In January, 2015, we spent 7 nights at the Knickerbocker Mansion in the Mansion Suite. It was a full 700 sq. ft. of open planned living. The room had a king sized bed, twin bed, sitting area, outdoor patio, and 180 degree views. The luxurious, heated bathroom had a full sized spa and separate shower. The room never felt too cold, thanks to the wood burning stove and additional electic heater. It also had a private entrance. The property was impeccably clean and orderly, and the staff was top notch. The restaurant was the best in Big Bear Lake and surrounding areas. There was ample parking for the guests. The new proprietors, Ed and Vickie were hands-on throughout our stay. They welcomed us at breakfast and in the evenings and were always available. They truly are the ideal hosts. After the first couple of days, they became friends. Big Bear Lake has been our winter vacation spot for over 20 years, and we've stayed in self-contained lodges and Bed & Breakfasts. The Knickerbocker Mansion eclipsed the other properties in every way. One of the reasons we chose the Mansion was due to its proximity to town. It was only 3 short blocks to the town center. During the evenings, we would walk to town for dinner and drinks, and always felt safe. The streets were well lit and cleared of snow. The menu for breakfast is fixed, but they accomodate dietary restrictions if they know in advance. Every day that we ate breakfast, we had a large serving of fruit served with gourmet finesse, an egg dish and meat. I was full until at least 2pm every day! If you are averse to spice, just let the chef know in advance, since he serves with a New Orleans flair. We plan on making the Knickerbocker mansion our home away from home for years to come.
We loved our stay! The owners know how to offer true Southern hospitality. All the staff is great and goes above and beyond. Great place to stay with interesting history. There was aways delicious hot coffee and pastries set out by the stairs for the guests. A great dinner and breakfast experience. I probably gained 5 lbs but it was well worth it! Yum! Would highly recommend this place as into opinion it's a cut above other places in Big Bear.
We got recommended to Apples from a friend who formally lived in the area and they had rooms for us last minute so we arrived around 7pm after a long day of snow play with the kids and checked in and met the very nice owner and got some home made desserts before bed.. The breakfast was awesome and I was full past lunch time after chasing the kids all morning at bear mountain but it starts at 9am and the mountain opens at 8am so by the time you get to the hill your stuck with the crowds. We had a excellent night sleep and will be going back soon. Thanks Dave
I want to thank the staff and owners of the Knickerbocker. Your hospitaility has made me a long time patron. The Bistro continues to produce great food and your staff is spectacular. Keep up the great work.
This review is of one of the hotel rooms they have a few other room options that can accommodate larger groups. The two of us stayed in one of the lower hotel rooms for a three night stay. The rooms are small but comfortable and cozy. Building is an older building and walls and floors are a bit thin so there is a bit of a noise issue of hearing people walking around and footsteps above room. But this was a very minor issue to us. room was equipped with a microwave, small fridge coffee maker a gas wall heater and a gas fireplace. The front desk was very helpful and very friendly. This is a small operation here so on occasion you may see a sign on the reception door saying be back in 10 min. The continental breakfast in the mornings and the microwave popcorn in the rooms was a nice added touch.
Finally, a long overdue review! We stayed at the Knickerbocker in mid September of this year. We found our room comfortable, and very charming. We stayed in the carriage house suite which afforded us a fireplace and our own private deck. We had trouble getting the fireplace lit, but when we called the desk someone came right away to help out. No big deal, the pilot wasn't lit. Since we were in Big Bear to visit friends we did not get to spend as much time at at our room as we would have liked. I could easily return and spend part of a day just sitting on the deck and relaxing, reading and breathing the mountain air. We will definitely return. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a relaxing retreat walking distance from shops and restaurants
Magical mountainside retreat from the trail to the front door. Be ready for a slap of southern flavor and hospitality. It a must see property close to the village, high end bistro and experience.
I stayed here with my boyfriend as an early anniversary trip, and let me tell you, it was by far the best decision we could've made. Everything about it was simply AMAZING. We stayed in the rosebay room, which was a pretty big size. We had the best time ever. The staff was so nice and the food was to die for. Gunna make it an annual thing!
We were first greeted by Amanda and Sue when we arrived they were both very personable, welcoming, and helpful. Don (in charge of maitence) made a quick adjustment of our cabins thermostat, he also was very nice and took care of the problem promptly. Our little one bedroom cabin was decorated with a woodsy feel, and the fireplace and private spa helped keep us cozy during the chilly evenings in Big Bear. The cabin's location is ideal with a delicious Mexican food restaurant and bakery directly across the street and "The Village" a short drive away. We were extremely happy with the accommodations and the staff.
Loved this place it had it all, best of all was waking up with a cup of coffe that they supply in room, a fire and the best view of the lake, I'm sure there is probably better but for the weekend I thought I was in paradise, can't wait to go back. Go check this place out you won't be disappointed.
I stayed here for couple of days and the experience was excellent. I checked-in late evening and the staff supported very well in late evening for food and accommodation; above expectation. And the morning breakfast food was superb; very delicious and very well served. The staffs were very friendly, my 6 yrs old daughter still remembers them. I recommend this as best place in Big Bear for Bed and Break accomodation
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mansion. The owners were away so we were catered to by Alyssa. She was a wonderful hostess. The rooms and property are beautiful. The full breakfast was delicious. The location is perfect. We walked to downtown shops and restaurants and hiked up to breathtaking views. We would love to visit again and share their home!
Stayed at the Wolf Creek Resort for 2-nights and came away with mixed emotions. The service/employees are polite and the grounds clean and well maintained. The "Wine Room" is a nice change from the usual Big Bear bars, but get to the Wine Room early as the seating fills up quick. There is a large picnic/play area within the resort, but all dirt. It would be nice to see concrete pads under the tables along with path ways through-out. Replacing the dirt in the horseshoe pit with playground sand would be a plus. Our only dissatisfaction with the facilities is there is nowhere to get a simple snack item or drink outside of the Wine Room. Vending machines or a small snack/drink market would be a great addition. While the cabin we stayed in was very clean and appeared to be recently renovated (paint, tile flooring, tile bath and shower, and kitchenette) they missed replacing the mattress. The mattress was sunk out in the middle along with appearing to only be a size "Full." This made it impossible to sleep comfortably. (Note: I don't think a larger mattress will fit and allow access to both sides of the bed.) I was warned at the time I made our reservation the cabin is quite small, but I was completely unprepared for how small the cabin is. I can only fault myself for not heading the registrar's warning. It is nice having kitchenette and fireplace. Unfortunately, the fireplace smell was so overwhelming we had to open the windows throughout the day to air-out.) The fireplace smell resulted in a severe sinus headache which took most of the morning to rid. The following night was much nicer as the cabin had aired out by that time. In all, the resort is a nice and our stay may have been nicer had we stayed in one of the hotel style rooms. If we were to stay longer than a few nights, the kitchenette in the cabin would prove to be valuable. But I will only re-visit a cabin provided the cabin is without fireplace and has received a new mattress. Gary.......
