Who could possibly resist the mellow summer afternoons or the crystal clear winter skies over Mt. Lassen? The area offers a diverse selection of recreational activities. Near the Inn are opportunities for hiking, golfing, boating, water-skiing and bike riding. You will also view multitudes of wildlife and engage in possibly the best fly-fishing in California. During the winter the Inn offers immediate access to cross-country skiing, with downhill skiing and snowmobiling nearby. December is a favorite time for Christmas tree cutting. In a "yet to be discovered" area, the Bidwell House is located on the southeastern slope of Mt. Lassen. Chester and its surrounding area are rich in the history of gold-mining, ranching and logging. The Inn provides a great resting spot between the great valley of California and points east. The Inn is perfect for hideaway seekers, honeymooners, business travelers, weddings, reunions and corporate retreats.

We love coming up for a nice, quiet get-away. The rooms are so cozy, love the fresh cookie while checking in and the breakfast is always delicious!

It was nice to stay during the week and enjoy the quiet and a nice easy swing in the front yard. The breakfast was wonderful as was the service.

Booked 2 rooms at this charming B&B. Owners were very welcoming and communal areas a real plus. Home cooked 3 course breakfast a treat.

The accommodations are wonderful. I arrived early and because no one was at the front desk, I called the number poste. A gentleman answered the phone and said "you are awfully early" I explained yes I was and if the room was not ready it was not a problem I could come back but I thought I would check as I had just driven into town.. He arrived a few short minutes later and said the room was ready and showed me to the room. The accommodation are clean and well kept. It was the breakfast I was so disappointed. The first morning I was served first course a yogurt dish with granola on top. The second course consisted of scrambled eggs with a dollop of store bought pesto sauce on top with grated cheese, two strips of bacon that I think were the "precooked" bacon, I'm not sure. a store bought muffin like McDonalds serves with store bought Jam and Jelly. Orange juice was not fresh squeezed as I've always had in B&B and not even orange juice, but came out of a plastic gallon container labeled "orange delight" i.e.; kool aid. Dessert consisted of chopped grapes, apple and strawberries. Very disappointing in fact something I would expect at a Best Western where the breakfast is included and even they serve orange juice, not fresh squeezed but at least orange juice. I never saw any staff members other than the waitress and the gentleman that showed me my room. Again in other B&B's the hosts have always appeared at Breakfast and welcomed the guests, chatted, "where are you from" "thank you" etc. Maybe they were embarrassed? I did not stay for breakfast the following morning, but instead chose to leave and go elsewhere. If you are looking for charming accommodations this is the place but if you are expecting normal B&B breakfast waking to the smell of fresh breads, muffins and/or biscuits with homemade jams, eggs, etc.and friendly hosts, or any hosts at all, this is not the place. .

Bidwell House is run by a lovely couple with their 2 boys. We have been staying with them since they purchased the inn 9 years ago and have enjoyed our winter stays every year since then. Chester is a pretty sleepy town in the winter and for the last few years snow has been hard to come by yet there are plenty of adventures to keep you busy. Breakfasts are always a treat as Eva is a wonderful cook. Don't miss the Red Onion for dinner as Filip is a wonderful chef.

My husband and I stayed for 4 days. We stayed one night in the Rose room and the other three in the robins roost. Both were very nice. Eva is a very gracious Inn keeper. We will be back.

Filip and Eva and their staff are always friendly and helpful! They make us feel very welcome, and quickly attend to any need. We have never been disappointed with accommodations or the excellent food. And the setting is fantastic...beautiful with or without snow!
