I really enjoyed staying at Prufrock's. The great things about this B&B begin with it's location: Carpenteria is still a sleepy beach town, unlike Santa Barbara (which is still a really easy 5 minute drive away). Also, Prufrock's is right on the... read more

Innkeeper Response
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and took time to write such a thorough evaluation. Your response to the opportunities right out the door is that of most of our guests. Some don't even move their cars until ready to leave. But even though the beach and all the options for dining and browsing are right out the door, it isn't overly busy as it is right downtown. So many do drive the ten minutes to downtown and retreat to the beach and relaxation of the inn. We do look forward to your return.

Innkeeper Response
We regret that you experienced inadequate pressure from the shower head in your room and thank you for bringing it to our attention. It is true that we have tried to balance environmental concerns and guest comforts "green hospitality" but we never want it to negatively impact guest experiences. The problem has been corrected with new showerheads that give guests a choice of high or low flow. We want you back for 4th, 5th and many future visits. Mention this note and your next night is on us. Again, we appreciate your bringing this to our attention and look forward to your return. Thank you.

The extra details and extras you mention are one of the things that make bed and breakfast inns such a welcome change from 'cookie-cutter' motels and hotels. We love the experience when we travel and are glad you did as well. We think of it as 'Home away from Home'. We're thrilled that you felt cared for and pampered and that you let us know. Many thanks!

Innkeeper Response
This review is surprising to us and we sure want take responsibility for any failing on our part. We introduced these guests to others at the breakfast table as the couple celebrating 57 years. These other guests included honeymooners and an enjoyable interchange occured. We were very impressed with this couple and the story of their lives and therefore regret that they didn't feel that their anniversary was adequately recognized. We celebrate many anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons, and other special events at Prufrock's and want all to be recognized in the way each desires. We try to get it right but obviously didn't in this case and are sorry for it. As to the other two issues mentioned, we are one block from the Amtrak station. Many of our guests ride the train and enjoy being 'carfree' with the beach and other options so close. All Santa Barbara area inns that are close to the beach are close to the train but few have galleries, cafes, antiques, grocery and other options so close. And as to checkin, ours does begin at 4PM and all bathrooms are connected to guest rooms. We protect guest privacy and therefore don't have a way to accommodate other bathroom needs. To these special guests, we are sorry and your next weeknight stay is on us. Remind us when you call.

We love to 'hook' first timers. It is not only good for us but for all BnB's around the country. We recently had guests from Florida who were first timers and then took a New England trip and stayed exclusively in BnB's. They thanked us for introducing them to this great alternative travel opportunity. Many love this way to 'be at home away from home' and we love being a part of it.

Review Prufrock's Garden Inn by the Beach, Santa Barbara (Carpinteria), CA

Photo Album

Garden Porch rooms (Garden Hideaway and Village Charm) have French doors with ten-light insets that open to porch areas with gliders and bistro tables. Open the insets and the garden seems to come inside. Have treats or breakfast on your porch if you prefer solitude to the group
conversation in the dining room. It's also a great place for afternoon tea time.We are Judy and Jim Halvorsen, owner/innkeepers of Prufrocks. We look forward to the opportunity to provide you the special hospitality which has become synonomous with a Prufrock's stay. Guests return again and again and reflect on the uniqueness of this special place. Some marry in our gardens or on the beach. Some enjoy memorable honeymoons or anniversaries. Many celebrate birthdays or other special occasions. And others find it their place by the beach whether working, vacationing, or visiting family or friends. Prufrocks is hospitality, not just a room. Come and see. If you're like our many other guests, we'll see you again and again.
Prufrock's "It's a Home"! And guests from around the world enjoy time by the fireplace during breakfast, afternoon tea, or anytime they choose. Treats and drinks are always available and you can borrow from our library if you forget that book you're reading. High speed internet is also available. The setting is conducive to relaxation, reading, and rich conversation. The touches of the historic home add a warmth seldom found in hotels and motels. Whether traveling on business or taking a relaxing romantic getaway you will leave Prufrock's refreshed. The aroma of fresh flowers and other beautiful touches invite guests to breakfast or afternoon tea in the living-dining room. Linger and savor the homemade delicacies alone or with other guests. Share tips on favorite activities and restaurants in the area. One guest commented, "I've always found it hard to leave home, I guess that's why it's so hard to leave Prufrocks".
Ocean Breeze and Mountain View will lift your spirits with their cheerful decor. Sunlight streams in and slanted ceilings add a special charm as the ceiling fan moves ocean breezes. The queen-sized bed is cozily dressed with an ocean-blue and white quilt, accented by white Batten burg lace. Enjoy coffee at your sitting table, by the fireplace, or read on the day bed tucked in the corner. These upstairs' rooms share a full bath with tub and shower. The view from the front porch captures the charm of the village with a dramatic backdrop of the Los Padres National Forest Mountain Wilderness. Stroll the village shops and cafes or the beach park. Walk to the protected seal refuge and see the pups during season. Borrow our beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and boogie boards and enjoy "One of the World's Best Beaches" (National Geographic Traveler). There is much to do while you leave your car in the lot.
The gardens have variety year round. Fountains and fireplaces draw you to sit down and relax and listen. Many guests bring their treats and a good book to the gardens and almost forget to leave. The area is known for orchards and flower fields and these gardens will encourage further exploration. You will be welcomed from the time you arrive. Every attempt will be made to provide the privacy you desire and also the opportunity to connect with hosts and other guests. Professional and personal hospitality are both considered important and we believe you will feel the difference this awareness makes.
