greatly enhanced by our stay at the Welcome Inn Manor. Mell and Angie have lovingly restored a great home and enhanced it with wonderful art and historic information. We were made to feel completely at home and given wonderful ideas on things to do and places to dine including a trip to Room 43 for some wonderful jazz. Mell’s “artistic” breakfasts were all we could hope for. Our room was comfortable and wonderfully furnished. With easy access to Chicago’s transit system, the Welcome Inn Manor proved to be a great place to stay. Dave and Diane Nov 2012

What a wonderful experience staying at the Welcome Inn Manor in Chicago. This historic home was well appointed with wonderful furnishings and fabulous artwork throughout. I would highly recommend this wonderful B&B to others. A must see.

Great style-

5 en noviembre 06, 2012

Great style- My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary at the Welcome Inn Manor B&B. We loved the all natural and well decored style of the inn, its great location to Chicago tourism attractions and a few miles from downtown. Mel and Angie were attentive, but not fussy. They gave us space but were helpful whenever we had questions about Chicago and learning about interesting things to do. We were especially impressed with their suggestions for restaurants with BYOB (bring your own bottle) policies. We ate and drank and ate and drank almost every night after a long day shopping and touring Chicagoland. This B&B was a truly interesting inn and a great find for us. I liked the style of the inn and it was almost perfect in every way. Hats off to the innkeepers- well done. We'll see you next year at our 2014 anniversary- we'll be back!

This is my second time staying at a bed&breakfast and this place exceeded my expecations...I've stayed in bed&breakfasts in the Wine Country in Napa Valley California and the service at Welcome Inn Manor far and away exceeds the places I've stayed in at Napa Valley. The Welcome Inn Manor exceeded my expecations because the owners of this place provided superior service...I mean it was more personable and down home then other places I've stayed at, therefore they made my feel right at home...I did not get the sense I was just a transaction with the same old smile and inpersonal service. I felt like the Welcome Inn Manor owners had a vested personable interest in seeing my wife and I be happy and comfortable, and they wanted me to see the whole city of Chicago and not just the favorite tourism spots.. The food was excellent and well seasoned and they always provided more than enough food and wine for my wife and I to enjoy thoughout the day and evening. Well seasoned food is to me a sign of excellent personable service and it shows that you care enough to make sure your guests food is excellent. Good Job !!! I was also was impressed with each room having it's own historical/Jazz theme...Each room was decorated different then the other. I had never seen a place like this before. Most places have the same style/theme in each room but that was not the case with Welcome Inn Manor. Each room in Welcome Inn Manor was unique and I thought this was very cool...Again never seen anything like it before and it shows that Welcome Inn Manor cares about your experience/stay with them that they would make each room different. I will come back just so I can stay in different room. The Welcome Inn Manor is an excellent bed and breakfast and in my opion it really is a outstanding value for the money. I love this place...See you in the summer of 2013

Beautiful home, wonderful hospitality!

My husband and I recently stayed at the Welcome Inn and enjoyed culture and fascinating conversation. The owners are simly wonderful and a joy to speak with as they want you to have the best stay possible. It was a different type of bed & breakfast than were we have previously stayed. The only negative is that you can't walk anywhere--for two reasons, there aren't any restaurants/shops in the immediate neighborhood and the other is that the neighborhood itself does not exactly feel safe although we felt safe coming and going and were told it is safe--just not walking. We loved our experience and learned a lot about the inner workings of Chicago! We were looking for a different Chicago experience since we have been there many times. Goal accomplished as we spent very little time downtown. We would certainly stay with Mel and Angie again!

I had the pleasure to stay at the Welcome Inn Manor in mid September 2012. I am from the area but due to Chicagoland traffic my commute to U of C for a week long class was just awful. To escape this nightmare I chose this B & B as my base of operations for the week. I had an amazing stay! Mell and Angela were warm, welcoming and made me feel right at home. The location is excelent for enjoying the great resaurants in the area and the lake front. If you don't have a clue where to start Mell is ready with great sugestions. There is also a very helpful guide in each suite about the area.. Having a great hot breakfast to start off my day made me feel pampered! This B & B is one of the amazing Chicago historic homes, with a real feel of days long past. Even though walking in the door takes you to the past, all the modern comforts (including one the most comfortable beds I"ve ever slept on) can be found here. Thanks Mell for a great stay!

We had a fantastic stay here. No complaints whatsoever. Mell and his wife who run the place are great people doing great work for the local community. Stunning room (we had the Nat King Cole Suite), wonderful breakfasts and a lovely relaxed vibe to the entire house which is beautifully decked out. Highly recommended. Chris & Rowena

What can we say about this wonderful experience? Friendly reception, large room - we stayed in the Nat King Cole suite, with it's magnificent equally large bathroom. Mell and Angie went out of their way to get us acquainted with Chicago, even going so far as to take us to Navy Pier and drop us off when we left them, which was much appreciated during the incredible heatwave. We met some very interesting fellow guests. Thanks Mell and Angie - your interest in us, friendliness and hospitality are unrivalled. Next time we hope to make the Jazz Club with you! Great service, beautiful home and convenient location

The house is beautiful and in a re-gentrifying neighborhood just south of the loop. But the real reason to stay here is Mel and Angie. They treated us like family. We were in Chicago on business and, while they made sure we were able to take care of business, they also helped us relax and have fun the rest of the time. Thanks Mel and Angie. We hope to see you again some day. We have already recommended you to a friend. Dave and Lynn

Welcome Inn -- an historic home in Chicago

4,4 en julio 15, 2012

My wife and I greatly enjoyed our three-night stay at the Welcome Inn Manor in July 2012. It's a beautiful old home (built in 1892) exquisitely decorated and with super-high ceilings. The hosts, Mell and Angie, are as friendly and interesting as people can be. The common areas downstairs, including the dining room, are beautiful. There we were served breakfasts made by Mell that were so generous that we were set for the day until dinnertime and had no need to stop for lunch as we toured Chicago. There are 3 guest rooms on the 2nd floor. Ours was roomy and comfortable with period furnishings. It has a room with a sink and a toilet and another room with a shower stall. The room we stayed in features a huge oil painting of Dinah Washington in performance. If jazz is your thing, this is your place. There is a fine sound system in the living room on the first floor and we heard nothing but hip sounds coming from it. We also enjoyed the very attractive yard and the deck at the back of the house where we shmoozed and drank wine with other guests. Another asset we took advantage of is the Inn's location. Busses are right there. The Green Line train station is a 5 minute walk and the Red Line is a10 minute walk. This is a place that we can heartily recommend.

If you like a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere this is the place to stay. Welcome Inn Manor is a charming, warmly decorated turn of the century home. Breakfast is wonderful. Room was clean, and a good value. Would we stay at Welcome Inn Manor again? Absolutely! Caution: You do need a sense of adventure as this area of Chicago is transitioning. Properties is the surrounding area are in various stages of repair and decline. We certainly felt safe during our stay at Welcome Inn Manor. Vehicle parking can be a premium in the evening hours. Suggest using Welcome Inn's garaged parking provided at minimal cost. Look forward to our next visit to Chicago and stay at Welcome Inn Manor. Darrell and Lee

Thank you for taking time to offer a review. Like many parts of Chicago, there are new developments and venues on the horizon- 3 new places to hear jazz and several community gardens have emerged. Lots more fun stuff is underway according to Cultural Affairs and Planning. We look forward to your return.

The stay was great. I have never felt more at home and welcomed at a Bed & Breakfast. We were welcomed when we arrived and Mel made us feel like we were right at home. We stayed for a week and would definately return. Angie and Mell are very gracious hosts who made sure we had our plans set for the day and helped us get where we needed to be (thank you for the rides!). We especially enjoyed relaxing on the main floor of the house after we were out and about for the day. The house is lovely, and has easy access to public transportation. We were in downtown Chicago in about 20 minutes on the green line.

Enchanting home with lovely hosts in an interesting area of Chicago. Loved the opportunity to explore the nearby areas yet spend time in the middle of the city as we chose! For our 5 year anniversary, my husband and I decided to try a B&B for the 1st time and I don't think we'll ever stay in a hotel again! From the King size bed and fireplaces to the huge jacuzzi tub and dual shower, The Nat King Cole Suite is like something out of a movie. The pictures online really didn't do it justice. Mell and Angie are 2 of the most caring and kind-hearted people we've ever met. They went out of their way to make our stay perfect and Mell's cooking is incredible! Weekend Excursion

My girlfriend and I were looking for a weekend getaway in the city, and she told me to check out this place because a friend of hers recently stayed there. I went to their website and instantly fell in love with rooms and the overall decoration of the house. She was hesitant to stay at a B&B, but once we arrived and met Mell she was instantly at ease. The owners were personable; the house instantly puts you at ease and is so full of Chicago history. The atmosphere was very relaxing, the Nat King Cole suit was well worth the money, and the food was excellent…Mell and Angie we will definitely be back.

First B&B Experience

5 en febrero 26, 2012

It all started with my fiance' and I having the idea of wanting to have a weekend getaway at a hotel that had a jacuzzi in the room.....not many do....but then I came across the Welcome Inn Manor and I immediately told my fiance' that that was the place I wanted to go to. The pictures on their website are the actual pictures of this wonderful B&B, but still doesn't do it any justice. You definitely have to see it and experience for yourself! We had no idea what to expect with this being our first stay at a B&B.....but let me say this......you WILL NEVER feel so COMFORTABLE, feel AT HOME, have the OUTSTANDING HOSPITALITY, enjoy NEW AND WONDERFUL MEALS, and experience the TRUE RELAXATION that you are looking for at a HOTEL!!!!!! OMG.....Mell and Angie (Owner of Welcome Inn Manor) are the absolute best! They made our first and very nervous stay at a B&B so easy, comfortable and relaxing. Along with the great hospitality, the great meals, great conversations and the opportunity of meeting new people, comes the EYE OPENING AND JAW DROPPING ROOMS! Every room is breath taking! When we walked into the Nat King Cole Suite, my eyes became bigger than my head.....but when we opened the door to the bathroom, I immediately turned to my fiance' and told him that I NEEDED that bathroom!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I can go on and on and on about the Welcome Inn Manor, but my fiance' told me not to write a book and just leave it up to the people to experience the amazing stay that we had. Mell and Angie, we will definitely be back! Next time it will be for a longer period! Can't wait to see you all again. Many blessings of continued success to you both. Thanks again.

Happy to know my husband, and I were a welcome start to your future testimonials about staying in a home and doing something different. Again, we loved you and look forward to your return. Thanks so much for the overwhelming report on us. Love Angie

Welcome Inn Manor stay Jan 28-30 2012 Wow, wow, and wow that's the feeling we got from our stay at Welcome Inn Manor bed and breakfast of Chicago. Wow, was my first impression of this beautifully restored mansion. The many antiques and sculptures were amazing to behold. My second wow came from our host Mell’s cooking. This man delighted us each morning with a very tasty and wonderfully made breakfast. This was a weekend outing to celebrate my wife’s countless 21’s birthdays. It was our first time at a bed and breakfast as well. And I must say we are hooked, thanks to Mell and Angie’s inviting and charming setting. Mell I will be calling you soon to set up for my big five O birthday party there. Oh, I almost forgot the third wow was for the way you guys help make my wife feel, she wasn’t to sure about going, being, we had never stayed at a B and B before. Nothing she ever found on the internet really caught her eye. She truly loved your place and look forward to coming back. A added wow would have to be for the suite, it was so roomy and comfortable. The whole house made it difficult to leave. Jacuzzi tub with a fire place, and large comfy bed also with a fire place, the Nat King Cole suite is a must stay. Thanks Much Have a bless 1 The Loves

Beautiful house, nice inn keepers

3,8 en octubre 30, 2011

Welcome Inn Manor was definitely a beautiful place. The architecture was amazing and the house itself looked like an art gallery. I loved the inn keepers, too. They can tell you a lot about Chicago. Breakfast was great. It is not located in downtown and the neighborhood looked a little shady. I was just a little surprised when I first arrived there, since nobody advised me in advance. Some taxi drivers might tell you not to stay in the neighborhood, so that they could make some more money and possibly some commission from hotels. I don't think you need to listen to them. Nothing unpleasant happened to me. I can't comment on anything about the public transportation around, since I have never walked to CTA stations since I had a car. Once you feel comfortable with the neighborhood, you should try. I don't know why, but wifi didn't work with my devices without any reasons and the inn keepers couldn't fix that. They just said it just randomly happens. Also, they need to update their brochures, especially prices for the additional services they provide.

Respuesta del propietario

Thanks for the feedback and taking time to do a review. We appreciate your take on our lodging accommodations. Our part of the city is the newly ever-evolving Near South which is transforming and recognized as Chicago's best kept and hidden treasures- no traffic, limited meters and close to everything- and truly gentrifying similar to what is taking place in other renewed areas such as Renaissance Harlem, NYC. Our close proximity was apparently to your liking and we are so happy with that. Mell and Angie make this a wonderful place! The furniture and decor is sumptuous with interesting African and African-American art in all the rooms. The common areas invited relaxation in comfortable furniture and luxurious surroundings in this restored old home with beautiful woodwork. While it has only been open a year, it is a gem in the making. The meals were served in a lovely dining area and were delicious and different from the usual fare with local flavors and a wide variety of options. He took such care to cater to my vegetarian needs. Treat yourself to one of Mell's dinners in front of the fireplace! We loved hearing about the area and its history - wonderful conversations with hosts and guests alike. The quiet neighborhood may seem different from what you are used to, but don't miss this wonderful B&B. We felt welcomed and safe, and Mell takes care to be sure everyone is comfortable. It is so convenient to the University of Chicago, the trains, etc. We have already made reservations to return! Thank you for a wonderful trip!

So happy to hear you enjoyed our humble abode. I am especially pleased that my husband did not overdue it with his creative recipes and on the fly menu; which usually turns out great. Just happy to know he did not go overboard and his variety was pleasing to you both. We love folks from the south because we can introduce a number of really exciting recipes from my mom's kitchen. See you back again - soon. Love Angie

Meeting Mel

Wonderful host, and the houses location makes for 10 minute access to the McCormick Center by car. House is inviting and unique, and it is interesting to see leader like Mel restore this area back to its prior glory. Mel and Angie have renewed this home in a totally unique fashion that respects the past but allows for those modern comforts that we love. If you stay, do let Mel make you a dinner. It was cold and rainy outside, but enjoyed a meal specifically designed for our preferences.....and it was quite a romantic evening as we were wined and dined adjacent to a wonderful fire!

Happy to know you enjoyed your stay with us and the dinner venue as well. Good to know your visit was not all business and no play or pleasure. We are pleased that you and your wife were happy with our environment and the comfort of our place and yours. We'll look to see you next time!

Mell should be the next Master Chef!!!

We had the pleasure of staying at Mell & Angie's beautiful home while attending a trade show at McCormick Place. From the moment we arrived, Mell made us feel like family and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He graciously provided transportation each morning to the convention center for us. Their location is close to both bus and train so downtown is easily accessible. Their home is exquisite, so full of history and amazing art and our Lady D Suite was delightful. We were treated to a most delicious and bountiful breakfast each morning and our only regret was not having Mell prepare a dinner for us. We enjoyed our stay tremendously and are looking forward to our next visit. I certainly cannot ever imagine staying in a Chicago hotel again when the Welcome Inn Manor is has it all! Thanks Mell & Angie!

Thank you for the complimentary review about our inn. Good to know my husband follows great direction and does not embarass the breakfast menu's that my mom and I have created. Clearly he is no chef...but surely you have built his confidence level tremendously...and soon he will be trying to start a new restuarant at our place....; all I have to say is....NOT!....his head is swollen now so the thought of him as a head chef...is a bit too much!!! LOL. Seriously though, happy to know you enjoyed our B&B- and we look forward to your return. You are both lots of fun and a joy to serve. Love, Angie (and Mell- Not head chef!)....

U Chicago parent

Mel and Angie are gracious, helpful, and genuinely interesting folks. The combination of comfortable period furnishings (in a stunningly restored townhome) with African and African American art is unique and fun. The location worked very well for us- far enough from U Chicago to not be cloying and close enough to drive several times during the day. Also the EL is nearby and we were able to hop on (three and a half blocks) and get off within two blocks of the Art Institute and Chicago symphony. Mel cooks voluptuous meals and managed my food allergy with aplomb. It was a great introduction to Chicago!

Luxury, comfort, warmth and elegance

5 en septiembre 30, 2011

The location of the Welcome Inn Manor is perfect for those visiting nearby IIT (or, in our case, Shimer College on the IIT campus!). It is removed from the chaos of campus, perched within a neighborhood that is full of history, not the least of which is its fame as the birthplace of blues! The innkeepers are open to sharing lore of the location and the historic home, and truly understand the delicate balance between being host and providing privacy to their guests. During our stay, we had periods of ducking in and out, which was very easy due to the convenient location. We also wanted recuperation time after moving college students into their apartments, and found restful hours in the various sitting rooms on the first floor. This was a perfect place to share with another couple also leaving their freshman college student behind, as we enjoyed relaxing "happy hours" recounting our day's adventure and planning the next over a few day period. Most remarkable was the astute referral from the Innkeeper to enable us to outfit our students' apartments from items salvaged from local high-end hotels--this allowed us to imbibe apartments with local lore and a quality that was unobtainable from (too distant!) Target stores. We wish to have stayed longer to enjoy the fabulous (apartment-sized) bathroom, where you don't have to bump into each other unless you intend to do so! We'll be back to take better advantage of the romance offered, when we don't have to recover aging bones from manual labor! Thanks, Mel!

My Special Weekend With Mel and Angie

5 en septiembre 30, 2011

First of all let me say, it was probably one of the most special and wonderful get-a-ways that I've ever had. I can't really describe how awesome it felt to spend those days and nights in such a luxurious setting, surrounded by beautiful art depicting my culture. I felt so at home and at peace because every where I look my eyes touch on the craft of my people and my soul felt comforted and whole. Mel and Angie are such genuinely warm people.

We loved having you and you are lots of fun. Your social grace and willingness to inquire about the art collection, history of our home and the legacy of music and culture...touched our heart- and you too. Did Not Want To Leave

My stay was a dream come true for me. The physical structure was breathe taking and the grounds were beautifully manicured. The inside still leaves me at a lost for words. I felt as if I was living my dream as I visited each room, painting, artifact, and the silence of awesome. Mr. Mell, the InnKeeper, was very warm, resourceful and engaging; while making me feel like an old friend he was glad to see, not a patron. The food was very tasty and different. I could tell, as one who loves to cook, that our meals were prepared with love and caring. I so enjoyed the variety of teas, as a tea drinker. My room was quite homely; just wished it was a little larger. I plan to revisit in the summer 2012 with a new group of friends. The Welcome Manor Inn will be my hospitality spot and I will visit Chicago just to stay there again and again.

Elegance and Comfort

4,6 en agosto 29, 2011

My husband and I stayed at Welcome Inn Manor for a weekend while in town on a genealogy excursion. We like staying at bed and breakfasts both for the experience and because we believe in supporting local business owners. The Inn, a beautifully restored home decorated in a mix of both antique and modern furniture, is accented with an amazing collection of African/African-American art and collectibles. In contrast with our stays at other restored Victorian B&Bs, we felt quite comfortable lounging in the common areas, whether it was reading on the overstuffed chaise in the parlor or perusing dinner menus on the deck while sipping a glass of wine. The skillful blend of elegance and down home comfort at Welcome Inn Manor is easily attributed to owners Mell & Angie. Their gracious, warm manner and scrumptious breakfasts prepared by Mel, were accompanied by smaller touches, such as making sure there was hot water in the evening for our tea, or offering a glass of wine. Our only regret is that we would have liked to have time to explore the neighborhood or learn more about the Inn’s wonderful art and memorabilia collection. Perhaps next time.

Welcome Inn Manor was the best experience I've ever had at a bed and breakfast. The service was excellent, the food was amazing, and the innkeepers treated like family. We loved our room the food was wonderful. The bed and breakfast was great the place is not in down town Chicago so the five day stay free car service was amazing. Had we not had the car service we would have to call a cab the closest bus stop or train was about 5-6 blocks. The surrounding area is nice but other streets are still being revitalized so being from a small town I did not want to walk around in them.

A few of our friends were visiting Chicago for work/pleasure in May and stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor. Our friends invited us to come over to check out the Inn during their last night in Chicago, and we had a fantastic time! The owners were very friendly and welcoming, even though we were just friends of the guest. We enjoyed some wine in the main living room, complements of Mell, and had great conversation with our friends, Mell, and his wife. The rooms and decor make the Inn a comfortable, historically and artistically interesting, and very relaxing. Although we live close by in Chicago, my wife and I are tempted to spend a night or two at the Inn. If you're visiting Chicago, I would recommend staying at the Welcome Inn Manor!

What wonderful get away! This was my first experience with a B&B and after this experience I believe it is the only way to go! Mell and Angie are delightful hosts, they went out of their way to ensure that we had everything that we needed to make our stay effortless. If we had a need they met it. The B&B was fabulous, we stayed in the Nat King Cole Suite, perfect for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway. The suite featured a firm King size bed with beautiful antique furniture that made you want to relax with a glass of wine (which flowed all weekend) and take it in. This suite also features an additional room which was converted into a bathroom. The bathroom features a sitting room where you could meditate in the morning or enjoy a good book. I have saved the best for the last, in the bathroom is a jacuzzi made for 2. The bathroom also boasts all the comforts of home perfumes lotions etc... The Welcome in is my new Chicago home away home, a place where you can definitely feel the peace and serenity of a quiet getaway or a exciting tour of the windy city!!! Leave the light on, I will be home soon!!!!!

We have been doing B&B for 20 plus years and very much enjoy the unknown factor when booking a stay. That is doubly so when a big city is the destination. Mell and Angie provided a solid welcome and proved to be an excellent ambassador for Chicago. Their home is well appointed, the breakfasts were very good, their knowledge of the city is terrific. If your goal is to visit downtown Chicago, the community around the Welcome Inn, or the South side ball park you can't do better. The service provided and the positive attitude of the innkeeper made the week we stayed perfect.

Welcome Inn Manor is a stunning example of a restored prosperous family home of the Victorian era. The antique furnishings are exquisite and the relaxed familial atmosphere Mell and Angie create lets you enjoy their home as if it was your own. The bountiful gourmet breakfasts and delicious private dinner in the dining room surpassed the best B&B meals we've experienced. You could not ask for more friendly and helpful service. We thoroughly enjoyed lounging in the sunlit parlour and enjoying the coffee table books after a long day of sightseeing/ or Cubs game. We would highly recommend the Welcome Inn Manor. Welcome Inn Manor is exceptional, and exquisite. The entire house, and grounds are beautiful. The room (it was really more like an apartment) that I stayed in -- The Nat King Cole Suite -- was amazing. Incredible furniture, really spacious, beautiful bed linens, super soft towels, the BEST shower... I didn't have to ask for anything, because everything was there. My favorite part, though, was the Nat King Cole CD already cued up in the CD player in the room, just waiting to be played. I turned it on while I was getting ready in the morning. It was lovely. Breakfast was great. Riding the EL into the Loop was easy, and fast. We were eager to learn, and Mell, the innkeeper, taught us so much about Chicago, and particularly the Manor's neighborhood. Then, he brought us to a great bike rental spot. We got a great deal on great bikes (ie: well-maintained bikes that didn't have a huge rental company logo plastered all over them) for the whole day. We cruised along the lake front, stopping for lunch and drinks. It was a wonderful day. So, so, so glad I didn't stay in a typical, touristy place downtown. Thanks, Mell. We are bummed we didn't get to meet Angie! Next time!

Hospitality Plus

I've stayed at two B&B's in the past week. One met the usual standards of cleanliness, comfort and dining blah blah blah. The other was the Welcome Inn. Wow. In so many various ways, Mell and Angie's fabulous spot exceeded expectations. Hospitality is the first that comes to mind. My wife and I were made to feel so at ease, so at home. I was greeted by name when i stepped out of my car. We were offered a drink of wine upon arrival, a kind gesture that we appreciated after a long drive. We were given the run of the house. Mell regaled us with tales of the house, the neighbourhood and his hopes to made Bronzeville a fuller experience for travelers. The house itself is a showcase of lovely and intriguing art, from African masks to large colourful paintings. The hearty breakfasts were well beyond the call of duty. We felt that our innkeepers genuinely wanted us to enjoy Chicago and were concerned for our health and well-being (after my wife came down with a migraine). Overall, a lovely experience we were glad to have on our first visit to Chicago.

Top notch urban B&B

If you are looking for a romantic getaway that also offers access to great urban amenities and activities, you can't do better than the Welcome Inn Manor B&B in Chicago's historic Bronzeville Community. This is on par with the best urban B&B's in the country (including Brooklyn, NY's Akwaaba Mansion, which is also wonderful). Located near the DuSable Museum and not far from the Chicago residence of President and First Lady Obama, Welcome Inn's location offers plenty to see and do within walking distance. Or you can get cozy in a secluded hideaway of any of the impeccably decorated and appointed rooms, each a marvel of interior design and home-away-from-home comfort. I can't wait to take my sweetheart back for another visit!

The Nat King Cole Suite was spacious, the bed exceptional, and the linens luxurious. The Innkeeper's hospitality was gracious and very personable. We got the feeling that our needs and our comfort were at the top of his list. The directions here ask us to avoid hyperbole, but that is hard as this is such a special place. The Inn is absolutely gorgeous. The wood, the high ceilings, the spacious, carefully laid out rooms all create a feeling of peace and ease. We had a great time staying at Welcome Inn Manor. It lived up to its name. We felt so welcome & like family. Mell & Angie are great. We recommend the weary traveler package. Mell introduced our taste buds to many wonderful delights & Angie’s brownies are to die for. The Welcome Inn Manor is located close to the museums and lake and walking distance to the train. Mell saved our day by leading the way to the museum when our plans changed at the aquarium. We couldn’t have had a better time. The house looks just like it does on the web site. We stayed in the Lady D Suite. Beautifully decorated and the bed was so comfy and yes, there was room for 3 with the air mattress on the floor. B&B Gem in Chicago

I treated my husband to an in-town get-away weekend for this birthday and we stayed the Welcome Inn Manor. To say our experience was fantastic is an understatement! Our home away from home was in The King Cole's Quarters. In our suite we had 2 Fireplaces, a Jacuzzi, a Massage Shower, and a Reading & Meditation Area. Every morning we were met with a hearty breakfast to start off our day. One evening, we were able to have our friends over for an exquisitely intimate dinner party in the Manor's first floor. We started in the living room, feasted in the dining room, and lounged in the family room. Our hosts prepared an extensive multicourse meal, we indulged in wonderful wine pairings, and enjoyed brilliant conversation with our friends. Our New Chicago Home

5 en marzo 14, 2011

This is our second stay at the Welcome Inn Manor. We feel like it is our home away from home in Chicago. We feel fortunate to have new friends like Mel and Angie. The other guests at the Bed and Breakfast have been very interesting and fun. The rooms, service, and value are unparalleled. And the breakfast is amazing -- after eating breakfast, we wait until dinner time to eat again the breakfast has been so satisfying. We use the Welcome Inn Manor as our operating base to explore Chicago and to see theatre. We can hardly wait until this summer to explore on bicycle and join Mel's bicycle tour. There are simply not enough words of praise for the Welcome Manor Inn or for Mel and Angie and the experience and experiences they share and help to create.

I am the Executive Director of Knowledge & Wisdom Productions, Inc. We have rented this facility on several different occasions for our out of town guests. My guest were well pleased stating the hospitality service was impeccable. Mel & Ang are two of the warmest people you can meet. They really make you feel like their home is your home. A Friendly Place to Stay in Chicago

We picked this B&B for a special getaway between Christmas and New Year. The Inn was beautifully decorated for the holidays and had a warm feel. Mel and Angie made us feel right at home when arrived, by offering us tea. The rooms all had very interesting art and we spent time just looking at the unique pieces. The King Cole Suite was a treat with a huge whirlpool bath and fireplace. Breakfasts were an interesting mix of flavors, prepared by Mel. We were able to enjoy these in the dining room by the fire. Mel and Angie are exceptional Innkeepers; they know how to make you feel at home and pampered. They were helpful in recommending restaurants and sites to visit. Mel even took us to a local gallery, so that we could look at the masks we admired at the Inn. We would definitely come again as we feel that we have made new friends in Mel and Angie.

Welcome Inn is like a beautiful home away from home!

My wife and I spent a weekend at this large historical redstone tucked away in the historical Bronzeville neighborhood made famous for African American cultural art, music, wonderful brownstones, and good food. We were blown away walking in. The inn is filled with lovely paintings, sculptures, and furnishings. There is a chaise lounge for relaxing or entertaining, dining room with extensive wine rack, den with comfy leather sofas music and television, and a kitchen great for conversations with the owners and other guests. Upon checking in, house owner Mell Monroe had delicious split pea soup and hot tea prepared for us. Immediately we felt right at home. Mell was a great guide to the neighborhood and the city! Upstairs consists of two floors of rooms of varying size and theme of a different historical African American musician. We stayed in Nat King Cole Quarters, an incredibly spacious room. Cole’s music softly greeted us as we walked into the room. The bathroom is the size of most large hotel rooms with flat screen TV, jacuzzi, and a several sitting chairs in a sitting area. Our bed was comfortable enough to melt in. In our room was a lovely fireplace which Mell lit for us to enjoy a romantic evening. Upon waking, a delicious aroma filled the house for breakfast as we were treated to uniquely spiced chicken sausage, eggs, biscuits, and other continental breakfast delights. The Monroes made more than enough food, and made sure we were comfortable and any dietary needs were met. The next day's breakfast was even better than the day before and that was tough to beat. The Monroes are friendly, insightful, and are great guests! We will return soon in the spring to enjoy the lovely patio and yard accompanying the building for a down home barbeque hosted by the owner when the weather is warm! It is an incredible value for all of the services, great food, and hospitality. Exavier B. Pope, Esq. and Dana Todd Pope, Fine Artist

Great weekend getaway

My wife and I live in the Chicago suburbs but we wanted to stay in the city for a romantic weekend. This was the perfect place to stay. We were minutes away from everywhere we wanted to go. Very convenient! Mell and Angie were excellent hosts and made us feel at home. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast for the couple who wants to enjoy the city and themselves in an intimate, charming setting.

An Amazing Experience at the Manor Inn

5 en diciembre 11, 2010

My girlfriends and I hosted a Mystery Murder dinner party at the Manor Inn in November 2010 and it was an amazing experience. The atmosphere and ambiance of the Manor Inn set the tone for a relaxed, fun filled evening. We were treated like queens and seeing that most of them were mom's they needed to feel catered to and special as we enjoyed a party and our weekend stay. The dinner and breakfast was top notch. We've decided to make this a yearly event. We received excellent service in a beautiful upscale bed and breakfast space, in the heart of community, what more can you ask for. Nicole Jones....

Absolutely Stunning

Angela and Mell, the owners of this B&B are warm, generous and deserve the name "welcome". The Welcome Inn Manor is a meticulously restored mansion in the Bronzeville area of Chicago. I stayed here while transitioning my daughter into college at the University of Chicago. When I turned up on Mell and Angie's doorstep a little weepy from moving my daughter into her dorm, they lead me to the kitchen, opened a bottle of wine and made me feel like I would always have a home away from home, close by my daughter. The suite I stayed in was opulent; from the cushy bedding, to the fireplace across from the jacuzzi tub. Next time, I am definitely bringing my husband. Mell made a huge breakfast each morning and filled me in on the amazing history of the neighborhood and of the man who built this gorgeous house. I am so glad I decided to be a little more adventurous and not settle for a cookie-cutter room in an over priced hotel. Staying at the Welcome Inn Manor was less expensive, more enjoyable and by far more personal than I could have found anywhere else.

A unwind moment

What a different experience than a "hotel room." The ambiance was relaxing. This place had art, antiques, and modern amenitites..There were so many areas to unwind; the living room, the tv room, not to mention the bathroom, which consisted of a fireplace, whirlpool tub, shower with 4 jets, a sitting area with music and a tv. Highly recommend it.

Warmth on the Avenue

Everything about this cozy little Inn exudes warmth and the love of family. This past weekend our family & friends came together for a surprise engagement party. My niece had no idea it was coming and with the help of Mell, the Inn Keeper my niece's now fiance was able to plan this event bring together his family from St. Louis and her parents and friends in Chicago. The Inn Keeper went so far as to take down the signage in the vestibule so his home blended with the stately homes in the area (she assumed he was visiting a colleague ). After offering the couple coffee and cake Mell stepped out of the parlor allowing the proposal to take place in private. Within minutes we all heard the curdling shrill when the top was lifted from the cake plate. From there a wonderful evening took place. The food was great, the champagne was flowing and through out the Inn a warming blaze roared from the 6 fireplaces about the home. Out of state families getting to meet for the first time not across an isle but in a lovely cozy setting. It was a beautiful reminder of love and being in love. The Inn Keeper prepared all the suites with flowers, chocolate, and chilled wine. The happy couple along with their mentors stayed overnight to savor the enchanted evening. Mell (the Inn Keeper) along with the couple invited the parents and grandmother back the next morning for breakfast with the happy couple. NOW THAT'S SERVICE WITH A HEART & SMILE
