Shannon's Cottage Garden Bungalow is cozy, comfortable, beautifully decorated, quiet, unique and in a perfect location for me. My grandchildren and their parents are just a few blocks away. As Innkeeper, Shannon is gracious, responsive, and trusting. Her gardens are outstanding too.

Cottage Garden Bungalow is a home away from home. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing B&B in the quiet suburban location of Menlo Park with close distance to Palo Alto, Cottage Garden Bungalow is your place. The cottage is peaceful and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and you can even wake-up to the sounds of birds and bees. Being a city girl this is a rare and peaceful experience. The cottage is immaculate - warmly decorated, clean, comfortable and has all the amenities that I need on my trips. Shannon Thoke is wonderfully warm, kind, friendly and exceeded all my expectations. Shannon's gracious hospitality was an absolute pleasure and refreshing to deal with. I will go back to Cottage Garden Bungalow in a heart beat and highly recommend to anyone who needs a B&B in the Menlo Park\ Palo Alto area. Thanks Shannon for making my stay at Cottage Garden Bungalow a relaxing and peaceful stay.

I've stayed at Cottage Garden Bungalow twice now, with another visit planned for later this year. Each time it was lovely and exceeded my expectations. It is clean, quiet and private with a beautiful garden. Perfect accommodations for a private getaway. Shannon was helpful and very courteous, making sure that anything I needed was taken care of, but not underfoot. Would highly recommend staying here!!

A garage is still a garage!

Before making my reservations, I read the description here and on the B&B's website about a cottage located behind the garage with all of the amenities of home. I was very disappointed. I expected a cottage in a cute private setting with breakfast provided in a traditional way. Actually, it is a bedroom and bathroom which is part of the garage. There is a small but okay bathroom, the bedroom is very small (has some hooks on the wall to hang up an outfit). The bedroom contains the bed, two nightstands and a small desk with the desk chair, with only enough room to walk between these items. The "breakfast" part of this B&B is food on a covered workbench in the garage section. Yes, there is a coffee maker, microwave and small fridge. But it is in the garage. There are work shelves with tools, work gloves and misc. garage items across from the "table" with coffee and food. The traditional atmosphere of a B&B is missing. The kitchen area is in a garage where cars are most likely stored when guests are not around. There is a dirty bistro table outside of the room but it was too cold to use it for breakfast or coffee while I was there. There is a small desk with a chair but the top is cluttered... no place to put the stuff from the desk, so I sat on the bed to have my breakfast. The innkeeper might as well have been not present. Food was placed on the garage table and that was it. No other contact - no questions about breakfast preferences as noted in other reviews, no talks, stories or info about things to do in the area. The bed and linens were clean and comfortable. The shower and toilet were clean. However, I had the impression the the place was routinely cleaned through the center only. There was a lot of dust on the Bboard trim in the bathroom and dust in corners. All in all it was a quiet safe place to stay but certainly not worth the money. I expect B&Bs to have a charm and character that sets them apart from hotels. Definitely missing here.

    Innkeeper Response
While I understand that one cannot please everyone all the time, I am disappointed in the number of inaccuracies in this review. On the rare occasion that a guest has been unhappy, they have come to me directly so I can improve their experience. Finally, I am sure there are more luxurious and opulent accommodations in the area, but they will cost you two to three times more. I am truly sorry you've had a less than stellar experience and wish I was given the chance to change your mind.

First off, Shannon is a hoot and a half with her tales of chasing after pumpkin-nabbibng squirrels. Okay, I'm a sucker for pumpkin-nabbing squirrels, and the believer therein. Shannon communicates easily and well how the ways of the bungalow: laundry, parking, dishes, and so forth. I stayed there twenty plus days, and Shannon always had my comfort/schedule first. High praise, indeed! The bungalow is separate from the house, and has it's own deck and garden area. The garden holds incredible floral and songbird and, did I mention squirrel? delights. The bungalow extends from the detached garage, and the kitchen is tucked into a cozy, clean, sunlight corner of the garage. I do feel that the term "garage" does not really apply in that the space feels more like a spare potting shed, and place to park the bicycle that you may use during your stay. A more secluded spot, yet located walking distance to so many delights, is rare. My "local" friends were very impressed with my find!
