MOST INNKEEPERS PROVIDE A ROOM; WE PROVIDE AN EXPERIENCE: The Phillips-Yates-Snowden House c. 1842 at 15 Church Street Charleston, SC 29401. Now the home of Dr. & Mrs. Jack W. Simmons, Jr., the property was originally owned by Captain Timothy Phillips during the Revolution. The Yates family constructed the present house in the early 1840’s and it served as a hospital during the Civil War during which time it was struck by four cannonballs, two of which are now mounted on the gate posts. It is notable for its Adam style paneling by Thomas Pinckney and ironwork by Charleston ironwright, Philip Simmons, his most recent addition (1998) being the basement gate at the front. The Earthquake of 1886 leveled the 4th story, which was rebuilt with a Mansard roof. Subsequent to this, the structure was reinforced with "earthquake rods", bolts running through the house between the exterior walls. Almost 100 years later, in bringing the structure up to code, this same technology was used with the addition of nine more bolts.

This privately-owned bed and breakfast is nestled within the urban compound of Charleston's historic 1825 Edmondston-Alston House, one of the first dwellings constructed along the High Battery facing Charleston Harbor. Here, in what were once the stables, carriage house and slave quarters, is a sequestered guest lodging newly refurbished for discerning visitors to Charleston. Every amenity has been attended to including a kitchen pre-stocked with fresh pastries, fruit and juices, plus a gourmet breakfast. This is an ideal accommodation for couples celebrating a special occasion or for traveling families. The city's legendary waterfront promenade, known by Charlestonians as "High Battery" is only a few steps away. A stroll along the seawall to beautiful White Point Gardens offers dramatic views of Ft. Sumter and the glistening waters of historic Charleston Harbor. Within easy walking distance are award-winning restaurants, fascinating and important places of interest and the breathtaking church steeples that add to the Holy City's ambience. 21 East Battery was built in 1825 during the tenure of the property's first owner, Charles Edmondston. Later, in 1838, second-owner Charles Alston extensively remodeled the house adding significant Greek Revival details.

"I am writing to let other travelers know about what a gem the Vendue Inn, in Charleston, South Carolina. My sister, niece and I recently spent time at the inn and were very pleased with the entire experience. The staff was courteous, helpful, attentive and professional; the food was simply marvelous; the rooms were fresh, clean and well appointed and our time there was wonderful. I would recommend this gracious Inn to anyone looking for fine accommodations and great food."
