We had a very nice stay but their condenser/air conditioning was not working and unfortunately it was a warmer day than anticipated. We got a fan and had to open windows on a Friday night which was kind of loud with bars outside the hotel, but the rooms are lovely and I know the management was trying to fix the problem. Get outside room with window! There is continental type breakfast available.

We spent the worst night of our lives here at this hotel. The bed was touted to be a queen size bed, which we sleep in comfortably every night at home. It was either just a double bed, or, the significant sag in the middle of the bed caused my husband to sink into the middle of the bed giving me no room. This is not hubby's fault as he tried all night to stay on his side, but kept sinking into the middle. I'm a 56 year old woman and haven't slept on the floor in many years. If it wasn't for the fact that I'd have to sleep on hotel carpet, I would have slept on the floor. The next morning I told the girl at the front desk about my horrible night. She apologized, but I could tell she was just being polite. She didn't really mean it. I asked for the manager, she was out. I asked that the manager call me... no one ever called me. The lobby is charming. The room was clean enough. The location -- perfect. It wouldn't take much to tack that wallpaper back onto the wall, but that was mminor. Thus, I'm not giving it even fewer stars. But is it too much to ask for a good night's sleep? Mary B

The General Palmer was the perfect place to stay in Durango. The room was large and very pleasant; the location perfect. I highly recommend it.

Recently my extended family, my husband and I (6 in all), spent 4 days in Durango at the General Palmer. It was my elderly Mother’s birthday weekend, and several of her first cousins came to town to join in the celebration. We had two separate rooms, and I can’t say enough good things about our stay, it was definitely a 5-star experience. The hotel is one of the oldest in Durango, is located right on main street, so anytime we wanted to go out to eat, shopping, etc. it was just a short walk away. Unless we had to go out of town for something, we left the car parked (free parking) and walked wherever we went. The hotel itself is very well maintained, exquisitely appointed and beautifully furnished with antiques, period wallpaper, etc. The entire hotel was sparkling clean and the elevator worked very well and was a godsend for us. The rooms were very comfortable whether we were sleeping or visiting. The continental breakfast was awesome, there was a great variety of food and there was always plenty of everything. We enjoyed meeting downstairs for breakfast each day, lounging and talking for a while before starting our day. The staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful, greeting us each time we entered the hotel, and assisting us whenever we needed help. My mother uses a walker and they always were ready to help her get where she needed to go. The General Palmer is very well managed and was a great experience at a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend staying there when visiting Durango! We’ll be back!
