Wonderful stay in Brussels

4,6 en octubre 16, 2013

I travelled to Brussels from Ottawa, Canada in September/October 2013 and stayed at 70 Traversiere "Balcon Room" for 3 weeks. Very impressed with pretty much everything about the B & B. Booking was fast and easy. My room was large, clean and decorated with authentic European charm. Private bathroom clean and tidy. Jeanine was very nice and very accommodating with breakfast schedule. The best part was the B & B's location - right in the middle of everything. I would definitely stay here again and would absolutely recommend this B & B.

A real gem!

My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay at this B&B. It has a really beautiful charm and the room we had was absolutely gorgeous. The whole interior of the the building is just beautiful. The B&B was pretty centrally located. It was just about a 10 minute walk from downtown Brussels which was something that was really important for us. It made it easy to go out and site see on foot. Our only real complaints are that the shower wasn't capable of running warm water-it was either hot or cold, therefore we had to take baths instead of showers. Also-for breakfast we were served fresh juice, coffee and bread with jam/other spreads. If the breakfast could have been a little more substantial, that would have been nice.

Travelers, BEWARE!

While my husband and I agree with many of the positive comments that have been made about 70 Traversiere B&B, we had a negative experience which negated anything positive that we could have possibly added. We were traveling with our 10-year-old granddaughter and had made detailed and specific arrangements with the innkeeper, Jeanine, via email, for a particular room which would accommodate the 3 of us with 2 separate full beds in 2 adjoining parlors: the Baldaquin Room on the 2nd level. When we arrived we paid cash in advance for a "split booking" where we would stay a number of days, depart to do a week of travel in France & Italy, and return to Brussels for one night before our early-morning flight back to the States. When the first part of our stay was complete, we removed all of our belongings from the room, were assured that our room would be awaiting us upon our return, said our goodbyes, and left for the airport. A week later, the afternoon before our return to Brussels I, by chance, happened to check my email and discovered a message from Jeanine stating that the Baldaquin room, which we had prepaid for, had been booked to another party for 4 nights! She went on to say that the only room that was available that would have an extra bed for our granddaughter was the "Attique" Room. My husband and I are both seniors and I have a heart condition. The Baldaquin Room was on the 2nd level, but the Attique was at the top of the house on the 5th level and up 7 flights of stairs. Our granddaughter's "bed" was a cot. Since we had returned late at night there was no time to find other accommodations, so we were stuck. Jeanine never offered us a refund, a discount, an explanation or an apology. We will never again stay at 70 Traversiere, nor can we ever recommend that anyone else stay there. It was a terrible way to end what would have been a perfectly lovely trip.

An experience, indeed!

All in all, I enjoyed my stay at this b&b. I reckon the place has the absolutely craziest interior I have ever seen anywhere :) And this is, I think, can be both a good and a bad thing, depending on your sense of humor. Personally I enjoy all that kitchy stuff, so I found it just wonderful with all these crazy objects all over the place. The room alone was bigger than my own flat, and the private bathroom was huge, too, so at least you get enough space! The only thing to complain about was that you couldn't lock the door, which made me a bit susceptible about leaving my property there (nothing got stolen, though). The breakfast was very simple, a bit of a disappointment. But despite some bad sides, I would stay there again and recommend it to my friends!

I'd recommend this to my friends

We were both a bit disappointed when we arrived as the street is quite dark and gloomy but our room was lovely and light, Jeanine is charming and very helpful, the bed comfortable (even for my husband who's 6ft4) and in fact the area is handy for transport and the Botanical Gardens (and the bar there) are lovely. I'd recommend this B&B to my friends

quirky accommodation

A strange b&b. stayed in attick room, lots of stairs. no room key but place to attach own padlock and a chain for the inside. shower water pressure was great. floor sloped a bit which was strange. but at this price 69EUR it was good. rather charming.

Great place to stay

My partner and I enjoyed our stay here. Our room was huge! Our room, and the entire house for that matter, had a 'period' feel to it, like walking into a movie. Jeanine was very helpful as well. Would definately stay there again.

Convenient location, adequate accommodations

We checked in before noon after an overnight flight; while our room was ready, the backyard was being excavated and jackhammered all day, which made it impossible to try to nap for a couple hours. The room itself was fine (large double bed and a fold-out sofa; private bath); however breakfast both days was exceptionally ordinary (juice, rolls and croissants, jam, coffee). We don't speak French, so Jeanine was very accommodating to call a taxi to get us to the train station on Sunday morning.

Best Bargain in Brussels

5 en mayo 07, 2008

I have been a guest at 70 Traversiere 3-5 nights/week for several weeks while I am working in Brussels. It is one of Brussels' better-kept secret bargains. I've slept in three of the rooms, and all were clean and comfortable. The nicest is oddly absent on their website. It is a generous two rooms, with a private bath and a big bright window looking out over a Japanese magnolia in the back garden. The room called La Terrasse also faces the quiet back, and has a large private bath. The slight disadvantage is that you must step into the second-floor stair landing to reach the bath, and the bed is soft for my taste. The downstairs room (L'Intendant) may be least desirable to some guests, as it is in the basement and it faces the front at street level. The street is quiet, but occasional conversation or passing cars can be heard in that room. However, it has a large private bath, and is the cheapest of all the rooms. The neighborhood is safe, with a nice selection of small Middle-Eastern cafes and the Cafe Chambord serving Belgian cuisine. Jeanine can recommend other restaurants, as well. She serves a standard continental breakfast of rolls, butter-and-jam, and tea or (good!) coffee. Wireless broadband is also available. It is about two blocks from the nearest tram and metro lines, or an easy 20-minute walk to La Grand Place. Jeanine speaks limited English; Pierre is fluent; they and their teenage children are patient, helpful and unobtrusive.

Felt like home

My husband and teenage daughter stayed a week over x-mas. Madam Jeanette treated us like family, even took my daughter with her to a new years party. I wouldn't stay any place else. Comfortable beds hot showers, privacy, quite rooms, safe neighborhood, short walk to train, and VERY clean.

I have been staying at 70 Traversiere 3-5 nights per week for the first few months of 2008.

charming, comfortable and quiet

on arrival, we were met by Jeanine (a no-nonsense, lovely and very helpful lady), given a quick tour, then shown to our room. we were asked to pay up front in cash (which we expected) and asked when we expected to have breakfast, after which Jeanine handed over the keys to her house and left us to our own devices. the three of us stayed in l'intendent (basement room). it probably wasn't the best room, and seemed to be used to store odd pieces of furniture, but was good enough to sleep in and very spacious. The double bed was firm and the extra bed was comfortable enough - both with decent bedding. we also had our own large bathroom with plenty of hot water and kept very clean. breakfast (continental) in the dining room was simple but with the added touch of freshly squeezed orange juice. the house is unique, with high ceilings and located in a quiet area no more than a 20 minute walk from the main attractions. good value for money.

cozy comforts of home

Madam Jeanine, home is lovely, and very clean. A short easy walk to town centre, and train. We stayed in la baldaquin suite with our 14 year old daughter. The bed was very comfortable and we had a private bath, with very hot water. The room was warm, cozy and spacious, with plenty of closet space. It was very quiet, even with other guests in the place. There was a Television in the room, and she has wireless internet throughout the house which was a blessing for us in planning our daily treks. Breakfast was fresh croissants, rolls with jam and fresh squeezed juice, and coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The home is 150 years old and quite charming. The ceilings are ornate and detailed with many original fixtures. The hardwood floors in on the main room are inlaid and their are beautiful rugs throughout the home. Madam Jeanine was very helpful to us in local necessities and directions. The price was very cheap and reasonable especially when compared to some of the other B& B's in the Area. She gave us a discount for several days. I would stay here again, and recommend it to my friends.
