Roger and Sue are great hosts. They welcome you with afternoon tea and cake and follow that later with wine and snacks. The rooms are remind you of the English countryside. They wiill make dinner reccomendations and reservations at any of the local restarauants. This is a gem in the gold country.

We chose this B&B from a web search and were extremely pleased when we arrived by the location, cleanliness, knick-knacks, and friendly hosts. We stayed in the Bronte Room, which had a king-size bed and a large leather sofa. We were able to entertain about eight people after dinner so it was perfect for our needs. The only caveat is that there are no TVs anywhere in the building and we were there at the beginning of the World Series.

I and several frinds stayed here for two nights in October and we all enjoyed it. The ambience is delightful as are the rooms. Each room has special character and is spotless. I was in room Shelly which is a perfect little nest for one person. I loved it. Although it would be amall for two people, manageable but crowded. Breakfasts were excellent as were both the afternoon tea and evening wine and cheese. Nights are quiet and so sleep is peaceful It is an easy walk into town with its quaint stores and gift shops.

My wife and I were fortunate enough to discover the Grey Gables Inn and celebrated our first anniversary there. It could not have been more perfect. We occupied the Rosetti Room for 2 nights and were extremely pleased with the decor and ambience of the room and indeed, the entire inn and grounds. A stay at the inn includes afternoon tea and cake and an early evening wine hour. Roger pours a very nice selection of whites and reds. It was very pleasant to chat with the other guests and the inn keepers, Sue and Roger. The breakfasts were delicious and varied and presented in great style. Sue and Roger are gracious hosts and we look forward to our next stay.

A lovely B&B, great rooms, service & food, happy hour was a delight and everyone was so friendly. It's an easy stroll to downtown Sutter Creek, so no need of any car. This is a must B&B to stay at.

Rooms at Grey Gables are ultra clean and comfortable. Hosts provide friendly and efficient service. The afternoon tea and pre-dinner wine hour were just right with snacks and beverages that, while not over the top, were most adequate and right for the hour.

What a great place to stay in Sutter Creek. We have stayed other places, but we will return here again for sure. Roger and Sue's attention to detail is amazing. From the great breakfast, to gracious welcome tea (hot or cold) with brownie and ice cream. Perfect after the drive and a way to whet your appetite for dinner later. Spotlessly clean and welcoming in every respect.

Sutter Creek which is right in the middle of Gold County CA is a great place for wine tasting and the Grey Gables is the perfect place to stay. It is a beautiful B&B with superb hosts. The rooms are squeaky clean and very comfortable. A great breakfast, tea time and wine and cheese between 6 & 7.

Welcoming and friendly owners. Sitting room, breakfast room and bedrooms rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. A "wine hour" in the evening and a tasty cooked breakfast makes was much appreciated! Would definitely recommend.

We've been to MANY B&Bs and by far this was the most comfortable, accommodating, and beautiful B&B ever for us. The grounds had little garden pockets where you could sit and just relax by yourself or with someone special. The rooms were immaculate! Breakfast was absolutely beautiful! We wish that dinner was offered, we would have relished that as well I'm sure. We are positive that we will stay here again. I could go on and on..........we loved it. P & V, Northern Ca.

Can't say enough about this place. Clean, charming, quiet and just a block off main st. They make sure you have everything you need (including loaning us chairs and a blanket for an outdoor play). Breakfast was outstanding, and the wine/cheese hour in the parlor was a great way to meet other guests.

We stayed in the Byron and my sister and fiancee stayed in another unit. This was May 21 with checkout on the 23rd. It was awesome. Beautiful place, clean and the breakfasts were heavenly and the wine-hour evenings delicious and so much fun to meet the other guests. A couple from Tasmania was there. Incredible conversation and Roger and Sue were extremely friendly excellent host and hostess. We will be taking our son and his fiancee there soon. Oh, and the wineries, so much fun, fun fun.

This was my our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast and we must admit we were blown away. First of all our room was beautiful. Our cheese and champagne were waiting for us upon our arrival. Sue and Roger are two amazing people. Sue had me laughing so much during their evening wine and snack time. She has such an infectious laugh which made it all so fun. The accomadate anyone with anyone having any diet restrictions. Breakfast was amazing and mine was made special for me to meet my gluten free needs. We left feeling so blessed to have gotten to stay there and will definitely be returning. Without a doubt you need to try this place.

I stayed at Grey Gables for one night, in the Shelley room. It was perfect in every way. The host and hostess are wonderful and very helpful. The breakfast they served, a very hearty frittata, was delicious. I have friends who live near Sutter Creek and I plan to Make Grey Gables my home away from home whenever visiting them in the future.

4.6 on June 02, 2014
My only real complaint about our stay in the Wordsworth room is that it was too short! It was spotlessly clean and delightfully appointed. When we first parked, we were a bit confused about where to go, and by some magic, host Roger appeared outdoors to greet us and lead us in. He gave us a tour of the property, and smoothly dealt with the paperwork. And then we were off to a lovely tea, where Sue served us our choice of tea (of course), plus a surprise treat of warm cake and ice cream. We met other interesting guests who became our friends for the next day. At 6:00 there was a wine hour. Roger and Sue joined a bunch of us guests, and we all enjoyed wine, crackers and cheese, and conversation. And then breakfast. Oh, my! Sue and Roger took wonderful care of us, and the food was fresh and amazing. The whole experience was wonderful.

This is a wonderful place to stay. We were treated like part of the family. Loved the wine and cheese hour in the library. Plenty of wine and good company. Very homey and comfortable and very English, We were served a full breakfast both mornings and it was DELICIOUS. We were blessed with beautiful weather and enjoyed visiting the neighboring towns. There was live music Friday night on the lawn of one of the wine tasting rooms in town. The concert was free and wine and pizza were served (not free). I believe this occurs every Friday night throughout the summer. People brought lawn chairs and blankets. Plenty of chairs were available for those who arrived empty handed. By the end of the night people were dancing on the lawn and having a great time. We also enjoyed antiquing, hiking, gold panning and sightseeing. Next visit will be for wine tasting and of course we will be staying once again at the beautiful Grey Gables Inn. We also loved relaxing in the English gardens before heading to dinner. The gardens are an eye candy treat with the colorful roses, variety of flowers and greenery, secret spots with tables or benches, one are with a koi pond ....beautiful and relaxing and very private. If you stay here you won’t be disappointed.

We enjoyed our stay at the Inn very much. Due to our schedule we were not able to try their afternoon tea or happy hour. We did have their breakfast and it was very good. They were very concerned that we enjoyed our stay and took good care of us. The grounds are very well maintained like an English garden. A very good place to sit and enjoy the outdoors. We are definitely going back in the future and will make sure that we participate in their afternoon and evening activities.

5 on May 02, 2014
A warm welcome from Roger, unfortunately we arrived too late for afternoon tea but thoroughly enjoyed the chance to chat to Roger, Sue and fellow guests whilst enjoying the complimentary cheese and wine. Our room was very comfortable, the location is nice and quiet and only a short stroll from the centre of Sutter Creek. Roger's recommendation for eating in Sutter Creek was excellent. Sue prepared a lovely breakfast the following morning - wish we could have stayed for longer.

4.8 on April 04, 2014
Roger and Sue are amazing hosts at the Grey Gables. The last two years we have come to Sutter Creek to stay at the Grey Gables B&B and have enjoyed the food, the guests and the hosts. Roger and Sue sit down with you every evening over tea, cake, wine and snacks. The breakfast is amazing and plentiful and the coffee is strong. We stayed in the Bronte room which has a fireplace, a comfortable bed, a large bathroom and a card table to play games. The rooms are almost too clean and updated without losing that old English/Victorian flavor. Roger and Sue are great at helping you find a place to eat for lunch dinner, and where to explore in Amador county. Thanks to Roger and Sue we discovered Taste Restaurant in Plymouth and have been absolutely astonished with the quality of food there. I highly recommend a stay here for a romantic getaway and for the money its far better than most B&B's in Northern California.
5 on March 19, 2014
We love this place. We luckily stumbled across Grey Gables a couple of years ago on a long wine tasting weekend away from the bay area and have returned (and brought friends and family) many times since. Roger and Sue are lovely people and know a lot about the area...where to go and what to see. The rooms are spacious and nicely taken care of. The grounds are beautiful, especially in the spring and summer, and it is located walking distance from the shops, restaurants and lounges downtown. We really enjoy this place!
5 on March 04, 2014
Sue an Roger are just the best - perfect Inn Keepers !! Their place is so "English" - a wonderful change from everyday life. Sue is a great cook and Inn Keeper and Roger does all the "hard stuff" - (just kidding, Sue) - to make it such a wonderful vacation experience. We have been all over the world, including other B & B's in Sutter Creek, and will always come back here. It is, simply, the Best !! R. Michaels

We have stayed at Grey Gables several times and have never been disappointed. The comfort and hospitality make us feel at home. Add in some boutique and antique shopping right down the street and it was the perfect weekend!

The first time I stayed at Grey Gables was 15+ years ago. I was looking for a nice get away spot for my fiancee & myself - after a very hectic 3 year long distance relationship. Sue & Roger and their lovely "home" did not disappoint. If you are looking for a warm & inviting location in the Gold Country, this is your spot!

My sister and I stayed at Grey Gables in early November. The room was charming as were the hosts, Sue and Roger. We enjoyed the delicious breakfasts as well as the afternoon tea and early evening wine hour. Sue's recommendations on places to visit and restaurants were perfect. Grey Gables is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Sutter Creek with its quaint shops, restaurants and wine tasting rooms.

We enjoyed our 2-night stay at the lovely B & B. Our hosts were delightful. We were sorry that we could not take part in the evening wine & cheese, because it was scheduled from 6-7pm, rather late. 5:00-6:00 seems more convenient..

We just came home today from a 3 night stay at Grey Gables and I could not wait to share a raving review for Roger and Sue and their beautiful inn. They make you feel so comfortable and "at home" that it is a very enjoyable stay. The inn is gorgeous and the grounds are so pretty. We went in the fall but it was still beautiful. The room was beautiful, inviting and super clean and the breakfast is OUTSTANDING!

What can I say… Grey Gables is an excellent location for a weekend escape or retreat while visiting the Sutter & Shenandoah area. It offers beautiful rooms, excellent full breakfast, and afternoon tea and evening wine and appetizers. Although my wife and I were never in the area to take part in the tea we did manage to return in time to enjoy socializing with Roger & Sue and the other guests for a glass of wine and some yummy snacks before heading out to dinner in the evening. Highly recommend checking out Grey Gables.

We enjoyed our stay here but I think it's a bit overpriced. The rooms are a little creepy (ours had a Victorian dress in it) but the bathrooms are spotless! Close to restaurants, and the breakfast was good.
5 on November 09, 2013
The beauty of detail in this bed and breakfast has no competition. We were there during the week in the fall and there isn't much to do in Sutter Creek. But the B & B was fantastic.
5 on November 06, 2013
There is nothing negative to say about Grey Gables and the owners, Roger and Sue Garlick. They are natural born hosts. Everything about our stays there have been absolutely outstanding! We highly recommend Grey Gables.
4.8 on October 28, 2013
Just returned from 3 very pleasant days at Grey Gables in Sutter Creek. A wonderful B&B, extremely well operated, with every detail attended to. We were in the Keats room, very soothing decor and nice with bay windows onto garden. Could hear foot steps from room above, but the room is easy access to parking so convenient to bring in luggage. Nice large shower, excellent towels. The breakfasts were delicious. Didn't take advantage of afternoon tea, but the wine and cheese at 6pm was a nice way to meet other guests and hear of other ideas of exploring the surrounding towns. Sutter Creek very nice town, easy walk from Grey Gables, restaurants adequate. A lot to do and see not too far, wineries to visit, old Gold Rush towns and history to explore. Indian Grinding Stone Park a nice place to walk. Would highly recommend Grey Gables as an excellent place to relax and savor the Sierra Foothill Country.
5 on October 27, 2013
The gifts of hospitality were exceptional. Time spent over afternoon tea and sweet, as well as a wine and cheese hour at six, encouraged socializing with other guests and sharing possible local tour sites. Since there was not a dinner hour, the breakfast is rated outstanding.

Napa watch out! We stayed at the Grey Gables for a "girls weekend" which we have previously done in Napa... Sutter Creek was every bit as lovely but without all of the crowds. The Grey Gables was perfect- we have already booked it again for next year.

We enjoyed every minute--delicious breatfast, delightful guests, fantastic host and hostess and a charming room. The hosts were a wonderful source of suggestions for entertainment and local dining in the area. Our stay was a relaxing way to end our summer vacations! Thank you, Gerry and Merida Gruhn

My husband and I wanted a long weekend trip to the California "gold rush" area, and I selected this place because my first choice ( with a hot tub, which I love) was booked solid for the month. I was VERY HAPPY that we ended up staying at Grey Gables. The owners and managers---Sue and Roger Garlick -- are just wonderful, warm, friendly peope who did everything to make us feel welcome, comfortable, and entertained. Breakfast was served rather late, if you want an early start to your day (9:00), but I bet they would be able to get you something earlier if you asked. Coffee was available from 7:30 on. Breakfast was a 3 course "occasion", every morning! Fresh flowers, beautifully set tables with linens, crystal goblets, and bone china. A fruit course, a main "protein" course, and a dessert/bread course...plus juice...and excellent strong coffee. Afternoon English Tea was served every afternoon in the gorgeously decorated parlor. Wine and hors d'oeuvres were served every evening at 6:00. Roger recommended area restaurants, sights, driving routes, and anything else you asked for. It was fun mingling with the other guests at tea, and "happy hour". Our room was HUGE, and very comfortable. I loved the old claw-foot tub, and had a nice bubble-bath (bath gel provided) soak one evening. The queen bed was very comfortable, and the sheets were so soft!! I slept like a baby! Beautiful grounds and gardens, excellent location a block off main street in Sutters Creek. We'll be back! ( We had the "Browning" room, one of 3 rooms on the main floor. There are 3 more rooms downstairs, and one larger room on the 3rd floor. Ample off-street parking, but stairs to be negotiated, no matter which floor you are on...either climb stairs to get to your room, or climb stairs to get to breakfast...)

We stayed two nights and found it so relaxing and comfortable! The rooms are immaculate, and everything is obviously well maintained as well as clean. The rooms are very beautifully and tastefully appointed. The gardens are lovely and inviting, with several locations to sit a spell and take in the night sounds of crickets. The owners are super! Very social and fun to talk with, plus great for getting conversations started with other travelers during the wine and cheese hour in the parlour. They also cook a tasty breakfast and left me feeling quite pampered.

Excellent English style and comforts with personal attention from kind hosts. We appreciated the furnishings in bedrooms and parlor, and enjoyed the conversations with other guests, as well as quiet gardens for privacy. Delicious breakfast, coffee and tea. The location is great for a short neighborhood walk to the heart of Sutter Creek. Perfect for a wine tasting weekend. Don't miss the intl Cheese shop!

Would definitely recommend this B&B. Sue and Rodger are very good hosts, iced tea on arrival was just what the doctor ordered. And it was nice to have a glass of wine before we went out for our evening meal, which Sue had kindly booked for us. The room was clean and comfortable and breakfast was very good. Would use this B&B again.

What a wonderful stay in Sutter Creek! The Grey Gables proprietors, Roger & Sue, were welcoming and hospitable, and very hard-working. We arrived at tea time, with beverages plus cake & ice cream! A little later, some gourmet cheeses and local wines were put out in the ornate living room for all the guests. And the next morning they served a huge country breakfast - delicious! The rooms (and bathrooms) are big, roomy and exquisitely decorated and accessorized - the whole place is! The decor is a little "fussy" for my husband, but it didn't detract from our comfort and enjoyment. I especially loved the grounds - lots of seating areas and secluded English gardens to sit with a cup of coffee and a good book. Next time I'd like to come in the winter and take advantage of the fireplace in the room. This was our first time to Sutter Creek and we loved the charming town! Dianne & Roger Alamo, CA

We really enjoyed the lovely decor and comfortable rooms at the Grey Gables B & B! It was our first visit, and the location and accommodation couldn't have been nicer! We were pleased with the afternoon British tea time, and pleasantly surprised with the early evening wine and hors d'ouvers--not always available at other B & B's we've visited. We would have liked to have access to tea/coffee/cold drinks at times other than the "official" serving times, but they were not available. The original house has been fully updated inside with modern fixtures, etc. but still has a period style.

This was our first stay at this inn and it won't be our last. The rooms were spotless, quiet and well appointed. The breakfast was delicious and served with elegant tableware.

This was much needed get-away for my husband and me. We had such a wonderful, relaxing time! The room we had was beautiful - clean and very private. It was on the top floor of the building with no other guests on that floor. The wine and cheese hour was wonderful and the owners made us reservations at an Italian restaurant. We took an early morning walk around the cute little town and the had breakfast which was delicious! I would definitely return!

We had a wonderful time. It was beautiful time.

This is a beautifully managed and maintained B&B. The hosts had thought of every detail. The gardens with quiet corners to sit in alone or in groups. The themed rooms are lovely and immaculately clean. The breakfast was beautifully presented and the evening wine and appetizer service was held with the hosts who were delightful. They have been running this B&B for 22 years and know what they are doing and seem to still enjoy it. I would definitely stay here again.

You have to stay here!! Roger and Sue are fantastic hosts - their home could not be nicer or more comfortable - and the Breakfast, Afternoon tea / cake and Evening wine and cheese were spot on. If you are thinking of exploring the Gold Country - Grey Gables in Sutter Creek is the place to make your base!! The Smiths

a great way to start our California vacation. nice having tea and dessert on our arrival and wine and snacks each afternoon from enjoyable hosts.
5 on June 27, 2013
We stayed at the Grey Gables Inn in early June during the Barbera Festival and could not be happier with the experience! The Owners/Managers Sue & Roger are the cutest couple from England and they really make the stay a homely experience. The food is excellent, all the rooms are exceptionally clean and the decor in the home is beautiful. Next time we are in Gold Country we will be sure to stay at the Grey Gables again!

What a great home from home to explore the Gold Country!! Roger and Sue are wonderful hosts and their B/B is a work of love and care - more so than anyone could imagine until you stay with them!! Sutter creek is a great base and an interesting gold rush town!! Richard and Jacky

Lovely, tastefully decorated, quant, immaculate Victorian house, beautiful gardens, spacious rooms, current bathroom amenities, fresh and well kept in every way. The owners are most pleasant people clearly taking pride in their B&B as every inch of the entire house is perfectly in place and spotless. Generous afternoon wines and o'dourves were waiting for us in the living room when we arrived, beautiful delicious breakfast was served next morning in elegant old English setting. The whole experience was just lovely. We stayed at other much more expensive B&Bs on this trip, but Grey Gables was by far our favorite.

Nice place to stay, very quite and peaceful. Easy to walk to town and the neighborhood is also fun to explore. Cool old houses in great shape.

We were introduced to Gray Gables by friends who stay there frequently. Roger and Sue were the perfect hosts, so friendly and helpful. The rooms and grounds were well kept. We especially enjoyed reading in the garden. The food was excellent, far beyond our expectations. We look forward to our next visit to the Inn.

We have stayed at several B & B's, however this has been the best experience, quiet, charming, the rooms are spacious and detailed decorated all meticulously kept and clean. We have found the perfect get a way!
4.6 on May 22, 2013
It was impeccably clean and rooms were decorated very nice. Sue was very helpful with suggestions, dining reservations etc. we were the only ones in the inn, so we were a little spoiled! Never made tea, but the breakfasts were excellent and wine and cheese time made us slow down from our busy days. Quiet place, with a sweet garden. Claw tub a little high and a little difficult to get in and out of, but if that's the worst I can say, not bad!

We found the Grey Gables Inn to be an excellent place to stay. We will stay there again next time we are in the foothill wine country.

My wife and I stayed in the Rosetti room for our anniversary. We loved it! Perfect spot for a quiet romantic getaway, and we were impressed with the food scene in the foothills. Try Taste in Plymouth, Andrae's bakery in Amador City, and Susan's right in Sutter Creek.

This was our second time to stay at Grey Gables. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was outstanding. Sue and Roger were very hospitable and helpful with recommendations for dinner in the area. The gardens surrounding the Inn are beautiful and nice to sit and relax in, or just to stroll through.

I have stayed at Grey Gables at least 7 times in the past 15 years and love it! Other B&B's that I have stayed at do not compare. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable.I have stayed in 3 of their rooms and each one was a different but wonderful experience. The owners are very helpful and are always available to help you find a great place to try for dinner or to give directions to nearby wineries. Afternoon tea time gives you a chance to relax in a Victorian style parlor. The bake goods at tea time are always fresh and delicious. They have many types of tea and will gladly make your favorite. Wine and cheese time is another fun time. The breakfast in the morning is to die for. Fresh fruit, stuffed french toast, quiche, etc. It is never the same two days in a row and could be on the cover of Bon Appetit it is that great. I have stayed at some B&B's where the owners are intrusive and overly friendly but not at Grey Gables when you need them they are there with a smile and when you want to have your privacy they leave you alone. I have also stayed at B&B's where the rooms are filled with beautiful furnishings but are not functional that is not the case at Grey Gables. I can't say enough positive about my experiences at Grey Gables. I first stayed there with my Mom and sister and now go back every spring if I can with my daughter. I can't wait to return.

4.2 on May 01, 2013
Stayed at the Grey Gables recently and found the experience quite acceptable. The hosts are charming and the food delicious. The location really cannot be beat, just a couple of hundred yards to the main drag of Sutter Creek. The only true negative about the place was the volume of the air conditioner, so loud that sleeping with it on was impossible. I can see that during the hotter summer months that would be a real issue.
5 on April 18, 2013
What a charming experience! From start to finish our host and hostess and their beautiful B&B exceeded our expectations. Our two guests from Ohio were equally impressed with Grey Gables and it's overall hospitality. We had a wonderful visit.
5 on April 17, 2013
We were able to walk to the main street of Sutter Creek. We enjoyed dinner at "Taste", located nearby in Plymouth, delicious! We took a day trip to see the giant Seqouias in Calaveras. Breakfasts were filling and beautifully served on English china. We would love to return.

We are a bit late in sending this review, but in no way does that lessen the way we feel about our stay! It was our first visit to the Grey Gables Inn. We have stayed at numerous other B&B’s in Sutter Creek and this was far and away one of our best experiences. In reading the other wonderful reviews, we concur, whole heartedly – excellent hospitality, food, interiors, location, amenities, etc. I think the one thing that really made this a standout experience is something small that Roger and Sue did. Most B&B’s serve complimentary afternoon or evening wine with an assortment of hors d’ oeuvres. Most of the time it is a group of strangers in a room with seemingly little in common and no basis for striking a conversation (except for “where are you from?”). The one singular thing that Roger and Sue did, daily, was to join the guests at each sitting. It was natural for them to start the conversation with guests who had been there for a few days. This allowed for a natural flow of conversations and offered “new” guests an easy point for joining the conversation. This would continue each day with “old” and “new” guests and the conversation was always lively and often humorous. This camaraderie would parlay easily into the breakfast service where you were seated with “old friends” from the evening before, rather than strangers. Guests would compare dining notes from the previous evening and talk about adventures for the upcoming day. The simple act of being present during this time really made it so much easier for everyone to interact together. My husband and I are both talkers (especially me!), but recognized the value of their integrating all the guests, thus enhancing everyone’s experience. Bravo to Roger and Susan on all fronts! We hope to see you soon. Craig and Karla Garcia

This was our 5th stay at Grey Gables, We love coming back & are now introducing this lovely Inn to our friends!
5 on March 25, 2013
We had such a fantastic time during our stay with Roger and Sue. The guests were also very nice and the atmosphere was perfect. We stayed in the Tennyson Room - lots of space and great for three people! Huge shower and lots of storage space for your clothes. There's even a fireplace! The grounds were immaculate. They are the perfect place to stroll to enjoy the outdoors, or a quiet place to sit and meditate without interruption. All the food was prepared by Roger and Sue and absolutely to die for. The wine and cheese hour wasn't awkward and stiff like you might expect other places. It was a room filled with warmth and laughter that no one wanted to leave after it was over :) This B&B is so close to so many things. It's really such a gem and we had such a fantastic time during our stay there. We will definitely be going back and won't stay anywhere else while in Sutter Creek :)

Enjoy being pampered and treated special. It begins with tea and a sweet, followed later by wine and cheese accompanied by stimulating conversations, Breakfast the following day is artfully prepared, served and delicious. All of this and many wineries near by to visit and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the area. A perfect holiday.
5 on March 24, 2013
I cannot say enough good things about this B&B. Sue and Roger are wonderful hosts. Breakfast is always a treat. The rooms are spacious. The B&B is located in Gold Country (Amador county). And near by is the Shenandoah Valley with some 30 wineries - some great zinfandels.

We treated ourselves to a most relaxing and refreshing mini-getaway when we stayed two night at Grey Gables B & B in Sutter Creek, CA recently. We thoroughly enjoyed the company of our hosts, Sue and Roger, and their lovely Victorian home....decorated in the English style, we felt like we were in Britain! The afternoon tea was fun, wine tasting in the evening another chance to meet and visit with other travelers, and breakfast at the Gables is an awesome event! The rooms are a delight to be in, comfortable and immaculate---already we are longing to return!!

My husband and I have stayed at Grey Gables at least seven times and know we will return there again. Sue and Roger are such friendly and accommodating hosts, always willing to offer suggestions about dining, things to see and do, etc. We also enjoy visiting with them over tea and cake in the mid-afternoon or with wine and cheese in the early evening. Our favorite rooms are the Keats and the Wordsworth because of the lovely views and comfortable beds. The grounds are always immaculately kept and offer several places to sit and listen to the birds while enjoying a good book or whatever calls to your particular spirit. Everything from the beautiful English china to the ironed sheets shows how much thought and effort Sue and Roger put into making our stay memorable.

We go to Sutter Creek, CA often. It is one of the dwindling number of 49er Gold Rush towns that has remained unspoiled by development. We have stayed at the Grey Gables many times and, I am sure, we will stay here again. Th rooms are all spacious with modern baths and gaslog fireplaces. There is a large, Victorian-style sitting room and an equally large dining room where Sue cooks up some wonderful full breakfasts. The inn is only a short walk from the middle of town and there are some wonderful backroad walks that start just across Hwy 49 from their front door. You will not be disappointed staying here.
5 on February 25, 2013
We had an excellent stay. It would have been hard to find any way to make it better. Sue and Roger do a wonderful job and the location and facilities are our favorite.

5 on February 16, 2013
My husband and I went to the Grey Gables for a weekend getaway. What an excellent choice we made in where to stay in Sutter Creek. The b&B is located in a perfect area in which to walk to the main street of the town. It is a picturesque walk, past charming houses (which reminded me of some of the houses in Napa or perhaps even Ferndale). The Inn itself couldn't have been more perfect. Sue and Roger were perfects hosts, offering afternoon tea, cake and ice cream, and then when you didn't think it would get any better, wine and cheese hour later in the afternoon. All served up in their very gorgeous parlour. Breakfasts were great, coffee was good. The best part is that the Grey Gables looks exactly like something that you would see in the English countryside. All the rooms are named after poets and our room was the Browning. Loved the very English accents located around the room and our bed was very comfortable. Sue and Roger are orginally from England and I told Sue how much I appreciated her bringing a wee part of England with her to California. Oh, and did I mention there is a fireplace in the room! Such a lovely place. I would totally recommend Grey Gables as a place to stay if you travel to Sutter Creek. I know that I will be returning there someday.
5 on February 11, 2013
I want to tell all our friends to go visit Sue and roger at Grey Gables B&B Inn, in Sutter Creek. We were a bit disappointed at first that the Inn was a bit off the "beat & path", but as it turned out, it was probably more quiet staying there than on the main drag. We SO enjoyed our evening strolls along the back streets to dinner. Our room was immaculate, elegant and simple in decor - not too "cute-sie"as some B&B decor can be. We were most comfortable in the Tennyson Room. Breakfast was devine and reminded us of our time in England. Lovely linens, carefully appointed china, and scrumptious home made everything! Poached pears and an egg dish fit for royalty. We did not partake in the evening wine festivities, but surely Sue & Roger make that a special event as well. Everything they do is splendid and we look forward to returning to enjoy more of Sutter Creek and the outlying areas. By the way, Bellotti's for dinner was dreamy. Good food, friendly service, cute bar and Alfred is a good guy too! Try it, you'll like it! ~T. Lawson

This inn is a find! Immaculate, charming, and friendly. Roger and Sue were very kind to us. The breakfast, omg! Just like being in England. Make sure you take a walk down Spanish Street to get to the shops and restaurants. This street is right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. You may be thinking that staying on the main downtown area is a good choice, but we noticed how noisy it would be staying there. This inn was quiet and peaceful the whole time. We appreciated the two nights or the price of one. We will return to the Grey Gables again for sure. Thanks for making our stay a memorable one! PS Bellotti's Italian Restaurant was wonderful! Also, Pizza Plus! Great!!!!
5 on January 07, 2013
We have been staying at the Grey Gables for well over ten years. Even though the Inn is an hour away from our home, we love "getting away" for a day or three with great expectation of a wonderful and relaxing stay with Roger and Sue. The Inn is beautifully decorated making you feel right at home, with exceptional full size breakfasts and wonderful afternoon tea with wine and cheese to soon follow. One of our favorite Inns we ever stayed at by far!

Oh baby, it was cold outside, but warm and lovely at Grey Gables. Beautiful rooms and cozy comforts for the guests (tea/cake, wine/cheese/crackers offered in the afternoon. Breakfast was top notch. We have stayed with Roger and Sue at Grey Gables around the same time of year for 6 or 7 years now. Their hospitality and personality are exceeded by none and the breakfasts are out of this world. The tea hour and wine and cheese hour are always an added bonus

VERY much enjoyed our 1 night stay here. it was during the Christmas season and the house was cozy and festive. The host met us for the evening wine and cheese which made it even more cordial. The breakfast was OUTSTANDING. Every little detail had been delightfully attended to. The room was comfortable. I would definitely come again

My husband surprised me with this place for our one year wedding anniversary. It has been our tradition to celebrate our anniversaries with Band B's, so this has been our 6th. Let me tell you, this was a great experience. The rooms were clean and beautifuly decorated. The breakfasts were SUPERB. Service was excellent. The owners were very pleasant and easy to talk to. My only cons: The air freshner was a little strong for me. I had a horrible headache the last day we were there (not sure if it was from the air freshener) but I think it may have contributed. The door into the parlor area and kitchen were always closed. We were not sure when we could enter and when we couldn't. There is a wine hour and tea hour but we did not take advantage of this bc it felt as if we couldn't go into the rooms. Other than that, wonderful weekend!

We had a lovely one night stay at the Grey Gables. Very lovely inn and finely decorated. The hosts were charming and we enjoyed our chats with them and especially the evening wine tasting with all the guests. The room was clean, neat, and we loved the gas fireplace for a relaxing stay.

This is one of the finest b & b's I have ever stayed in. The place is immaculate, and my room was charming; every detail had been thought of, including things like night lights, flash lights, etc. The hosts were attentive and very helpful. What more could one ask for?

A first visit to a B&B is always an "unknown quantity". Our visit to Grey Gables was a terrific success. Roger was extremely helpful with local information, and the wine tasting and the breakfast menu were both excellent in quality. Thanks, Sue! I look forward to a return visit!

We spent our 41st anniversary at Grey Gables Inn last night. Sutter Creek is only an hours drive from our home. We ride our tandem in the Amador foothills a lot and are very familiar with the area, so we thought it would be fun to stay here overnight. We have stayed at a lot of B&B's in many countries and we think this was the absolute best. Roger and Sue are great hosts. We looked at their website, were able to see each room and picked the Byron Room. Their attention to detail is incredible. Very clean, quiet and perfectly prepared. Best of all...no TV. You park off-street and can walk to the Sutter Creek CBD via a back road that is lined with period homes. Sue recommended Bellottis Italian Restaurant and it was a great choice. Breakfast just like everyone else described in Tripadvisor - perfectly prepared and presented. If you are driving to Sutter Creek from the Sacramento area, I might suggest visiting some wineries. We started with our favorites, Perry Creek Winery in Fairplay, El Dorado County, then drove down to Amador County and visited Dillian and Bray wineries. You can get great lunch (in our case, late afternoon lunch) at the Market and Deli in old town Plymouth. If you continue on to Grey Gables and want to get there via back-country roads, head south on 49 toward Ione. About 2 miles before you reach Ione, turn left on Sutter Ione Road. Enjoy the 12 mile drive to Sutter Creek. Enjoy Room Tip: Check out the website. The rooms are exactly as you will see them.
5 on November 16, 2012
Our room at Grey Gables was very comfortable and soothing to the soul. The fireplace added to the ambiance as if we were in the English countryside. We enjoyed wine and cheese with the hosts (Roger and Sue) and chatting at breakfast with them and the other guests. It was centrally located for our wine tsting tours and charming Sutter Creek.

Everything about this place is Great. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The is inn is easy walking distance to town. Our hosts are very happy to make dinner reservations or recommendations at any of the area's establishments. They will also help you choose some wineries to visit during the day. My only wish would be to have more choices for breakfast. Quice is generally what is served on weekends and it would be nice to have something different. Otherwise it is a great place to stay in the gold country.

This is a fabulous B & B. Roger, our host, made us feel so comfortable and we so enjoyed our wine & cheese get-togethers with the other guests. We were 2 women traveling together and we were delighted that we were able to have a very large room that had 2 very comfortables beds. Roger and Sue have thought of everything to make to pamper their guests. Great linens, soft delicious towels, plenty of lighting to read by and books for us to read should we wish. The breakfasts were delicious and the tables were set with beautiful china. We would most definitely return for another visit.

We met up with several friends at Grey Gables Bed & Breakfast the last week of August, enjoyed an efficient check in and found ourselves in a lovely spotless cozy room furnished with tasteful antiques and comfortable furniture. We found our adjoining bathroom also nicely appointed with big fluffy towels. It was fun to gather with friends, other guests, and hosts Sue and Roger in the charming living room for afternoon tea and later for evening wine, and we can't say enough about the abundant, attractive, and delicious breakfasts Sue & Roger provided each morning for us, We felt very special, Parking was convenient and the grounds are charming with cozy spots available here & there to sit outside, The location of Grey Gables is perfect for strolling into town or taking walks. Sue & Roger were ready with information, directions, restaurant suggestions, and other handy tips which helped everyone have a simply wonderful time in Sutter Creek and the surrounding areas during our stay. We felt very lucky to have found such a great place!

Our escape to Sutter Creek was absolutely superb. The Grey Gables B & B was the perfect place to relax and unwind. Roger and Sue were very attentive hosts and provided excellent service - not to mention the wonderful breakfasts in the morning. As we were leaving, I took a line from one of our former governor's movies and told Roger - "I'll be back!"

We are a mature couple who stayed at Grey Gables Inn while visiting relatives in the Sutter Creek area. Everything about the Inn is a delight. Our room (Keats) was spacious, comfortable and quiet. The Innkeepers, Sue and Roger, are very gracious hosts who go out of their way to make guests feel at home. Afternoon tea, the wine and cheese hour and especially breakfast are very pleasant. The setting of the Inn on a lovely garden within easy walking distance of Sutter Creek's shops and restaurants is perfect. We usually try new places rather than returning to an Inn, but we intend to make Grey Gables "our place" in Sutter Creek from now on.
4.8 on August 16, 2012
This was the most perfect-in-every-detail B and B we have encountered. The decor throughout the Inn is lovely. The room was comfortable in every way including perfectly integrated air conditioning (important because we visited Sutter Creek on a 95 degree day). The host and hostess were warm and attentive, and sat with the guests through the wine and cheese hour. Sutter Creek is small, sleepy, and cute, easy to explore in about an hour, user-friendly with three or four restaurant choices. Altogether a pleasant experience.
5 on August 10, 2012
What a wonderful place to stay with very pleasant hosts and excellent food!
4.2 on August 06, 2012
Beautifully decorated in a Victorian style. No TV but that fact enhanced the feeling of being in another era. However we were grateful for the modern air conditioner in the Gold Country 100 degree weather. Sutter Creek restaurants close up by 8pm so this is a spot more for rest after a tiring day. Each room is named for a classic poet - ours was the Shelley Room and his poetry was featured at bedside. Beautiful bathroom with deep tub and good shower. Breakfast is the highlight here - cooked to order by the owner, it featured copious fresh fruit, cheese stuffed French toast and a bottomless cup of good strong coffee served in the atmosphere of an impeccably decorated period English dining room - with fine details such as napkin rings, sugar bowl with tongs, and stem doilies on the the stemware. There is a Victorian parlor with velvet sofas and chairs where wine is served in the afternoon. A great value in a very quiet town.

Just returned from a wonderful two night stay at the Grey Gables Inn. Sue and Roger were outstand hosts. We enjoyed the delightful breakfast each morning. The wine hour was an opportunity to meet the other guests and share the days explorations. This Inn is immaculately maintained and the decorating is a feast for the eyes. We will definately be returning guest.

We only had one night to enjoy all the aspects of the charming Grey Gables B & B; but, it was a spectacular lodging impeccably furnished in every detail. The B&B was welcoming with appealing curb appeal which transferred inside to the lovely furnishings. Everything was spotlessly clean. The breakfast presentation was stellar as was the food! We loved Roger & Sue and their gracious hospitality and would gladly stay at Grey Gables again if we are in the area. We will also highly recommend this B&B to family & friends! Truly a 5-star rating all around!

Have stayed twice now at the Grey Gables, Sue and Roger have a beautiful thing going. They both make an effort to chat and bring out the pics of all the work Roger put into the place, really extra-ordinary. both stays in the Rosetti Room at the top of the stairs. If you can make the climb it's well worth the effort. Will return for sure, keep an eye open for the deals. PS just drinking the local Amador Zin's are worth the trip.

Pleasant stay. Bed and bedding very comfortable. Disappointed in same breakfast both mornings of our stay.
We are very sorry our breakfasts didn't meet your expectations. Sue takes great pride in ensuring that she doesn't serve the same breakfast on consecutive days, so I'm not sure how this happened. Sometimes when guests have unusual dietary requirements there is an overlap because the choices we have available to us are limited. In this case only the guests with the restrictions would be affected.

Our stay couldn't have been better! Sue and Roger were both very helpful with local information and making restaurant reservations for us. Many thanks!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grey Gables. We found Roger and Sue to be pleasant and professional, and their B & B was one of the best we have visited, spotlessly clean and well-appointed. Their afternoon tea, and evening wine and cheese service was outstanding, of excellent quality and quite generous. We recommend Grey Gables highly and look forward to returning. Thank you Roger and Sue! You helped make our visit to Sutter Creek and the surrounding area most enjoyable.

We had a very pleasant stay at Grey Gables. The hosts are very cordial and provided good advice on local restaurants. The premises are very clean and quiet and the breakfast was outstanding. Sutter Creek is a great place to visit and there are interesting places and activities nearby.

Location was ideal. Easy walking to town and dining. Very quiet area.

Sue and Roger were wonderful hosts and the place was beautiful and relaxing. I felt completely pampered the three nights I stayed at this wonderful B&B and the food was delicious. I would recommend it to everyone!

We stayed here over Memorial Day Weekend and everything about it was a delight! The grounds were beautiful, the rooms were comfortable and clean and the meals were amazing. Even the happy hour was fun and gave us a chance to meet the other guests and chat with the hosts. This is walking distance into shops and restaurants and we will definitely be back!
5 on June 02, 2012
The garden was simply wonderful and the breakfast was superb. Everything about stay was exceptionally and we have stayed over 30 B& B over the last four years.
5 on May 26, 2012
On arrival we received a warm reception including an invitation to afternoon tea and evening wine and hors d'oeuvres. The setting provided the opportunity to meet with other guests, share experiences and discuss local places to eat. The hosts were most willing to make reservations at restaurants of our choice. Surprise birthday recognition with a bottle of champaine is memorable. We look forward to staying there again.

This was my first time staying at a B & B. The Grey Gables was a very nice experience. It was very quiet and the room was nicely finished. There was no tv in our room and had to entertain ourselves. So we walked the beautiful gardens at Grey Gables and then walked to the near by town for dinner. Breakfast was Fabulous! No fake eggs here! My husband and I enjoyed our stay and would love to stay again.
5 on May 17, 2012
I could go into great detail, but everything about this B& B is perfection. The rooms are beautifully decorated and super clean. Just like it was brand new. The grounds are quaint, peacefully quiet excellant representation as an english garden. The innkeepers were extremely courteous and accomodating, without being intrusive. You are greeted at check-in, and offered tea / coffee / dessert right up front. A great way to start off your experience. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful, and more than parallel to the theme of the stay there. Centrally located to all that you want to exploit from that area. Truly the best B & B my wife and i have had the pleasure of experiencing. More than "recommended". I give it 6 stars out of 5... (G & C, from Lodi, Ca) ...

We had 4 days, 3 nights at this beautifully appointed B&B. Sue and Roger anticipate your every need. Gourmet breakfast starts the day, tea and cake at 3, wine and cheese at 6. Suggested restaurants proved just right. The well designed garden is a delight on its own. It is amazing that Sue and Roger take care of it all. This B&B proved to be just what we wanted to be able to relax, shutting out the rest of the world. We highly recommend staying here for a few days to unwind and enjoy the surrounding towns and countryside, and wineries.

My wife and I as well as 2 other couples annually wine taste in the Gold Country and we just love the way Gray Gables treats us from the moment we arrive in the afternoon with a warm smile. They always have a dinner reccomendation or a new winery to try. I can't wait until next year to do it all over again.

Beautifully decorated, large rooms in a wonderfully maintained Victorian home. The gracious hosts, Sue and Roger, are from England and each room's theme honors a famous English poet. Wonderful breakfasts cooked by Sue and an evening wine and cheese get-together for guests in the Parlor make this a very special experience. A truly charming, romantic, and unforgettable place to stay in the Gold Country.

The Gray Gables Bed and Breakfast Inn is nice but you can tell that the owners/managers have been in the business for a long time. They seemed to be on automatic especially at breakfast. The Inn is very nicely furnished with antiques. It is well located to the Sutter Creek village district which has many shops and restaurants. This Inn is also in a super location for the wine country of that area.
4.8 on March 07, 2012
Sue and Roger have done wonderful things to create the delightful ambiance at Grey Gables. They are the perfect hosts making everyone feel welcome and "special". The breakfast is to die for and the evening wine and cheese events a delightful way to meet the other guests and make new friends. Sue and Roger know all the venues in the area and can meet your expectations. This is the perfect location to explore the excellent and growing wine produci8ng areas of the Gold Country foothills or for soaking up some California history. We would always select Grey Gables when in this area.

We have returned to Grey Gables Inn in Sutter Creek a number of times, enticed by Sue and Roger's gracious hospitality and beautiful home, kept in pristine condition. Their attention to detail and the thoughtful care they take of their guests is what keeps us coming back - and the delicious fare at gourmet breakfast time, afternoon tea time and evening wine and appetizer hour is always a delight! Grey Gables Inn and Sutter Creek are a highly recommended retreat from the pressures of everyday life!

Grey Gables is an excellent quiet place to stay. The hosts are wonderful. They go the extra mile. They truly offer a relaxing, quiet place to get R&R. The rooms are free from clutter that you often find in other B&B's. The room and Inn are emmaculate. The entire staff are pleasant. You will not be disappointed in your stay.

Grey Gables, nestled in the town of Sutter Creek has a romantic charm and makes for a good reason to plan a little gettaway. My husband and I have stayed at Grey Gables twice and look forward to visiting again. The rooms are all exquisitely decorated and each has an individual charm. We plan to stay in each room over the years. Roger and Sue extend such warm hospitality and go the extra mile in making sure everything is special. From the details in the décor, the lovely breakfasts served each morning, and the flowery garden, Grey Gables is the place to stay. Tony and Pandora

Having stayed at several B & B's through out the country, it is that close interaction with proprietors and other guests that make them special. Grey Gables is one of those places that seems to excel at giving their guests special treatment as a matter of course. Roger and Sue are the perfect hosts and the inn and food selection and presentation is hard to match. Thank you so much for an enjoyable stay. Craig and Bonnie Foster

Grey Gables is a lovely B&B. Our room was warm and well done with a wonderful claw foot tub that was fantastic with bubbles! I do wish the fireplace had been gas logs or real wood but it was very nice. The owners are delightful and I wish we had had more time to visit with them. Maybe next time:)

Wonderful little B&B in the heart of Sutter Creek. Small enough so owners Roger and Susan could give us a personal touch - at Tea time, Wine / Cheese or at Breakfast, they always took time to ask about our plans and interests. We loved the room as well. Decoration was classy and not overwhelming. When we return to wine country, we'll stay here.

We weren't sure about staying at a B&B, but this place is a keeper. Large, beautifully appointed rooms. Quiet, great food and Susan our hostess could not have been more helpful in suggesting places to dine (all were outstanding); and to visit (we didn't want just a wine tasting experience). The entire stay exceeded out expectations by far and we wouldn't hesitate for a moment to return.

The owners were an affable couple that offered and provided information that made our stay as good as it could get. Sue's presence during afternoon tea and the wine and cheese hour helped the guests open up to conversation.Over all I would recommend Grey Gables B & B to anyone looking for a nice place to stay while in the Sutter Creek area.

Warm & welcoming -- the property, the grounds and especially the hosts Sue & Roger. Third time we've stayed and it is now an annual event! Fantastic breakfasts, very enjoyable social time in the evening, the location is great - just 2 blocks from town, everything is wonderfully clean and inviting. Felt like I was coming home when I arrived this time..........

The Grey Gables B&B Inn is beautiful and the Garlicks are so gracious and welcoming, and offered so many little extra services, such as preparing a table in the garden for us to sit and enjoy wine and cheese we had bought in town. The breakfasts were delicious, as were the afternoon tea and refreshments. If you are visiting wineries in the area, be sure to get suggestions from Sue and Roger--the ones they recommended were terrific. This was a wonderful place to stay.

My sisters and I stayed in the Tennyson Room. Perfect Perfect! The Inn was impeccable, the room was bathed in bliss. Amazing touches in the room - small poetry books of Tennyson, the fireplace, a large bathroom with the best shower! Lovely lovely gardens. I felt so welcomed and at home here. Afternoon tea revived us from our road trip. We skipped the evening wine and hors d'ourves because we couldn't wait to explore the amazing shops in town. The breakfast of fresh fruit, placed as pretty as a picture on the plate surrounded the cream cheese/apple butter stuffed french toast. A side plate of nut bread to nibble with juice and coffee. Many beautiful homes and historic sites right out the back gate within walking distance. Sue and Roger were the most gracious hosts. I would DEFINITELY stay here again.

We could not believe what a cute town Sutter Creek was. Grey Gables B & B was beautiful and Sue was really friendly, kind and helpful. We talked about recommendations for dinner and without even asking, she said I will call them and make a reservation for you! How nice is that? The room we stayed in was really nice and the bathroom was very roomy. Wi-fi is always a plus, too. :)

We came to Sutter Creek for a wedding and were so surprised to be nestled in such a beautiful part of CA. Sue & Roger were the ultimate innkeepers. Their home and gardens were lovely and our room was spacious, comfortable, clean and private. Tea Time every afternoon was a delight and relaxing time to meet other guest. The innkeepers were knowledgable of the activities of the region so on our downtime we could explore the history of Gold mining and CA State parks in the area. The morning breakfast was delicious and nutritious and a fun time to talk with guest about things to do in Amador County! We would love to stay at Grey Gables again if we ever get back to the Sutter Creek region of CA again!
5 on August 13, 2011
Sue and Roger made our stay memorable. The rooms are very large and inviting. The wine and hors d'oeuvres in the afternoon were a very nice touch. When we are back in the area we will certainly be staying at Grey Gables Bed & Breakfast Inn. Great place and great hosts.

We had a lovely, if short, stay at Grey Gables. We were greeted with brownies and ice cream after checking in, which was very nice after the hot car ride. The room, the Shelly suite, was elegant and private. Their dinner recommendation was perfect. We went to the steakhouse and had a very good and very filling dinner. Sutter Creek shuts down at night, but we drove out to Jackson to catch a movie.

The owners are very friendly, helpful and accommodating. We thought we were going to be a late check-in, so I called ahead and Sue was very helpful in making arrangements. As it turned out, we got in early and they were there to greet us and give us a little tour. They keep copies of local restaurant menus and are very helpful in making dinner reservations for you. We stayed in the Rossetti room on the top floor. It is a beautiful room with a King-sized bed and en suite bath. All of the furnishings look like antiques, which definitely goes with the feel of the house. The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows, so all types of sleepers should be happy. The one thing I will say is that the room could be warm. Unfortunately, the air conditioner is in a little corner alcove, so you definitely need to have the ceiling fan on all the time to keep the cool air circulating, even at night. As long as you do that, the room is fine. We did not end up eating the breakfast, as we tend to be early risers, but I did have afternoon tea and the brownie was divine, so I can only surmise that breakfast was probably fabulous too!

We love Grey Gables. Been there twice and will return to the very same room, Tennyson. It feels like home in the Gold Country. Susan and Roger are delightful hosts and take such lovely pride in their establishment. It's a win-win! The tea hour, wine hour and fabulous breakfast are all pluses to the already wonderful feeling of Grey Gables. We seem to meet such interesting guests when we stay there. Such a positive experience. We'll be back in 2012 for sure!

On our way up to Tahoe, we wanted to take a break and check out one of the smaller historic towns. A friend suggested Sutter Creek and so I did some research and decided to book a night at Grey Gables based on the brief write-up on the website. I had fogotten why B&B's can be such a great alternative to over air-conditioned, densely populated hotels. This charming B&B was not only gorgeous and unbelievably clean, the hosts, Roger and Sue were so gracious. I loved the little details at the home and every need was met. The homemade breakfast was phenomenal and the "Happy Hour" offered nice local wines and an array of cheese and crackers. If you're going through Sutter Creek, make it a point to book a room at Grey Gables, you won't be disappointed.

Despite 104 degree heat, we had a lovely time. The Inn is like stepping back in time to a more refined period. Breakfast was delicious, room was kept comfortably cool and very clean, innkeepers and staff delightful.
5 on June 25, 2011
The innkeepers, Sue and Roger, provide an authentic English-style B&B that surpasses even the most charming of those found in the UK. During a heatwave of 107 degrees, the rooms were effectively air-conditioned; the gardens lush and green with fragrant flowers and shaded areas for sitting. Their graciousness and thoughtfulness extended into calling restaurants for reservations. Truly, this is a "golden" experience in the Gold Country.

We had a fantastic experience at the Gray Gables. The reason I rated the rooms only meeting expectation is because of their advanced web site, you were able to take a tour of your room in advance and book on-line. The hosts Sue and Roger were wonderful, the tea and wine hours were lovely and breakfast was just the right amount of quality food to start your day ! Not much to do in Sutter Creek but wine tasting in the Shenandoah Vally only 15 minutes away was wonderful. Would definately go back.

Loved wine with Roger and the other guests in the evening! This is a delightful Inn with wonderful hospitality. The best part was meeting Roger for a glass of wine and stories in the main room at the end of the day. I've stayed in many B&Bs in New England and so often I never get to meet the owner. This was an excellant plus to our trip.

The British owners have the concept of B&B down pat. Perfectly located home, neatly groomed yard and gardens, gracious but not intrusive service, spotless and tastefully appointed rooms, morning breakfast done with care, wine and dip served at happy hour. While the price was quite a bit higher than could be found elsewhere, they had an available king bed (a minimum requirement for me). Yes, I would go again, but not before checking to see if equally competent but more competitively priced alternatives were available.

We have stayed here several times and it is a great location for touring the Northern Gold Country and wine tasting areas, great rooms, and a fabulous breakfast. The Wadsworth room gets a little noisy in the early morning because it is in the front by the street that runs by. You can walk into town for several dinner places.

This was our second stay at The Grey Gables B&B Inn in Sutter Creek. I would recommend this Inn highly to anyone who wishes to have a very special get-away. The house and rooms are beautiful and immaculate. Roger and Sue are the best hosts I have ever run across--they are so accommodating and they truly enjoy people and it shows. My husband and I enjoy the "tea time", the "wine time"--and the breakfasts are incredible--over-the-top! We will continue to go back, as long as Sue and Roger are the innkeepers. They're the best!! I would recommend this B&B highly to anyone who wants to slow down and enjoy a quiet or a romantic get-away in a beautiful little foothill town. Also, dinner at "Taste" nearby is a delightful treat--rated highly in reviews. Enjoy! We do! I promise you will not be disappointed!

My bride and I went to celebrate our 33rd anniversary in the gold country and chose Grey Gables from the website. Roger and Sue were terrific. They are a warm and friendly couple. We completely enjoyed the B&B and plan on returning again in the future. The house, rooms, grounds, food and service were exceptional...

As usual Roger & Susan are gracious hosts. They take very good care of their guests. Roger made dinner reservations for us at Susans Place. Meal was good a little pricey but the service was excellent which made up for the price. The second night ate at J&D Steakhouse prime rib tri tip sandwitch yum yum. The town of Sutter Creek is like stepping back in time. Everyone we met was helpful, friendly and courtious. Had dessert everynight at The Emporium, my wife said the apple cobbler was excellent and I had maple nut ice cream, which I haven't had since I was a kid. The two days we spent touring the winerys and visiting the shops was absolutly amazing. The tasting room for Seri Fiena Winery CINQUE was a blast. Elaine made us feel like family, spent a good portion of the day right there. All in all we had a blast and will be back. Thanks to all in Sutter Creek especially Roger & Susan.

Rooms were nice but the heater cycling on/off was quite noisy. We turned it off and relied on the fireplace to keep the room passably warm overnight. Also, lots of relatively loud conversations emanating from somewhere up until about 11- 11:30 PM detracted from the ambiance.

We have stayed at Grey Gables a few times and most recently on March 9th and 10th. We have had top notch service and accommodations every time as Sue and Roger are the ultimate hosts! We so appreciate how immaculate the rooms are and their attention to every detail in decor (love the fireplaces in the bedrooms) and their fabulous breakfasts. The evening wine hour is a great time to visit with Sue and Roger and the other guests and to get suggestions on places to dine, shop and wine taste. And don't forget to enjoy thier wonderful gardens.....beautiful when in bloom!

This is the best B & B we have ever stayed at.Roger and Sue made us feel like family and made our 27th anniversary remarkable. Sues breakfast is to die for.A tradition is born as we are planing our next stay.Wine tasting in that area is remarkable.

Although we arrived late and were not able to take advantage of the wine and cheese served in the afternoon, we had a nice, cozy room to wecome us after a long drive. Great Breakfast in the morning. The Inn is located within walking distance to town, where there are several antique stores and unique dinning establishments to choose from.

A getaway with friends to the Amador wine country was made even more enjoyable by our stay at the Grey Gables. In a charming and comfortable English setting, Roger and Sue are terrific hosts. From Sue's delicious breakfasts to afternoon tea and wine tasting in early evening, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Enjoy a short walk to Sutter Creek restaurants and shops. Taste wonderful wines at nearby unique wineries. We could not have chosen a better setting and "home" in the Amador wine country.

We had a wonderful, outstanding experience at the Grey Gables Inn. The innkeepers are very enjoyable, detail oriented, and make you feel very special. The breakfast was delicious, and we also greatly enjoyed the tea time and the wine/cheese hour. The Inn is beautifully decorated. We highly recommend the Grey Gables Inn!

Once again we had a wonderful two days at Grey Gables. Sue and Roger are great hosts - your choice of teas with sweets in the afternoon, wine with cheeses and crackers in the evening, and wonderful breakfasts. The parlor provided a great place to not only meet other guests but also to spend time with our friends. (We brought two couples based on our last experience.)

We arrived at the inn and were instantly charmed by the hostess, the garden and our beautiful room . It was beyond immaculate and cozy at the same time. The breakfasts were elegant, bountiful and very tasty. We wanted for nothing. I have told many people about the inn with great confidence that they would not be disappointed. We will return as soon as our schedules allow.

Grey Gables is our favorite place to stay in Sutter Creek. Roger and Sue are wonderful hosts, making their inn a warm and welcoming retreat from our hectic world. The rooms are light and airy and there are no TV's or telephones to disrupt the tranquility of our stay. A delicious breakfast is served on beautiful bone china in a lovely English garden atmosphere. We especially enjoy tea time in the afternoon as well as the wine and cheese hour at 6 o'clock because it gives us a chance to meet our fellow travelers. The charming town of Sutter Creek is only a short walk from Grey Gables and is home to several excellent restaurants. Our favorite is Susan's. In addition to having wine tasting rooms in Sutter Creek, it takes only a few minutes to reach the beautiful wineries along Shenandoah Road. We know we will return to Grey Gables Inn many more times!

Everything about the inn was perfect, especially our room. Every detail and convenience was attended to.

Absolute delightful stay; Sue and Roger were more than accommodating with their helpfulness in knowledge of the area and where to go and what to do. Wonderful ambiance and a breakfast that was delicious and beautifully served. Also, above and beyond in having something for us with a 5:30 AM departure. Four Stars!

Our recent stay at the Grey Gables Bed & Breakfast Inn was an enjoyable time. The hosts, Roger & Sue are very hospitable and take excellent care of the Inn. They were very welcoming and the food was excellent! We will stay again in the future and recommend it to the others.

We were first timers at the inn and it won't be our last. Our room was spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated. Our breakfasts, teas and wines were more than you could expect (and just how many places serve you all three!). Our hosts Sue and Roger were very accomodating and just so much fun to talk to. We felt more like house guests than "customers". If you're looking for a relaxed, friendly and well appointed place to stay that is also walking distance to a wonderful little town, this is your inn.
5 on November 08, 2010
We spent a week at the Grey Gables during some spectacular fall weather. The Inn was the perfect location -- close to Lake Tahoe, all the wonderful wineries, Apple Hill during apple harvest, Calaveras county, and just a few blocks walk into town, which is very convenient for dinner. The Keats and Bronte rooms were quiet with comfortable beds and modern bathrooms. Sue's breakfasts were magnificent feasts. Roger's recommendations for wineries and places to dine were just right. And the afternoon tea and evening wine plus cheese were nice touches. Sue and Roger exude warm and hospitality -- you really feel like a special guest at their beautiful Inn. This is one of the best around. Karen and Tony

Thank you for a wonderful, quiet, relaxing time. It was interesting to learn that one of the other couples there have been there several times. They come to this place and will be back, I see why. You are treated like family, Roger even shared pictures of the remodel he has done which was very interesting. Great work! Will send others this way that enjoy B & B's!
5 on October 14, 2010
One thing that became apparent while talking to other guests during tea time is that we were mostly all return visitors. This might explain why booking a room could be difficult if not done well enough in advance. The people who stay here tend to come back, probably more than I've seen elsewhere. The inn is a charming English place, kept in lovely condition, with a small side garden. Tea time and a wine time could keep a person chatting in the parlor for quite a while. Breakfast is delicious, being more than a step above common fare. The old town of Sutter Creek is within walking distance, providing shops restaurants and places to see. Among inns still in operation, in my experience this one ranks highest. We will definitely be returning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing time at the Inn. It was deliciously decadent. We felt pampered and spoiled the entire time. The place is relaxed and the food just kept on coming. After our huge and very rich breakfast, we had another rich dessert w/Tea, and then wine and cheese before dinner. We never had room for lunch. Roger and Sue were great hosts and we would recommend them and their lovely home to all our friends.
4.8 on September 15, 2010
Roger and Sue have created the epitome of English hospitality from the quiet and comfortable rooms to the tastefully appointed table right down to the delicate teacups that make you want to lift your pinky when you take a drink. Although we only stayed one night, it was quite a memorable experience. Roger and Sue made us feel right at home and the breakfast was so good that I asked Sue to share the recipe with me. The gardens were beautiful and restful with several places to just sit and chat. My wife remarked that this was the perfect place for a "getaway" and I totally agree. You could spend the day wine tasting or touring the town or seeing the local sights, but when we go back (and we will) we may just sit around and enjoy the English countryside and excellent hospitality.

Breakfast was delicious, as well as wine and h'oeuvres and tea hour. I judge a good experience by the comfort of the mattress and shower with a strong flow. Bed was comfortable, sheets and pillows were soft. Shower fell short- the stream was weak and it took a longer time to shower. Also be aware there is no TV. Fireplace in my room was great.

We went up for the Amador County Fair for the Wine Tasting event, and we were so pleasantly surprised to find lodging at this totally charming and fabulous B&B. Our hosts were absolutely gracious in offering not only immaculately clean & comfortable accommodations, but offering us wine and appetizers prior to our departure for our wine tasting extravaganza. Out hosts were completely kind, and always ready to offer assistance to us.

Sue & Roger Garlick are friendly & helpful hosts. They had lots of good suggestions about things to do in the Sutter Creek area as well as where to dine. The property & rooms are very pleasant & comfortable. The inn has a very relaxed atmosphere. My husband & I never missed afternoon tea time, evening wine/cheese hour, or the full breakfast. All superb! The deal we booked of buy one, get one night free wasn't bad either! Great value! I am very happy to recommend this inn to everyone.

My husband and I recently stayed 2 nights and it reminded us of why Bed & Breakfasts are wonderful places to stay. We got two amazing breakfasts and the wine hour was a great way to share with our fellow guests as well as our hosts about sites to see. Our room was beautiful and very comfortable. My only advice is if you are new to Bed and Breakfasts then keep in mind that you can't do early check-ins and late check-outs as in hotel chains. But it's understandable when you remember that this is a small business run by a couple and so their resources are more limited. However the experience is worth it!

Grey Gables has outstanding inn keepers who are very friendly and helpful and keep their inn spotless. The afternoon tea, early evening wine and appetizer time, and breakfast were outstnding, although we were a little disappointed with breakfast as we spent two nights and the main dish served both days was basically the same type of dish (egg casseroles). The walls on the basement level are a bit thin and you can pretty much hear everything your neighbors say. The inn is located within walking distance of Sutter Creek which we really enjoyed and we were able to geocache while exploring the town!

We stayed at the Grey Gables to attend our son's wedding. Everything about the place was fantastic. It is beautiful beyond compare. Sue is a great cook and should write a cookbook. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Sutter Creek!

We have stayed in many Bed & Breakfast Inns in the Jackson area but the Grey Gables B & B Inn is the best! The hospitality, the breakfast, the gardens, the cleanliness, and the impeccably maintained Inn surpassed our expectations...we highly recommend this Inn to anyone!

This was the perfect way to start our trip to Lake Tahoe and the Amador wine country. The Inn was immaculate inside and out, from all the little details in the guest rooms, the wonderful gardens, to the fine bone china tea service. The breakfast, afternoon cakes and wine tastings were delicious, but above of all it was the attention of our gracious hosts that made the real difference. Whether enjoying their hospitality with other guests in the common room sipping tea, or discussing the merits of "Scrumpy" vs. Cider, Roger and Sue know how to entertain. They have created a perfect little piece of the old country in Amador County and made us feel both relaxed and nostalgic. They also provide practical tips on how to make the most of your visit (Roger even loaned us some snow chains to ease our trip!) and we have no hesitation in highly recommending the Grey Gables Inn. Thanks for a memorable time – and as the Governator says: “We’ll be back”! Debbie and James (Michigan and England).

We stayed for several nights in the beginning of March. My husband and I celebrated our 70th birthdays in the Rossetti Room. What a beautiful and charming room. Loved the antiques, clawfoot bathtub, and the fireplace. Naturally Roger and Sue were the perfect hosts. My daughter and I came last summer and enjoyed our stay so much that she and her husband said Grey Gables Inn would be the perfect place to spend our birthdays. The breakfast was beyond our expectations. Besides being delicious, the presentation was perfect. We can tell that cleanliness is important to them. The home was very tidy, clean, and charming. You will not make a mistake by choosing Grey Gables Inn in historic Sutter Creek, CA.

Our group of four traveled from Michigan to Amador wine country on our way to Lake Tahoe to go skiing. Our stay at the Grey Gables almost made it difficult to go to the slopes. The rooms were fantastic, the breakfasts were delicious, the afternoon tea was perfect, and the hosts were most gracious. We highly recommend a getaway to the Grey Gables.

My Mom and I go to Grey Gables every year for a night off. Sue and Roger, the owners, are wonderful hosts. The inn itself is beautiful, decorated like a lovely English cottage & with a matching garden. There are fireplaces in the rooms and our rooms have had chairs & a small table to write letters or play games. The beds are very comfortable, bathrooms are a good size and have everything you need. The breakfasts are delicious and Roger and Sue also offer a mid-afternoon tea and then evening wine & appetizer. There is so much to do in the area as well: walks in the hills, shopping, wine tasting, gold rush tours, etc. We give Grey Gables 4 thumbs up.

This was my first time at Grey Gables Inn. Roger and Sue were gracious hosts. We had the pleasure of dining with them on our first night at the Twisted Fork. The food and drink were outstanding. The next morning Sue prepared a delicious breakfast. Roger made sure everything was to our satisfaction. Roger and Sue have afternoon Tea at 3:00 and a wine tasting at 6:00. All in all the two nights spent at Grey Gables was very relaxing and enjoyable. I highly recommend staying at the Grey Gables.

As an aspiring inn keeper I have a critical eye for the finer features of the bed and breakfasts which I select. Following my first stay at Grey Gables I have added it to my list of top rated B&B experiences. Sue and Roger have created a welcoming English ambiance in the heart of the California Gold Country. Their most elegant and spacious home is circled by beckoning lush gardens. This was a girlfriends get away for a birthday celebration. The Tennyson, our impressively appointed and immacualte room (each is named for an English poet and contains samples of their musings) accommodated us with two beds, an unusual opportunity as distinguished from most B&Bs these days. Our palates were consistently satisfied between the scrumptious and generous breakfast, the wine and cheese taken in the comfortable sitting room in the evening (we were too busy to be at the inn for the tea sampling!) and the recommendations offered by Sue and Roger for wining and dining.... top of the line, "Taste" in Plymouth just a few miles away. If shopping is your interest and you have something particular in mind again the Garlicks are there to guide you. This Gold Country destination is both intriguing and scenic and well worth a return sooner than later. As you can likely tell by now, I will know exactly where I will be staying.

We recently visited the Grey Gables Inn in Sutter Creek, owned by a delightful English couple Roger and Sue. This home is gorgeous both inside and out. The interior is both immaculate and beautifully decorated with a lot of attention to detail given to every room of the house. The photos on the B&B’s website cannot possibly do the exquisite décor justice. When we first arrived, we were cordially greeted by Roger who immediately showed us around and invited us to enjoy the wine and cheeses set out in the parlor during the evening reception. In the morning, Sue served an utterly fabulous breakfast. The table linens and china she uses adds a very special “English” feel to the breakfast dining experience. Sue served a delicious homemade bakery treat each morning in addition to either a mixed fruit cup topped with yogurt and granola, or a mixture of fresh fruit served alongside the entrée. One morning we had an egg and cheese soufflé with salsa and artichoke hearts. The soufflé was so light, fluffy and flavorful that we savored every bite. The next morning we were treated to a hearty portion of apple-butter-stuffed French toast with a delicious mixture of fruit on the side, and of course the hot coffee was flowing all throughout breakfast. My husband and I were out wine tasting each day and didn’t make it back in the afternoons for the English Tea. We can only imagine what scrumptious bakery treats Sue would have served for the Tea in the afternoons. I would highly recommend the Grey Gables Inn if visiting the Sutter Creek or any nearby area. The accommodations are fabulous and Roger and Sue make you feel right at home. We would definitely love to stay there again next time we visit Amador County.

I made reservations as a surprise for my boyfriend's birthday. We arrived a half hour early than the posted check in time but Sue came out to the garden and invited us to check in early. We stayed in the Bronte room. The room was beautiful and absolutely spotless. They offer iced tea and cake in the afternoon and wine and cheese in the evening. We had dinner reservations so we did not partake. Breakfast the next morning was delicious. Fresh fruit cup with Devonshire cream, and a wonderful frittata. It was a bit noisy overheard. We were on the ground floor and we could hear just about everything from the room above us but was a minor inconvenience considering. We'll definately be back.

My wife and I travel to the gold country at least twice a year to visit the excellent wineries in the area. We found Grey Gables through the local Chamber of Commerce fourteen years ago - and would never dream of going elsewhere! Roger and Sue are the perfect innkeepers, friendly and efficient. The Inn is immaculate, pristine clean, and super comfortable. Gas fireplaces in all rooms for those fall and winter evenings, air conditioning when summer demands. Breakfast is a delight, providing all that is needed before touring around the area. Tea is provided in the afternoon and wine with appetizers in the early evening sitting with newly made friends in the parlor. An easy walk to town for evening dinner and back to the Inn to relax. In a word - perfect.

We were the only couple staying in the inn and were given the royal treatment. Roger told us about a great restaurant for dinner in Sutter Creek called Susan's Place. The bed was very comfortable and we awoke to a great breakfast prepared by Sue. One of the best things about this bnb is that all of Sutter Creek is walking distance from it.

This was our first time visiting a bed and breakfast. The rooms were very beautiful and nicely decorated. The breakfast was fabulous and tea in the afternoon with a dessert was a real treat. The only thing we were disappointed in was the bed, it wasn't very comfortable. Other than that everything was first class. If you visit Sutter Creek be sure to stay at Grey Gables, it's worth the visit.
