Lovely clientele and owners. Nicely appointed rooms. Quiet and comfortable.

Great hotel in the heart of San Francisco. A few minutes to Union Square, shopping, a bus stop and the BART station. You cannot beat the location. The hotel itself has an adorable charm, and a friendly staff. The rooms are a decent size, though the bathrooms are quite small compared to your average hotel. The only negatives: no individual control of AC/heat, and no coffee maker in the hotel rooms. A fan would've been nice, as we woke up sweating almost every morning. Note to staff: put a Keurig in each room, no one wants to take a shower, put on clothes, and go down 4 flights of stairs for coffee.

I went to San Francisco to visit three of its art museums. The Golden Gate Hotel and its staff supplied a comfortable, clean, quiet, and safe place to unwind at night. And as I am a cat lover, I was pleased one morning to hear a meowing outside my door, which I opened, and the cat inspected the room and me, after a minute leaving, apparently finding all to its liking. I stayed in a room with a shared bath for one night when passing through SF. The room was nice, clean, and very comfortable. Though I was apprehensive about having to share a bathroom, it was clean and never occupied when I needed to use it. The room had its own sink, soaps, and hairdryer and was very quiet. Breakfast was basic but very nice, with coffee, orange juice, and pastries. I missed the afternoon tea and cookies but I love the idea! All of the staff members were extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely return to the Golden Gate Hotel.

I stayed here for a convention at the Moscone, a 15-20 min walk away. Easy making pre-stay arrangements by email. Antique elevator is fantastic. Staff and resident pets are courteous. Clean simple rooms with excellent wi-fi signal. Slightly musty smell - not bothersome to me but might be for some; not unexpected for an early 20th century bldg. Quiet. Excellent croissants for breakfast. Spent far less than I would have at a chain hotel near the convention centet. Would stay here again.

I was pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a room with private sink and shower within the room. Using the shower down the hall would also have been acceptable. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Wifi worked well. The rooms are clean and charming with very very comfortable beds. I was also happy that my room faced to the back as I was worried about street noise. The continental breakfast included super croissants and muffins. The best thing, of course, is the incredibly convenient location. I was attending a conference at Moscone Center which was a short and pleasant walk. Nob Hill and North beach are an easy walk in the other direction. Excellent value in an expensive hotel area.

Enjoyed staying at the Golden Gate Hotel. Easy walk to public transportation. Friendly and helpful staff. Great prices. Rooms a little loud (noise from other guests). Warm weather outside made it warm over night (a fan would have been nice). Will stay here again.

Stayed for 6 nights. The service was very good, the location is pretty central - great value for money!

I stayed in 403 and it was perfect for me a solo traveller. It was spotless and furnished with perfect taste and high quality too. The two owners were just lovely and very helpful as was Greg another staff member. The drawbacks are the breakfast and the fact you cannot make tea in your room. However I suppose that's one way to encourage guests to mingle in the parlour. If I stayed again - and I would- I would book in advance as on this trip as I extended my nights I also had to move room and this was what actually made me change hotel in the end otherwise I would have been happy to spend a week here. Also it was a pity I didn't see more of the owners as they had personality and rigour unlike the other staff members - afterall pert of the reason you stay in a small hotel is to chat with the owners / staff.

This is a great place, perfectly located for business or tourism. I travel to the Bay Area often as a single woman, and at least once a year with my husband, to visit relatives. We always stay here at least one night when we're together, and I stay here my whole trip. The pets make me feel welcome, and I feel completely safe staying here, even when I am traveling alone. Breakfast is continental, but great quality.

This was a great find in the big city! It's low priced especially when traveling with a pet compared to other local hotels. Great, central location. The staff is very nice and keeps everything incredibly clean. Love this historic building. Breakfast was great and you could tell everything was made with love. Just wish there were a few more options. Will definitely stay here when back in the city.

The golden gate hotel feels like a second home. The owners and staff easily converse with guests while remaining very professional. We sleep soundly in the plush, comfortable beds. It is clear that design and presentation matter because the bedrooms, even when updated, capture a European flair. The rooms are not large but adequate. There is an armoire instead of a closet and two chairs by the window. The bathroom had a claw foot tub with a shower. Quaint and very clean. The breakfast croissants are fresh daily and absolutely delicious. My only wish would be to have some fruit as well at tea time there are homemade oatmeal cookies daily and black current tea to revive any traveler after exploring the city. The other guests we have met have been form Europe and the USA. They tend to be friendly as well and we enjoy meeting them and hearing about their plans. It is a unique experience for anyone who enjoys bed and breakfasts. If you want lots of space and a modern venue, then this is not for you. If you want a beautiful and amazingly comfortable bed and room, a quiet spot to relax, a chance to meet others while able to be alone, then this is an ideal choice.

Very nice B&B, well located. My room on the 4th (last floor) provided no view but was quiet and comfortable, very clean too. Nice touch with the tea and cookies served in the afternoon. Staff is friendly and helpful. Would recommend this B&B to friends visiting San Francisco.

Second time staying here for a conference at a bigger hotel. Very nice and quiet. Rooms are nice but small but then again the price is nice and I like old places. Pip the cat is a good guy who always seems to be ok with taking pats.

This is the best find for lodging I've ever come upon. Located less than a block from a cable car line, and only 4-5 blocks from Union Square & Chinatown, this 100-year-old building has been well taken cared of and is immaculately clean. The super-old elevator was my favorite offering, but clawfoot tubs are fun, too. Service was more than acceptable -- we were treated like long-lost family!! But the breakfast was continental -- simply muffins and croissants with beverages -- and I'd hoped for more. Still, the baked goods were outstanding. I'd definitely go back!

We really enjoyed staying here. The location was great, the rooms were comfortable, and the service was terrific. We were with another couple who felt similarly. We would definitely stay again.

I stayed for three nights and I was surprised by how friendly the staff are and how kind Pip is. It didn't feel like I was staying at a hotel or a bed & breakfast. It felt like I was staying at a home. Even though in my room I could hear the sounds from the street, the Golden Gate Hotel was a very comforting experience. I really liked its Victorian charm and the smell of freshly baked cookies was delightful. If I return to San Franciso, I would definitively book with them again!

A great value...I would highly recommend.

When you want be in the action, though also be able to relax, the Golden Gate Hotel in San Francisco does both really well. When traveling, it is imperative that I say in a place that is an extension of home. This is it. Thanks to Golden Gate Hotel, our stay was marvelous.

Our flight was delayed 9 hours due to weather on our way in to San Francisco. We called the Golden Gate to let them know, and they were wonderful about getting us set up in our room, even at 2 am. The location is great as well. Plus, they serve the most delicious croissants I've ever had for breakfast. Great place!

This place is really economical while being very charming in a quaint manner. It is perfectly located, at a reasonable distance from union square, fisherman's wharf, civic center and other attractions. The staff is very courteous and work hard to make you feel comfortable.

It is a very cozy and cute place. We have felt very welcomed. The staff has been friendly and personal. It's a nice and reliable place to stay with excellent location. The WiFi has worked great. One wish we had is to start breakfast (coffee and pastries) earlier than 8pm, which is quite late for those with the East Coast jet lag.

This place has a lot of charm. The hotel is conveniently located, and close to Chinatown. There are good restaurants nearby, although dinners are not served at the hotel. Service, in terms of booking details, and advice about transportation, was outstanding. The pastries and coffee at breakfast are excellent, but I would prefer if something more substantial were served, even if pre-prepared. Of course, the cookies with afternoon tea are always appreciated.

My wife and I recently spend two nights at the Golden Gate Hotel. I would rate it outstanding for value for the money and for service. I particularly want to single out Halim, who went out of his way for us.

Stayed 3 nights. Very Homey place. Exceptional location. Half block from Cable cars, 2 blocks from Square, 2 blocks from Chinatown gate. Breakfast good muffins and croissant and great people - many which have stayed there many times and keep coming back. I would strongly recommend.

This little hotel is well maintained and has a great location. The staff is great. We will stay here again. Comment/suggestion: I would gladly pay a little bit more for the breakfast to include fruit and cereal.

Our second time staying at the Golden Gate Hotel. We love it. The proprietors and all the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the other guests are always interesting to chat with in the lovely little parlor where breakfast is served each morning and tea each afternoon. And of course Pip is a pleasure.

I love Golden Gate Hotel! This is my second year staying there, and it's the first place I check when looking to visit San Francisco. From the moment I step inside and am greeted by Pip, the cat, I feel welcome. The service is terrific (the staff even remembered that I had stayed there last year), and I love the ambiance. There's an old fashioned hand-operated elevator to take you up to your floor, or even better, you can take the winding staircase: there are books and old photos on each floor; so much fun to explore. The rooms are comfortable and quaint (no big screen televisions, but look, you're in SAN FRANCISCO, go out and walk around!!). My only suggestion is to change the type of cleaning product (the smell of pine sol was a little overwhelming, although I appreciated that the rooms would be clean--perhaps switch to orange sol). I haven't eaten the breakfast that's included in the room rate because I like to get up and walk to the multitude of wonderful cafés in the city, but the table setting looks inviting and there are wonderful baked smells wafting throughout the inn. There's free wifi (a must for wherever I go), and a computer/printer downstairs if you need to get online. John and Renate, thank you for helping to make my stays in SF magical! Lore

Very central location, ideal for tourists

The staff at Golden Gate Hotel was always friendly and helpful with information & maps, yet weren't under our feet constantly. The rooms are cozy, clean and serviced daily. I didn't care for breakfast (all bread type foods) but I was aware before booking so I can't complain. There are many small breakfast cafe's super close if you need your meat and eggs. The hotel location was a plus as it is close to public transport, Chinatown, food markets, restaurants and pubs, all within walking distance. (Uncle Vito's, caddy corner across the street, yum!) We walked from the hotel thru Chinatown all the way to Fishermans Wharf and back in just four hours yet it can be done in far less time. (We stopped for photography, window shopping, a tour of the submarine, eats & a beer.)

This is the cutest place I have been to yet. Everything is meticulously placed and planned for. Even Pip the cat (and the official host) does his job right on time, greeting me at the door, showing me my room, and accompanying me for afternoon tea. The atmosphere is extremely cozy and relaxed. A gem!

Was a great place to stay for a first vacation in San Francisco. The Hotel has some amazing old classic charms, including a bird cage elevator and clawfoot tubs. The staff was excellent, helped us out without question on several occasions. Breakfast was great. Will definitely be our place to stay again the next time we visit San Francisco.

This was a convenient spot to stay while attending meetings around Union Square, walking up and down hill in heels was tough, but worth it to be a bit away from the intense business conference crowd. Would be great for mini holiday break in walking shoes. My favorite thing was having two charming companions at the breakfast table: one was ginger, furry, with a handsome round face, he graciously stayed long enough to be photographed.

This hotel is perfect for those that want to stay close to Union Square and public transport options. Friendly service; clean, comfortable rooms, and great value!

A little annoying to share a bathroom. Other then that fabulous! Loved it!

I had visited this gem of an inn more than 10 years ago, and it was even better than I remembered. The man who welcomed us had helpful local knowledge, including the best restaurants around and ways to get there that avoided the steepest hills in the neighborhood. The place is as cozy as pictured, including the house cat to greet you by the fireplace and fresh flowers, with clean, attractive bathrooms with nice faucets & such. The bedclothes are white, fluffy, and clean and the bed comfortable. The innkeepers serve the best French croissants in San Fran for breakfast with Euro-style strong coffee. Awesome location, just up the hill from Union Square, Chinatown, and not far from Russian Hill. AND one block from the cable car, where you can get an all-day pass. We'll go back... hopefully sooner rather than later.

My husband and I visited SF this month and only had one night in the city. We are thrilled with what the Golden Gate Hotel had to offer. It is the perfect place to stay for two and very affordable! We loved the vintage-like SF rooms, the delicious breakfast in the morning and the comforting ambiance. We can't wait to go back and spend more time there! Great value and location; friendly staff

I have been waffling and vassilating and procrastinating about writing this review for too long. You know how sometimes you happen upon a little gem so rare and exquisite that you find yourself protecting it with a fiendishly unholy covetousness, because you don't want word to leak and thus bespoil your heavenly discovery by the inevitable arrival of the swarm of the masses? Well...that is GGH. And so I hesitate to write this review only beause I fear the swarm. -M. Rutledge McCall

My only suggestion to the hotel is that they serve breakfast half an hour earlier, at least during the AGU, since the meeting starts at 8am. Fresh fruit at breakfast would also be nice. Otherswise, the hotel is perfect: great location, wonderful staff, very pleasant atmosphere.

We loved our stay at the Golden Gate Hotel. The breakfast was delicious. I apprecaited the tea and cookies each afternoon after a long day of sightseeing. The cat Pip was friendly and a highlight of our day. The location was fantastic for a first-time visit to San Francisco.

An excellent small hotel with hospitable hosts, staff, and cat.

This was my first time staying here and I plan to return! The location is perfect; easy to get around. My room was immaculate and I was lucky enough to have a claw-foot tub to soak in, after spending hours walking around my favorite city. I loved having the pets around; especially Pip the cat-who "announced" guests by meowing when they arrived at the door! Can't wait to return...

I've stayed at the Golden Gate a few times in the past few years and have been enjoyed it every time. The room with a bathroom and big window was especially nice, but the shared bathroom was great for the price. There were always guests from around the world at breakfast, which made it far more interesting than a standard hotel experience.

finished out a hectic conference trip with a couple nights at this lovely little B&B. it was a welcome change from the corporate chain i had been staying in. we had a room with private bath. pretty small room, but we managed. the space was made to feel tighter by the stifling heat from the radiator when we arrived, easily remedied by opening the windows. picked up some noise from the neighbors, but i was told this was the trade-off for the stronger wi-fi signal (FREE!) in the first-floor room. location is excellent. we walked through chinatown to fisherman's wharf, the ferry house, and the north beach neighborhood (my favorite!). if you like walking tours, we also trekked to crissy field and the presidio. the biggest let down was breakfast. croissants with jam were lovely, but a little light, even for a continental. no fruit. very mediocre coffee. not much fuel for all that walking. we ended up searching for lunch a little earlier than usual.

Several years ago, I made my first pilgrimage to San Francisco, and stayed at several hotels to try and make the most of my vacation, but after seeing The Golden Gate Hotel, we ended up canceling our other reservations. Now, I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the whole city. Not only is the place adorable and clean, with an old working elevator complete with a sliding cage door and paintings to look at in the elevator shaft, but you get the impression that every member of the staff is there out of a labor of love. You really feel the care they put into it, weather it's getting you to the airport in time or just making a single traveler feel welcomed with conversation and a refill of perfectly brewed tea. The rooms are comfortable and feel like home, perfectly furnished to be comfortable and cozy. In the morning and at 4:00 there is tea and coffee in the sunny parlor (and if there isn't, someone is always happy to make you a cup), and a ginger bob tail cat named Pip to keep you company. The location is conveneint to all sorts of attractions by foot or cable car (and a few convenience stores), and no matter when you wander in throughout the day or night, there is a feeling that the whole place is happy to have you back and wants you to have a good time. If you stay here, you'll want to come back. I know I'm missing it already.

The inn hosts and staff could not have been nicer and helpful. The location is great for restaurants, and avoids the crowds and chaos of Union Square - just a block and a half away. We found it within walking distance to the convention center - about 15 minutes. The room (406) was charming - we shared a twin - the beds are ok - not quite as comfy as other reviews suggested - but then perhaps they had newer mattresses. THe only downside of our stay was noise - from within the inn - adjacent rooms and hallway noise were noticeable - door closings. Street noise was not an issue.

4 nights first week of November 2012. Great central location. Excellent reception. Very good dinner recommendations.Supper friendly guests, alot who are repeat offenders. I loved the 7 foot old fashioned claw foot tub, super for a big bath at days end. Loved the old elevator, full of character. Very European. The home made cookies at 4 were a treat. Best of all was Pip the cat! Super friendly feline adds nice touch, lowers blood pressure. Only recommendation: a more substantial breakfast. The croissants and homemade muffins were good., you could add greek yogurt, some boiled eggs, fresh fruit ,and some breakfast cheese without too much effort. I will stay there again. J&J

I stayed here for three nights at the end of October, as well as a few times several years ago. The accomodations are quanit but comfortable, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Comfortable rooms at a reasonable price, a great location for tourists and business people and warm and friendly service has made this a place that I have stayed at three times on visits to San Francisco. It is always neat to meet people from all over the world in the lobby for breakfast or afternoon tea.

We needed an affordable yet safe place to stay and discovered the Golden Gate Hotel. We were in town for one night for a Jimmy Buffett concert and we were more than happy with our choice. I didn't want to leave. Our room was small but had everything we needed. The cookies and tea were wonderful in the afternoon and then we really enjoyed their continental breakfast int he morning. Excellent coffee and rolls. Have already recommended to some friends. Thank you Golden Gate Hotel for making our stay so wonderful.

Just above the hustle of Union Square is Lower Nob Hill, the location of the Golden Gate Hotel. It is a clean, nice place to stay. I was willing to share a bathroom and shower which knocked down the price to reasonable. The room was small, about 8 x 8 feet but it had a small TV, closet and a double bed. Breakfast was from 8 AM and consisted of croissants, coffee, tea, and orange juice. People were nice to talk with. The place was faintly musty with old pictures of San Francisco and the family on the walls. There is an antique elevator that extends four floors serving their 25 rooms. The house cat has free reign of the place, but if you are allergic to cats, you may consider another place. Their wifi is free but painfully slow and spotty.

The staff are particularly helpful and pleasant. The hotel is quiet and the beds are very comfortable. The rooms are a bit cramped at times, but this was expected after a previous stay. The location is fantastic, just half a block from the cable car and close to Union Square. The breakfast is wonderful, but I miss the pain au chocolat!

The building is old and subject to the ills typical of age, but the managers and owners are quick to make needed repairs. Service is warm and friendly.

The breakfast is delicious and the dining room lovely. The staff is very, very nice!

The is a resident cat and a resident dog, both of them very amiable creatures, but if you are allergic.... The place is very clean and the people very pleasant. The vibe is fine.

We stayed at the GGH from October 17-21, 2012. We had a very enjoyable stay. We had relied on reviews from Trip Advisor and this site and we were not disappointed. The hotel is immaculate and the room was nicely appointed with a very comfortable bed. Centrally located only two blocks from Union Square and two blocks from the Chinatown Gate. Lots of restaurants within walking distance. The only small complaint is that we had to "find" the desk clerk in the evening--he was not sitting out in the lobby, but right off of the lobby in the office. It wasn't really a big deal, but we did feel a little less apt to ask questions or for help when he was not sitting out at the front desk. Other than that, the hotel was exactly what we expected and would recommend this in a heartbeat.

We stayed here for six nights in July 2012. And loved it. It's an old building, so it comes with all the pros and cons of an old building. We stayed at the top floor at the back of the hotel in a room with a (small) bathroom. The room was not big but big enough for us. Personally I got to appreciate our room more and more. It was rather quiet (we could sleep with the windows open) and the old style of the room was nice. The elevator was a treat but most of the time we took the stairs. It was clean and the bed was excellent which is not always the case in a hotel. I had a conference at the Hilton and was so pleased not stay there. I really don't understand why people appreciate sleep factories of 1500 rooms or so. You can't have dinner at the Golden Gate but there are more then enough restaurants nearby. Breakfast is included but I skipped it a couple of times because breakfast only consisted of croissants and some muffins. And although they are very good as were the coffee and orange juice, each day croissants and muffins is a bit too much. Breakfast starts late (around eight) and there is not much space (around 10 can eat at the same time). Finally you have to accept cat Pip and dog Cookie. Personally I don't really appreciate dogs/cats when I eat. I didn't really mind either but I ignored Cookie who walked through the breakfast room. The owners and all who worked there were very nice and helpful. We would certainly come back. Especially if you like to avoid big chain hotels this is a very nice place in SF. One final remark. For us the location was okay. We never felt unsafe in the area nearby. Yes there is quite a number of homeless people around but they are people trying to get (a) change.

Stayed for 5 nights in October 2012 at a lovely and very quiet room in the back of the hotel. Staying here was a bit like staying with a family member, much more personal than a motel. Owners and all staff are wonderful and helpful people. Room was nice with very comfortable bed and private bath with big tub. Good waterpressure in shower every morning. Tea and most delicious cookies served in the afternoon, which is nice after having been out all day. It was a big plus that I could check my mail daily from the computer room. The location of this hotel could not be better. Shopping of all kinds, cafe's, public transportation is all within a minute or a few minutes walk away. I will be staying here for sure on my next trip to San Francisco.

Wonderful little gem. From the first moment we arrived, weary from travel, we were greeted like old friends. Welcomed with a restorative cup of tea in the lovely sitting room. The staff are without fail some of the nicest people we met during our holiday. We highly recommend this hotel.

We could not have been more happy with the GG Hotel for our weekend stay in SF. We loved afternoon tea each day, the rooms were well designed given their size (they were small, but they also had everything we could possibly need and plenty of room for our stuff -- they even had closets!). The rooms and bathroom were impeccably clean!

We reserved three rooms for a family weekend in SF, and they put us all into one 'wing' of the building. The customer service was amazing. The breakfast area is small and would not accommodate all of us, but they put our food and coffee on trays and brought it up to one of our rooms so we could eat together. This is a very SF-type building with creaks, but it was very well maintained and immaculately cleaned. You can not beat the location with immediate access to buses, the cable cars, BART, etc, although I slept blissfully, even with my window open. And you can not find a better deal in the Union Square area.

We stayed four nights at this hotel and would definitely stay here again. We found the staff welcoming and helpful hosts. The location was very convenient to all that we wanted to see and do while staying in the city. The room while small was perfectly suited to our needs. We had no problems sharing the bathroom and loved having Pip the cat visit us.

This small hotel punches above its weight by delivering exceptional customer service. It's a home from home in the big city. Every member of staff that we met were delightful and couldn't do enough to ensure our stay was a success. I would certainly choose to stay there again on my next visit to San Francisco.

What a charming place, the history, the architecture, the style, the homeliness is nothing short of heart warming. Halim and Spencer were a great help and the family who runs the hotel are incredible. And don't even get me started about Pip, Cookie and Patsy such a warm heart place..I miss it so much.

Our stay in Sept. 2012 was wonderful. Loved the afternoon tea and continental breakfast. The hotel is clean, friendly, and very welcoming. Felt like we were in 1912 San Francisco, especially with the narrow, creaky old fashioned elevator- loved it! Location was perfect; right on the cable car route. Will definately stay there on our next trip. Highly recommended for those who are tired of impersonal "box hotels".

We enjoyed our stay at the Golden Gate, it's in a great position and the rooms were good. Breakfast arrangements were disappointing - there's nowhere near enough room for all the guests and it's awkward hanging around waiting for a table to become free. The actual breakfast itself was fine, but it could all be better organised.

The Golden Gate Hotel is in an excellent position for exploring San Francisco. The staff were friendly and helpful. However the breakfast arrangements are chaotic and unsatisfactory with guests having to stand and wait for a table to be free.

Our five day stay at the GG was a delight. The location is very convenient, the staff is friendly, courteous, and very helpful about getting around and tourist advice. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was tasty. We will definitely return to the GG if we are in SF again.

Only had two days in San Francisco and the central location of this hotel was ideal for sightseeing. We were made very welcome by the staff and the hotel has a nice homely feel about it complete with a ginger cat at reception. Interesting old features include the lift and wall hangings and our room had a good view,

The hotel was a wonderful step back in time as you took an antique elevator up to your floor, enjoyed taking a shower in a claw tub, and slept in an exceedingly comfortable bed. The staff was very attentive, including a resident cat and dog who welcomed you and maintained their presence throughout the hotel.

The outside does not do justice to the inside. Once you step inside the doors of this Hotel, you are instantly greeted by the warmth and coziness of this place. The staff is very accomodating. The surroundings are impeccable, down to the seemless operation of the centuries old elevator. The rooms are beautifully appointed and provide every needed comfort. I cannot recommend this place enough for any who choose to visit San Francisco and wish to stay somewhere that is more "typical" than a large, chain hotel. The experience is worth having!

This B&B offers a great central location. The accommodations were excellent. The only item I was disappointed in was the breakfast which I would call nonexistent. They only served muffins or croissants in a small sitting room. It is so small that we were asked to move so that an incoming couple could sit down.

Renate and John and their staff are fantastic hosts, and their 25-guest-room in is the best place to stay in San Francisco. We've stayed elsewhere when we've waited too long to book, but this is just the best. Well located, reasonably priced, lovely atmosphere. Just wonderful. Oh, and Pip the cat and Cookie the dog add to the charm, too.

This is a very nice B&B in a great location in SF. Nice room, nice bath, very quiet. My only complaint, being from the East Coast, is that breakfast isn't until 8:00 and we are all up very early because of the time change. We had to go out for coffee in the morning.

This hotel is a real treat for those looking for good old fashioned surroundings and way above average service. The friendly resident hotel cat (Pip) and the owner's Golden Retriever (Cookie) also add to the appeal of this quaint bed and breakfast inn, not to mention the complimentary late afternoon tea and homemade cookies, which are a real treat after spending a busy day sightseeing this great city.

I will tell everyone I know to stay at the Golden Gate. It was so wonderful. Not only were the rooms spotless, but they were charmingly well decorated. The breakfast was just perfect, warm croissants, fresh coffee and delicious orange juice. The antique elevator was so special and I adored all the little paintings throughout the property. From now on, I will only stay at the Golden Gate when I am in san Francisco.

This is a small b and b in a great location in San Francisco. There are two room types: small without bathroom and more expensive with bathroom. If you can stand sharing a bathroom, the small inexpensive room is a great choice.

Stayed for a weekend at the Golden Gate Hotel. Rates were absolutely amazing for the location, we were able to take transit or walk to all the places we wanted to go see. Our rooms were neat and for the most part we did not have to wait to use the washroom even though it was shared with others on the floor. The shared washrooms were also very clean and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. The walls for the room were a bit thin though so either wear ear-plugs or expect to be woken up very early in the morning/middle of the night.

A really pleasant place to stay and a change from the mainstream. We enjoyed the friendly personal atmosphere and the unique style of the accommodation - a greta way to see San Francisco!

I had a wonderful two nights at the Golden Gate Hotel. Breakfast was outstanding, the room a peaceful haven after long days exploring and the service very friendly. The cat, and dog at breakfast, were the cherry on top.

Ideal location with a very professional and helpful staff. Rooms nicely decorated and clean, although rooms are smallish even for two . Staff was willing to please with almost any request. Served up a nice continental breakfast, but seating was limited and backed up each AM. All in all was an enjoyable three day stay.

It was a great time. Right by Union Square and the enjoyable kitty, Pip, was our best friend.

We had a wonderful stay at the Golden Gate, we chose it for the location which is perfect, but we're really pleasantly surprised by the hotel. Everything felt recently refurbished and very tasteful. Breakfast was taken in a little parlour where you share tables and so get to meet other guests, it was continental style, which suits us fine, ie coffee, juice and croissants. In the afternoon they serve tea in the parlour so again it was quite a sociable time to swap tips. The staff/owners were exceptionally helpful. Overall outstanding value and somewhere we would definitely return to.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in August. This bed and breakfast is lovely. We enjoyed delicious croissants, muffins and coffee in the morning and afternoon tea and oatmeal cookies. It is immaculately clean and charmingly decorated. What a restful nights sleep on their comfy beds. We look forward to visiting again. We especially loved their cat and dog greeting us as we came in.

This was a great place to stay in San Fran. Location was within walking distance of Chinatown, Little Italy and Fisherman's Wharf. The rooms were quaint but really charming. The service was excellent and the owner's pets, Pip and Cookie were adorable. Will definitely stay here next time we are in San Fran.

After our last visit to San Francisco 15 years ago, we went back to Golden Gate Hotel and were reminded why we liked it the first time around. Great location, wonderful service, and a very international feel to our stay.

This was our second stay at the Golden Gate Hotel. I've heard that comment in many of the other reviews I've read on this hotel. It's no wonder, this place is excellent! If you rent a car as we did, the special arrangements they have for their hotel guests with the parking garage located directly across the street, will make you feel like you have your own personal valet. For those without a car, the hotel's location between Mason and Powell is the perfect starting point for access to local transportation means. During our week long stay in "The City", we came across several hotels in and around The Golden Gate. Although we gave some thought to checking them out for future stays, we found no reason to do so. The Golden Gate Hotel is, and will continue to be, our home away from home.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was comfortable, clean and well-kept. The location was really convenient for transit and our hosts were well organized and welcoming. Would definitely stay here again!

The Golden Gate Hotel near the small and only loosely identified 'french quarter' of San Francisco but the hotel has a definite european flavour. As would be expected in a european style hotel, rooms are small but quite adequate and clean, and very comfortable. Our room did not have an ensuite, so shared a bathroom, which was no more than a WC and shower stall in the hall nearby, but we had no problem during our stay with congestion for access or cleanliness of the facilities. Breakfast was also a european experience, being coffee/tea and croissants or muffin. Personally I found this quite an adequate start to the day, enhanced by the homely setting chatting with other guests in what amounts to a front parlour with the pets a nice domestic touch, whilst being well behaved and non-intrusive. The hotel is centrally located just a few blocks from Union Square and public transport is close by. In all, a charming hotel. I'd be very happy to stay there again on a future visit to the city.

The Golden Gate Hotel is not a Marriott or a Hilton, but if you want to experience San Francisco as it was in the early 20th century then this is the place for you. The hotel is extremely clean and if you love antiques, like we do, you're going to love both the early American feel of the hotel right down to the antique elevator and beautiful antique furnishings. The staff is excellent and extremely hospitable. You feel as though you've left new friends behind when you leave. Loved Pip the Kat and Cookie the Golden Retriever as well. The small bathrooms take a little getting used to but adds to the flavor of the hotel. We loved our week long stay at the hotel and if ever back in San Francisco we know where we will be staying. So, if you're looking for a big fancy modern hotel then stay at the Hilton but if you're looking to really experience San Francisco and it's history book your room at the Golden Gate Hotel.

My daughter & I loved our stay at the Golden Gate Hotel! It is truly located at the very heart of San Francisco...just so close and convenient to the best neighbourhoods in SF. Every requirement a weary traveller might desire (great food, parking station, laundromat, beauty salon, private masseur) is only a few short steps away. All the staff from the marmalade cat on down are just exceptional. We cannot wait to visit San Francisco and stay at the Golden Gate Hotel again!

We love, love, love staying at the Golden Gate Hotel. The rooms are charming and quirky, the feeling is like a European pensione. But the kicker is in the intangibles - the warm welcome you get from the staff, the way they care about the place and the guests, the ever-present atmosphere of generosity. I feel like I'm staying with old friends in a new city. It's a fantastic way to enjoy San Francisco.

The best part of staying at this hotel is the friendly staff. They could not have been more helpful. The only downside is the bed was probably a tad on the hard side but ignore this; the hotel is in a great location and the staff make the stay a memorable one.

I've stayed several times now, usually for events at Moscone. It so much nicer than a business hotel and half the cost too. They always go out of their way to be helpful and make great recommendations for less touristy eats nearby. Look forward to my next visit.

Love this location--walking distance to Union Square, cable cars, Nob Hill; easy access to lots of other places. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The beds are very comfortable and we found our room quiet. The decor is lovely, with individually designed rooms and thick rich wool carpet. The antique elevator is a treat. The parlor is a restful place to sit after a long day out, drinking tea and having a freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookie. We like this place so much better than the cookie-cutter chain hotels. This family-owned and -run place shows care and love in every detail. We stay here whenever we come to SF and can't wait to come again.

I booked here on the basis of the many laudatory reviews that this B&B had received. The praise was well deserved. Very cordial and helpful staff, beautifully maintained rooms and public areas, and a terrific buy for the price. A couple of notes. First, the breakfasts aren't much. Just croissants (and muffins one of the three mornings that I stayed there), plus coffee and tea. However, tea is also served in the late afternoon. Second, the hotel is dog-friendly and has a resident cat ("Pip"). I love both dogs and cats -- and Pip is a lot of fun -- so I thought it was great having them around. But if you're not so inclined, it might borther you. Third, the rooms come with and without attached bathrooms. I didn't realize this when I booked, so I ended up with my bath being down the hall. Not a show-stopper, but a minor irritation. If you want an attached bath, be sure to specify that and be prepared to pay a bit more. Fourth, a very positive note: the hotel has a deal with the garage across the strret. So you can park your car there for 24 hours, with unlimited in-and-out privileges, for $20. Maybe that sounds like a lot for where you live, but believe me, it's an unheard-of low price for downtown San Francisco. All in all, a fine place. I wish more B&B's were this good. You won't be disappointed.

the staff couldn't have been more kind and helpful and accommodating, and the rooms are so cute and impeccably clean. I stayed in one of the rooms where you share a bathroom down the hall. It made the stay even more affordable and was just as pleasant as having an en suite room. The antique elevator is a treasure.

My family were recently vacationing in San Francisco. Did'nt know much about the town or where to stay. We picked Golden Gate Hotel because it looked homey. What a pleasant surprise. The amenities and treatment/helpfulness of staff was first class from start to finish.

The Golden Gate is an excellent place to stay in San Francisco, close to Union Square , 1 block from the Cable Cars and 2 blocks from the trolley bus to the Wharf areas, handy to most other transport. Located close to transit, and also within walking distance of the BART, this is a great spot. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the hotel is clean and comfortable. It's old in a cool vintage-y kind of way.

For the price, this is a bargain. The rooms are on the smaller, older decorated side but that is made up for by the location, price, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff (Outstanding) and a good breakfast of hot tea and coffee and warm very tasty croissants for breakfast. Next time I am in San Francisco, I will be staying here again

Nice rooms in an old building where original details have been kept so no modern standards here. Lovely hotel and the hotel cat makes sure all guests behave.

1. Great location- Golden Gate is very close to Market Street. I was able to get up in the morning and run to the Fisherman's Wharf 2. Parking- they have valet parking in a parking garage directly across from the hotel entrance. 3. Guests- the group I encountered seemed to be the savvy travelers that knew they were looking for an experience off the beaten path. 4. Rooms- my room was very comfortable and I slept very well. Overall, I would absolutely stay at this hotel again!

Lovely calm, quiet hotel. Staff great - breakfast of cakes seemed odd to me as a European but that seems to be a US thing and not the hotel.

We choose this place for your stay in San Francisco because of the price, that was meeting our budget, and because of the nice reviews we red from other travellers. After our stay in this charming bed and breakfast we found it to be also very well positioned and we were very happpy about the breakfast (the best we got in our 20 days we spent in the USA, you can imagine how many other hotels and bed and breakfasts we visited! really a place to be recommended. we will for sre choose this place forn another trip to San Francisco!! Pros - Service is simply outstanding. They are attentive, courteous, and timely in all needs and definitely go the extra mile to make sure guests are accommodated. The building and rooms are charming, and give a wonderful authentic feel to a San Francisco experience. Cab service is very quick from the location, though it is cenrtal enough to walk to the Wharf, Chinatown, Alcatraz cruises and Little Italy. Cons - The area is noisy and a little seedy around the edges. We didn't sleep well due to yeling and loud music from what sounded like several parties in the area. The breakfast, is very limited, with just croissants/muffins and breakfast drinks. On a trip through five states and up the coast, this was also by far the most expensive stay we encountered, particularly when adding in the (discounted) 28.00/day per vehicle parking.

There was a wonderful international feel to staying here. The bathrooms had marble counters and clawfoot tubs. I loved the windows in our room that opened (like a door) to the sounds of the street. I heard the staff speaking different languages to some of the guests. Service was excellent in every way. The cat was an added enjoyment. Breakfast every day consisted of crosissants, coffee, and OJ. On our last day they had muffins, which were a welcome addition. My friend and I had this B&B recommended to us, and we were not disappointed. We both enjoyed our stay and highly recommend Golden Gate Hotel.

I loved my stay here!! I was in the best location ever to do all the things I wanted to do. I had bought the city pass on-line before getting there (I highly recommend this). It was only a 3 block walk (downhill) to Union Square to the visitor center to get my city-pass, then I could catch the street car or muni bus anywhere I wanted to go without having to pay each time. After that I could catch the street car 1/2 block from the hotel. The bus was 2 blocks from the hotel. Some excellent restaurants walking distance from the hotel. Some big name hotels were just blocks from here and charging 3 - 4 times the rate. The rate for parking across the street was an excellent rate, as I was checking out what all the other establishments were charging for overnight parking. If I ever get back to San Fran (which I hope to do again) I will definately stay here. Oh yeah, check out the jar of jelly bellys sitting in the window nook on your way up the stairs to your room - there is an elevator to help get you and your luggage up to the room.

This hotel is a rare gem! The room we stayed in was small, but beautiful and very clean. The warm croissants served for breakfast were excellent and the afternoon tea and cookies were a wonderful treat. The staff were welcoming and very helpful with restaurant and itinerary suggestions including flawless directions. The location of the hotel is very convenient. It is close to Union Square and Nob Hill as well as close to the cable car lines, bus lines and street car lines. I can't think of any way our stay at Golden Gate Hotel could have been better!

The staffs are friendly and helpful. Love the almond croissants during breakfast! If you are bored, spend a few minutes to play with their spoiled cat. Tip: Ask the staffs to get you some cat food to get it interested in you!

Great location in the Nob Hill area 2 blocks from the entrance to Chinatown. Bed and Breakfast feeling in a small hotel. Very accommodating staff, nice room and a good value. Under $200 in SF in the summer wasn't easy to find. We would stay here again without a second thought.

The Golden Gate provided a nice place to stay near several attractions, dining and shopping. The staff was friendly but not overbearing or nosey. For a newbie to San Fran it was a good choice.

My wife and I had a great 2 nights at GGH. We were there from a recommendation of friends from NYC - and their praise was well deserved. It's well located, good value and has a true European continental breakfast (vs so many US chains idea of one.)

Very friendly service, rooms were clean. Breakfast exceeded my expectations. We had to share a bathroom on our floor which was small, but it was clean and met my needs. Location was good and close to one of the cable car lines.

This was a charming hotel in a perfect location from which to explore San Francisco. My only complaint would be that breakfast started too late. We were anxious to get started with our plans for the day, and found it hard to wait around to eat first. We stayed 5 nights, and only stuck around for breakfast 3 of the mornings. Every morning we would go out around 6:00 am to get coffee from a neighborhood shop, and often met several others from the hotel doing the same. It would be nice if we could at least get a cup of coffee or tea before 8:00 or 8:30 am.

We stayed for for 5 nights at the end of June, early July of 2012, and quite enjoyed this hotel. The room, although small (typical of older hotel rooms in this city), was comfortable, clean and in an ideal location to walk and explore the city or grab a cable car or bus. The simple croissant breakfasts were more than adequate to send us out for the day, and were an ideal time to talk and visit with other guests and the owners about what to see and do. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual, and the owners were friendly and very helpful. We would love to go back on our next time in San Francisco!

Very lovely and peaceful hotel, and great location in SF People are very kind ant the evening recptionnist is very nice and gave us a lot of very good restaurant adress It's a typical building of SF with a lot of old pictures, a cat and a dog ! A little breakfast is included in the price It's really perfect for a stay in SF ! I'll return again !

We spent two nights at the Golden Gate Hotel. We were very happy with the location – just a short walk to Chinatown and Union Square. We took the BART from the airport and it wasn’t too strenuous – just one steep street to climb uphill. Close to other forms of public transportation, too. We easily caught a bus that took us straight to AT&T Park – for $2.00! The hotel itself is attractive and well kept. Rooms are small and clean. Just what we needed. We opted for the shared bath and had no issues with it. Continental breakfast was very good, although they did not have enough room for all of the guests to eat in dining area at once, so we were politely asked to finish up so that the next round of guests could sit. Overall, it was a great value. We would definitely return!

The rooms are small but the beds are top notch. The windows open. The hotel is spotless and cozy and interesting. The staff will make you feel at home here. We loved our stay at the Golden Gate.

The best part of our stay at Golden Gate Hotel was the resident cat, Pip, who obviously ran the place. He sat on the desk as you were checking in and out, investigated all luggage to make sure it was up to snuff, lay in empty laptop cases to keep them warm and headbutted my son so that his glasses were knocked off. He also acts a food inspector. When my daughter and I were eating sandwiches for dinner in the dining room, Pip got onto the table and watched our every bite to make sure we didn't choke on our food -- what an attentive host. There was also a dog there one day, whose name I do not recall. He was obviously low animal on the totem pole since with just a light touch of his paw, Pip could make him move. Loved the delicious hot chocolate at breakfast (we are not coffee drinkers) and warm croissants. The location was great and we could walk to China Town or hop on the bus and go to Golden Gate Park. I only wish that there was free parking!! On Sunday, there is free parking and if you are smart, you can find a space that is free until 7 a.m. on Monday. Read all parking signs carefully or you may not find your car where you left it. Meter signs and parking signs do not agree -- parking signs are the ultimate authority.

I booked this hotel for a conference I was attending based on the reviews online. I was not disappointed. The staff goes out of their way to help you, the breakfast is delicious (good coffee and fresh croissants) and the bed was sooooooo comfy! Great value, super location! Buy a t-shirt as a remembrance of the trip--they are only $10 and they feature "Pip" the cat on them--the resident feline. Best deal in town.

Near to the Downtown and the Chinatown, i booked by other recommendations, and GG Hotel was a excellent option! Clean and confortable room, warm attention y and Pip, the orange cat, was a great desk manager :)

Very good location next to the Cable-Car. The room was beautyful and clean. The included braekfast exceeded my expection. If you are traveling by car, you can park across the street in a garage for 28$ per day (good price for SF), including a hoteldiscount. Or rent it by Alamo. The only thing I was missing was a minibar.

I was so fortunate to find this jewel. My granddaughter's introduction to bed and breakfast was a success. Service was outstanding and the location was convenient to cable cars,Union Square, and China Town. We had a wonderful time.

We stayed at the Golden Gate Hotel for the second time in June, 2012. It was just as wonderful as we remembered it. Our charming room overlooked the street which was very quiet at night. We were able to walk to Union Square to catch the cable car, shop, dine, or just act like a tourist. The continental breakfast in the lobby was just what we needed each day to get started. And having tea after a rough day of site-seeing was truly a great way to relax. We highly recommend this hotel for the accommodations and the great people (and animals) on staff.

Staff was great... always willing to accomodate. Furnished beautifully with antitques, old photos & a restored 1913 elevator. And, Pip, the cat mianders around greeting everyone who comes and goes. We're looking forward to a return visit!

WE stayed in this hotel for 2 nights. Excellent front desk service with a nice friendly demeanor. Always ready to help. The antique elevator was a blast. Rooms were very clean and no issues with the bathroom. Continental breakfast and the afternoon tea were also a pleasant surprise. Good location in the city.

Nice room, friendly cat. Would recommend a room not on the front because of late night street noise. Had a good stay, good value and a nice location.
