Coast Guard House Historic Inn and Cottages

  • Inn Details

Point Arena's best bed and breakfast inn and lodging establishment:In 1901, the U.S. Life-Saving Service built what is now the Coast Guard House Historic Inn. The facility was officially named the U.S. Coast Guard Life-Saving Station Number 314, at Arena Cove. Today, the two-story Cape Cod style Coast Guard House stands proudly restored as a steadfast symbol of the honorable service performed here for over 50 years. The furnishings and decor chosen for the inn reflect the classic lines and directness of purpose which characterized the American Arts and Crafts period. Designs of the era stressed a return to fine craftsmanship and promoted simple, uncluttered interiors in rebellion against the Victorian excesses popular at the same time. In the tradition of these turn-of-the-century craftsmen, we have decorated the Coast Guard House with comfortable furnishings, quality linens, the work of local artists and craftspeople, as well as mementos of the inns maritime history. Our mission is to provide personalized attention in a rejuvenating environment. We strive to offer you a peaceful night after an active day and in the morning present you with a tempting, full course breakfast. From dinner reservations to arranging a delightful massage, we can help you put together the perfect Life-Saving getaway on the beautiful Mendocino Coast. We look forward to hosting you in our special hideaway. Come see why we chose this place as our permanent escape to paradise.

My wife and I got away for a little "down" time on the NoCal Mendicino Coast - we picked The Coast Guard House Inn as a lovely getaway on Route 1 tucked overlooking Point Arena Cove. The rooms are charmingly decorated in the style perfect to the history of the house - no frilly victorian prints here - and the beds are exceptionally comfortable. We've stayed in most of the rooms there and love the fact that you can lie in bed and hear only the harbor sounds. Its amazingly quiet at night. Equally amazing is the amount of stars you see in the night sky. We're used to "big" sky in the Sierras and were surprised to find the same here on the coast. We liked sitting at the window, enjoying a glass of wine and listening/watching the evening sky. Breakfast is always scrumptious - Mia is an excellent cook - and the meals never dissappoint. Nor did I ever leave the table hungry as there is plenty what with the fruit, muffins, granola/yogurt, and the main dish. Everything is made from scratch and the consistently high quality is impressive. The hosts Mia and Kevin make the place even more special: friendly, funny, smart, and accomodating, they are open with suggestions of where to go or info on area history. It is a real treat to engage in an after-breakfast conversation with them on a myriad of subjects. And we can't forget Winston the awesome dog who is always up for a scritch or a walk if you seem the obliging type. This place is a real find and we will be coming back soon!

Great hospitality and friendly staff. Room needed to be a bit more clean for our liking but otherwise very nice peaceful stay.

Just booked or 8th visit. This is a wonderful location with fantastic hosts, Kevin and Mia. Mia's breakfasts are worth the visit alone but Kevin's local insights are not to be missed. Rooms and cottages are just what you want for rest and comfort each with its own character.

    Same time again next year!

My first visit to the Coast Guard House was to celebrate my birthday. I had gone on line and the web site immediately caught my eye because it was just what I wanted: a B&B that looked really cozy and comfortable, was located away from foot and car traffic and, as an added bonus, had a historical past, a working Coast Guard Station. That weekend was the beginning of a tradition, the yearly trip to the coast for Art in the Redwoods and a weekend's stay with Mia and Kevin for my birthday. Mia's breakfast's are the best, they are yummy and healthy!!! Don't worry, they'll ask if you have any dietary restrictions. The decorative flowers from the garden add to the delightful presentation and every meal seems to last forever as we seem to linger and chat with the other guests long after the plates are empty and have been whisked back into the kitchen. Kevin makes sure we have reservations for dinner, even when we have made very last minute requests. He always has a fire ready in the free standing stove when we come in after dark, a warm invitation to sit and talk with good friends or a chance to read a good book. Although we have been there many times now, we are still exploring the Point Arena area. Every trip brings new adventures, walks along the many beaches, catching a movie at the beautifully restored movie theater in Point Arena, huffing and puffing up the stairs at the Point Arena Lighthouse, exploring the shops and the local hardware store in Gualala, visiting the wonderful botanical gardens in Fort Bragg and walking up and down the pier at Point Arena Cove to watch all the local fishermen as they lower/raise their boats, weigh and mark their fish before delivery to restaurants and markets and watching people dinghy to and from to their anchored boats in the cove, there is always something interesting to watch. AND don't forget there's always the sunset if the fog hasn't rolled in!!!
