And if the walls of the Monte Cristo could talk, what stories they could tell, for this remarkable building has been a part of San Francisco since 1875. Originally built as a bordello and saloon. In the 1920s, it served as a speakeasy. When the great fire swept the city after the 1906 earthquake, homes were put to the torch on Van Ness Avenue to create a firebreak, and the Saloon not only survived, it served as a refuge for the newly post-quake homeless. The Inn is perhaps the oldest original hospitality structure in San Francisco, this European-style Inn is convenient to the entire city and is at the junction of three great neighborhoods, Presidio Heights, Pacific Heights, and Laurel Heights. It is in one of the oldest and best neighborhoods in San Francisco. It is two blocks to the elegantly restored Victorian shops, Vogue theatre, Zagat-rated restaurants and antique stores on Sacramento Street. It's within walking distance to shopping on Union Street and Fillmore Street.

We had a great time at this quaint, immaculate B&B. It is centrally located in the "best city in the world" in a residential neighborhood near a college campus but away form the major traffic hubs like Fisherman's wharf, Union Sq. and the Fin Cntr. Our room was absolutely fantastic and the morning coffee and quaint breakfast was delicious. We will be back!!!!

While visiting relatives we chose the Monte Cristo for it's convenient location. We stayed in room 6 on the first floor. It was clean, spacious and well appointed. The owner has done a wonderful job of updating this B&B while keeping the integrity of its historical architecture. The staff was more than friendly and the breakfast was delicious. Fresh fruit, bakery, yogurt, juice, and coffee were always offered but you could also order eggs, bacon, and toast. We will most definitely stay here again when we're in the Bay Area.

first room we stayed in was GREAT!!!! then because we made a last minute decision to stay longer, that room was no longer available so we had to move to the room next door Service was fantastic, helping us, etc but the room was smaller, the bath smaller, and just not up to the standards of the first room. I guess we should have stayed in the second room first, and then moved and the experience would have been different.

The location was very good for us...a quiet neighborhood. Parking our rental car was no problem. The bathroom had just been beautifully renovated, but towel bars had not been installed, and Kleenex was absent. Breakfast and afternoon snacks very good. Checkout a little confusing (no front desk person on duty)...we checked out informally with the cook. Would definitely stay here again.

This was my fourth stay at the Monte Cristo and it gets better each time. Jack and his staff are very accommodating and helpful at every turn. Even though the place was full to capacity (during the week!) there was very little noise or distraction, everyone friendly. Parking is free on the streets and it is close to every convenience. Just a short walk to restaurants, grocery, etc. I love staying here and highly recommend if you want the B&B experience.
