Golden Gate Hotel

Cozy, friendly gem in the Nob Hill area, situated just a couple of blocks from Chinatown entrance and Union Square shopping and eateries. The hotel serves warm, fresh baked croissants for breakfast that are superb! All the staff are top-rate and helpful.

The bed and breakfast is in a fantastic location. The rooms are quaint and very lovely with nice furnishings that give the hotel character and charm. Breakfast and afternoon tea are offered free and give a lovely homely atmosphere to your stay. We loved it and highly recommend the hotel for it's friendly service, cleanliness, charm and great location.

This is a very warm and welcoming Inn. The staff are very friendly and helpful with anything you might need, they even loaned me an umbrella when I went out to dinner on a drizzly evening. One day it was a little chilly, and I returned in the afternnon to find warm tea and cookies and a cozy fire going in the fireplace. It was very comforting and Pip the cat was in the lounge area everyday to welcome everyone - very sweet kitty. Also has a very cool antique elevator in case your too tired to take the stairs after touring through the city.

As a returning customer, I'm happy to report on yet another very pleasant stay. My wife was with me this time, and some good friends. They wondered if such a small hotel could really be such an excellent place to stay. I told them in advance that if they didn't like it, there would have to be something wrong with them! Of course, they loved it. There is no doubt that the GGH is where we will be staying when we return to San Francisco.

What a lovely place, very friendly and homely, we particularly enjoyed the complimentary afternoon tea and cookies. Breakfast was tasty muffins and a very social affair in the small intimate lounge. Our room was small as I would have expected for the budget price but clean and comfortable.

This was a great recommendation from Frommers. This hotel was in the heart of the Union Square district, clean, comfortable and very personable. The staff was wonderul. We met several of the other guests and learned they are all "regulars" at this hotel whenever they come to San Francisco. We will be back as well.

This is a great location, walking distance to Chinatown, Union Square, Market Street, Nob Hill, and public transportation, including BART, is nearby. Lovely coffee and tea at the continental breakfast, and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. There's a cat who lives there and a dog who visits on weekends with the owners, so if you have allergies, this may not be the place for you.

What a delightful surprise awaited me in San Francisco! I was greeted by a warm fireplace with a welcoming cat (Pip). I wanted to save money, so I had reserved a small room with a bathroom down the hall. I found the room to be quaint, and very clean, with a sink, comfortable bed, and bathroom very close by. All the people I met who worked at the GG were helpful, friendly, and accommodating. The location was perfect: I walked to Chinatown, North Beach and down to the Embarcadero in half an hour. Moscone Center was no more than 10 minutes. I would stay again in a heartbeat--just another reason why I left my heart in San Francisco!!

The staff make this place what it is. Each brings something special to the experience. I always feel welcome and cared for, which means a lot during business travel.

Don't hesitate to book this great find if you don't need/want all the frills of a big box hotel. This is pure neighborhood delight: authentic, welcoming, historic, well maintained. We stayed for four nights and will return again as this is now our favorite San Fran accomodation.

As advertised, GGate Hotel is a lovely base for exploring San Francisco. Centrally located, and the staff knowledgable and helpful. Continental breakfast and afternoon tea are particularly welcoming on rainy winter days. Clean and comfortable. My single room was charmingly decorated - and perfect for a small person. Keep up the good work!

I stayed in this hotel twice and it was so good I would stay there again if I needed to. The whole experience was excellent - the staff were so helpful, the rooms were cozy and tasteful, the beds were wonderfully comfortable and the breakfast was good. I would recommend this hotel as being one of the best experiences I have had of a hotel internationally so far.

Golden Gate Hotel has fantastic staff and is a great little community. The owners are very affable and involved. The rooms are compact, but very clean, comfortable and well furnished, which is just what were looking for. Tea time and breakfast are delicious. The resident cat Pip is an added bonus (he spent two nights with us in our room). I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting SF.

Great location with a warm welcome on arrival. The most comfortable bed ever, like sleeping on a cloud. Loved the dining room for great breakfasts and afternoon tea. A chance to meet and talk to people from around the world. Nice touch. Pip the cat and Cookie the dog add a homely touch which makes the experience so delightful. My stay at the Golden Gate Hotel was very pleasant and relaxing. The employees did their best successfully to help you with every concern you may have during your sojourn in San Francisco. The B&B is located central in San Francisco so all important public transportation lines are within walking distance. All things considered I can only give the recommendation to choose the Golden Gate Hotel for your stay in San Francisco.

We stayed for 2 nights and loved the place. It was more like staying at home or with friends than a hotel or B&B. The location is also fantastic. I will surely be staying there again when I am in San Francisco. Highly recommended.

A nice place, silence, super clean..just a little bite stingy with the breakfast

Super-friendly staff made the place feel very homey. The parking arrangement was very good for the heart of a big city - $25/day in the valet lot across the street with as many ins and outs as desired. We LOVED the vintage 1913 elevator (the oldest working one in SF, we're told) that worked like a charm! They had a sweet little hotel cat named Pip, who made us miss our own kitties a bit less. Bed mattress was alright but the down duvet was super-cozy. We'd definitely stay again.

The Golden Gate came highly recommended to us - and we are so glad we stayed there - nothing is too much trouble for the staff - comfortable clean rooms - great location - we were sad to leave !

Rooms are comfortable and quiet, yet the hotel is just a few blocks away from all the shopping and sightseeing of San Francisco. There are resident dogs and a cat, so you won't miss your own pets so much. And the breakfast is great! They know how to brew a proper cup of tea. Overall, it feels like a little slice of Europe.

My mother and I stayed here with my 2-year old daughter and we loved it. I was surprised when they served us a nice breakfast of warm pastries, coffee, and juice. I was expecting to serve myself cold croissants. The second day they brought it to our room! My daughter really enjoyed the kitty and the dog. It is close to everything downtown. I recommend it!

Charming, warm, spotless and wonderful. The owners and all of the staff were accommodating, helpful, cheerful and pleasant. breakfast (croissants, muffins and coffee) and tea were timely and perfect. The room was lovely and spotless. Location could not be beat - near cable car stop, BART, Union Square and can walk to Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Nob Hill. I will return!!

Most welcoming and helpful. especially with phonr calls, IT taxi to airport etc. My room delightfully furnished, and very quiet. tea always available with delicious cookies. Very central, walking distance to a lot of things.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Golden Gate Hotel on Bush Street. It is a very warm and homey place, and the owners and staff are very accomodating. The location for touring downtown San Francisco is ideal and the cable car even stops at the Powell and Bush intersection. We would go there again.

I had to share a bathroom because a room with a private bath was not available. It worked out okay. My room was small but very comfortable. Everything was immaculate and there were nice touches to add comfort to the room.. Only had the continental breakfast one day but it was yummy, and afternoon tea was nice. Good location and felt very safe and secure. Only downside was that I did hear noise from other rooms the first night; walls are thin enough to hear neighbors at times. But most guests are probably going to be quieter types of folks, I'd guess. Th other nights I was there I didn't notice it. I would definitely go back.

This was the second time in 10 years that I stayed at GGH. Just me - but its reassuring to see the same family welcome you in 2011 as they did in 2001. If you need a reasonable place to stay that is centrally located, please look no further. Enjoy!

It was an absolute pleasure to stay at the Golden Gate Hotel. From the moment we entered this beautiful building, we felt comfortable and relaxed. The antique elevator took us up to our floor and Spencer showed us into our charming room and gave us a complete rundown of everything we needed to know about the hotel and about wandering around this great city. The breakfast was served with a smile and the almond croissants were superb! I slept incredibly well and woke up refreshed every morning. I can't speak highly enough of the hotel and it's staff. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to spend time in San Francisco.

Enjoyed my stay at the Golden Gate. Clean, quiet, friendly (thanks Halim for the tip on where to jump onto the cable car- saved me at least 45 minute wait in line!), and some tasty coffee in the morning. Had a room where I used the communal bathroom down the hall and found it clean and acceptable. Loved the fantastic location; I walked Everywhere from there.

A nice hotel, but not really a bargain. Breakfast is with croissants and muffins, plus fresh orange juice, but it only starts at eight, so may be a bit late for early risers or those who have to attend a meeting. Central location, yet quiet.

Excellent location. Very good value. Simple but very efficient rooms. Not all rooms with private bath but the room we had was just perfect. No excessive Victorian design. Just rightly done. Very good service. Will definitely book again if back in SF.

we reserved a room with a private bath and were very disappointed. the rooms with a private bath are very small - maybe 120 square feet and very modestly appointed. the television was a joke and the wireless connection was weak. we stayed one night and went somewhere else. i would not recommend the place to anyone else.

The hotel industry does high end (amenity laden, pricey) and low end (cheap, not so clean), but never what I want: clean, simple and reasonably priced. Until now: the Golden Gate Hotel was so dead on that I don't expect to ever stay anywhere else when I'm in the City. The room's simplicity was part of what made it relaxing: I didn't have to dig through a book full of services. It won't be to everyone's taste, but if you prefer fresh air over a/c, stairs over elevators, and conversation over TV, then GGH could suit you to a tee. (I did enjoy the trying to guess the source of the in-room flat screen -- its style was as odd as any antique, but futuristic in a neo-Soviet kind of way.)

What a great little hotel near the financial district. It was within walking distance of everything I wanted to do: Alcatraz, Moscone Center, and even Golden Gate Park (though that was quite the hike!)

We stayed for 4 nights to celebrate our anniversary. It was nice. Good location, could walk to most places in Union Square and Chinatown. Drove our car to places further out. With the car garage for parking our car, it was a bit pricey for us. We liked the breakfast and really enjoyed the old elevator. The staff were extremely helpful. The guest room was small, but clean. Will stay again when we can get enough money together.

Stayed here for 5 nights at the end of October 2011 in a double room with shower (shared WC at end of hallway) and it was a perfect place from which to explore San Francisco. The location is excellent, near to Union Square and easy to hop on the cable car and BART. The level of service was outstanding, particularly for the price. All staff were helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. My room was impeccably cleaned each day and the cats and dogs added to the warm and homely atmosphere. Afternoon tea each day was a lovely touch on top of the fresh breakfst provided in the morning. I'd return, and reccomend Golden Gate Hotel to others. Good value hotels are hard to come by in San Fran!

I love the small, clean rooms, with soft pillows, smooth sheets and soft towels. The pictures in the hallways are fascinating. The breakfast has excellent coffee and pastries. It is in such a convenient location, but is so quiet.

Great location, you can walk everywhere. Convenient to bus and cable car. The room exceeded my expectation. It was a nice size and very comfortable for two people. The bath room is small. The staff was friendly and went out of there way to make sure we had everything we needed.

Stayed here with my wife for a short weekend visit. The rooms were very clean and very comfortable. The place has a very European feel to it. We opted for one of the "shared bathroom" units, and although we did have to go down the hall for the toilet, our room included a sink and shower stall, so it really wasn't that big of a deal. The breakfast each morning was delicious homemade croissants and muffins -- again, very European. For the price we paid, you couldn't find a better place to stay in this part of the city. We would highly recommend the Golden Gate Hotel and it's at the top of our list for the next time we visit San Fran.

We stayed 3 nights at the Golden Gate and enjoyed the convenience of the location. The city was having a heat wave and with no air conditioning (not generally a requirement in SF) the room was on the warm side - requiring keeping the window open. Our only complaint due to being on the street side was the traffic noise in the early morning and noisy people late at night. San Fran has it's share of honkers and motorcycles! All in all I would still stay here again, the staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel clean and cosy. I would ask for a room in the back though.

It was my first trip to San Francisco, and although I had heard many stories I was very interested to see the city through my own eyes. We had such a great time, starting with the Golden Gate Hotel. The people were friendly, the room was clean, the building was quiet and it was nice to meet people while we had a cup of tea in the afternoon. Pip the cat was very quiet and didn't bother anyone. When I return to the area I will stay at the Golden Gate Hotel.

We stayed at the Golden Gate Hotel for four nights in mid-October. We arrived quite late in the evening, but Spencer was ready & waiting for us. There was no sign of Pip, the Desk Manager, which was a little disappointing as we'd been looking forward to meeting him for some time. No matter, as we'd soon spend plenty of time with the charming little chappy. Our room was situated on the top floor, and gave a great view over Bush Street. The wonderful old elevator whisked us up in old-world style, where Spencer showed us to our room and helped with our luggage. The room was lovely. Furnished with antique/period furniture, including a small table and chairs, with a very nice bathroom. The bed was so comfortable that I managed a full thirteen hours' sleep, still dressed, as jet-lag caught up with me on our second night. Although the room overlooked an often busy Bush Street, we weren't interrupted or affected by the noise at all. After 10pm, though, the street is pretty quiet. Breakfast is a simple affair. Fresh croissants and muffins, teas and coffee, and fresh fruit. Simple as it is, though, the breakfast is excellent, and is a welcome change to the usual American breakfast. At the end of a day's sightseeing, return to the hotel between 3 and 6 and you'll be greeted by freshly-baked raisin cookies and tea. This is a great way to wind down after a busy day. At this point, Pip was sitting on reception. We persuaded him to follow us up the stairs. Once in, he checked our room over to make sure that Housekeeping was up to standard, and then he settled in for a very purry sleep on one of our chairs, where he remained for a few hours until we had to go out. The service you receive here is brilliant. It's as though you're staying with friends. The Golden Gate Hotel is my go-to hotel of choice in San Francisco - I won't bother looking elsewhere when I next visit the city.

This is the quirkiest hotel we've stayed in so there is a lot to recommend about this place - loved the almost antique feel to the place. Would have loved a tiny fridge in the room, and the bathroom was quite small, but it was so unique to stay here that I would recommend it to anyone wanting a taste of the real San Francisco. Also the breakfast in the morning was really nice!

I had a lovely 2 night stay at the Golden Gate Hotel in October 2011. Travelling by myself it was the perfect place to stay. I felt very well looked after, the hotel was handy to all of the places I wanted to visit with easy public transport links and great advice from John and Renate. I would recommend this hotel to others without hesitation.

This compact yellow nest on Bush St. exceeded our expectations in most areas. The rooms are not large but very workable. The bathrooms, too, are small but functional. The footed large tub also was the shower with non slip porcelain, a rain showerhead and curtains that kept the water where it was supposed to stay, rather than on the floor. Very pleasant and interesting people for around the world populate the afternoon tea and morning continental breakfast. The staff are available but not pushy. They are knowledgable regarding public transportation and local restaurants. As would be expected, there is some road noise but the quality of the bed, sheets and comforter made sleeping easy. We will stay here on future visits to San Francisco.

Our stay was simply outstanding. The Golden Gate is centrally located, the team that run the B&B are fantastic and nothing is ever a bother. The team are very helpful, supportive and knowledgeable. They cannot do enough to try and help you with any query or request you may have. Breakfast is a treat with crispy croissants and muffins; and if you happen to be there for afternoon tea it is always delightful with tea and freshly baked biscuits. Whilst we were there several locals drop in for afternoon tea and the conversation was interesting and stimulating. The Golden Gate is spotless, the linen fresh and the rooms decorated tastefully. I will definitely be returning with all my family next time. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the team at the Golden Gate for making my stay in San Fran memorable and an absolute pleasure. Very nice hotel, great staff, careful service, convenient location. I did not expect my room with shared facilities to have a shower. The afternoon tea is a very nice idea! Yet, the rooms and above all the shared bathroom are pretty small, that is why I rated them "just" 4

We recently spent 4 nights at the Golden Gate Hotel, our first stay at this lovely place, a special trip for our anniversary. Our flight arrived late in the evening Wednesday night and the staff was so kind in checking us in to our room quickly, after midnight. The croissants, coffee and juice every morning were excellent and a great start to our day. Staff was just so friendly and helpful at all times. The room was perfect, not huge but so thoughtfully arranged. Every little detail was attended to. Where I looked for a hook for my coat, there it was, and so on. Great antique furnishings, and hallways wonderfully decorated with vintage photos and whimsical painted details. Of course, perfectly clean, and a very comfortable place to be! Also fun to have a resident cat & dog on the premises. Location was very good, an easy walk from BART and not too far from other points of interest. Would definitely stay here again!

Our stay at the Golden Gate was chosen really on a whim...we liked the name. Now we can honestly say it equalled our experience at the bridge itself. Both were outstanding and we would highly recommend this hotel. If you are looking for comfort and cleanliness in a very central location, stay here.

We spent two wonderful nights here and were so happy with every aspect of our stay. The rooms were perfect for our needs, small, but how much time are you actually in the room?? The location could not have been better...just around the corner to the trolley and bus stops.....a couple blocks from Union Station for great shopping....and only a couple to China Town. Great little restautant across the street...Uncle Vitos. Service was great, very friendly and helpful with directions around town etc. Breakfast was nice...just enough to get you started for the day. The front desk clerk was very helpful and eager to make our stay comfortable and fun. We had a late flight on checkout day, so he offered to hold our luggage so we could enjoy the day before leaving for the airport. They definitely went the extra mile to make it a wonderful trip. The neighbrhood seemed very safe and clean. We walked to dinner at night and felt very safe. We will definitely be back to San Fran. and will also choose the Golden Gate Hotel again!! You cant beat the valu e and location!!!

It was our second stay at the Golden Gate Hotel. A perfect place to discover San Francisco. While about the rooms a little bit small, we felt so comfortable. It is realy nice here and on our next visit we´ll sure come back.

We had a wonderful time at the Golden Gate Hotel. The rooms were charming and I enjoyed meeting people from all over the country at breakfast and at tea time. My only request would be to make coffee available before 8:00 a.m.

The service and friendliness are just wonderful. Also, their parking situation is quite a plus. This lovely little inn is such a good value--we always stay there. I only wish there was some protein at breakfast--yogurt or boiled eggs or something. But I do love the Golden Gate hotel, and see no need to look eleswhere.

This place is centrally located and is close to union square, shopping, restaurants and transportation. The rooms are clean, but small, but what isn`t in San Francisco. The staff are friendly and accomodating. I would not hesitate to stay here again. Pip the cat is awesome.

We recently spent 7 nights staying at the Golden Gate Hotel, which turned out to be our home away from home. The rooms were quiet, comfortable and extremely clean. Golden Gate's staff were friendly and helpful and went that "extra mile". For example, even at 10 o'clock at night, after arriving back at our room from a busy day of sightseeing, they still had time to make us a nice, hot pot of tea, complemented by delicious cookies! So thoughtful and much appreciated! The Golden Gate Hotel is in a fairly central location, not far to the Powell-Mason cable car, pleasant places to have breakfast, late-night diners and the Union Square shopping area. We would thoroughly recommend a stay at this gracious establishment. We most certainly would love to stay at the Golden Gate Hotel again! Brilliant place from which to spend time in S F. Close to the cable car and very homely, rooms are smallish which is to be expected but the service was top class. In our three week stay in the US no motel or hotel offered better service. We cannot praise them enough

What a wonderful find! We were in town for a family reunion, and two families in our party booked here on the rating of TripAdvisor. We were very pleased and will go back and will also recommend to any friends traveling to San Francisco.

the staff was very welcoming and helpful. i had a late flight leaving SFO and they kept my luggage and enabled me to take a shower before going to the airport! very nice an cozy rooms - great location - everything is in easy reach by foot, bicycle, cable car.

My wife and I stayed in the city for the evening before driving north the next day and had a fun stay at the Golden Gate Hotel. The rooms were cozy, which was not a surprise given that this is a small older hotel, and we opted for the shared bathroom to save a bit. The hotel had so much character and the staff was as nice as they could be. The continental breakfast was tasty baked goods and coffee that we could not get enough of and the shared seating made the morning conversation with other guests a great way to start the day. The location was within walking distance of so many of the great San Fran hot spots like China Town, Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower, Union Square, Little Italy, Broadway, etc.

Loved San Francisco and this place added to our experience. Host was super helpful in suggesting areas to visit and assisted with booking. Breakfast croissants and muffins were a great way to start the day. Complimentary afternoon tea served in the parlour was a lovely touch. Central location, close to Powell St cable car. Clean and cosy. Also helped us as there was a National rental car company just across the street where we picked up our car on departure. And a friendly cat Pip! Thanks for a very enjoyable stay in a great city. Hope to be back one day and would definitely stay here again.

This B&B is in the perfect location! Overall it's a fab place to stay but is very basic for the money. The staff are brilliant - very friendly and helpful and the rooms accomodate your needs. The only thing we wasn't keen on was the breakfast - crossaints and muffins everyday wasn't really our thing.

The b&b suited the purpose of being a great stay while exploring San Francisco and the continental breakfast in the morning was delicious! We booked the Golden Gate Hotel on the recommendation of it in Frommers San Francisco 2011 guidebook and were expecting a little Bed and Breakfast hotel with a good location. Its charm and period furnishings and lovely decor made it a delightful and personality-filled place to stay. Its location is excellent and the staff were all friendly and very helpful. The lovely contintental breakfasts and complimentary afternoon tea were a refreshing bonus too. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a characterful place to stay while exploring this beautiful city. 10/10. And Pip the resident ginger tabby cat meant that we did not miss our own cats too badly while we were away. Loved it.

The Golden Gate Hotel was a great success for us - tired off a long flight but welcomed into an unpretentious but comfortable location. Easy walikng distance to all that San Francisco has to offer, with welcoming hosts and an easy-going atmosphere.

We loved our stay here. Our room was so charming. The location was great--perfect for walking to interesting sights. The innkeepers were friendly and helpful. We would definitely go back for another stay.

The Golden Gate Hotel is a pleasant little victorian corner in San Francisco, tastefully decorated. We were a group of five people staying in town for a few days in August, and we stayed very well. Fundamentals things are all right: it is a clean and silent place. Most of all, the affability and availability of the Hotel team makes this place more than advisable. The afternoon tea, with handmade cookies, is superb. If we really want to find a fault, rooms are somewhat small but, anyway, they are fine. Pets here are welcome and Pip, their beautiful red cat, is a soft and discrete presence

A very nice place to stay. First the room and service are just great. Second it is an ideal location to reach all tourist attractions either on foot or by nearby cable car lines. We will certainly choose it again for our next stay in San Francisco. (This is based on our recent 4 nights stay.)

We have spent 4 nights in Golden Gate Hotel. Location was great. Room was nice, and even though it was with shared batrooms, we had a shower in our room.

The staff (including the pets) were very welcoming and did their best to make our stay most pleasant. We loved the elevator and the whimsical artwork in its shaft. Breakfast was a pleasant, unhurried start and afternoon tea and cookies a welcome respite after a day of touring. It was truly a home away from home. Perfect location - easy access to Union Square and Chinatown. Just steps away from cable car. Service was superb, rooms are homey, bathrooms spotless. Staff very welcoming, including the furry ones. Hope to go back someday!

This small hotel absolutely lives up to the rave online reviews. Full of charm, eccentricity and probably the most helpful and delightful staff I have met in a long time. Do not miss the wonderful, complimentary breakfast of warm muffins, croissants and endless tea/coffee and the afternoon tea with home-mad biscuits. Beautifully decorated with sensitive feel for the period building, well located - highly recommended.

This delightful bed & breakfast is in a wonderful old building with lots of original features. Union Square is about 3 minutes walk away and in about 15 to 20 minutes you're at Fisherman's Warf. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and nothing was too much trouble. There were plenty croissants and muffins at breakfast and you could have ore if you wanted. I would stay here again.

Enjoyed our stay at this wonderful bed and breakfast. The staff was helpful with suggestions. We especially enjoyed meeting other guests at breakfast.

My husband and I stayed here for six nights in mid-August, 2011. Our room, costing a mere $105 per night, was small but extremely neat and clean and had charming decor. All the hotel staff members we met were notably friendly and always offered help but were not pushy or invasive. Breakfast (included in the above cost) was simple (toast, muffins, or croissants and tea or coffee) but adequate and served efficiently and with a smile. The animals--a golden retriever (Cookie), a Boston terrier (Patsy), and an orange tabby cat (Pip)--were also complete delight. We enjoyed visiting with the pups in the morning, and Pip was a guest in our room on a few different nights. Finally, the location (about two blocks from Union Square) was unbeatable at the price. All in all, we were impressed and thoroughly enjoyed our stay--it was more than worth what we paid.

If you are looking for a quaint B & B in the center of San Francisco with easy trolley and bus access, this is the place! The staff was the most accommodating I've experienced and our room was wonderful and quiet and night, which is sometimes hard to get in the city. We were provided a room on the 3rd floor with a private bath overlooking an interior garden courtyard. Couldn't have been happier.

Talk about a charmer of a hotel, the Golden Gate Hotel is a true delight, with a very homey, relaxed feel, and cheerful decor that piques your interest at every turn. The owners and staff are very warm people..."take a croissant for your daughter" who had just pulled up to take us to the airport. The resident dog and cat were as sweet as could be. We loved staying here.

We stayed at Golden Gate Hotel in August and we loved it! The location could not be better, the people working in the hotel are very friendly and helpful, the rooms really cute. There are so many lovely details: a funny cat hanging around in the reception area, an antique elevator and wonderful furniture, cookies and tea in the afternoon.... We can highly recommend this B&B! Lovely little hotel just beyond the hubbub of Union Square. Tastefully decorated, with the halls full of old photographs and the rooms cheerful and airy. Very clean, very friendly. The cat and small dog are an added benefit! Breakfast is basic but the coffee and tea are both excellent. I stayed in a double room at the back with shared bath, and it was pretty quiet. Overall, great value for the price.

i had read positive reviews about golden gate hotel but was still unprepared for how charming the accommodation was. The rooms were small but very tastefully appointed and very crisp and clean. The beds were extremely comfortable. The staff were exceptionally helpful and demonstrated genuine concern for the comfort and enjoymentof guests. The resident 'pets' added to the overall charm of the experience. The location of the hotel was perfect with it's close proximity to union square.

The staff at the Golden Gate Hotel were very friendly and helpful. They offered suggestions on places to eat and some ideas on what to see. During the morning breakfast and afternoon tea they made sure we had beverages and refills as needed and asked if there was anything else we'd like. Great service!

I brought my mother to San Francisco to celebrate her birthday. We loved the original birdcage elevator, the old photographs in the hallways, the clawfoot bathtub, and of course the orange kitty. Would definitely stay here again.

Tired of the standard chain motels, I was happy to find Golden Gate Hotel. It was perfect for me and reasonably priced. I love older things and the ambiance of a European hotel was warm and inviting. Would stay here again and have already recommended it to others.

From the moment we arrived we were impressed with the helpful service. Bags were collected from the car whilst directions and advice were given on how and where to park. This is a great hotel and exceptional value for money. Its location is so convenient. Don't think twice. Just book it!

This is a great place to stay. It is spotlessly clean, and the staff is welcoming and helpful. The croissants in the morning are delicious. It is in a great location--right down the street from the cable cars. You can't go wrong staying here.

Although the room we choose to take was small, it was fine for a few days. Everyone at the house was more than helpful and the tea with cookies in the afternoon was a really nice touch.

The Golden Gate Hotel is an excellent bed and breakfast, which is situated in the heart of San Francisco (Chinatown, Union Square, most important museums, cable car, BART train station, bus station - everything is within walking distance). The staff was very friendly and helpful and it was no problem to leave my baggage at the hotel after check-out. I felt very welcome and safe and everyone tried to make my stay in San Francisco as pleasant as possible. I definitely will come back!!! It was one of the best Hotels I ever stayed in!!!

My partner and I recently stayed at the Golden Gate Hotel in San Francisco,and have nothing but positive things to say about it. When looking for somewhere to stay, it was by far the cheapest but the service provided there is nothing but first class. A special Thank you goes out to our concierge Gregg, who was just amazing, and extremely attentive, answering any questions that we had, in addition to giving us ideas of where to eat and visit. The sort of service I would never expect at a much larger hotel, which is why I also prefer such quaint places. Our budget was tight and so we opted for the room with the shared bathroom, and you would never had known we were sharing it. We never had to wait very long, and it was always kept completely clean. The location of the hotel is also great. There is a bit of a walk to the Fisherman's Whalf, but a good walk, which takes you through China Town and Little Italy, so we felt we got to see so much of the town this way. Union Square is also down the road which has some excellent shopping! A cable car stops right outside too, which is handy. I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone, and would most definitely return if I'm ever lucky enough to visit San Francisco again.

We wanted a small hotel rather than a large one close to the centre if activity and this was exactly as expected. The service was great, they booked some of our tours for us. If you don't need or want a big bustling hotel, this was fine. We were more than happy worth it, we stayed 3 nights and all was fine.

Staff were very helpful with directions and places to dine. Rooms were very comfortable. It was like a home away from home. Will stay there again. Excellent value for money , and also very central to all modes of transport

Loved the Golden Gate Hotel! Such a charming B&B only a short walk from Union Square. This place has everything - and for such a reasonable price! The staff are friendly, helpful, and professional. Our room was immaculate, quiet, and completely functional. Antique furniture and decor are everywhere, including an old-fashioned lift. Continental breakfast includes baskets of croissants, toast, muffins with tea, juice, and delicious french-press coffee. You'll meet other guests and chat with a few members of the staff while the resident cat, Pip, curls up on a chair in the entry room. Finally, after spending the day out and about, there is nothing better than coming back to tea and freshly baked cookies in the afternoon. I'll definitely be staying here again when I return to San Francisco! Highly recommended!

Love staying here in comfortable cozy room two blocks from Union Square shopping. Staff is always helpful and attentive -- and love giving a pet to Pip the resident cat. Wish they had coffee earlier than 8:00 am as that is long time to wait for jet lagged early riser! Otherwise no complaints.

I loved the other guests--very open minded, and several people from other countries. Owner came to my rescue when I bought a case of wine and it was too heavy to carry. He tied it up with rope and saved me. Thank you. The room was adorable--I LOVED it. Comfy pillows, nice little sink, beautiful furniture--even come antiques. There was nothing cheap about the furniture--it felt like somebody's well-loved and well-cared for home. The bathroom across the hall was always available and clean and the breakfast was great--just muffins, croissants etc and juice, tea and coffee, but they were very accommodating. I open took my breakfast to my room so that I could watch the news while eating. ALso, the internet was very fast. I will send my daughter there in the fall.

I had a vague notion about taking a trip to SF, which I hadn't visited in 15 yrs. Perusing the endless lodging possibilities, I found this lovely place, and that it comes with a cat, determined that I had to visit. I'm certain Pip (the cat) has seduced many to Golden Gate Hotel. It is everything I want in a B&B ~ small, well located, well tended, comfortable beds and bedding, which is a major deal for me, intimate breakfast seating that allows and encourages conversation among strangers, strong coffee, excellent croissants, and bonus: a cat. The hotel clearly states they serve a continental breakfast, so any reviewers who complained of daily croissants do not understand what is meant by a traditional continental breakfast If your breakfast demands include a greater selection, or full breakfast, welllll, there are many other lodging choices, not to mention a few available restaurants everywhere you look. I love to travel but due to some medical problems I dread the possibility of a too firm bed, nasty foam pillows or scratchy crappy linens. No problem here. My bed was quite comfy, the pillows and duvet were equally great, so my only pain was from walking the monster hills of SF. I never made it to an afternoon tea/ cookie/ fruit event, but passing through, there was a lot of lively engagement between guests. San Francisco is a major city and the hotel is on a major street. Light sleepers and people not accustomed to city noises will best be served by requesting a room not facing the street, or choose earplugs if you are able to sleep with them. The room and bath were small, but frankly, how much room does one need. It's a small inn, of course it won't have the expansive space that generally is found in every hotel. I loved this place; I will return.

No gaudy lobby or hot tubs but a perfectly located, warm and charming hotel. Staff is delightful, as were other guests we met at breakfast.

This stay was so nice and friendly. You feel like beeing at home except for the fact that you probably don´t live in San Francisco. Quiet despite a very central location. A courtesy computer for mailing, check-in and more. We highly recommend this hotel but it seems already recognized by many people. Not a single bed was available if you hadn´t made an advance reservation.
