Monte Cristo

We have stayed at the Monte Cristo three times over the last two years and have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and professional. If we need anything they are right there to help. The breakfast is the best ever for a continental style. They will even cook eggs if you would like. We will stay there again and again.

I was very pleased with our stay at Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast! The ambiance is very charming and the staff is very friendly. I thought the location in the city where you find Monte Cristo is perfect as well. So yes, I would recommend Monte Cristo to anyone looking for a nice stay in SF !

Beautiful hidden gem is San Francisco. Jack and Carl couldn't have been any nicer! When you walk in, you feel as if you entered a time warp that led you to the the early 1900's. The furniture to the wall paper to the fixtures are beautiful. The wooden staircase that leads you upstairs creaks perfectly to lend to the ambience of the place. Our room " The Red Room # 12 " was cozy, comfy and inviting. My girlfriend and I will definitely be staying there again in the future.

The Monte Cristo is in a centeral location and is a tremendous value. The staff was welcoming. The bed was comfortable and the room was larger thn expected. I would stay again!

I appreciated the relaxed atmosphere and since I was staying for a few weeks while working, they allowed me to use the kitchen.

I was looking for a place in San Fran and there was a conference that almost all of the hotels taken up. I had never stayed at a bed and breakfast before and was very reluctant. But this was in my price range and I took a chance. This place was beautiful and elegant. The beds were VERY comfortable. The shower was fabulous. (my two first requirements). there was free wifi and means to print my boarding pass for free. (Bonus). THe breakfast was ok, but i was rushed so i'm not sure i gave it a fair shake. The building is old and i could hear the person above me walking around...that was annoying, but not a deal breaker. I appreciated the flat screen tvs and there was heat in the rooms. All around, they not only met my hopes and expectations, they exceeded them. I'd definitely stay here again.

The Monte Cristo's building was erected around 1875 and was once a brothel. It's low-budget Victorian, with small rooms and narrow hallways. My room was the cheapest and also the smallest and darkest. It faced the street on the ground floor and was shuttered for privacy. But a bargain for San Francisco. The breakfast was good, with good orange juice and plenty of fresh fruit. I don't eat bacon so the quiche didn't tempt. The owners and staff are pleasant and professional.

Recently my parents came to visit me in San Francisco. Finding them a place to stay was a challenge. I live in a part of the city not convenient to Union Square, or the Financial District, where most of the city's hotels are. Plus, those parts of the city aren't my favorites and wouldn't be too interesting to my parents because they're geared FOR tourists and don't reflect so much the "real" San Francisco. So, if you discount Union Square and the Financial District your choices are far fewer. My parents weren't exactly on a budget, but since they were staying a week didn't want to spend $400/night on a grande olde hotel of San Francisco in Nob Hill. And they have very high standards, so some shabby place wouldn't do. We also thought it would be nice if they were not far from my neighborhood. So I researched and visited pretty much every BnB in the city that met our criteria. Monte Cristo was the tops. When my parents arrived they were warmly greeted and (being 82 years old) their bags were carried upstairs, which was much appreciated. They adored Jack and Carl, and appreciated the friendly professionalism of all the staff. My parents are from New England, and physically reserved, but I could tell, at the end of their stay, my mother ALMOST hugged Jack, tho she returned to her senses and extended her hand instead for a warm farewell handshake. Both parents raved about breakfast each day, especially the fresh fruit, and mentioned things like the poached eggs were done to perfection. They enjoyed their room, a California King with a brand new bath I'd particularly requested because I knew they'd love it, and slept well at night. Each morning my father would rise and take a walk in the neighborhood, which he enjoyed, and both of them appreciated they were able to get a feel of what it's actually like to live in San Francisco, rather than perch on top of it, like a tourist. They will most definitely return to the Monte Cristo.

We were pleasantly surprised with this charming bed and breakfast and had a wonderful stay. The Laurel heights neighborhood is close to great shops and the buses are close by for transportation. Jack was a wonderful help with everything we needed and the ladies who made and served breakfast were outstanding. Our queen room was roomy enough and the bathroom a good size, but there could be more shelf space for toiletries in the bathroom. We really loved the homey atmosphere downstairs, which gave us a place to relax in the afternoon and early evenings. We will be back!

Atmospheric, tranquil and charming retreat, but conveniently located on the busline. Staff are very pleasant and helpful, and the breakfasts, including truly fresh fruit, eggs cooked to order, and a range of other treats, get your busy day off to a great start. An excellent value, we thought--we'd go back!

I was in San Francisco for business and I thought I would give a B&B a try to mix things up a bit. I enjoyed my stay. The room was nice and bed was very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was great. I plan on staying at the Monte Cristo the next time I am in San Francisco for business.

Enjoyed having bathroom in room. Room was quiet and comfortable. The breakfast were superb. Lots of resh fruit and eggs and bacon cooked to order. Will plan on returning.

I have never stayed in this part of town. I just loved it! The staff were just terrific! I can't wait to go back. Thanks, Jack!

Easy location to navigate. Within walking distance to food and libation. Charming older Victorian. Our room was comfortable- big, beautiful,cozy bed. The oversized shower head was delightful, however, there is no place in bathroom to put your stuff. No shelves , no hooks. The food was good. The price, decent. Would go back.

Right next to the bus line which was very nice. Clean and comfortable.

My husband and I stayed in the same room last year. We decided to book again because it was so pleasant last time. The place has loads of character, and improvements had been made to the room since our last visit. Breakfast good including a fabulous range of prepared FRESH fruit - melon, pineapple, strawberries, etc. Excellent fried eggs and bacon too. Good staff, great location for us (bus stops nearby). We will be back.

Jack was a great source of information and so nice. We loved our stay! It is located perfectly for the Muni and dining.

This is a beautiful bed and breakfast, built in 1875. It has so much history and charm. The proprietors are helpful and friendly and breakfast was fabulous. There is a water cooler for the guests and coffe and tea and cookies in the afternoons. There is even a computer with a printer you can use to print boarding passes! The place is close to a cable car stop but we had a rental car. It can take a few minutes to find parking for the evening. They also provide a map and a list of good restaurants nearby. I would recommend this place to anyone!

I was traveling alone, and wanted to capture the flavor of San Francisco and its history. The Monte Cristo is charming and beautifully furnished, with an old world touch but modern conveniences. Jack, the owner, was incredibly helpful in figuring out how to use the transit system which was important to me. The dining room hostess had a lovely personality and was fun to talk to. The food at breakfast was generous and delicious, and featured unusual food items that were fresh and wonderful. I would definitely come back to stay and recommend both the Monte Cristo and the surrounding Presidio neighborhood very highly!

Very comfortable stay. Bathroom was more than I expected. A little concerned about security with no screens/bars on ground floor windows. All in all a great stay.

Everything was wonderful from the first moment to the last.

The only problem that we had was the shower was dirty plus there was mold but would stay again just ask to make sure the shower was clean

We liked Monte Cristo. Our plane arrived late and we were greeted personally when we arrived. The room could use a little refurbishing but was comfortable and clean. We enjoyed the breakfast and found the location to be great.

Hello, My parents stayed in town in order to meet their six month old grandson. The hotel was clean and the breakfast in the morning was wonderful. They had a variety of food and my parents were very satisfied.

I just felt like it wasn't worth the $200 that I paid. I could have gotten somewhere way better for that price. The breakfast was nice though.

Parking near this b&b is difficult. It is well located for public transportation. A long walk to Union Square.

We loved it (even saw a hummingbird outside our window). Met many friendly guests. But the management is what struck me as truly extraordinary. We had to leave early due to a hurricane-related flight cancellation. The gentleman - without a second thought - gave us a full refund even though we were unable to provide his more that a few hours advance notice. We would most definitely stay there in the future.

Nice room and above all fantastic breakfast with awesome home-made pastries. One of the few hotels in the Presidio neighborhood, with family-style atmosphere and really good value for money

This fantastic bed & breakfast was a convenient block away from my weekend training and was exactly what I was hoping for. A quiet, cozy room in a lovely, historic house with both classic and modern features and amenities. The breakfasts were especially delicious! Great place - I hope to stay there again someday.

Nice neighborhood, walkable to restaurants, public transportation right out front. Very homey and quaint would definitely stay again!

The free breakfast was AMAZING. Eggs, bagels, fresh fruit, dried fruit, coffee, OJ, cranberry juice, the works! The service was awesome - they literally took your order for breakfast at your table.

Having never stayed in the Monte Cristo before we were extremely happy with our choice and would definitely stay there again. Jack and Carl made us feel like family as well as all the other employees. Food was wonderful. It was a great beginning to road trip.

It wasn't until the second day of our stay that we learned we could ask for things like eggs and bread for breakfast, other than what was displayed on the table. The second day someone of the staff asked us what we wanted.

The location was great as we planned activities at the Presidio. The inkeepers were very friendly and helpful. However, Room 3 was very stuffy, hot,no fan. We did not sleep well. Towels had a strong chlorine scent. Our first breakfast was excellent. The second day our poor server was harried, everyone must have come down to eat at once and she could not keep up. The price was reasonable for SF. Just make sure you get a different room!

Quite sincerely, this B&B is the best lodgings I've ever had. The quality of the design, the soft soothing atmosphere, the comfortable, private rooms with every amenity - I hope Jack and Carl keep this standard for always. They are very accomodating, and take every pain to ensure comfort. The room we had came with a plasma tv on the wall, plenty of furniture for comfort, and a design that really made us feel at home. Breakfast in the morning was a delightful assortment of fresh fruit, dried fruit, pastries and scones, granola cereal, and fresh juices. It was nice to have a healthy breakfast for a change. The location is great too; it's near everything you could want to see in the downtown area, the presidio, or the parks. Again, cannot recommend this B&B enough!

Both the owner and the lady in the breakfast area were very nice and helpful with all our needs. Nice and quiet atmosphere. Felt safe with the locked front door. Room was nice and clean. Sofa bed was not made up for us to be able to sit and enjoy our cookies and coffee together in the afternoon and then turned down at night. Sofa bed not comfortable.

A very clean, charming Victorian B&B with an interesting history, filled with lovely antiques, comfortable beds, and well updated bathrooms- and that's important! The breakfast room hostess went out of her way to serve us an be helpful. On-street parking was never a problem.

Enjoyed our stay at Monte Cristo. Jack made sure to go above and beyond for any travel advice that we had. He was helpful in his suggestions to restaurants and sights to see! For breakfast, we were waited on hand and foot. The two quiche that were prepared were fantastic! The B&B has an older look and feel, but with that, it had tons of character and enhancements that didn't take away from the stay. Best tv channel selection that we've seen to date! Would gladly stay again.

I can highly recommend staying at the Monte Cristo. The rooms are all charming and the building has a colorful past. Very clean and very quiet. The breakfast is top-notch, including a choice of hot dishes (quiches, eggs, etc.) as well as buffet of fresh fruits and pastries. Concierge availability is limited in the evening, and I would have appreciated warning about street cleaning (my rental car was ticketed). Number of rooms with bathtubs is small. A bit pricey, but so is all of San Francisco.

We came to Sf to visit my son & family. My daughter-in-law was told the cost would be a certain amount for a "neighborhood rate" The internet said a different amount. After a AAA discount our one night stay was yet another amount. We had hoped to have a reasonable priced place to stay on a regular basis. We enjoyed eberything about your place, but can't use it as often as we had hoped. We will return. V&R from Sacramento

We were delighted to learn that the Monte Cristo was once a brothel in San Francisco. The murals on the exterior are delightful. The room we stayed in was all we could hope for - wonderful antique furnishings. The fluffy bath rugs remind me that I need to get some new rugs for home!!

We have stayed at the Monte Cristo numerous times, both with the previous owner and now 3 times with the current owner. We will return again because the location is ideal for us and the rooms very comfortable and the breakfast is excellent. Don

The room was very comfortable, the breakfast better than I expected with a hot entree and the choice of toast, or English muffin. It was also located near a bus line and near an interesting shopping street. I thought it had more character than a hotel. We were also near the start of the Bay to Breakers so I could walk there. We would definitely stay there again.

My extended family stayed here for my daughter's graduation from USF. The B&B could not have been more perfect. The rooms are quaint, and the breakfast was very good. It is a perfect place for a large group -- it was a though we were staying at our own 18th century house.

This is a nice bed and breakfast if you are staying in the area. Convenient to everything in Laurel Heights (including restaurants, shopping and the UCSF Laurel Heights campus). Easy to get to the rest of San Francisco as well, especially south and west ends. Well kept, clean, lovely Victorian feel. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast is home made and delicious. I had a great stay at Monte Cristo and in the area.

Very nice, very quiet; super-friendly staff, close to many restaurants and bars. Lots of character, would definitely stay there again. Finding on-street parking close by was a real plus! Breakfast was wonderful: lots of fresh fruit, quiche, and more. All you could ask for before a day visiting the City :)

What turned me on to this B&B was not only its proximity to the deYoung Museum but it's antiquary turn-of-the-century appeal. Although my girlfriend was afraid of it being haunted, the most I found underneath the bed were a few dust balls covering the hardwood floor. There were a few other cosmetic attributes that caught my attention but what do you expect from someone who works in the contracting industry and has a knack for antique architecture? Other than that, the service and food were great, the bed was incredibly comfortable and so was the price. Thank you Monte Carlo for a memorable stay.

My husband and I spent two nites at the Monte Cristo and were very pleased. The room was charming and comfortable, the location convenient, and the staff exceptionally helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay again when back in San Francisco.

Our stay at the Monte Cristo was very enjoyable. It is located on two bus routes so it is easy and cheap to get to the ferry building area or Haight-Ashbury Area. The breakfast quiche in the morning was wonderful along with fresh fruit. The rooms are a little small but have everything that you will need. The staff was nice and helpful in finding things around town

We stayed at the Monte Cristo for 5 nights. The location was great. Right on a bus line in a pretty quiet part of the city. Not too far from the some of the main areas. The B&B was nice. The breakfast was good. Fresh fruit, bagels, eggs etc. We liked that they had tea, coffee and snacks available all day and in the evening. We liked our room which had it's own bathroom. Large enough that we never felt cramped. All in all a very nice place to stay, in a good location, at a pretty good price.

A little off the beaten track, but an attractive B&B with gracious owners, an historic building, and lots of ambiance. The rooms were small, very little closet space, and many baths are shared, but the beds were comfortable and entire experience was quite satisfactory. We have stayed there several twice and would do so again, because for us, the area is good and the accommodations satisfactory for a short stay.

This is a quiet, clean, bed and breakfast. I was in the City for a few days and did not want to fight the downtown traffic, so I chose to stay at the Monte Cristo. I was able to park on the street without much problem, the breakfast was always wonderful and the staff was exceptional. I will stay here again in a heartbeat. Room was a little small, but still a Great place!

My husband & I stayed for one night prior to going to the San Francisco Airport...GREAT location w/lots of FREE street parking...cute & historical spot...nice owner & staff members...GREAT breakfast...nice goodies left out for guests "until they are gone" included different home-baked cookies and rich dark chocolate truffles! The rooms are unique and the place is a definate "find"...rooms include FREE internet and hotel provides a LARGE bottle of water complimentary...what's not to like...?

Top rate all the way. If you are looking for a more quiet, relaxed, personal experience other than the business hotel chains down around the square, then this is the place. No parking fee either!. If you aren't use to the city then if you arrive a night its dark in the area and Presido is not a main street so you have to look hard to find it. It's a safe upscale area and Calfornia street has a number of places to dine only blocks away. The owners did a first class upgrade to the rooms and bathrooms, so they are very clean. My mattress was also top grade, the kind that melts around you when press your tired body down upon it. The breakfast can be made to order and the hostess/cook was very nice and I even stood and spoke to her in the kitchen as she cooked; it looks like a fun kitchen to cook in... maybe next time they might let me :)

Clean, good breakfast, good location; but I could hear the fellow across the hall clearing his throat all night long. Walls must be paper thin, and the doors not tight.

Feel at home the minute you walk in and speak to Jack, one of the owners. He smiles and makes you feel like you've been there before. We spent 4 nights there and enjoyed the authentic feel to the beautifully decorated rooms and charming dining/sitting rooms. Everyone who works there seems handpicked for their friendliness and attention to detail. The stairs creak as you ascend them, seemingly happy to welcome you back. The rooms are cosy and airy and beautifully decorated, without losing turn-of-the-century appeal. The breakfasts are delicious, with far more selection than anticipated. The B&B is across the street from 2 bus routes and is central to tourist areas of San Francisco. I would definitely not only stay there again, but recommend the Monte Cristo to any and all.

The staff at a nearby boutique hotel were kind enough to direct me to the Monte Cristo when they had no rooms available. Thanks! This was a pleasant surprise. Staff at MC were attentive and courteous. Breakfast was made available much earlier than the stated 7:30 am and was fresh and tasty. Room was quaint and had a nice view of a neighboring garden and downtown. I would readily stay here again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Monte Cristo was very comfortable, quiet and quaint. The neighborhood seemed safe and nice to walk around. The bus was within walking distance and parking was not impossible. The breakfast was yummy with lots of choices. The staff was friendly and helpful. The bed was extremely comfortable and huge. We were looking for someplace close to our daughter's home and feel lucky to have found this little gem.

We had two lovely nights at the Monte Cristo. Small, clean room with bathroom included. Coffee, tea, fruit and sweetbreads available throughout the day. Breakfast was delicious and presented with graciousness. thank you for making our visit to San Francisco especially nice!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Monte Cristo. It was conveniently located, provided outstanding service, including breakfast delivered to the room each morning. The rooms were clean and warmly decorated. The staff was kind, courteous, and very helpful. I will definitely stay there again.

Very convenient location, with attractive, well-appointed rooms. But what really distinguishes Monte Cristo is the friendly, thoughtful service: afternoon tea or coffee upon arrival, computer station to print out airline departure boarding passes, delicious and extensive breakfast, including fresh fruit and freshly-baked cranberry bread. Breakfast hostess Brianna couldn't have been more pleasant. We will definitely return.

Fine place. My only 2 critiques are 1.) heat controls are out in the hallway, not room specific. It appeared that someone preferred it to be set in the low 60 degree range. 2.) Towels and pillowcases had been laundered with detergents with fragrance, or else dryer static thingees, leaving the scent that causes headaches for chem-sensitive folks. Mgt., please switch to fragrance-free detergents. Thanks.

Really liked the room. It was very quiet. Usually when I stay at a hotel or bed and breakfast I don't get a good night's sleep but I did at your place.

We loved our stay at the Monte Cristo. The room was lovely, the breakfasts and afternoon refreshments excellent, but what is really exceptional is the helpfulness and hospitality they show to every guest. I had a great stay for what I paid. Comfortable and large rooms with an old world feel. Bathrooms are updated with a very modern sink and and walk-in shower. Public transportation literally at your front door and minutes away from most of San Francisco's attractions.

the staff and accommodations were great! the food was exceptionally good - not elaborate, but fresh and expertly prepared. Delicious bleu cheese quiche and perfectly cooked scrambled eggs.

I spend about a week in San Fran every other month and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Monte Cristo twice. Each time I have been welcomed and treated as a family member. The rooms are very nice and exceptionally clean. The made to order breakfast is amazing and the attention to details is remarkable. I am a raving fan!

This is an elegant little place in a cute neighborhood. Unlike most B&B's, they have some food available even at night (bananas and sometimes chocolate). My only complaint is that sometimes the heat could have been on a bit higher.

We enjoyed our recent overnight stay at the Monte Cristo! Room #11 was comfortable, cozy and clean. The hotel staff was friendly and the next morning served us a nice, hot breakfast. As we dined we enjoyed the nostalgic jazz music which added to the ambiance of the Monte Cristo. We will definitely be back for another visit!

We stayed at the Monte Cristo from Dec 22 thru Dec 28. We enjoyed the breakfast and the friendly hospitality. The bed's were old and very noisy though.

We stayed one night at Monte Cristo, picking this B&B because of its proximity to a concert venue. We were greeted warmly and upgraded to a King room. The room was small, but adequate and clean. The bath quite spare, but also clean. Breakfast was excellent and exceeded our expectations.

Nice room, remodeled updated yet still authentic bed and breakfast. Lovely place to stay. Breakfast was outstanding.

This B&B is located far enough from downtown to be quiet and close enough that it's accessible by walk or short cab ride. The room (Broderick) was a great size for two. Breakfast in the mornings was great and the staff was exceedingly friendly.

All major hotels were booked in The City due to a huge convention so my American Express travel agent suggested the Monte Cristo. It's a quaint 18-room hotel with charming accommodations and great breakfasts! Easy walking distance to wonderful restaurants, art galleries, shopping. I felt safe and right at home--coming to breakfast in one's jammies is encouraged! Great stay, I'll do it again!

My cousin and I did a mini family reunion in the city. The Monte Cristo is in a great location. Easy walking to fun shops and great restaurants. Breakfast was yummy. We spent time in the sitting room. A very comfortable place and our host was gracious

I stayed at Monte Cristo in late November 2010 and I couldn't wish for a more welcoming and comfortable stay. Jack is a legend and knows San Francisco like he back of his hand, so any questions guests have are taken care of. Staff members Terri and Briony (I hope I spelt their names right) were just wonderful too. The breakfasts are magnificent, rooms perfect and the B&B is in a nice area. In all, a brilliant place to stay!!

The Innkeepers were very helpful and accommodating. The breakfast was excellent. The soundproofing was insufficient, and had the Inn been busy, it would have been a problem. Fortunately there were few guests, and everyone seemed sensitive to the problem. Otherwise, I would give the Monte Cristo an unqualified recommendation.

Staff was always extremely pleasant and helpful! The breakfast was incredible! An offering of eggs or a signature blue Cheese and Bacon Quiche besides all the fresh fruit and the normal pastries and cereals.

Many improvements have been made since our last stay at the Monte Cristo. We will return!

Enjoyed our stay here (good value, great breakfast), but DO NOT stay in room #7. Aside from the two single beds in the room (seriously?), the next-door bathroom was separated from our room by a paper-thin door (which previously connected to the bathroom), that allowed us to hear EVERYTHING that was going on in our neighbor's bathroom. NOTE TO OWNERS: replace the two single beds with one double, and soundproof that bathroom!!!! It led to a very unpleasant experience.

superb beds; super food (breakfast); lovely people. Phone recording and website seem too impersonal - could be warmer and more accessible in tone. What Jack has done there in a short time is amazing, and we'll bet our next time will be even better.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Monte Cristo, when we went to SF to see our college student daughter. The room was lovely, if small, the bed was very comfortable, the proprietors were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was very nice. The Monte Cristo has a wonderful old San Francisco atmosphere, and we loved it.

Really nice B&B, run by really nice people - when our taxi to get back to the airport for our departure failed to arrive they couldn't have been more helpful. Everything was just great - we really enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend this place to anyone.

Great B&B. Excellent service and breakfast. I have one complaint: the water pressure is incredibly lousy... water literally drips at a snail's pace from the shower head. So, if you get assigned room #5, you might request an alternate room. Besides this one complaint, everything else was fantastic. Oh, parking's a pain, but you're in SF, so what're you gonna do?

My wife and I spent four days in SF for our 30th anniversary and stayed at the Monte Cristo. The place is old, and the age shows, but it is clean and well maintained, and the furnishings were very comfortable. Breakfast each day was delicious (fresh fruits, variety of pastries, various quiches, cereals, trail mix -- something for most everybody). It's about three miles from downtown, but we were able to get everywhere easily on the city buses (two bucks, with very generous transfer policies -- the 1 California line is a block from the door, and you can take that directly to Chinatown and Embarcadero; one transfer to the Golden Gate or to Fisherman's Warf) and there are a lot of fun, funky neighborhood destinations within walking distance. (A note on the walking - they aren't kidding about the hills. OK, we're from Illinois, where there's maybe a 30 foot change in elevation for the entire freakin' state, but some of the inclines had me wishing for a bottle of O2.)

Extremely comfortable bed; it was like staying at a friend's house - there was always coffee and tea available and fruit and a plate of cake or cookies .. anytime I passed the dining area! and having computer access was unexpected and extremely helpful when a family emergency arose. The house is old, but the owners have made necessary improvements without changing the character of the place ... absolutely loved it (only wish it was closer in to the downtown area so I could visit more often).

We stayed on a Friday night and found a parking space right across the street. This was important because some hotel charge up to $25 a night for parking. The breakfast was wonderful and filling. The bed and bedding was excellent. However, we stayed in the cheapest room there and it was too small, no place to sit except on the bed. Otherwise, the Monte Cristo was a great place to stay. Myra

Staff and owners were friendly and attentive. The morning breakfasts were great with variety and quality, dining room was a charming environment to visit others and sit and enjoy your meal. Room didn't feel so clean, there was peeling plaster on the ceiling in a couple of places. The bathroom had a poor paint job with dripping paint onto the moulding looked grotty, and cheap linoleum floors didn't seem clean. Biggest problem was that our bathroom was only separated by only a thin door from the twin bed room next door. When sitting on the toilet you could hear every word of their conversations, and they would be able to hear every noise you made on the toilet. As well, doors/walls are not very sound proof, so the noise of people in the hallway was quite loud, especially if they got in late. You are close to the Fillmore district, so the area is pretty good, but I try a different place next time we are in SF.

We have 2 teenagers and wanted a night away from home to celebrate our 18th anniversary. Living in the south bay, we always look to the city for our nights away. Carl greeted us and removed the feather bedding cause of an allergy. We changed for dinner and had used the dining portion of the website to chose a restaurant. The Inn was clean, furnishings are beautiful and comfortable. The breakfast was lots of fruit, granola, breads, orange juice and Peets coffee. We enjoyed the night away and will be back. We asked to see if they had any soy milk and they did :)

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights over Labor Day weekend. We reserved the Maximillian suite. It was spacious and nicely appointed. The bathroom was a tad small, but understandable considering the age of this gorgeous building. Parking was a bit of a trick. I highly recommend staying here as it is cozy, warm and inviting. The two gentlemen running the B&B are very nice and welcoming as well. I would definitley stay here again and have convinced my parents to stay here as well.

This was an amazing trip. We stayed 3 nights at the Monte Cristo. This is a very reasonable place to stay and the value of service from the B&B surpassed all expectations. Bedrooms were a comfortable size & the bed was very comfy. The bathrooms were nicely remodeled as well. Parking was free across the street from the b&b. Parking is best past Pine Avenue where it converts to Masonic. Each side is day & night parking, the only thing you need to make sure is that you move your car for the street cleaner on either Wednesday or Thursday. It was also easily connected to public transportation. Two major lines pass right in front. No worries about noise, though, they have great sound barriers & great blackout blinds & curtains for restful nights. Terry was AMAZING! She had great stories & willing to accommodate us in anyway to make sure we were satisfied w/ our breakfast & our journey through the city. I HIGHLY recommend this B&B to anyone. My hubby & I will definitely be back VERY SOON! Leaving the heat from Vegas to lovely fresh Monte Cristo B&B is a definite repeat for us!

We visit our son and his girlfriend as often as possible and just found this wonderful B & B. They recently moved in to a new apt a block away, so mix convenience and the charm and comfort of this magnificent place, we can't wait to return! Jack and Carl are both very accommodating hosts, the food was excellent, the room including the bed was so comfy. We have definitely found our "home away from home" when visiting the San Francisco area!

Perfect location, quiet place, hand on work of owners, and Dedes very personal service.

The innkeeper was always helpful, and friendly. The room was clean, charmingly furnished with antiques, and an exceptionally comfortable bed. For a B&B located in the heart of San Francisco, the value was exceptional. The only drawback was the thin walls which permitted me to overhear my neighbor's conversations with unusual clarity. Still, I would recommend this inn highly, and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Dedes made our stay worth it! exceeded our expectations. Will come back again!

My first visit to S.F in years. 2 of us going, a friend visiting her daughter at USF for parent' weekend. Conveniently located to campus, lovely converted Victorian home with period furnishings, comfortable beds, friendly staff, healthy local fare for breakfast, and even freshly baked cookies!

The decoration and ambiance is wonderful! Historic building with modern amenities. The silk wallpaper in the breakfast room is gorgeous and the wallpaper in the rooms has a beautiful design too. Free computer to use and available wifi (I didn't have my laptop with me though). The beds were very comfortable (I have a back problem so this was really important). The staff was so nice, helpful, and kind, and breakfast was delicious! I will stay here again. Public transport was easy to use and close to the B&B. Trader Joe's is also nearby. My friend and I stayed in room 5 and it was so quiet and peaceful!

The Monte Cristo is a quirky place, with some unusual room characteristics. The innkeepers do a great job with the breakfast and service, so it's a very good value for someone who is spending time in San Francisco.

If you don't mind a non-standard hotel room/spartan accomodations, this place is great. Good location, a block from the thoroughfare so not noisy. No complaints really. The bed we got was not terribly comfortable, but it was passable, and the door lock needed some fiddling, but worked. Other than that, great value for being in the middle of the city.

The Monte Cristo is now under new management, and we have just installed new Simmons beds. And for the first time in the history of the hotel, we have Wifi :-) The hotel was built in 1875 and it still has many of the original mortise locksets.
