The Grateful Bed

On a last minute visit with our son who is at the college, we were lucky enough to find The Grateful Bed on line. We arrived and were warmly greeted by Carol and Rick. Our room, Suite Dreams, was beautiful and we absolutely loved the huge bathroom and claw-foot tub. The breakfast was gourmet and the friendly conversation with Carol and Rick made it perfect! We will visit again...no doubt!!!

Carol and Rick are the best!!! They always make me feel very comfortable. The room I always stay in is thyme. The decor bath and bed make u feel like u stepped back in time. Best breakfast and coffee !!

A lovely restored Victorian with quirky but functional plumbing, well decorated with nice retro style. the neighborhood is quiet in this central location, and the breakfast was fabulous. We will definitely stay here again!

We had a wonderful weekend at the Grateful Bed in Chico, California. Comfortable bed, clan room and delicious breakfasts. We were converted from life long grapefruit haters to lovers after having Carol's broiled grapefruit. We will be going back. We highly recommend The Grateful Bed!

We had the opportunity to visit Chico the Monday before Thanksgiving and are so glad we chose The Grateful Bed as our place to stay for the night, It is a lovely home in a very nice neighborhood. We were warmly greeted by Carol and shown to The Bed of Roses room...beautiful! It was a windy, rainy night and the room was the perfect place to snuggle up in. Carol suggested the Red Tavern for dinner. Really good fine dining and nice atmosphere. Breakfast the next morning was yummy...a little to "bready" for me, but well prepared all the same. The service was great...my coffee cup was never empty! We shared our breakfast table with two sisters also staying at the inn and had a lovely conversation with them. After they left, we asked Rick and Carol to join us for a cup of coffee and we talked for about an hour. What wonderful hosts! I feel like I've made a new set of friends. I'd highly recommend The Grateful Bed to anyone looking for a great bed and breakfast experience!

Anniversary stay. Excellent dinner recommendations; excellent breakfast! The frittata was cooked perfectly, and the muffins had a nice sugary crunch exterior & warm fluffy interior! Our hosts were warm & friendly, and eager to make our stay memorable! I look forward to returning next year!

Did not know much about the area or this particular bed and breakfast before staying there. Was delighted to find very wonderful hosts and a charming old house filled with interesting period furnishings and decor that takes one back in time. The food is outstanding and the convenience of being able to go from one's room straight downstairs to enjoy a breakfast that would be found in any four star restaurant was fantastic. This allowed for my wife and I more time to venture around the area during the short time we stayed. Rick and Carol are very friendly and helpful, and gave great recommendations of things to see, do, and places to eat in the area. Would recommend to anyone traveling to Chico to stay, well worth it!

Carol and Rick are the warm and welcoming hosts of this delightful B&B. The house is immaculate and not too "kitchy"...very tasteful. Wish we lived closer so we could visit more often. Highly recommend!

We stayed one night at The Grateful Bed and had a wonderful time. We had our bikes with us and it was easy to get around town. The house is clean and the hosts are very nice. Breakfast was amazing!

Rick and Carol gracefully accommodated my meeting schedule, remembered to ask about food allergies and went WAY out of their way to return my pillow when I forgot it. Plus the room and porches were lovely, the clawfoot tub was wonderful and the food was excellent. I definitely plan to go back as soon as I can. Looking for a special way to spend our 30th anniversary.... But had to be in Chico area... Had an excellent stay. Carol and Rick have created an oasis of charm and calm. They are engaging conversationalists (Rick has dry, playful sense of humor). Great tip on dining at The Red Tavern.... Fun stroll through the neighborhood on foot to get ghere. Breakfast at The Grateful Bed was world-class. Highly recommended.

Setting up the reservation was easy. I had to call and ask a couple of questions and the were so nice and helpful. After my Sister arrived she let me come in the Greatful Bed and check out their room. Their room and the Bed and Breakfast was so beautiful.

Carol, Rick, and their two dogs Darla and Daisy were perfect hosts! It felt like we had gone visiting some long lost friends. The only reason for my 3 stars for the Room is because the bed creaked whenever I shifted my position, even slightly. With two of us (my wife and I) the creaking was even more pronounced! Though I was a little disturbed with this one thing, the rest of the stay and the exceptional service more than made up for this glitch. Anyone would tend to overlook some of these things when surrounded by such kind and genuinely sweet hosts. We will definitely stay there again whenever we visit Chico. Venky

We stayed at this bed and breakfast because everything else was sold out in town. I came across this place on line and saw the prices were not much more than what the 3 star hotels were going for. We were happy to see that there was still openings for the day we needed so we booked the room. We are very glad we did. From now on when we come to visit my daughters at Chico State, we will always stay here. The room was great, the breakfast was amazing and the staff were wonderful. The room is a little noisy if you are a light sleeper. The trains blow their horns all night long and these are only single pane windows since they are original. I recommend those small ear plugs to help you sleep through the night. We were the only ones who had this problem, the other guests we spoke to had no problems. Great, er, Grate place to stay. I would definitely recommend to come here.

Rick & Carol are pros and staying in their home is always a welcome experience.

Absolutely lovely! Gracious and accommodating hosts, a well appointed room with an incredibly comfortable bed, a great bath..... and CLEAN..... a delicious breakfast! All of this equals a wonderful visit.... my only regret is that I wish I had been able to stay longer!

We visited Chico to see how the town and University had evolved since our college days, more than forty years ago. Since this was nostalgic pleasure trip, I booked our stay for two days starting the night before Valentines' Day. Rick and Carol [the owners] had added Valentines Day decorations and candies - nice touches, and the Valentines day breakfast was amazing - heart shaped waffles! The entire house was clean, tidy and well appointed. Grateful Bed is easily the best B&B we have ever visited. Highly recommended.

Everything exceeded my expectations. As a business traveler it was a welcome respite from the corporate hotel scene. Rick and Carol are excellent hosts and the breakfast was amazing. I will come again and look forward to it!

I was in Chico with my 18 yr old son who was checking out Chico State and spending the weekend with one of the sports teams there. My solo stay at the Grateful Bed was very relaxing. I felt right at home. Rick and Carol are wonderful hosts, provide a delicious breakfast and are a wealth of knowledge about the area. I will definitely stay here again if my son chooses to go to Chico State.

We stayed here for one night on our anniversary and it turned out to be a perfect choice. The location is very central to everything in Chico, the room was awesome, the hosts are extremely helpful, and friendly, and the breakfast was delicious. You will not regret staying here!

I love The Grateful Bed! This is the sweetest B&B I've ever stayed in. Built in 1905, every inch of the house has been lovingly and carefully renovated. It is a happy-feeling house...you'll understand what I mean when you stay there. I was in the Creak Room. My room was super clean, nicely decorated, quiet, with a ginormous impeccable bathroom and super comfortable bed with ironed sheets that were soft and smelled of sunshine. The inn keepers go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and feel welcomed, providing light refreshment, wine, soda etc. upon check in, and a super fancy candle-lit breakfast in the morning. White chocolate scone, anyone? Delicious sausage? Fancy egg dish I can't remember the name of? :) YUM! Chico is a charming town, and with the autumn leaves turning golden, and the hummingbirds at the pink flowers just outside the windows, The Grateful Bed was a lovely place to spend some time. I just wish I could have stayed longer!!!!

After a long, hot day on the motorcycle, the Grateful Bed was a wonderful oasis. We were early but were warmly welcomed. So many historic B&Bs are fussy and over decorated, not GB! It is pitch perfect. Carol and Rick were quintessential B&B hosts. This was the BEST B&B of our 12 day vacation!

The room was comfortable and breakfast was fantastic, but it was the warm and engaging personalities of Rick and Carol that made our brief stay memorable. It's worth going to Chico just to stay here.

I can't say enough good things about the Grateful Dead bed and breakfast. This is the only place we want to stay when we come to Chico. It feels like we are coming home. Great rooms, great food, great people. Thank you Rick and Carol for making us feel so welcome.

I can't say enough about how great our stay was here. Everything was above and beyond all of my expectations. The food, room and setting were all perfect.

Stayed in "Suite Dreams" a charming spacious room with attention to every detail. Gracious hosts made sure we had every thing we needed, even greeted us with a glass of wine. The huge bathroom had a clawfoot tub, a glassed in shower and two double sinks with all the amenities right down to the "rubber duckie." The gourmet breakfast was incredible!!! I can't wait for the opportunity to go back.

The inkeepers were delightful people. The food was delicious. The bed was very comfortable. The wonderful attention to detail shown in the furnishings and decorations was gratifing to behold. We would go out of our way to stay at this property again.

My wife and I are from Houston but were in Chico for a wedding. The rest of the family stayed in a Hotel but for $15 more a night, we found this gem! The room was cute & cozy, the bathroom was straight from 1909, and breakfast was immaculate. Needless to say, I wish this couple opened up another B&B near us!!!

Super clean, peaceful setting, lovely decor, comfy bed, nice conversation over breakfast. Great coffee! Most importantly, we requested and received a beautiful and tasty vegan breakfast.

We were in town for a rather sad family occasion, and our stay at the Grateful Bed was a big factor in making the trip a pleasant one. The room was very comfortable, the house is in a quiet neighborhood with wonderful gardens. The hospitality was top-notch. Amazing breakfast too, and it was easy to settle into friendly conversation with other guests and our hosts as we enjoyed the morning coffee and a delicious meal. A much better value than any of the chain hotels we considered, and we had a far more comfortable and personal experience at the Grateful Bed than we could have found anywhere else in town.

Found this place by accident and so glad I did. The people were wonderful, the accommodations comfortable and clean, and the breakfast was fantastic. I will be back!

Walked into town; enjoyed the atmosphere. Great breakfast the next morning & were back on the road by 10:00 am. Definitely recommend staying here - even for longer; we never got to tour the Bidwell Mansion.

We really loved our stay! In addition to all the normal stuff being wonderful, we were cheerfully helped with space to put my bike together, fun stories about the town and special meal requests. The value was outstanding. We stayed in their best, most expensive room, which was wonderfully cozy and picturesque, but it still ended up being cheaper than the national chain we had to stay in on our final night of travel. In fact, that was the worst part about our stay. After being the the Grateful Bed, the 4-star national chain hotel seamed inferior in every way. It was like having a gourmet meal and then going back to fast food.

This was our first time to stay in a bed and breakfast and can I say, when traveling without kids, I don't think I will ever go back to a hotel again! Carol and Rick were amazingly welcoming and incredibly enjoyable to visit with. The food was outstanding; I still dream of it! We are planning on moving to the area this summer and have decided that when guests come to visit, they have to stay their first night at the Grateful Bed, then they can come stay at our house...that is if they still want to!

I feel that 'The Greatful Bed' is a Bed & Breakfast that all others should espire to and be measured against. It is so clean that you'd be hard-pressed to find a spec of dust. The breakfast is gourmet. The inn keepers, Rick and Carol, can not be more accommodating. I most highly recommend this place.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at The Grateful Bed while in Chico for a wedding. From the moment we arrived we were enchanted by this lovely B & B; from the quiet neighborhood setting, beautifully landscaped yards to the lovingly restored Victorian farmhouse furnished with period antiques and clever touches of whimsy. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by our hosts, Rick & Carol Turner, and immediately felt at home. Our room, Suite Dreams, was even more beautiful than we anticipated, the linens were luxurious and the bed was so comfortable. The bathroom was way beyond our expectations, so spacious and beautiful with a wonderful claw foot tub, his and hers pedestal sinks, and step-in shower. We loved the complimentary custom soaps, shampoo, lotions, etc. As we settled in, we noticed how much close attention to detail that our hosts had paid to making their guests stay very comfortable. The breakfasts each morning were a feast for the eyes and incredibly delicious! When you make your reservations, be sure to request the Dutch Baby for breakfast! We enjoyed talking with Rick & Carol after breakfast each morning. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer! We look forward to our next stay at The Grateful Bed. We keep coming back for those amazing breakfasts.. Carol is a gourmet cook! This past visit, we enjoyed the backyard peace and quiet after a busy day with our son who is at Chico State. Everytime we visit, we feel like we are coming home!

The crispness, cleanliness and comfortable elegence was exceptional. The hosts were warm and charming. The grounds were fabulous. The privacy of the room (Thyme) might have been a problem if I came for a "romantic" stay. The only place to stay in Chico!

Rick and Carol have a charming home and are gracious hosts. We were just there for a weekend but would have enjoyed staying there longer. The highlight of our stay were the breakfasts - simply wonderful. Would highly recommend staying here and hope to visit again.

A real pot of tea. Made with boiling water. A rarity at the finest hotels, but matter of course here. A wonderful breakfast, a quiet place to stay and a great cup of tea!

The Inn Keepers were very friendly and enjoyable to talk to. The room was amazing I recommend getting a room with a claw foot tub it was so relaxing to sit in there and let all your worries slip away.

The Grateful Bed is a most wonderful place to stay. The proprietors, Rick and Carol Turner are kind, friendly, and thoughtful. The price in my estimate is fair, not excessive, espeically for the quality of the overall experience. The B & B is easy to locate in Chico and not far from various activities at Chico State or around the town. My wife and I have been back several times and plan on more stays at this B & B.

Second time we have stayed for our Son's Chico matches and we will be back. Rick and Carol are wonderful innkeepers and their attention to detail and service make this place special. All the antiques and whimsical touches and the over the top breakfasts have us already thinking about our next stay.

My husband and I recently spent 5 relaxing, pampered days at an amazing B&B. We'd been undergoing some extensive renovations in our home and had been living in a "construction zone" for months. Our son who lives in Chico invited us for a visit and suggested that we might enjoy "The Grateful Bed." We were so glad that he did. Our hosts were gracious and congenial and we really enjoyed the company of other like-minded guests whom we met at breakfast, several of whom were repeat visitors. The breakfasts, which included fresh baked goods and fruits and vegetables from the owners' garden, were invitingly presented in a charming dining room. Our room was quiet and comfortable and our bathroom spacious and spotless. I can highly recommend this extablishment and look forward to being counted among the names of frequent guests.

We have stayed at The Grateful Bed approximately 6 times. Staying there is just a wonderful part of being in Chico and visiting our daughter at Chico State. Rick and Carol are gracious, caring and attentive. We love meeting other guests, hanging out on the back porch and playing Uno, and look forward to the best gourmet breakfast possible. We feel so comfortable and perfectly at home and will be returning as long as our daughter is at the university.

The Grateful Bed was a fabulous surprise. Although their website is well done, I didn't expect to find such a gem in Chico, a college town. Located in a lovely tree lined neighborhood with well kept grounds, we were warmly welcomed by our Innkeepers, Rick and Carol, who treated us as if we were part of their family. Breakfast the next morning was delicious. It was prepared with ingredients that befit the Fall season, and special attention was paid to the food allergies we had communicated in our reservation request. I wish I could have stayed the whole weekend. I would certainly stay at The Grateful Bed again.

This was my first experience with Grateful Bed but I must say I've never felt so welcomed and part of a family as I did here. The proprietors are wonderful folks who treated us like family. The room was nice (though a tad small, but perfectly functional). The Inn is situated in a quiet, historic neighborhood within walking distance of downtown Chico. Strongly recommended.

It hasn't mattered which season we booked at the Grateful Bed or with which family members, we were always comfortable...summer or winter, fall or spring. Rick and Carol enjoy keeping their standards high and it is definitely worth repeat visits. Do you like small surprises in decor? You will be seeing different decor at different months of the year there. The Grateful Bed has really comfy beds and furnishings to rival Bidwell Mansion.

We visited Chico in November of 2009 to have a small marriage ceremony and a mini honeymoon. Chico's Bidwell Park was a perfect location for the ceremony, and the Grateful Bed was an outstanding B&B! From the well adorned rooms, to the incredibly thoughtful breakfasts (each of our 4 meals featured heart shaped foods), we were delighted with every aspect of our stay. A million thanks to our wonderful hosts! We highly recommend the Grateful Bed to anyone looking for an exceptional B&B experience.

This was a wonderful stay of two nights with experienced innkeepers who know what they are doing. The breakfast was awesome and the accomodations totally up to par. We paid just $125 for one of the smaller rooms but the private bath was spacious. Inkeepers Carol and Rick know how to judge whatever level of interaction you want with your hosts. We happen to like plenty of it and they were wonderfully friendly. The neighborhood is relatively quiet and we slept great.

Beyond all our expectations! Relaxing, comfortable, friendly, and more! hosts are so delightful! Food is delicious, and the extra touches around the room just made our visit perfect!

This is a classic B&B experience. Run by an experienced couple, they don't miss any details. Clean and tidy, everything is as good as you'd hope here. It made our visit to Chico all the more enjoyable.
