It lies in the valley of the River Char in the south west corner of Dorset at the heart of the Lyme Bay coastline, which is England's first natural World Heritage Site. Coastal hills rise steeply either side of the valley, with Golden Cap to the east being the highest point (617 ft) on the south coast. To the west is Black Ven, one of the largest landslips in Europe. Their geological and ecological aspects make them Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Jurassic limestone cliffs are continually eroding, revealing fine fossils as well as creating diverse habitats for rare plants and animals. Visitors from all over the world visit Charmouth for its natural heritage, as well as schools, education groups and universities. The Hensleigh in Charmouth is an ideal location for seeing the delights of West Dorset. Places to visit The hotel makes an ideal base for walking and fossil hunting. Hensleigh House is found approx 300m down on the left just before the road narrows. A35|Road|1|By car: Upon reaching Charmouth turn into Lower Sea Lane – Hensleigh House is found approx 300m down on the left just before the road narrows. We have level car parking for 10 cars. It is possible to pull up to the front door to unload if necessary however staff are always available and happy to assist with carrying luggage.
