NEPENTHE IS LOCATED IN THE RAIN FOREST OVERLOOKING THE VILLAGE OF EL CASTILLO, LAKE ARNEAL AND HAS THE SECOND BEST VIEW OF THE LAVA FLOW FROM ARNEAL VOLCANO. WE ARE 800 METERS SOUTH OF THE LINDA VISTA DEL NORTE LODGE AND 30 MINUTES FROM THE TOWN OF LA FORTUNA. THERE ARE SEVERAL GREAT RESTAURANTS NEARBY INCLUDING THE LINDA VISTA STEAK HOUSE, THE NEW SODA DE PUEBLO, THE SERPENTARIO , RANCHO MARGOT, THE FAMOUS JOHN'S PIZZA AND ICE CREAM IN THE JUNGLE ( JARDINE ESCONDIDO), THE LOST IGUNA, AND THE OBSERVATORY LODGE ( BEST CHEESEBURGER'S IN COSTA RICA) THERE ARE MANY THINGS TO DO BESIDES JUST RELAXING AND ENJOYING THE MAGNIFICENT VIEWS. WE CAN ARRANGE FOR HORSE BACKING RIDING WITH A LOCAL GUIDE. THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN IS WELL WORTH THE VISIT TO VIEW ALL THE INSECT, FROGS, BUTTERFLIES AND PLANTS OF COSTA RICA. THE SKY TRAM CANOPY AND ZIP LINE RIDES ARE VERY CLOSE AND THE SERPENTARIO HAS MANY OF THE LOCAL SNAKES PLUS A GIANT BOA - ALL BEHIND GLASS. THE LAKE OFFERS FISHING AND SIGHT-SEEING BOATS.

I did a lot of research on B&Bs in Costa Rica and this one had a few good reviews on Tripadvisor. I was NOT disappointed and would LOVE to go back if the volcano ever becomes active once again. The drive up to the B&B is rocky and at times steep - a vehicle with clearance is definitely recommended. (We never actually turned on the 4x4 function, I doubt it's necessary unless it's the rainy season.) The view once you get to the location is spectacular, and for the price of $85 a night, you can't beat it! The B&B overlooks Lake Arenal and has a wonderful view of the Volcano. It's located close enough to La Fortuna to take advantage of the main attractions around town, but then drive back to your own peaceful, secluded paradise. Agustin, the innkeeper, is very friendly and helpful. He made sure there were two cold beers in our mini fridge to welcome us when we got there. He had good insight on what to do and where to go if you were interested in more off-the-beaten path activities, which my boyfriend and I are. When we wanted to be typical tourists and take advantage of the hot springs around town, he recommended and made us a reservation at Eco Termales, a much less crowded hot spring that was perfect after a long day hiking. For the 3 nights we were there, we woke to a traditional delicious Costa Rican breakfast and strong smooth coffee. After our day out around Arenal, we'd return to soak in the hot tub and listen for the birds and howler monkeys. The rooms are clean and basic and everything we needed. A large shower I was nervous when I saw that there was no air conditioning, but on the first night realized it wasn't necessary because we were high enough on the mountain that the nights were quite cool. I can't recommend this place enough and would love to return on our next trip to Costa Rica.

Directions to property:
Travel West out of La Fortuna toward Arenal Lake, past Tabacon Hot Springs and Resort, to a "T" in the road at a small police station. Turn Lt. (South) on the gravel road and follow the many signs to El Castillo and Linda Vista Steak House. The next "T", just past the Arenal Volcano National Park. turn Lt. (West) at the "NEPENTHE" sign, continue until crossing the river bridge, then turn Rt. ("Nepenthe") sign. Continue past the Linda Vista entrance until on the left you see another "NEPENTHE" sign, turn Lt. up the hill until you arrive at NEPENTHE. The gravel road takes you through the rain forest jungle, along the edge of the Arneal Lake and along the base of Arenal Volcano.

Directions to property:
Follow road signs/maps from the airport. You will travel north through San Ramon and various other small towns until you reach La Fortuna. We strongly recommend a 4WD car, either privately owned or rented. The last 10 km from La Fortuna is a gravel road, and Nepenthe is located high above El Castillo. Also, there is no public transportation and taxis are expensive and not convenient for getting around to the various attractions.
