Power's Mansion was built from a gold-mining fortune in 1884 by Harold T. Power. Herbert Hoover, then a young mining engineer who would become our President, was a frequent house-guest of Mr. Power. The Mansion has fifteeen gracious guestrooms with private baths and separate entrances. The Honeymoon Suite has a heart-shaped jacuzzi tub for two and a fireplace at the foot of the brass bed. The Mansion also features an adjacent Ballroom that can be used to host weddings and special events. Also available to our guests is a beautiful Irish Pub restaurant and full bar. The Mansion is just a short stroll out of the driveway to the heart of downtown Auburn, with it's old-fashioned drugstore soda fountain, restaurants and several unique shops. Area lakes and rivers have facilities for gold-panning, fishing and every water sport. Hiking, horseback riding, golf and snow skiing are also nearby. Guests will enjoy the comfort and elegance of a Victorian home and the hospitality of Gold-Country.

We stayed in the Spring Room. The comforter, sitting chair, and pillow case were stained, and the bed was very uncomfortable...quite hard. The mattress tags said they were from CORT Furniture Rental, which may explain why it was so uncomfortable. The room was air conditioned, but there was no way for us to control the temperature, and it became pretty warm inside. A fan would've helped. We would've opened the window, but the noise from the bar located very nearby outside would've been too loud. As it was, we could hear the music, people, and lots of empty bottles being placed in an outdoor receptacle on a regular basis. On top of that, we heard the trains sound their horns every 2-3 hours as they passed by. It was near impossible to get any sleep from all the noise and being uncomfortably warm. If we would've known our room would've been so close to the bar and that the trains would be sounding their horns throughout the night, we wouldn't have chosen to stay at this inn. The "spa amenities you'd usually find from a better hotel" soaps were not spa quality at all. Softsoap handsoap and White Rain conditioner, shampoo, and body wash can all be found at our local Dollar Store. Not that this is a huge deal-breaker, but again, it just seems like things are being misrepresented. The breakfast was another disappointment. After reading that we'd be treated to a lavish gourmet breakfast, we were looking forward to enjoying that meal. Instead, it was diner fare: sausage, bacon, biscuit and gravy, hash browns, and quiche. If you do an internet search for "lavish gourmet breakfast", you will find a huge discrepancy between what was served and what others serve. It is also served in the bar area, with the three or four tv's on in the background, as well as the radio playing top 100 music. An interesting atmosphere for breakfast. If you have a Groupon, get a refund.

On the occasion of my son's wedding we contacted Power's Mansion. We had Groupons which made a very good deal. We secured all of the rooms of the Mansion for family and guests. Before we ever registered we had spoken with the staff about changes, room assignments, cancellations and additions. All of which they accomodated us at every turn. The staff always asking if they could help in any way and were willing to do anything to make our stay more enjoyable. The owner, Alfred Lee, a magical man of many talents, provided more for us that any establishment I have ever stayed in and we are world travelers. He extended himself and his staff far beyond any expectations with the affection of a family member. To be treated like royality usually only comes with a cruise but here we found gold in Auburn. I highly recomend the Power's Mansion and Alfred Lee for your next event or stay.

    Not as advertised.

When we arrived the first thing you notice is that the outdoor grass is a green artificial carpet. The two rooms we were given to chose from had stains on the bedspreads and the TV's had the old-fashion dual dials for VHF and UHF reception even though they had a satellite dish, the clerk could not get the TV to work. Beware of the cancellation policy for we did not stay and were charged for three days even though we were just going to stay for two. We should add that the review above should have not applicable for we can't assess the dining other than it's in another location and service.

Ok, but I've stayed in better.

Power's Mansion provided a decent room, although I did expect to find the standard toiletries in the bathroom. The main reason I made the reservation I did was that they advertised internet access but we were unable to access the internet. The owners also own a nearby pub and that seems to be the focus of their attention. They also have an agreement with a nearby diner for breakfast which worked out really nicely since we didn't have to be on a schedule. We only stayed one night and in all the stay was fine, but I didn't find much reason to stay there rather than the Holiday Inn down the street.
